OUR INNER

C MPASS There were more taboo subjects years ago than there are now. Taboo subjects were things well-raised people just didn’t talk about. Refined people didn’t discuss politics at social gatherings. In other circles you never talked about money. Sex was definitely a taboo. In fact, fifty years ago sex was THE taboo. No longer.

Where EVERYONE Is Welcome!! SUNDAY SERVICE 10 AM March 24, 2013

Mom Boodle used to watch TV ads, sigh, shake her head and rhetorically ask: “Is there nothing sacred or private any more?” Not much and less all the time. A dying culture is always a vulgar, immodest, increasingly depraved culture. But there is still one taboo left. There is still one subject people avoid, push away, deny, feel uncomfortable with.

MESSAGE Pastor Christian Brouwer WORSHIP Adam Homfeld

We disguise THE taboo with euphemisms: deep sixed, croaked, kicked the bucket, bought the farm, laying a harp, pushing daisies, passed away, passed on, bought it, caught it, checked out, departed, cashed in, bit the dust. Good grief, there are a lot of ways to avoid saying “dead”.

HEAD USHER Ernie Plett

Moderns have relegated God to myth and suspicion but moderns can’t quite make peace with death, the last taboo. Jesus Christ walked calmly to his execution in the full knowledge that death was his destiny, his calling from God. He would die and rise again and in dying and rising again he would deal death a deathblow. Death died when Jesus died and life eternal arose when Christ arose. Palm Sunday was just another step in the grand redemption plan. The crowds would cheer; the crowds would cry for blood. Satan would relish his imagined victory only to discover he was finished, defeated for all eternity. Christians need not fear death as if death was the forever final. Christians know death is not a period that ends our existence but rather a passage to the delights of everlasting life.
