EQUAL MARRIAGE RIGHTS FOR ALL

A rainbow flag, symbolising the gay and lesbian community, flew above Whitehall in London last July to celebrate the news that the legislation for same sex marriages would receive Royal Ascent. This was granted on Saturday 29th March this year, marking a milestone in British history. So what does the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 mean? Same sex couples can now have a religious ceremony, rather just entering into civil partnerships, which were legalised in 2005. They can still enter into a civil partnership if they wish, and those in an existing civil partnership can convert their relationship into a marriage. Those who wish to change gender in an existing marriage can also legally do so without ending their marriage. Same sex couples can marry outside of England and Wales, as long as one partner is originally from the UK, marrying in the UK is possible, the country they wish to marry in accepts and there are insufficient facilities for them to enter into a marriage under the law of the overseas territory. Cheers filled the room as Peter McGraith

A WEDDING FAIR WITH A As mentioned above, Saturday 29th March 2014 saw a momentous change in marriage legislation, as same sex couples were for the first time legally able to get married. Since civil partnerships were formed in 2005 some 60,000 couples have registered their partnerships across the country, and with over 310 civil partnerships in the South West in 2012 alone, the new changes put in place will see not only more couples being married for the first time, but also be able in the forthcoming months to convert their civil partnership to a marriage. In a bid to celebrate this new legislation and provide an opportunity for same sex couples to meet with prospective suppliers, Gloucestershire-based Idyllic Creations, along with Love x, is to hold one of the only gay wedding fairs in the South West of England this year. This will take place at Gloucestershire Pride’s wedding village, a new part of the annual Pride event, which is happening this year in Gloucester on Saturday 14th June. Organised by the experienced team at Idyllic Creations and sponsored by Classic Marquees of Malvern,

and David Cabreza were pronounced legally married, after 17 years together. It was at one minute past midnight that the happy couple wed in North London, becoming one of the first to have a same sex marriage in England. Nikki Pettit and Tania Ward, who held their ceremony in Brighton, were the first female same sex couple to wed. Mike McBeth and Matthew Symonds from Southville were the first to marry in Bristol at the Bristol Register Office, after 20 years of living together. On the day before these emotional ceremonies took place, David Cameron wrote an article for Europe’s largest gay news service, Pink News. He said the ceremonies sent a “powerful message” and that he would never want to deny anyone the love and support that he has within his own marriage. “When people’s love is divided by law, it is the law that needs to change,” declared Cameron. At West Weddings we celebrate this significant change in the law and wish every couple who has wed since the 29th a big congratulations!

difference this is not only a wedding fair for same sex couples but one for everyone, and one that is part of a much bigger event. Sid Kostromin, Production Manager for Gloucestershire Pride, says: “We’re excited to be able to bring this event to Gloucester. It will offer couples the ability to seek advice and services from hand-picked suppliers who look forward to working with any couple, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. As well as attending the fair, couples will also be able to make a day of it too, due to everything

else that is happening at the park.” Not only will there be 40+ suppliers making up the village but the event features two live music stages, a dance music arena, community stalls, funfair rides, caterers and a bar. The event starts at 12pm, with the Pride Parade making its way through the historic city of Gloucester and Gloucester Docks to Gloucester Park, where all the fun will take place. LET THEM EAT CAKE Ann Pickard of The Icing Centre has been making wedding cakes for more than 20 years, using sugarpaste and royal icing to create traditional, contemporary and novelty cakes that are instantly recognisable. Luckily for all you West Country couples Ann is based in the South West, although she also delivers to venues in the region.

Your wedding cake is the centrepiece of the wedding breakfast and Ann meets every couple to make sure she creates the cake of their dreams. Using the couple’s ideas, photographs and colour themes she can turn their design into edible art. The possibilities are endless; cakes that show places a couple met or went on holiday: fantasy cakes from a favourite film or novelty cakes depicting a shared hobby or interest; contemporary cakes based on favourite art or colour schemes; or a more traditional cake in cream, white or pale shades with subtle flowers and piping. And as well as looking fab they’ll taste delicious too, with fruitcake, chocolate, vanilla, carrot, lemon and more on offer! Ann is also a specialist in personalised wedding toppers - a mini version of the wedding couple sitting atop the cake. Wedding guests love this touch and it’s

something to keep. For a genuine likeness, Ann makes the figures using photographs and she often has a sneak preview of the wedding dress to create the bride model! If you’re planning your wedding then you need to head over to Ann’s website, as she’s currently giving away one of her amazing cakes (up to the value of £495) to one lucky couple. Timings for your photographs, affording your perfect venue, an interfering family?

YOU NEED TO ASK THE EXPERTS... These useful tips from our industry experts will leave you stress free.

Camera ready

Dream wedding

How much time should I allow for photography at our wedding? We’d like some formal shots of the family but also some of just us.

I’ve always wanted a fairytale wedding in a castle but I don’t have the budget to match. Is there any way my dreams can come true?

Richard Dunmore, Bath

Katie MacDonald, Keynsham

In the family My family are driving me insane with their ‘helpful’ suggestions for our wedding day. How can I tell them to just leave us alone to sort it out? Linda Wilson, Salisbury

Photographer Charlie Birchmore of Your Pictures says:

Jennifer Broad, wedding co-ordinator at Thornbury Castle says:

Helen Dorritt from West Weddings says:

The essence of a wedding is to bring two people together to celebrate their love for each other, surrounded by the friends and family. A photographic record of the day is important, but it shouldn’t impinge on the enjoyment of the day. I always have a list of the must-have groups, ensuring that time is not spent on the day thinking this through. Depending on the size of the wedding, these group shots should take 20-40 minutes. I then give the couple time to enjoy their day mixing with guests, and schedule their photography for 20 minutes just before the meal, so whilst the guests are finding their seats it allows them a moment to themselves. In addition to the group and couple’s photography I’ll be taking pictures of the day as it unfolds. And, luckily, this style of photography is unobtrusive and doesn’t need any set allocation of time - it’s all about capturing a spontaneous moment.

