100+ Women Who Care Making an impact in the community of Oceanside

Story by Brenda Gough

T

hey are making an impact in the community of Oceanside and after three years as a force to be reckoned with, the group 100 Women Who Care has raised $220,800 for worthy charities. It started in 2006 based on a simple principle that together we can do more. Now 100 Women Who Care has approximately 600 Chapters that are giving back to their communities across North America. Inspired by the work the 100+ Women Who Care Mid-Island chapter in Nanaimo and Ladysmith, five Oceanside women saw a need in this community and founded the Oceanside chapter on January 4, 2017. Debbe Patterson was one of those founding members and said their group continues to grow and currently has 257 members. The benevolent women meet for a maximum of one hour, four times a year where they can nominate a charity of their choice.

Once the charity has been qualified it is added to the Charity Basket and at the beginning of every meeting, three charities are chosen. The member who nominated the charity will then give a five-minute presentation on why she thinks her charity should receive the funds from the group. At the end of the three presentations, members cast a secret ballot for their choice of charity. The charity who receives the most votes is awarded the members' funds. Each member writes a cheque to the charity for $100 and in turn receives a charitable tax receipt for their donation. Patterson who is a member of the organizing committee stated that not only are they gathering with other like-minded women who want to help local charities they are also spreading the word about the worthy causes. “A lot of them I had never heard about before. It creates an awareness of the great organizations in the area. She admitted all of them are worthy and

9

it is hard to choose but whoever they lend a helping hand to makes a huge difference because some of them struggle just to keep the lights on. “For some small charities this amount of money is massive for them and helps them keep being able to do the work that they are doing. They don’t have the base of larger charities,” she acknowledged. Some of their beneficiaries include: Kidsport - Parksville/Qualicum, Oceanside Building Learning Together and the ETRA Therapeutic Riding Association. The ETRA was the recipient of $22,000 at a time when they were in a period of transition and required extra funding for training and equipment. Therapeutic Riding is widely accepted as a beneficial method of improving the physical and/or mental well-being of riders with a wide range of disabilities. 2019 was ETRA’s 30th anniversary and the timely donation was described as a gift from heaven at a time when they would have

been financially challenged to keep up with expenses. Patterson said besides the satisfaction of being philanthropic, there is also some camaraderie that comes from the group and a lot of the women enjoy meeting socially before and after their meetings. She assured that 100 percent of the money goes to the charity. “We run a pretty tight ship. The Bayside Resort has been very generous since we started by donating the meeting room. We rely heavily on our sponsors,” she pointed out. The next meeting is Wednesday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. at The Bayside Resort in Parksville. Visit: www.100womenoceanside.com for more information.

Arrowsmith Potters' Guild If your New Year’s resolution is to discover a relaxing hobby you may want to consider throwing some clay around at the Parksville Train Station Story by Brenda Gough

he art of pottery is creative but for many it is also therapeutic and relaxing. While spinning clay your mind and body are in natural synergy so it is easy to see how this thoughtful, artistic activity can free you of your worries. If your New Year’s resolution is to discover a relaxing hobby you may want to consider throwing some clay around at the Parksville Train Station. The Arrowsmith Potters’ Guild continues to thrive in its quaint home at the VIA Rail Train Station despite questions about the future of the railway on Vancouver Island. Although trains no longer roll past the old train station along the Alberni Highway, there is still plenty of action inside the historic train depot. In fact, once the regions best kept secret, the pottery studio has become so popular that its classes offered in January, February

T

and September fill up quickly. With ten wheels, two kilns, a slab roller and large potting table the studio is home to several accomplished potters and those who are just learning. Moulding clay into art is never boring and there is always great anticipation to see the finished glazed pieces come out of the kiln. Cora Strasky a member of the board and secretary for the guild said funds generated from the working studio and pottery shop contribute to the upkeep of the train station. “We have a lease with The Island Corridor foundation and money we make goes into maintaining the building. It is great they let us rent it. We have put about $30,000 into it the last two years,” she acknowledged. The guild was founded in 1995 by like minded potters in need of studio space and a place to retail their craft. Strasky joined four years ago and she said since then she and some of the founding

