Campbell River Community Centre February 1st, 2020 The first Saturday of February each year will be our night to celebrate the year past. And, now the added twist for this year... The proceeds from the evening’s cocktails, dinner, silent auction and live auction will be shared with the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island in support of the building of the Qwalayu House.

The Children’s Health Foundation officially launched a $7 million fundraising campaign to build a home away from home in Campbell River. The 10-bedroom home, named Qwalayu House, will welcome families and expectant mothers, largely from the west and northern regions of Vancouver Island, who need a place to stay while accessing the adjacent North Island Hospital and nearby health care services.

Brian Preston and wife, Connie Preston, moved to the island in 1975 (from Edmonton) with their 3 children to purchase their jewellery store. Eventually purchasing 2 more locations, one in Campbell River and another in Parksville. Brian grew up in the jewellery business with his parents, who owned Preston Jewellers in Flin Flon Manitoba, then moved to Edmonton to work 8 years in wholesale jewellery. As a very proud Rotarian for 36 year’s who really loved his community. He participated in the wheelchair delivery event in Peru and contributes to initiatives in

Africa and Thailand. Brian and his family believe in giving back to our community and developing countries. As the children grew to adulthood, the eldest daughter, Kimberley, continued working in the business. They worked side by side for over 15 years before his death in 2017. The family business has become a landmark in Campbell River over the years. Since the closing was announced, customers have been bringing in flowers, cards and wine to say thank you for all the wonderful memories they have. The Preston family is very sad to close the business that their lives have revolved around for almost 45 years.

Three old ladies are sitting around a table playing bridge and bragging about their sons. “My Georgie,” says Agatha, “does my grocery shopping and always brings home a bouquet of flowers.” “That’s very nice about George”, says Mildred. “But it doesn't compare to my Christopher. Every Friday he takes me to lunch at a new restaurant. Two weeks ago he flew me to Chicago for lunch and a show!” “Ha!” Says Camilla “That's nothing! Twice a week my Jackson pays someone $200 an hour just so he can sit on their couch and talk about me!"