The first thing you need to do is create a list of your wishes and prioritise what is most important. List what’s essential and what’s classed as an extravagance. A few questions to ask are: “would we consider a weekday wedding to get the venue we want?” and “would we consider reducing our guest list to get the right venue?” If the answer is yes to these questions then a fairytale castle wedding is a possibility. Here at Thornbury Castle we’ve seen lots of happy couples get married and each wedding has been memorable in its own way. Money can be saved with handmade stationery, cakes and individual personal touches, and instead spent on the car that will really make your partner’s day special or added to the budget for the perfect dress! To keep costs down further, utilise the skills of your friends and family. Remember also that none of your guests are going to know what to expect at your wedding, so anything that you do will be special and magical.

FFI: 01242 277573, WWW.YOURPICTURES.CO

FFI: 01454 281182, WWW.THORNBURYCASTLE.CO.UK

The most important thing to remember is that it’s your special day, not your family’s! It can be tricky when your loved ones want to get more involved than you really want them to be, as it’s a fine balance between not hurting their feelings and ensuring that you don’t get railroaded into decisions you’re not happy with. But it is your and your partner’s celebration, and that should be at the heart of all the planning that you do. If it really is getting to the stage where you’d rather someone didn’t come than continue driving you crazy with suggestions that aren’t required, then honesty is the best policy. Sit down with them and explain, politely but firmly, that you and your partner have clear ideas about what you want from the day, and that you have everything in hand. Hopefully this will show them that their ‘help’ isn’t needed and that they’ve stepped over the line. If you feel you can trust a family member who is clearly desperate to help, it can be useful to delegate one specific task to them, such as sorting out the favours or organising hotels for guests. This way, they feel that they’re being of use, you get one more task ticked off, and everyone is happy!

Bristol and Somerset NEW WEDDING AWARDS FOR

News

Eastwood Park and other local suppliers celebrate their success in the first ever Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards, organised by the Wedding Wishing Well Foundation.

A

new regional wedding award ceremony debuted this year, which celebrates the best wedding suppliers in the West. The Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards were created by the Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, a charity which organises weddings for those with terminal illnesses, with the aim of recognising excellence within the wedding sector. Votes were cast by real couples, to celebrate those suppliers they felt had gone the extra mile. Eastwood Park, the popular country house wedding venue in South Gloucestershire, was delighted to win the inaugural Best Wedding Venue in the South West. Wedding and conference manager Claire Shea said: “It’s so important to us that those who have really experienced what we can offer here at Eastwood Park, as a friendly, distinctive out-of-town wedding venue, have been those who have given us a huge endorsement. It has been our brides, grooms and their families and friends who have given us their votes, and that really counts for a lot.” Eastwood Park was assessed across four main areas including the overall standard of service, the quality of the venue, the value for money aspect and the level of commitment shown. Other winners on the night included Stacey Jade for her hair and make-up services (check out Stacey’s gorgeous styles in our photo shoot this issue!), and West Weddings’ very own Kirsten Butler won the best stylist.

Judging across all categories was led by the founder of the Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, Naomi Thomas. When she was just 28, Naomi discovered she had secondary breast cancer. There’s never a good time to receive such news, but it was particularly hard for Naomi as she had just given birth to her son and desperately wanted to get married, however, her diagnosis put both financial and naturally huge emotional strains on the couple. Yet thanks to the efforts of a local wedding planner back in 2011, local businesses were encouraged to donate their services and, with their help and commitment, she married Graham. It was these very personal experiences and Naomi’s desire to help others facing similar challenges that she was inspired to launch the charity which is now supporting other couples in equally emotional situations. Eastwood Park has taken the cause to its heart this year and has been raising money through a range of events, with everything from wedding fairs, open evenings and raffles as well as cake and book sales. The venue’s mix of social activities during the rest of the year will, it’s hoped, boost even further the funds already raised for this very worthy cause. Although this gorgeous country house is available on an exclusive basis for weddings and celebrations, at other times it regularly attracts many other visitors to enjoy Sunday lunch, the monthly Pie and Pudding Club or just a special summer tea on the terrace. The

venue remains hugely popular, not least because of its setting with stunning views across the Berkeley Vale, coupled with its picturesque grounds of both meadow and formal gardens. After the success of 2014, the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards will be returning next year, so if you’re getting married soon, or are a recent bride or groom, and want to say an extra thank you to the suppliers you enjoyed working with, head to the awards website later on this year to cast your vote. Rocking the frock

News

Once your wedding is over, your dress usually ends up stored in a box in the attic, or perhaps sold to another lucky bride. But there’s another option that’s been gaining popularity across the world: trash the dress. Trash the dress is the opportunity for you to wear your dress one last time and to have some fun, taking photographs in locations that contrast with your outfit. You can choose to take it literally and destroy your gown – some brides have covered theirs in paint, walked into the sea or taken a pair of scissors to it. Or, if the thought of ruining your dress fills you with horror, you can still opt for a fun shoot that keeps your dress intact – the choice is yours. And it doesn’t just have to be the bride, either: grooms can get in on the act by also coming along to the shoot wearing their wedding outfit. Maryell Finisterre is a local photographer who offers this type of shoot. “Trash the dress sessions are great fun for the newlyweds and often create the opportunity for some of the best shots!” says Maryell. After all, away from the nerves and emotion of a wedding day, this is your chance to dress up one more time and truly let your hair down. Once the photos are taken, Maryell can professional retouch and manipulate your images, and supplies a range of presentation and album services.

