‘Rachael Ray’ bids farewell to daytime TV

After 17 seasons of weekday food and fun, the kitchen is closing for “Rachael Ray.”

That’s the program that goes by that name, not the title personality, who is already looking toward new media horizons for herself.

The last episode of her syndicated talk show airs Wednesday, May 24 (check local listings for times), and it’s sure to celebrate many of the top moments Ray has put forth over the better part of the past two decades — both as a culinary and lifestyle authority and as someone whose interviewing skills have developed considerably during the run of the program (which won the Daytime Emmy for outstanding talk show three times, twice in the “entertainment” category and once in “informative”).

“I’m a good cook who learned how to talk to anybody over time,” the ever-lively Ray says in assessing the longevity of her eponymous show, “and that’s because of practice. I have always believed that anybody in America can be successful at anything if they can close their eyes and see themselves trying it. If you’re not ashamed of where you come from, you never have to be ashamed of where you might go.”

When “Rachael Ray” began in 2006, its bubbly host already was widely known for the cooking shows she made principally for Food Network, including “30 Minute Meals,” a concept the former waitress and pub manager originated while she was a buyer for an upscale food market in Upstate New York. She parlayed that job into classes she taught to customers, which drew the interest of an area television station; the segments she did there paved the way for NBC’s “Today” to feature her regularly, then for Food Network to begin showcasing her.

Recurring spots on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” progressed to the point where Winfrey became an executive producer of Ray’s own talk show from its inception. However, recent Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame inductee Ray maintains she’s never been overly concerned with how she fares as an interviewer of other celebrities, despite how many of them have passed through “Rachael Ray.”

“I just don’t think that translates to people who do what I do, service people,” she reflects. “You never think about how you did; you think about the customer. I think Howard Stern is the greatest interviewer on the planet. He grew into it because he was

grateful for the job he had, and I think of it that way. If you do anything long enough, you’re going to be better at it than when you started.”

Throughout the run of “Rachael Ray,” the host (a major advocate for the people of Ukraine, as seen on the show) has had a true partner — if not always on camera — in her husband, musician and lawyer John Cusimano. Besides contributing melodically to the program, he effectively became Ray’s co-host when the coronavirus pandemic forced her to halt the usual method of production on her show, normally taped in a Manhattan studio. The couple headed upstate to their home in Lake Luzerne, New York, and did a bare-necessities version of the program from there. (A fire ravaged the house in the summer of 2020, but they rebuilt it in a little over a year.)

“I crossed a line for the first time,” Ray muses. “I never thought I’d be able to say I loved working from my home, because a few years ago, that was the thing I was most afraid of … that anybody would cross the barrier of coming into my home. No magazines, no TV shows. I was so strict about it because it was my safe place, just for me and my family. Then with the pandemic, I had no choice. And then after my house burned down, I really had no choice! We had to live in one bedroom with one bathroom, and we had to tape from our guest house for two years. It was a weird time.”

As for what lies ahead for Ray, she intends to work again with many of her “Rachael Ray” colleagues in channeling much of her focus and energy into her new venture, Free Food Studios. It has a commitment for an A&E series — for that network’s Home.Made.Nation initiative — tentatively titled “Rachael Ray Meals in Minutes,” the first effort in a new library of programming she intends to build with fellow producers she has worked with before. She also plans to nurture new talent in the food-show space.

“There’s tons of great content out there, now more than ever,” Ray reasons. “We’re going to be working on platforms on multiple levels. The world is constantly changing in that way, and I feel so lucky as an American woman in her 50s to still be relevant. It’s exciting and cool, and it proves the point that you can do anything you want. I feel that I’ve been given so many great opportunities.”

Verstappen is in it to win it

At just 25 years old, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has already made his mark in the racing world, taking home the F1 World Drivers’ Championship two years in a row, in 2021 and 2022. Verstappen shows no sign of slowing down in 2023 as the racing season starts to ramp up.

The son of two racing drivers, many would agree that Verstappen has a “need for speed” in his blood. He began competing at the junior level in 2006 and, by 2014, had risen to the professional level, becoming the youngest driver in history to complete in an F1 racing weekend. By the end of the season the next year, Verstappen had taken the title of F1A Rookie of the Year, cementing his place in the racing world.

In 2016, Verstappen signed with Red Bull Racing, the team he currently drives for. Since signing, Verstappen has clinched several awards and championships and then dominated the 2022 racing season. Verstappen has taken that energy into the 2023 season, as he’s currently ranked the top driver in Formula 1 racing just a few rounds in. Racing fans and experts noticed that throughout 2022, Verstappen’s style and skill were bumped to the next level compared to previous seasons. Some noted that winning the championship title in 2021 gave Verstappen a boost of confidence that worked its way into his driving. He found a way to be both energetic and relaxed, helping him win 15 races out of 22 and take home his second consecutive drivers’ championship.

Even though the 2023 season just started in March, Verstappen has already won two of the first four, taking the top spot in the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Australia Grand Prix and second in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan. Currently, Verstappen has 93 points (six more than teammate Sergio Perez) heading into the coming races. Red Bull Racing has 180 points, leading the Constructor Championship standings ahead of teams Aston Martin (87) and Mercedes (76). Verstappen is slated to race in the Italian Grand Prix, with ESPN2 providing live coverage on Sunday, May 21; and in the Monaco Grand Prix, which will air live on ABC Sunday, May 28.

Verstappen is a fan favorite worldwide — especially with his Dutch countrymen in the Netherlands. He was voted the most popular F1 driver in 2021 and consistently fills dedicated sections of Grand Prix grandstands with excited fans. If the 2023 season is to be anything like Verstappen’s last couple of seasons, fans will surely be in for a heart-racing schedule of races with Max Verstappen leading the way.

