C MPASS Well, that was fun. I have been coughing, sweating, enduring chills, a sore throat and a deep feeling of general malaise for the last seven days. Welcome to the pandemic. Not many of us have dodged this nasty little bug. The only cheerful side has been time to stare at the ceiling or walls and think. Here’s a sampling:

I received an old fashioned letter. Someone actually wrote on paper, folded the paper, put the friendly words in an envelope and sent it through the mail with a stamp and all. It was delightful, personal and affirming. I miss those old-time real letters. I responded in kind.

I decided to worry about the church budget. On one hand I’ve been amazed at the faithfulness of God’s people and at how God has always provided. Unfortunately I have honed my worry skills to a fine pitch. Perhaps you’re like me? The challenge: Remember God’s faithfulness and trust him. Worry is natural, understandable, reasonable and a waste of time as well as an insult to God.

Why is television so dreadful? Feeling enervated to the point of catatonic TV viewing illustrated how banal, vacuous and insulting to the intelligence most of it is. The problem: it’s not terrible enough to shut off but it’s incapable of adding anything of value to life. Quiet, honest reflection reminded me how blessed I have been. Jesus Christ has changed everything. Jackie Gleason used to luxuriate with a glass of booze: “How sweet it is.” He had no idea. How sweet, how marvelous to know Christ and to face every life situation with his input and friendship! Incredible. Did you know that shrimp are all born male but as they “mature” they become female? Now there was a fact that set my mind to some serious thought.