As well as trash the dress, you’ll be pleased to know that Maryell also offers more traditional wedding photography services, covering engagement shoots, your hen do and, of course, the wedding day itself. Check out her

With hot rods delivering the bride and groom, Abbie and Daniel Grant’s 50s-style wedding had a distinct flash of grease lightning about it. Jessica Carter finds out more.

espite going to the same school, Abbie and Daniel didn’t meet for the first time until several years after they’d both left. Having locked eyes one evening in a bar, the pair spent the whole night on the dance floor. Clearly impressed by each other’s moves, they waltzed into a relationship, unaware that seven years later they’d be donning their dancing shoes again – at their own wedding. It was apt, then, that the big day took on a rock ‘n’ roll feel, with Abbie sporting a 50s prom-style wedding dress, and the DJ spinning some retro classics. “We didn’t intentionally have a theme, we just put together everything that we love,” says Abbie. This came through in all the details which the couple chose thoughtfully to reflect their personalities. “We had a bottle of orange squash on every table because Daniel doesn’t drink, and we had collected tea cups and saucers from charity shops for our centre pieces and put candles in them to light up the tables,” explains Abbie. “I also found a broken typewriter in a charity shop and fixed it, and it became our guest book.” Finding the right venue was going to be a challenge, as this party-loving pair don’t consider themselves the traditional type. They wanted their day to be somewhere with a fun, relaxed and distinctive ambience. They came across their chosen venue – Paintworks in Bristol – by happy coincidence, and quickly realised it fitted their brief down to a tee. “We stumbled across a graffiti exhibition being held at this event space,” recalls Abbie. “It had exposed brick work, pipes on show and metal beams – we fell in love with it!” This contemporary venue offset the vintage quirkiness smashingly. Throw in a couple of hot rods, a bouncy castle, and a playlist of 90s classics, and you had a fantastically eclectic effect which happily reflected the couple’s tastes. Speaking of reflecting tastes, Daniel wanted the wedding breakfast to be a down-to-earth, fussfree affair, not being a fan of posh nosh. It made sense, then, that the main course came courtesy

of a traditional fish and chip van, while dessert was served from an ice cream tricycle. The latter certainly went down well with the younger guests .“We loved that when the ice cream tricycle turned up, all the kids went to ask their parents for money to buy one and couldn’t believe it was free!” the couple says. While the groom sported a Marc Wallace suit, this rock ‘n’ roll bride wore a pretty prom dress which she found in A Class Brides, along with some Vivienne Westwood heels. The look was finished off with a piece of her Grandma’s vintage jewellery – a very precious ‘something old’. As well as Abbie’s beloved Granny, there were a few others who contributed something special to the day. “We had some fantastic friends and family helping us,” says Abbie. A comrade of the couple, who happens to be a real graphics whizz, designed bespoke wedding invitations, while the bride’s mum handmade the favour bags from vintage fabric and bows. The groom’s mum came up trumps as well: “Daniel’s mum is a florist and is better than all the competition out there, so she created her masterpieces for us,” says Abbie. It wasn’t just the floral decorations that were catching people’s eyes, though. “Daniel is very much into his drag racing and hot rods, so we had the pick of cars. Daniel drove his own Ford Popular and I turned up in our friend’s Cadillac.” These savings meant the couple could splash out on enough confectionery to keep their 300 guests’ sweet tooths well and truly satisfied for the day. And when it came to shopping for the sweetie stash, the couple were like kids in a candy store – literally! “It was the best shopping trip ever.” Towards the end of the day, some of the big kids – no doubt having fuelled up on sweets – decided to head for the bouncy castle to cause mischief. “A story that really stands out was when the groom’s mates took over the bouncy castle to practise their wrestling moves,” recalls Abbie. One of the guests, being a true and loyal Scotsman, had to, ahem, properly attire himself before jumping on –

much to the amusement of the newlyweds – while another of Daniel’s friends managed to acquire a broken rib among all the excitement. The casualty was in such high spirits he didn’t even know of his bouncy castle-related injury until after the big day, though. “Maybe it had something to do with the shandy or two he’d had!” Abbie suggests. Of the entire day, perhaps the fondest memory the couple have is a special rendition of the classic song, ‘I Wanna Give You Devotion’, performed live by DJ Mikee Freedom, who is also the co-writer of the song. Mikee then stayed on the decks all evening while the couple danced the night away, just as they did the first time they met.

imon’s proposal came as such a shock to Jade that she doesn’t even remember herself answering him among all the excitement. Luckily, the whole event was captured on camera, so there’s no danger of either of them forgetting any further details. “Simon had made arrangements for us to do a photo shoot for a bit of fun,” explains Jade. “We chose our outfits and giggled as we discussed what poses we would do – I had no idea what was about to happen. About an hour into the shoot Simon said ‘give us a twirl Jade’. When I spun around he was on one knee – I couldn’t believe it. The entire thing was captured on camera; my face was a picture!” The pair had known each other for over ten years before this moment, during which time they had become best friends. Their first meeting took place when both their churches took part with the National Mass Choir, and the bride’s singing voice snared her the attention of the young man she’d eventually come to marry. Says Simon: “I remember the first time I heard Jade’s voice. It was so soothing; hearing her sing just blew me away.” Indeed, having been so taken by her from the beginning and realising that he wanted more than just friendship, Simon eventually took that all-important deep breath and told Jade how he really felt. And thank goodness he did, as it prompted Jade to realise that her elusive Mr Right was, in fact, not so elusive at all. “It took me over ten years to realise that the man of my dreams was standing right in front of me!” she reports. These best friends soon became an item and neither ever looked back. “I realised he was everything I ever prayed for in a man and more; I can’t believe I almost missed out on being with such a special and wonderful person,” Jade says. For this bride-to-be, there was only one place to hold her wedding: at Bethel United Church in St George, Bristol. Jade’s been attending this church since the age of five, when her godmother used to take her to Sunday school. It’s also through this church that the couple met, so it seemed more than fitting for them to wed there. The wedding celebrations then continued

