Some dim people insist that animals don’t have emotions. Have they never watched a dog play with an old sock or a kitten amuse itself with a bit of string? Dogs have emotions and can even use them to con us. Dogs love to play and can find excuses to wheedle us into playing.

We are in danger of losing the spontaneity of fun and games. I do enjoy a good, clean, creative comic but i”m having second thoughts about comedic concerts. There’s something wrong with buying a ticket and planning to laugh at that particular time. Laughter should surprise us. Humor should ambush us along the way. Play ought to break out unexpected like.

Stress drains spontaneity out of our lives. We keep to the schedule, slavishly doing what the “to do” tyrant mandates. Jesus was not enslaved. In the middle of great success he could decide it was time for a mini-vacation and just walk away. He would have driven his PR agent bonkers had he had one. Tossing responsibility to the wind and just goofing off can be one of the healthiest things stressed out people can do. Can be. I’m not advocating irresponsibility. I’m just saying that most of our stressors are going nowhere and will be waiting for us when we roll out of bed. They’re scheduled. So why not just have some unscheduled fun once in a while? Tickle a friend, borrow a dog, chase a cat, buy a clean joke book; laugh on principle. Yep. I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna fly that great kite. At least that’s the plan. Plan? Sigh.
