Communion is an affirmation of God’s reality in the present. The church is still bearing witness to the reality of God in spite of terrible persecution all around the globe. What is amazing. Times change but the faithfulness of God does not. People may fail but God never does. People tend to dismiss or minimize the power of the church in the now but the now is as amazing as ever. God is still in control and what is is awesome.

Communion is a prophecy of what will be. The church will not only survive in the future and not only survive until Jesus comes but the church will thrive until Jesus comes. The future is in God’s hands and God’s hands are awesome hands.

Communion reminds us that we are part of a family stretching back to the cross and ahead to the victorious return of Christ. We are fellow pilgrims with all who have gone before us and with all who will follow us. Communion affirms our eternal destiny and our eternal friendship in Jesus Christ. Communion reminds us that we are family. Families have spats, trials and challenges but families persevere in love. Communion is a protest against shallow relationships, against selfishness, against conformity to the spirit of the age. Communion calls us to higher values, deeper relationships and courageous discipleship. We’re part of what was, what is and what will be. And all of it is beyond wonderful.