afterwards with a reception at stylish Bristol hotel Cadbury House. Simon and Jade wanted a spiritual and uplifting ceremony, one that maintained their Christian values and which their 300 guests could really enjoy. Also, with both of the newlyweds having beloved family members sadly absent from their day, there was even more focus on giving everyone real cause for celebration. “It was important to me that our families had a joyous occasion to attend,” explains Simon. And as they’d hoped, the festivities really were enjoyed by all. “We clapped our hands, we sang and we danced as the musicians played – it was complete jubilation,” Jade remembers. “It made me so happy when my work colleagues, who don’t regularly attend church, remarked how incredibly happy and blessed they felt at the ceremony.” Simon also remembers the buzz, saying, “there was an amazing atmosphere in the church.” Both families played a big part in the preparations for the big day, as did the couple’s friends and church groups. The cakes, flowers, decorations, music, wedding favours and stationary were all taken care of by people close to the couple, both of whom move in circles of considerable talent! Jade’s elegant wedding outfit proved that less sometimes really is more. The bride wore almost no jewellery, save for a bracelet bought for her by her cousin, while her hair was arranged into a simple vintage-style up do. To choose her dress, Jade visited The Mews in Clifton, where she, her mother and maid of honour Astrid enjoyed being made to feel like royalty by the staff. It was first time lucky for this soon-to-be bride; a simple but classic Suzanne Neville number featuring handmade Buckingham lace was the final choice, having been the very first dress she tried on! Jade obviously chose very well, as the dress had just the effect every bride hopes for. “The highlight for me was seeing Jade glide down the church aisle,” says Simon, who admits to perhaps being a tad choked up. Luckily, his best man Daniel was beside him, encouraging

him to watch and ensuring he didn’t miss a second. As for Jade’s favourite part of the day, that came later... The couple’s story began, over ten years ago, with Jade’s singing having caught the attention of Simon. On their wedding day, though, it was the groom’s turn to impress with his voice, with Simon serenading Jade during the ceremony. This, she says, is her most treasured moment of the day. “The song was so fitting – it described perfectly his love for me and the journey he went through waiting over ten years for me to be his wife. He sang beautifully; I still get butterflies just thinking about it.”

hen Marie attended a gig that her friend from work was playing in at the Fiddlers Club, she was unaware that her attention would be stolen by the bass player of the band, Dan. In 2004, a year later, their romance began but the attraction between these two was instant. Marie jokes that “stages can make anyone look hot,” but acknowledges Dan’s “good sense of humour” as what also caught her eye. A shared love for fun, festivals and cider made these two the perfect pair, and a Christmas Day proposal in 2011 brought joy and relief to Marie, who says, “I never thought Dan would ever propose. We’d been together for seven years and I was starting to give up hope!” This couple went from a winter proposal to a wedding on the hottest day of the year, tying the knot on Saturday 13th July 2013. Their chosen venue for the ceremony was Leigh Court in Bristol with the reception being held at Paintworks. “Dan loved Leigh Court for the grandeur and I loved Paintworks because it was quirky, so we compromised. I think Dan just wanted to add more pressure and make me walk down the huge sweeping staircase,” Marie recalls. They arrived at the venue in VW split screen campervans and much to their excitement, the Champagne in the girls’ van was replaced with cider – a perfect start to the day for this West Country bride! Marie got her beautiful dress from Allison Jayne Bridalwear in Bristol, and then took her friend Rachel on a road trip to find a stockist of the multi-award winning wedding jewellery brand, Glitzy Secrets, so she could choose a matching hairclip and bracelet. The men’s suits were purchased at Burton, with the perfect fit

ensured by Mark Anthony Tailoring in Bristol. A personal day that reflected them as a couple was important to Marie, so the day was filled with anecdotal memories that the pair wanted to share with their family and friends. The day had a vintage theme, with lots of quirky features including a fancy dress photo booth. The food reflected these festival lovers with Pieminster pies, mash and peas to fill everyone up before they danced the night away to the Kirris Riviere Blues Band. And as the bride, groom and guests enjoyed the night, Nova Photography expertly photographed all the details. “Katherine and Steve captured the day perfectly,” says Marie. “We wanted natural and fun images, and we definitely got that.” Marie worked hard to craft personal touches for the day, including making 300 metres of bunting! “My friends and family were really helpful too, though, attending ‘craft club’ round our house - they’ll do anything for a glass of wine!” jokes Marie. A helping hand was also called in. “My secret weapon was stylist Kirsten Butler, The Little Wedding Helper. I couldn’t have done it without her – she was amazing!” There was also a homemade touch in the cake, which was made by their talented friend Caroline. The day went exactly to plan and Marie and Dan loved every second. “There were so many stand out moments,” says Marie. “It was so funny seeing the look on Dan’s face as I walked down the aisle to ‘Eye of the Tiger’. I was delighted when my friends surprised me with a memory washing line. I enjoyed the best men’s speech, which was performed on a guitar, and I was surprised as Dan’s old band re-formed on the evening for a few songs. We couldn’t have asked for anything more!” Dan

sums it up beautifully: “It was a great day that had the year’s best weather, in some of the best surroundings, with everyone who has ever mattered to us being there to witness and enjoy our day as much as we did.”