Q: Will “Blue Bloods” be back next season?

— George Ryan, Grand Junction, Colo.

A: The answer to that is finally “Yes,” though it was held up for a while. One of CBS’ most reliably performing shows will get a 14th season, but the cast and crew (including Tom Selleck, who had to have gotten a sizable salary during his “Magnum, p.I.” years) had to agree to budget cuts to make that happen … reportedly encompassing a 25-percent reduction for the law-and-order-family drama’s top-billed stars. Along with such other programs as producer Dick Wolf’s NBC shows, which recently got renewals after making similar budgetary concessions, this is an indication of the current series-production model that is seeing networks seeking reduced budgets no matter how successful a series is. “Blue Bloods” surely is one of television’s top success stories now, also given how many other outlets run repeats of it (ION Television, Pluto, etc.), but this situation demonstrates that no show is immune in the industry’s current economy.

Q: Since it’s starting so late in the TV year, will “Nancy Drew” still get a full season for its last round? — Kayla Scott, via e-mail

A: It will, for what was ordered originally. The CW gave the show’s makers sufficient notice of the cancellation to be able to let them have time to complete the commissioned episodes, and also to craft a definitive finale that title star Kennedy McMann was particularly pleased about, as she told us recently. The series’ fourth and last season begins May 31, and it will run until late August.

MeTV offers a ‘M*A*S*H’ salute to Harry Morgan

Veteran character actor Harry Morgan was very much a part of the heart and soul of “M*A*S*H” during the years he was on the Korean War-set sitcom, and many of his episodes are presented as his character — Col. Sherman Potter — is showcased as MeTV’s month-long “M*A*S*H Maydays” festival continues Monday, May 22, through Friday, May 26. Though he had to seem as if he disapproved of the antics of such medics within his Korean War oversight as Hawkeye Pierce and B.J. Hunnicutt (Alan Alda, Mike Farrell), Potter often was chuckling because of them when he couldn’t be seen doing so. However, one of his best stories here (shown on Thursday) is the bittersweet “Old Soldiers,” in which he returns from a trip that he keeps confidential ... until he reveals the deeply touching reason for it.

Ramsay returns: Gordon entices entrepreneurs in ‘Food Stars’

He’s been around for decades, but fans have yet to tire of the brutal honesty, invaluable tips and delicious recipes that superstar chef Gordon Ramsay serves. With shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” and “Gordon Ramsay Uncharted,” the Scottish chef has traveled to share his experience worldwide. Now, Ramsay is on the hunt for the next big name in food. “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars” premieres Wednesday, May 24, on Fox, following the Season 13 premiere of “MasterChef.” In this new series, Gordon makes his way out of the kitchen and into the boardroom, trading in his cast iron skillet and cutting board for revenue reports and marketing meetings, this time putting his own wallet on the line. An American adaptation of the British TV series, “Gordon Ramsay’s Future Food Stars,” the show follows Ramsay as he looks to find the next culinary entrepreneur he’d like to (personally) financially support, offering the most impressive contestant $250,000 to follow their dreams.

Ramsay tests these hopeful entrepreneurs in every facet of running a successful business, challenging contestants at every phase of production, from initial marketing to product development.

“The aspiring moguls will be challenged in all aspects of running a food enterprise, including

creating, marketing and selling to real customers. ... As Ramsay pushes contestants to their limits, they’ll have to prove they possess the raw ingredients required to succeed – drive, dedication, creativity, passion and talent,” Fox said of the series in a news release.

Ramsay explained further in an interview with Variety: “I’ve hand-picked some of the most promising culinary innovators to compete for not only my investment but my partnership in business. They will have to hustle through tough challenges, break through and set themselves apart from the other competition, and make noise to prove they have what it takes to be successful.”

Joining this season’s inaugural competition are: Aaron Valentine, founder of Snow Cone King; Caroline D’Amore, CEO of Pizza Girl Inc.; Elisa Strauss, owner of Confetti Cakes; Jake Aronskind, founder of the cooking app Pepper; Kagen Cox, owner of Kagen Coffee & Crepes; Lan Ho, owner of Fat Miilk; Queen Precious-Jewel Zabriskie, spice purveyor of Indulgent Essential Spices; Sydney Webb, co-founder of Toto Foods, Inc., and more.

“The Running Man” (1987): much-viewed game that involves Schwarzenegger’s character and others had a deadly undercurrent in this adaptation of a Stephen King story.

“Total Recall” (1990):

Schwarzenegger’s best movies, director Paul Verhoeven’s intriguing sci-fi fantasy features the star as a man who carries another person’s memories on Mars. And that’s just one slice of the plot that also includes Sharon Stone and probably the most unusual cabbie you’ve ever seen.

“Conan the Barbarian” (1982): The sheer physique that Schwarzenegger displayed was more than enough to make him perfectly suitable for the title role of this famously violent adventure.

“The Terminator” (1984): “He’ll be back,” indeed … and Schwarzenegger was, in several sequels to this James Cameron-directed action classic that was conflated by some with another “role” the star had later to get him dubbed “The Governator.”

“True Lies” (1994): a television series almost 30 years later, director James Cameron’s original version remains great fun thanks to Schwarzenegger as a very secret secret agent and Jamie Lee Curtis as his wife, who learns his true profession in a complicated way.

“The 6th Day” (2000): clone of himself has replaced him at home, a man (Schwarzenegger) sets out to make things right before he can be eliminated.