17

members have noticed a cultural shift that has seen more people taking up the craft and it not surprising their 2020 classes are almost full. Beginner classes for hand building or taking a spin on the pottery wheel are conducted by experienced instructors and for $190 you get eight three-hour sessions. The Studio is available, free of additional fees, for students to come in during open hours, when other classes are not in session, to practice for the duration of their class. All students are instructed in the Guild Studio Procedures, so they are familiar with the equipment and space if using the studio outside of class times. Strasky said students develop new skills and complete some projects and then they have the privilege of exploring more projects on their own. “Once you have taken a class you can go to the studio and have full access to thousands

of dollars of equipment. I think it is amazing that people have a creative outlet for very little money,” she exclaimed. Strasky added that the shop with members' work is open daily and is an ideal place to purchase a local gift. “The gift shop doesn’t get a lot of traffic because it is out of the way but when people come in … they are thrilled. It is a neat little gallery with 20 artists featured in the shop. Prices are good and people are thrilled to get hand made art.” For more information stop by studio at 600 Alberni Highway, call 250-954-1872 or visit: www.arrowsmithpottersguild.bc.ca.

It could be eating healthier, losing weight and implementing some form of exercise into your routine. If lacing up runners and starting a running program is one of your resolutions joining the Learn to Run program put on by the Oceanside Running Club Association (ORCA) may be just what you need to get a good training plan that matches your goals. Whether your aim is to gain or regain a level of fitness, ORCA’s 2020 running clinic can help you set goals and achieve them and connect with people just like you. Program leader Doug Brown said it is not just for ultra-marathoners. “This is designed for adults who want to learn healthy running skills in a safe and supportive environment.” Brown explained. You can’t hit a target if you don’t have one and the feeling of accomplishment gained

through achieving your goals can easily be realised by signing up for the run clinic which starts on February 5. Sessions will take place weekly every Wednesday evening between 6 – 6:45 p.m. and will build over the weeks to the final clinic on May 6. The clinic registration fee of $45.00 includes the race entry fee for the Oceanside Mothers’ Day 5k Run/Walk the following Sunday May 10. There's nothing like a race on your calendar to motivate you to earn a finisher’s medal and perhaps completing the popular run through beautiful Rathtrevor Provincial Park is just the ticket. Brown said there is a growing contingent of Mother’s Day 5K runners who annually join their training sessions as a part of their race preparations. “You may have been a runner once and want to run again. You may be recovering from injury and want to regain your fitness in a structured manner. However, you don’t

23

have to be a runner or have previous running experience to take part.” He did state that participants do need to be able to walk comfortably at a reasonably brisk pace for around 45 minutes and be without any underlying health issues. He assured the program is very carefully structured starting with walk/run sessions. “The key is to gradually increase the running intervals while reducing the walk breaks as slowly but surely the participants build their stamina and running ability.” ORCA was founded back in 1997 and since then has been providing a community for runners from Bowser through to Nanoose Bay Brown said the club includes a diverse group of people who love to run and meet in the spirit of fun, good health and friendship. “A supportive group can help you gain motivation and commitment to do it. We encourage a buddy system.” He said there are homework assignments that call for running on other days. “Often people find a running buddy they

can meet up with to do those runs with. It helps get you out the door when someone else is going through exact same thing you are,” he observed. He said until daylight savings time in March, they stick to well lit streets and sidewalks and they encourage people to wear reflective clothing and use flashlights. Between 50 and 60 percent of ORCA clinic participants participate in the Mother’s Day event and Brown acknowledged that there is no better feeling then crossing the finish line. “It is a celebratory measure of the fact that 14 weeks ago you were walking.” For more details contact Brown at 250-2488342 or email learntorun@orcarunning.ca.