he beautiful scenery Jenny and Carl took in after trekking to the top of Mount Rinerhorn in Switzerland made for an extraordinary picnic. But it was Jenny’s partner, Carl, getting down on one knee that would make the day truly unforgettable. The pair met at university where they lived in adjoining corridors in the halls of residence. “I remember thinking Carl was tall, dark and handsome”, says Jenny. Fast forward over a decade, and the proposal was everything Jenny hoped for. “We had talked about getting married, so I suspected it was coming. We’d been together over 10 years, so I knew Carl would make it pretty special as there is a romantic side to him!” says Jenny. Sure enough, Carl’s romantic gesture impressed as Jenny recalls “He couldn’t have picked a more romantic setting. You could see for miles!” The unique proposal was made even more special with a gold antique Edwardian diamond flower cluster ring with cutwork, though Carl confessed on the way back down the mountain that he had taken rings back to the jewellers eight times before deciding on the perfect one! It was important to the couple for the ceremony to be a small and special. “We wanted a private, intimate family ceremony - no fuss, just us,” explains Carl. Family ties were celebrated as Jenny’s sisters Elizabeth and Victoria were bridesmaids and Carl’s brother, Daniel, was best man. Jenny and Carl decided on the venue and photographer together, whilst Jenny took the reins with the flowers and decoration. Carl chose the wine, champagne and the meal. Most impressively, all of these intricate details were planned in just two months. “We didn’t want to spend another year or two planning, we just wanted to ‘be married’” explains Jenny. The sun shone brightly for the big day at the Guildhall in Bath on 23rd November 2013, the day of their 11th year anniversary. Afterwards, the wedding party moved on in style in a 1961 Jaguar to The Royal Crescent Hotel for the reception. Award-winning The Dower House Restaurant

provided a wonderful wedding breakfast in the hotel’s Library that consisted of seven courses, with guests then enjoying an elegant wedding cake that Carl’s mother, a former professional cake maker, had specially crafted for the occasion. The happy bride wore a dress by Pronovias from Brides of Harrogate. “They made me feel very special, and seemed genuinely excited for us all, leaving us beaming on our way out!” For the men, no shop did it like TM Lewin, who provided their suits, shirts and ties, with their shoes came from British designer Paul Smith. Accessories were all about the personal touch for these two, including made to order wedding rings from Gold & Platinum Studio Ltd. “I had a ring designed to fit around my antique engagement ring, and they talked through it with us, and drew sketches to make sure they had the right idea,” explains Jenny. A last minute gift idea from Jenny to Carl was made possible by Justice in Bath, a gold tie clip that matches his ring. Carl’s cufflinks were also made to order by jewellery maker DLK Designs. Photographer James Green was on hand to document the memories of the day. “James made us laugh and put us at ease, which made him a great photographer considering neither of us like having our photos taken,” says Jenny. “The results were stunning, and he managed to capture some special moments I hadn’t even noticed!” However, every beautiful wedding has its mishaps. From lost music to muddy lawns (the bridesmaids’ suede nude heels suffered the most), the day kept everyone laughing. But it was a runaway garter that surprised everyone the most. “I made my garter myself as I couldn’t find one that I particularly liked,” Jenny explains. “However, I must have made it a little too big, as it kept turning up in places it shouldn’t!” If it wasn’t for Jenny’s grandmother finding the garter in the apartment corridor, it would never have made it to the ceremony! Jenny’s favourite moments from the day included Carl’s brother’s hilarious best man’s speech, whilst

Carl appreciated the sensational food and service at the hotel. “It was simple, intimate and beautiful. Keeping it small with immediate family only made it all more special, as all the guests had a role. Everyone looked lovely, and the weather was amazing, so it all came together perfectly!” And with their trip to Switzerland just two months before, the newlyweds spent their honeymoon at The Royal Crescent Hotel with some pampering at Thermae Bath Spa – a truly relaxing ending to a wonderful occasion.

Silver Bridals turns five! Bristol bridal shop Silver Bridals will celebrate a milestone birthday on 30th May this year, marking five years supplying beautiful dresses to West Country brides. Since 2009 this independent retailer has built up an excellent reputation for giving brides-to-be plenty of advice and helping you to choose a dress that looks absolutely perfect. Recognising the modern bride's need for value for money, it stocks a range of dresses which are mostly under ÂŁ1,000, with designers including Victoria Kay Bridal, Hollywood Dreams and Phoenix Gowns. As well as bridal gowns, the shop also stocks bridesmaid dresses, men's formal wear and accessories, so can offer the bridal party a complete service under one roof. To mark the occasion, the shop is asking former brides to get in touch and send them a photo of them on their wedding day, to collate into a special book. If you wore a dress from Silver Bridals and would like to be included, owner Lisa Pugh would love to hear from you! And if you're a bride-to-be looking for your dream dress, you can receive 10% off any order placed in Silver Bridals' birthday week by quoting 'West Weddings'. THE RING

Some prefer to skip the wedding band, while others are happy to slide it on as they say ‘I do’. Gianina Turner explores the issue of grooms and wedding rings.

L

ove stories are eternally entwined with rings, from the proposal with a precious diamond solitaire to the ceremony marking the start of your next chapter as a married couple. Rings are seen as lasting symbols of a lifetime of love and commitment to each other, but while women have always been thrilled to show off their sparkle, it’s a relatively recent addition for men. The balance is becoming more even, however, and buying a ring for the groom is now commonplace for many as part of their wedding preparations. So, paraphrasing Beyoncé, the question as a groom-to-be is should you put a ring on it? Although women sporting rings to mark their marital status has been traced back to ancient Egypt, a wedding ring for the groom only became mainstream in the mid twentieth century, when men fighting in World War II chose to wear them as a reminder of their wives back home. In the 21st century, many grooms wholeheartedly embrace putting a ring on it - after asking grooms-to-be and married men their thoughts, we got a number of overwhelmingly positive responses to wearing one. “I soon got used to wearing a wedding ring and I’m proud that it shows my love and commitment to my beautiful wife,” explains Kevin. “Of course I’ll wear a ring. It’s a symbol of marriage that I can wear every day, something

I can show off. And it’s tradition,” says Ciaran. This idea is also supported by another groom-tobe, Iulian. “Wedding bands stand for the union of our destinies and our endless love, respect and faithfulness to each other. I can’t wait to wear mine in a few months.” Recently there’s even been the rise of the engagement ring for men - or ‘mangagement’ ring. These have been popular in places such as Spain and Scandinavia for a while and now they’re becoming a celebrity favourite too. Jennifer Hudson splashed out on an expensive ring for her fiancé, whilst Michael Buble was spotted wearing a band on his finger well before tying the knot. So those of you with a taste for the latest fashion and an already impressive collection of jewellery now have another opportunity to add to it! If you don’t have the budget to buy a second ring, but fancy the idea of showing you’re now off the market, you could start wearing your wedding ring during your engagement. This also has the added bonus that, if you’re a newcomer to jewellery, by the time the wedding day comes, it shouldn’t feel strange to have something on your finger. Despite the male wedding ring’s ubiquity in the modern world, however, some grooms don’t want to wear one, whether for practical purposes, such as their job prohibiting the wearing of jewellery, or for aesthetic reasons.

