The Message renders Ecclesiastes 8:11 as: Because the sentence against evil deeds is so long in coming, people in general think they can get by with murder.

So what is mankind’s problem? Is our problem a lack of knowledge? Or is our problem a lack of will? Is the answer to evil more education or is our problem more fundamentally rooted in our fallen nature?

I read a fascinating survey this week that bumped my mind down this path. The long survey distills down to this: The majority of Americans believe morals are in serious decline and that the best answer is the Bible. Unfortunately there is a serious disconnect between belief and action. The majority of the same people who recognized the moral decline and recognized the Bible as the answer stated that they nevertheless are not open to the wisdom of the Bible. They know the answer is there for the taking but they would rather carry on down the moral drain.

The report went on to say: “Americans overwhelmingly recognize the decline of morality in our nation. Americans are telling us that the cure for declining morality is sitting on our bookshelves. But more than half of Americans are simply letting the cure gather dust.” I wouldn’t be too hard on these people. They are not at all unlike the rest of us. Don’t you often find it easier to know the right than to do the right? Don’t you find it easier to admire the Bible than to read it? Don’t you often find it easier to pay lip service to the Bible than to do what it says? Unfortunately, I do too.
