C MPASS Why do animals play? Why do children play? I read once that one mark of greater intelligence is playfulness. The more intelligent a creature the more likely they are to play. Crows play, dogs play and some preachers play. Evolutionists have tried to explain play solely as behavior designed to aid survival. Rubbish.

Chris and I went out for a drive the other night. We stopped at a little hobby farm to watch some lambs playing in a pasture. Four black and one tiny white lamb were having fun. They raced around, bumped heads, pirouetted, and played king of the hill on a tiny mound of dirt. One would stand next to Mom for a few seconds and then suddenly dash off, jumping, spinning and racing as fast as their tiny legs would carry them.

Watching them made us laugh. Why did they do it? Come on. They were simply enjoying the thrill of living. Their poor moms stood stock-still and frankly looked a little weary. One of the Moms moved toward us and stared at us. She was aware that we were watching and kept a wary eye on us. The crazy kids were oblivious.

Play is not only a mark of intelligence; play is healthy. Play is good for weary nerves and tired minds. Play is fun and what’s wrong with fun. Surely God gave us funny bones for a reason. The wary Mom was being a responsible adult. We all have to grow up and shoulder adult responsibilities but we don’t have to stop playing. Playful people stay young at heart. Playful people defuse stress. Playful people are fun to be around. Playful people are smart. Those silly cavorting lambs made me laugh and sigh. I haven’t been playing much lately. Do yourself a favour: go play.