This can, unfortunately, lead to some awkward speculation - Prince William made headlines when he admitted he’s not “one for jewellery” and wouldn’t be wearing a wedding ring, with some questioning his fidelity to Kate. But just like every aspect of a wedding and marriage is unique to a couple, then so too is this decision. Our advice would be that if you do want to stay ring-less, just make sure you discuss this with your future wife and be clear as to why you prefer not to wear one. “My decision not to wear a wedding ring is because I don’t like jewellery, simple as that,” explains Steven, a husband of four years. “However, I don’t feel any less married for not wearing one, and certainly don’t think that anyone should feel forced to just because it’s convention. The idea that wearing one means you’re more likely to stay faithful is ridiculous - a removable piece of metal makes no difference to fidelity.” And for whatever reason you decide that this isn’t for you, as a man – or woman when it comes to that – we say that it’s definitely OK to eschew the ring. David Cameron and many of his PM predecessors chose not to wear one either, and that hasn’t impacted on their marriages, while William and Kate seem to be doing just fine. So sorry Beyoncé, but you don’t have to put a ring on it – just like all other elements of your wedding, it’s down to personal taste. . WEST WEDDINGS 45

Boys of

With the warmer weather upon us, Jo Golding checks out the latest seasonal picks in menswear that will make the groom’s day a breeze.

H

opefully a summer wedding will mean the sun shining on you, but while this is great for your mood and for the photographs, it can be problematic for your outfit. Staying cool, both literally and metaphorically, is paramount on your wedding day. So, how best to go about this? Firstly, your suit. Keep well away from wool and heavy materials, and look instead at lightweight fabrics. Anne Harding, the wedding boutique in Bristol, has a special collection of lightweight slim fitting suits which are specially designed for summer weddings. Made out of mohair, these suits not only have a luxurious sheen to them but are also very breathable, so there’s no chance of you overheating whilst enjoying sun on your wedding day. When it comes to style and colour, there’s a wide range to choose from, from the traditional morning tailcoat to lounge suits. For a more informal look, try the mohair Sandford suit in sand, a sophisticated light

brown suit which, when paired with a cream pocket handkerchief, is a great alternative to black. Or, opt for ever-popular grey and choose the Claverley lounge suit, which looks great with a bright tie. If tailcoats are your thing, try putting an aubergine tie with the Hinstock grey mohair tailcoat, the most popular style at Anne Harding. For something slightly more adventurous, the Forton tailcoat in a bold navy is guaranteed to look dashing next to a white wedding dress. For a look that’s right on trend, pair it with a tie and pocket handkerchief in lighter shades of blue. Even more colours were introduced to this collection in April, including a stylish light blue, charcoal and beige in an on-trend slim fit. Now your suit is sorted, think about what’s underneath. The last thing you want as the groom is to let the heat get the better of you, and sweat patches aren’t a look that’s coming into fashion any time soon. Well, it’s good news as this April, after eight years of

46 WEST WEDDINGS

research, sees the release of the SmartWeave men’s shirt collection, a clever piece of fabric technology that puts a stop to sweat patches. SmartWeave shirts are made out of 100% two-fold cotton, ensuring a soft feel on the skin. Whilst usual cotton shirts dry slowly and can result in embarrassing sweat stains, the technology in SmartWeave shirts draws perspiration away from the skin. The SmartWeave layer is made out of 100% cotton and spreads the moisture finely over the surface area away from the outside of the shirt, encouraging it to dry quickly. The SmartWeave layer is single-layered, making

it different from previous attempts to tame the sweat which attempted to combine different layers of material . Though these shirts have a lot going on science wise, they certainly don’t compromise on style. Start by choosing either a slim, tailored or traditional fit in sizes 14” to 23” to ensure the perfect fit. Then, with colours ranging from black, blue, brown, grey, pink, purple and white, plus different patterns such as check and stripe, you’ll have ample choice. There are also different cuff sizes, collar styles and a longer sleeve length to tailor the fit to you. So that’s your suit and shirt done. Now for the fun part – the finishing off. With a summer wedding, there are lots of options to put an individual stamp on your look. Channel the dashing young British gentleman look with a straw Panama or trilby hat, which also is handy if you’re having an outdoor wedding and the sun is particularly strong. Take it a step further and add braces, a pocket handkerchief and a bow tie in either bright, vivid colours or muted pastels for a style that’s sure to get you as much attention as the bride. If you favour a simpler, more timeless look, instead opt for a slim fitting tie in a colour that ties in with your wedding details, such as the flowers or bridesmaid’s dresses. With a lightcoloured suit, ditch the black shoes in favour of something like a chestnut or tan colour. Brogues also suit a summer wedding, so check out Loake’s great range, such as the Strand. And there you have it - effortlessly cool in both ways from top to toe.

medieval Tudor castle that's rich in history and beautiful detail was the perfect place to shoot our summer showcase wedding. Our talented team of local suppliers made a day to remember for models Natasha and Ryan at Thornbury Castle, creating a colourful wedding styled by Kirsten Butler and photographed by Charlie Birchmore.

