The last last show: Corden, ‘Late Late Show’ exit after years on CBS

Almost one year ago to the day, comedian James Corden announced his decision to leave “The Late Late Show,” which he began hosting when Craig Ferguson (“The Hustler”) stepped away from the desk in 2015. Neither the host nor the show has plans to go quietly, however, and CBS is marking the end of an era with the prime-time special “The Last Last Late Late Show,” airing Thursday, April 27, ahead of the show’s final broadcast later that night.

For 18 of its 28 years on the air, the late-night show — which debuted in January 1995 and featured more “talk” than “show” under original host Tom Snyder — has featured a unique comic style for many North American viewers: dry, sardonic British humor.

Ferguson — a Scottish treasure and successor to the show’s second host, Craig Kilborn (“The Kilborn File”) — occupied the desk with snake mug in hand for nearly a decade before passing the torch to Corden, who is originally from the greater London area in England. Corden, who will always be remembered for his “Carpool Karaoke” segments, nearly surpassed Ferguson’s hosting tenure before deciding to return home to the U.K. this year; what’s more, it appears “The Late Late Show” will exit stage right alongside its current host.

and producers have helped Corden to make it an affair to remember. Titling it “The Last Last Late Late Show,” the prime-time special will welcome a friend of the show, Tom Cruise (“Top Gun: Maverick,” 2022), for “an epic musical performance during ‘The Lion King’” at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre. (The pair are reportedly set to star as Timon and Pumbaa on stage.) Also anticipating sizeable crowds that evening, the show’s staff has expanded their possible audience size to fit the bill. With this in mind, it’s possible the “Last Last” edition will look a bit more like the Oscars than a traditional episode of “The Late Late Show.”

That said, the venue, the audience and the star power may not be the only big things during the night of April 27, as Corden is fully prepared for some big waterworks to come his way. “There will be so many tears,” Corden said in an interview reported by the Los Angeles Times. “This has been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, it really has. I’ve never taken this job for granted. Ever. Not once.”

CBS’s decision not to replace Corden came as a shock to many fans (and no doubt staff) who have borne witness to many talk show host replacements since the dawn of the genre some 74 years ago. (For those wondering, the first latenight talk show has its origins on CBS in October 1949 with “The Faye Emerson Show.”)

Conforto seeks to recapture All-Star form with Giants

In the category of most intriguing offseason free agent signings, we present for your consideration Michael Conforto.

Indeed, the slugging outfielder with the sweet lefty swing was supposed to be a perennial All Star by now. But injuries and inconsistent play short-circuited his career with the New York Mets, who opted to let the Washington State native test the market following a poor 2021 season.

So now, the nine-year veteran is starting over. He spent all of 2022 as an unsigned free agent, recovering and rehabbing from shoulder surgery, then over the winter signed a twoyear, $36 million contract with the San Francisco Giants with the idea that he would be their starting left fielder.

If he’s the player he was in his best years in New York, that will prove to be a bargain. He was an All Star in 2017, hit 34 homers in 2019 and was a middle-of-thelineup force as recently as the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when he batted .322 with nine homers, a .412 on-base percentage and an OPS of .927 in 54 games. But a nightmarish 2021 of .232, 14, .344, .729 and a subsequent shoulder injury followed and Conforto was left to salvage his flagging career elsewhere.

Early returns have it that his comeback is on track. In the first two-plus weeks of preseason play, Conforto reports his throwing shoulder feels normal and that he could be moved to his usual haunt of right field, a position that requires a stronger arm, if needed. His swing also appears to be rounding into shape with three homers in his first seven games. He’ll get a chance to show his old team they made a mistake when he and the Giants close out a four-game home series against the Mets Sunday, April 23, on ESPN.

