Paul was talking about public prayer in the local church. What is good? Prayer for political leaders (verses 1-2) is good. Good means, “fitting, proper and advantageous”. Additionally and wonderfully: Such prayer pleases God. The word “pleases” describes something that is welcome and brings pleasure. We bring God pleasure every time we pray for our leaders; indeed, every time we pray for anybody. Pleasing God is the highest calling of every Christian and every Christian church.

There are conditions to our public prayer: Verse 8 speaks of lifting up holy hand in prayer. This is Paul’s way of affirming that we must pray out of a right relationship with God. This doesn’t mean we never sin or are as perfectly holy as God. It does mean that we are confessing and forsaking our sin and that we are not hiding willful sin in our lives.

Additionally, we must be in right relationship with others when we pray: “without anger or disputing”. Unresolved anger and a contentious spirit will hinder prayer. People who carry anger in their spirit will struggle with prayer and people who have an argumentative chip on their shoulders will never enjoy an effective prayer life. I want our prayers, public and private to be acceptable and pleasing to God. Some people resent repetition in prayer. God doesn’t. He encourages us to persist in bringing requests to Him. Public prayer rivets our focus on God and prepares us to hear from God. We shall persist in pleasing God through public prayer. God never wearies of hearing us.