THE VENUE

Just over ten miles from Bristol in the quaint town of Thornbury sits Thornbury Castle, voted Small Hotel of the Year for 2013. After exploring its 16th century Tudor features, it’s no surprise that it makes a spectacular wedding venue, especially for those with a love of history. We even spotted steps once used to get into a horse and carriage! Whether you want a small or extravagant ceremony, Thornbury Castle caters for all. The Tudor Hall offers the most room for 70 guests whilst The Library’s room for 16 guests is perfect for intimate ceremonies. The magical gardens with ivy covered stone walls make for a beautiful backdrop for the reception, and head chef Mark Veale is on hand to create his locally sourced award-winning food. There are 26 luxurious bedchambers, and the Duke’s Bedchamber always proves popular with newlyweds, as you'll be following in the steps of royalty - previous occupants included Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn! Others climb the 77 stone steps up to The Tower Suite with one of the largest four-poster beds in the UK and its hidden bathroom. “We’re the only Tudor castle open as a hotel so you’re never going to get anywhere like this. You just walk in and fall in love,”says the venue’s wedding coordinator, Jennifer Broad. That was certainly true for everyone on our shoot - it truly was a special venue.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Charlie Birchmore of Your Pictures Wedding Photography has been taking photos since the age of 14, and this 20 year career has seen him accumulate a wealth of experience in interiors, lifestyle, corporate and portraiture photography. Charlie set up Your Pictures so he could bring this experience to wedding day photography and share his passion for capturing the moments with couples on their special day. From getting ready to first dance as husband and wife, Charlie will be on hand to capture it all in his relaxed style, ensuring you have photos that will make you smile long after the day is over. Charlie's main aim in shooting a wedding is for the couple to enjoy their day as much as possible. “I think that’s the key to wedding photography – if you keep the bride and groom happy, you then get great photos.” What was shooting at Thornbury Castle like for Charlie? “It was very easy. Everywhere you looked there was an amazing backdrop - I was really spoilt for choice!”

THE DRESSES & ACCESSORIES

Krystle Herbert-Worgan from Krystle Brides in Bath provided four breathtaking wedding gowns, which were expertly accessorised by Amanda Davis-Harrison from the awardwinning Bridezillas boutique in Keynsham. The first dress was from Ronald Joyce’s 2014

collection. Rosalinda 68017 is a princess gown with full skirt, cap sleeves and a high neckline, which was perfect for the castle setting. An appliqué lace floral design decorates the dress and a crystal beaded belt adds some sparkle. Amanda wanted accessories reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, so she achieved this look with an Ivory & Co tiara with cubic zirconia crystals, tear drop crystal earrings and a marquise cut crystal bracelet. The second dress was Ellis 11404, a 1950s style tea length dress, which features a sweetheart neckline with straps, lace detailing, pearl buttons and a thin belt. Amanda added a pink petticoat by Doris Designs for a quirky look and matching pink Paradox shoes, plus a mini bird cage veil and Abigail Grace Designs 'Laurie' tiara. A rose cuff bracelet decorated her wrist and a pink heart umbrella added even more fun to this cute look. Oozing glamour was Maggie Sottero’s Lark dress from the 2014 collection. Floral appliqués adorn this beaded sheath dress, with further lace appliqués embroidered onto tulle over a Valentina satin slip dress. A grosgrain ribbon belt with Swarovski crystals ties in a bow at the back. Abigail Grace Design's tiara ‘Viviana’ was added to scatter Natasha's hair with diamantes and fresh water pearls, and the ‘True Love’ Ivory & Co pendant completed this very romantic look. This was our bride's personal favourite of all the gorgeous gowns she got to wear on the day! The fourth dress was style 19033 by Ellis Bridals, featuring a high neckline covered by floral lace appliqué. The tulle skirt flows elegantly to the ground and just off centre on the waist is a pretty floral decoration. A ‘Clarice’ headpiece was worn partly across the forehead to add a statement to a simpler dress, along with pearl drop earrings and a bracelet featuring crystals and pearls. Accessories worn by Eden, our little bridesmaid, include a ribbon hair-vine, an Amanda Wyatt children’s tiara and a Young Doris pink petticoat to match the bride.

THE SUITS

Wedding outfit specialist Anne Harding provided two stylish suits for our groom. Stocking wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses and menswear to buy or hire, the menswear department has an excellent range of options. The first suit was a tailored navy blue Milford mohair lounge suit, paired with an ivory Tenby waistcoat and green haze cravat. Later on Ryan wore the same suit, but with a matching navy blue waistcoat and baby pink cravat. Ryan then changed into a fitted Venice mohair lounge suit in beige, with a matching waistcoat and the green haze cravat. This suit was also styled for further photographs with a pink waistcoat and pink cravat. Both of these suits are an ideal look for warmer weather, as their light colouring and mohair fabric will keep you cool all day just what a summer groom needs!

THE HAIR

Talented hair stylist Stacey Jade specialises in bridal hair and is the proud winner of the hair and make-up award at this year’s Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards. For our bride's romantic look, Stacey started by curling the ends of her hair with Corioliss straighteners, before adding a sweeping fringe and a small quiff at the crown which enabled a tiara to sit perfectly. The rest of Natasha's hair was put into a classic ponytail for a vintage updo. For the bride's second look, Stacey went for tousled curls, which were left down for a softer style. For our groom, Stacey swept his hair to the side and then went for a more central, styled back second look. To keep everything in place, she used products from the TIGI Bed Head range, including the Superstar Queen for a

THE MAKE-UP

Our fantastic make-up artist was Jodie HortonStanley from Powder and Pearls. As well as creating stunning make-up looks for brides, she is also the Creative Director at Tracey Barron Boudoir Photography, so is used to making women look their absolute best. Jodie created a classic and neutral look to complement our bride's dark features, using chocolate browns, pinks and berry colours. Natasha's skin was prepped with Elizabeth Arden foundation and MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. Jodie then added Lorac 3D Liquid Lustre to make our bride's eyes truly sparkle! For the finishing touch, Jodie used Estée Lauder Pure Colour Long Lasting Lipstick in Sugar Honey Shimmer for a subtle rosy lip. Jodie’s top product recommendation for the summer is Urban Decay’s Eye Shadow Primer Potion, which she admits keeps her own eyeshadow in place even after Zumba. “It’s a must have for a bride.”