When Adam Sandler helped enliven ‘Saturday

Q: I enjoyed seeing the “Saturday Night Live” clips of Adam Sandler on the Mark Twain Prize tribute to him. Which years was he on that show? – Ken Steele, via email

A: He was on the legendary NBC program from 1990 to 1995, first as a writer and then as a featured player. Characters such as Opera Man (which Idina Menzel channeled on that recent Mark Twain Prize special on CNN) and other contributions including “The Chanukah Song” made him an audience favorite. Sandler maintains that he was fired from the show, just as his movie work was starting to gain traction with “Billy Madison.” When he returned to “SNL” in 1999 as a guest host, he didn’t fail to rub it in about his alleged firing, noting how much his films had grossed (translation: a lot) in the time since he had left.

Q: I see that “Accused” has been picked up for a second season. Will the show go back to continue stories it did during the first season? –Sarah Jennings, Dublin, Ohio

A: It’s possible, but since the Fox drama is an anthology by nature, it’s more likely that the second round will play out like the first one – with each of the episodes presenting a self-contained story with its own cast and director. That’s not to say the show’s makers won’t try to get some of the talents back, particularly when it comes to directors who have included Marlee Matlin and Michael Chiklis, but it seems probable that they would be handed new stories rather than continuations of the ones they’ve already done.

“You’ll believe a man can fly.” So said the ads for the 1978 screen version of “Superman,” and the phrase proved reasonably true. Turner Classic Movies presents the hugely entertaining film Sunday, April 23 – as part of the channel’s tribute to Warner Bros. on the studio’s 100th anniversary – and it made an immediate star of Christopher Reeve, who landed the central part (and made three sequels) after such names as Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen had been bandied about for it.

This really is three stories in one: the infant Kal-El’s early life in another world with father Jor-El (Marlon Brando); the youngster’s upbringing in Smallville; and the grown Superman’s battle with villainous Lex Luther (an amusing Gene Hackman). Margot Kidder is reporter Lois Lane in director Richard Donner’s terrific cast ... and if you’re looking for more superheroism afterward, 1989’s “Batman” follows this.

A book, a new home and a milestone for ‘Delicious Miss Brown’

It’s been an eventful past few months for Kardea Brown.

This past fall, she moved into her dream home on the South Carolina coast, where she recently completed filming the the eighth season of her Food Network series “Delicious Miss Brown” (which included its milestone 100th episode). Also that October, she released her first book, “The Way Home: A Celebration of Sea Islands Food and Family With Over 100 Recipes,” which quickly made its way onto the New York Times bestseller list. Brown had been considering writing a book for the past four years but like with many things these days, the idea really got legs during the pandemic. After she was approached by an editor at Harper Collins to do a book in 2020, she found herself spending the next nearly two years developing and testing recipes, many of which were her interpretations of family recipes.

The final product is dedicated to the place where her love of food took hold, the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia, and those who taught her how to cook.

“I grew up in a family where my great-grandmother and my grandmother never wrote their recipes down,” Brown explains. “And so I realized this is my opportu-

nity to pay homage to my grandmother and my great-grandmother, and this is a place where some of their recipes and my interpretations of their recipes could live.

“And so that’s why I knew that once this opportunity came – and it did – that this cookbook would be based on that, and it would also give people a glimpse into who I am. You know, everyone knows ‘Delicious Miss Brown’ but I wanted people to see who Kardea Brown was as well.”

As for “Delicious Miss Brown,” now in its eighth season on Sunday afternoons, she’ll also be trying out a few ideas in her brand new kitchen.

“I’m kind of doing a lot of fusion food so I’m mixing some of my Lowcountry spin,” she explains. “I have an entire episode dedicated to Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine. We’re going to do an episode where I go horseback riding with a friend, and so we’re going to do like a (Kentucky) Derby theme. We are going to celebrate some of the holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. and so there’s going to be some brunch items on the menu.

“Of course, we’re going to have lots of seafood,” she continues. “But yeah, we’re just switching up a little bit.”

“Dog Day Afternoon” (1975)

Pacino and Lumet collaborated on another fact-based tale, the saga of a bank rob bery gone extremely awry ... with surpris es about the reason behind the attempted heist eventually emerging.
