‘Yellowjackets’ is back with more drama for Melanie Lynskey and company

Melanie Lynskey can’t detail them, but she says she’s as excited about the developments in Season 2 of “Yellowjackets” as she was about Season 1.

The actress had a big journey on the award circuit for the freshman round of the drama series, and its second year begins Friday, March 24, on Showtime’s streaming and on-demand channels (with the new episodes then starting on the linear Showtime on Sunday, March 26). Lynskey earned honors from multiple critics organizations plus a Gracie Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination for her firstyear portrayal of Shauna, one of the thenteen soccer players who sur vived a mid1990s plane crash. While they’re still tr ying to piece their respective lives back together, the sometimes-vicious turns of their shared past keep that a challenge.

“ The thing I love about my character is that she’s continually surprising,” the pleasant Lynskey notes. “Is she a terrible person? Is she a wonderful person? I think the truth is that she’s somewhere inbetween.”

As with the first season of “Yellowjackets,” two sets of actresses stay in sync while playing the same characters at different ages. Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress comprise the older quartet, with Sophie Nelisse, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty and Jasmin Savoy Brown as their younger counterparts respectively Lynskey reasons that for all of them, “ The stakes feel kind of high after the first season got so much acclaim. Ever y time I feel ner vous, though, I stop and think of how the writers must be feeling – tr ying to

create another stor y that’s as compelling as the first one, which they absolutely did.”

With Lauren Ambrose (“Six Feet Under”) and Simone Kessell added to the regular cast of “Yellowjackets” for Season 2, and Elijah Wood as a season-long guest star, Lynskey is expectedly pleased that her spouse Jason Ritter also makes a guest appearance. “I came back to work after ward,” she recalls, “and everybody was like, ‘Your husband is the nicest person!’ And it’s true. He’s just so easygoing and sweet to everyone.’ ”

Lynskey also earned considerable notice and acclaim for her recent guest turn on HBO’s “ The Last of Us.” The part was written with her in mind, and she mar vels that “ to get that opportunity without even having to audition, I was so fortunate”

“Yellowjackets” already has a Season 3 renewal, and Lynskey – who maintains,

“I’ve never had this kind of job security before” – is grateful that the show has come along in her career when it has. “It’s been interesting also becoming a parent in this time,” she reflects. “My daughter (with Ritter) is four, so the most exciting times in my personal and professional lives have coincided. It’s been pretty incredible.”

Here comes Judge – and the Yankees – in ‘23

Aaron Judge had a season for the ages in 2022, his 62 home runs surpassing Roger Maris’ American League mark of 61 in 1961. And that was followed by a contract to match.

No, the New York Yankees weren’t about to let their superstar center fielder walk to the San Francisco Giants or anywhere else in free agency, so they secured him through his age 39 season with a nine-year, $360 million contract.

The 2022 AL MVP has been a stalwart since arriving full time at Yankee Stadium in 2017, hitting a then-rookie record of 52 homers to go with 114 RBIs, a .284 average, a .422 on-base percentage and an OPS of 1.049. Rookie of the Year honors would follow, to go along with his first Silver Slugger Award and All-Star appearance.

But that would pale in comparison to his 2022 campaign in which his 62 homers, league-leading 131 RBI, .311 average, .425 on-base percentage and 1.111 OPS would put him in the record books alongside Maris, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle as an all-time Yankee great.

Now it’s 2023 and as is usually the case in the Bronx, the focus is on winning championships. As the team’s captain, Judge will continue to lead by example and push the team toward its ultimate goal of being the last team standing in October/November

Six years after the events of “Death in Paradise,” Kris Marshall returns to the role of Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman in the spin-off crime drama “Beyond Paradise.” Currently streaming on BritBox, the series finds Humphrey out of the “Paradise” of the Caribbean and back on U.K. soil in the fictional southwest town of Shipton Abbott, where he’s now engaged to Martha (cast returnee Sally Bretton) and is surrounded by a new team of police, including colleague Kelby (Dylan Llewellyn, “Derry Girls”) and partner Esther (Zahra Ahmadi, “Doctor Who”).

But life in this seaside burg isn’t as sleepy as it seems and its unusually high crime rate puts Humphrey back to work on a new case in each episode.

For Marshall, stepping back into the character was a no-brainer and he found Humphrey’s maturity six years on and his established relationship with Martha appealing as well.

“You know, they’re a couple who found each other later in life,” he explains, “and (it’s

about) the challenges they have to overcome and the personal journey they go on. You know, wanting to start a family and how to do that later on in life. But to me, it’s the way we change the denouements as well, the denouements are completely different.”

“I think it achieves that thing of like retaining the DNA and the interest of the original show, which is the lightheartedness and the puzzles,” he continues. “But it’s completely unique because it follows their personal relationships more closely.”

Apparently the last drama series to receive an all-weekend “Binge” on Decades – which will be rebranded as the Catchy Comedy Network on March 27 – “Mod Squad” gets a 42-hour showcase starting Saturday, March 25. Produced by Aaron Spelling and Danny Thomas, the show was highly reflective of its era, the late 1960s and early 1970s. Michael Cole, Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton play Pete, Linc and Julie, three young people recruited by police captain Adam Greer (Tige Andrews) to probe then-contemporar y crimes often involving others of their age. A big hit in its time, the program benefited greatly from the easy camaraderie among its stars, who got back together for a 1979 TV-movie sequel.

Dining off the grid and away from it all on Nat Geo’s ‘Restaurants at the End of the World’

Kristen Kish readily admits she was never much of a traveler and as a businesswoman has a real problem with giving up control. So her experiences making the National Geographic docuseries “Restaurants at the End of the World” were more than a few steps out of her comfort zone.

Premiering Tuesday, March 21, the four-part series follows chef and restaurateur Kish as she visits some of the world’s most remote restaurants in Panama, Nor way, Brazil and Maine and meets the chefs and people who keep them going.

These are eateries that are far off the grid, so traditional supply lines for them are nonexistent. So these tenacious and imaginative chefs/ restaurateurs take what nature and local suppliers such as farmers and herders give them to create one-of-a-kind meals and menus for guests who themselves are culinar y adventurers.

Kish embedded herself with these folks to listen to their stories, follow their thought processes and obser ve the day-to-day balancing act it takes to bring their unique fare to the table, which she found helpful in her own kitchen.

“Like we were developing dishes hours before the guests were coming ...,” she says. “You know, the way I come up with dishes before I ser ve them, I test them, we work through them, we taste them,

we give notes, we edit and like a few weeks finally hits the menu.

“ This was like, ‘Oh well, we have the same (ingredient), we have this but like maybe can’t get this so we’ll just tr y something else. And I went, ‘Oh my God! OK.’ So the idea experimentation without fear is something I definitely had taken with me and I will continue taking with me as a constant reminde But the ceding of control was another matter As a chef and restaurateur, Kish is a meticulous planner and likes to maintain control over as she can. So the idea of giving that up to Nature was anathema to her.

“ The commonality between all of them, says, “is the fact that they relinquished so control to their environment, to what will will happen or ‘You know what? I really have dream and I’m just going to go for it. I’ll out the details later.’ And that’s just completely opposite to how I live my life and set up business.”

“It was crazy to me! Like why even?” she continues. “I want to control ever y little aspect to ensure the guest has the experience that them to have. But sometimes the guest wants adventure in the sense of uncertainty as well.
