Kennedy McMann is ‘The Good Lawyer ’ on ‘The Good Doctor ’

With her final round of “Nancy Drew” yet to air, Kennedy McMann already may be on to her next series. Having played detective for what will have been four seasons (with the last one slated to begin May 31 on The CW), the actress is tackling another of television drama’s most popular professions. “ The Good Lawyer” is a proposed spinoff of “ The Good Doctor” that presents its pilot as a new episode of the latter ABC show Monday, March 13, with McMann playing an attorney retained by Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) to represent him in a legal matter

“I’m feeling like a lucky lady,” the pleasant McMann says of her possibility of leaping from one series directly into another. “ When I heard about this spinoff, it definitely caught my attention. David Shore and Liz Friedman, who wrote the episode and run ‘ The Good Doctor,’ asked to meet with me in Vancouver; I was still filming ‘Nancy Drew,’ and they shoot there as well. We met, even before we knew what was happening with ‘Nancy,’ just to see if it was a fit and it went extraordinarily well.”

However, McMann adds, “I don’t think anybody really knew if it was going to work out. Then, when we got our (‘Nancy Drew’) cancellation news, it opened up the opportunity to do ‘ The Good Lawyer’ – which is lovely, as much as I was really sad to see my time

at ‘Nancy’ end. It was a really complex emotional experience. I think all actors feel excited to step into something new after playing the same character for such a long time, which I really did enjoy.”

Starring with McMann in the “Good Lawyer” pilot is “Desperate Housewives” alum Felicity Huffman as Janet Stewart, returning to ABC (and, potentially, weekly TV) as a partner in the firm McMann’s Joni DeGroot works for Those characters are “ at odds with one another” initially, McMann reports. “I think they’re going to have a tumultuous journey that is really compelling.”

Another big lure of “ The Good Lawyer” for McMann is the chance to depict Joni’s struggle with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), a condition that McMann was challenged by herself in younger years. “It was a big part of my life,” she reflects, “and it made me who I am. ”

McMann hopes “ The Good Lawyer” will keep the tone of its parent show if it goes to series. “ There’s so much you can do that can be so impactful, but also welcoming to all sorts of viewers,” she reasons. “(‘ The Good Doctor’) has excellent morals and teaches interesting lessons, and I think that pairing allows it to have great mass appeal. I’m really excited for what’s cooking.”

Mavs hope Ir ving is the final piece to a championship team

The Brooklyn Nets’ recent teardown of the remainder of their “Big Three” was one of the most disheartening things for a basketball fan to see in recent memor y. But you’ll have to excuse the Dallas Mavericks’ faithful if they don’t share that sentiment.

For in getting eight-time All Star point guard Kyrie Ir ving in a trade deadline deal, the Mavs may have vaulted themselves to the forefront of the playoff conversation in the Western Conference.

In his first four games since joining Dallas on Feb. 6, Ir ving has been a monster, averaging 28 points per game on 53.3 percent shooting, with seven assists and 1.3 steals. And from three-point range, he’s been blistering, with a 43 percent success rate.

His most impressive performance came against the Minnesota Timber wolves on Feb. 13, when down by 26 he led a furious charge with 26 fourth quarter points only to fall short on the final possession in a 124-121 loss at home.

Though his time in Brooklyn was a mix of at-times brilliant play, controversy and overall weirdness, the Mavericks hope the 30-year-old Australian can put all that behind him and focus on winning. They’re betting he can form a formidable tandem with their homegrown superstar Luka Doncic and lead the team up the West standings and into a top postseason seeding in the season’s final weeks.

Ir ving and the Mavs can be seen in action Monday, March 13, when they play host to the conference and division rival Memphis Grizzlies in a game airing on ESPN.

Many an actor will tell you they have grown along with their character, be it through a difficult stor y arc or just its life experiences.

Such has the case for Emmanuelle Chriqui, whose “Superman & Lois” alter ego of Lana Lang Cushing enters Season 3, which commences Tuesday, March 14, on The CW, now divorced from husband Kyle (Erik Valdez) and tr ying to figure out how to move for ward with her family but also a woman fully in control as the mayor of Smallville.

“I never in a million years thought that I would ever play a mayor,” the Canadian actress says with a laugh. “I don’t know why Maybe because I’m naturally not a political person at all.”

“ When we started the show, Lana was just this great people pleaser,” she continues, “ not the most empowered, really sort of flailing in her life, tr ying to figure things out and just being that really flawed, perfectly human character And it was just like allowing myself to grow with ever y episode and with the writing and seeing like where she goes, how she evolves. So

from the beginning, like from Season 1 until now, she’s had this incredible transformation from feeling sort of like gun-shy to I think genuinely believing like if you can dream it, you can do it.”

Chriqui readily admits that coming into “Superman & Lois,” she was neither a superhero nor comic book. But after listening to the pitch from series creator Todd Helbing for “this superhero show also mixed in with this ‘Friday Night Lights’ element,” she was sold.

“ When I left the meeting with him, I had an absolute sense of excitement, which is what I wanted to feel,” she says. “And you know, it was I think the best decision that I could have made.”

‘Ordinar y People’ is an extraordinar y film

For his directing debut, Robert Redford couldn’t have done much better than “Ordinar y People.” The deeply moving 1980 screen version of Judith Guest’s novel –being shown by MGM+ Marquee on Monday, March 13, and MGM+ on Wednesday, March 15 – earned an Oscar for Redford among its four wins, which also included best picture. Timothy Hutton picked up a best supporting actor trophy as Conrad Jarrett, a profoundly troubled Chicago-suburb teen whose quest to come to terms with his emotions has a huge impact on other relationships.

The main one is that of his parents, Calvin and Beth, superbly played by Donald Sutherland and (in a notable break from the television image she had cultivated) Mary Tyler Moore. While Calvin is warm and concerned, Beth is cold and impatient ... and though he has tried to look past her flaws, that becomes all but impossible. The superb cast also includes Judd Hirsch and (in her film debut) Elizabeth McGovern.