THE FLOWERS

Delicate summer flowers were expertly put together by Tina Bignall from Tiger Lily florists in Bristol. Taking inspiration from the pastel theme, Tina used blooms in lilac and mulberry colours, such as vintage pink Menthe roses. A soft green was added with the inclusion of eucalyptus. Antique gold satin and a lace overlay held with vintage gold pins added a subtle metallic finish. Another bouquet boasted Magical hydrangeas for a gorgeous pink hue. Our bridesmaid carried ranunculus in sage green with a pink tinge,

while similarly-coloured buttonholes were made from helleborus and ranunculus. To add some medieval glamour to the tables, Tina filled candelabra with helleborus, more Magical hydrangeas and Menthe roses, plus eucalyptus foliage, and draped the flowers with pearls for a classic finishing touch.

THE CAKE

Ann Pickard from The Icing Centre in WestonSuper-Mare loves making unique designs, and the cake for our shoot was no exception. This three-tier cake consisted of a fruit cake and two sponge layers, decorated with white and pastel blue icing. The yummy interior was topped with a beautiful white bird cage, complete with icing birds. Ann incorporated artificial flowers to decorate the cake board and rows of pearls, which echoed those in the floral candelabra. Around the top tier was a banner of icing beautifully designed to look like lace, which can be a wonderful way to tie in the details of your dress with your cake.

THE STATIONERY

After helping out our stylist with stationery at a previous shoot, Lizzy from Lizzy May Design and Photography discovered a passion for paper creations and now enjoys creating bespoke wedding stationery for couples, as well as offering photography and other designs services. Lizzy's invitation came in a floral fabric envelope and consisted of four cards riveted together, each with different information, a style which Lizzy is finding very popular. The table numbers were printed onto wine bottles with a ‘love’ motif ribbon wrapped around the neck. She enjoys adding quirkiness to her designs by working with

unusual materials and displaying information in different ways. “I want to give a couple something that is just theirs and that is completely unique.”

THE CAR

A newly restored 1966 Jaguar S-Type in opalescent pale green was provided by AJE Classics. This beautifully-coloured car is now available along with the company's original pale blue Jaguar, two stunning colours against which your dress will really stand out! Although we pictured our groom Ryan behind the wheel, AJE Classics is a chauffeurservice, with co-owner Andrew Ellis driving you on your big day. And as well as excellent chauffeur service from Andrew, his wife Emma Horrex, the other half of AJE Classics, will ensure the build up to your big day is smoothly organised. The company even drives the route in the week prior to your wedding to ensure the roads are problem free. “We get a lot of feedback from past brides saying we can’t do enough, that we’re so helpful, and that’s really the key to our business,” says Emma. Editor Helen would agree – she picked the pale blue Jaguar for her own wedding day!

THE BUNTING

What better way to add a pretty touch to a summer wedding than with bunting? Jane Eveleigh from Beez Neez Bunting Hire started her company six months ago after receiving positive feedback for bunting she made for an event, and she now creates beautiful bespoke and hire bunting. “I really enjoyed making it, as I love being creative and trying something different.” The beautiful outdoor stone shelter at Thornbury Castle was decorated with Ava vintage-inspired bunting, which features a rose pink and sage green floral and stripe

pattern. But even if you're not getting married in the summer or having an outside venue, Jane's bunting looks equally good indoors.

THE HARPIST

A special twist was added to our shoot with harpist Sally Jenkins. Playing at weddings since aged 12, she has a wealth of experience and a repertoire to match. “If it’s music during the drinks reception, I play a little bit of everything. Some pop, classical, jazz, lots of different styles.” Sally can also take requests, to add a special touch to your favourite song. At our shoot, Sally’s delicately delightful sounds filled the gardens as our bride and groom sat romantically in a stone shelter. We were transported back in time to a medieval ball, causing Kirsten to remark that "this is the most atmospheric shoot we’ve done!”

THE STYLIST

Our creative director, Kirsten Butler, styled the shoot with a summery, pastel theme to inspire couples to add some colour and detailing to their big day. When she's not creating gorgeous shoots for West Weddings, she works as award-winning stylist, The Little Wedding Helper, advising couples on how to make their day personal. “I love working with people who want to step outside the box and do it a bit differently.” Her thoughts on the shoot? “It’s just such a beautiful backdrop for a wedding!”

THE MODELS

Casting his professional eye over the shoot was David Hill-Souch from Shoot DHS models, which provided the models for the day. Both Natasha Torres and Ryan Harper are new to the world of bridal shoots - Natasha works in marketing for an IT company and Ryan is

re-entering the industry after being a child model. Both looked amazing as our happy couple and thoroughly enjoyed their first wedding shoot! Our cute bridesmaid Eden was make-up artist Jodie’s daughter and, like most little girls, she loved her chance of being a princess at a castle for the day.

SMALL BUDGET

With the average spend on a wedding soaring, Sophie Smith looks at how to reduce your costs while still having a priceless day.

D

id you know what the average UK wedding costs? I spoke to local brides to find out how much they were spending on their wedding and honeymoon, and can reveal the average spend was nearly £17,000! Seeing an eye-watering number like this is enough to put some couples off getting wed. However, don’t panic just yet! I also spoke with some very money-savvy brides who’d managed to keep wedding costs to as little as £5,000! And here’s how... SET YOUR BUDGET Before you even look at how to save money on different elements of your wedding, it’s crucial that once you get down to planning that you sort out your budget straight away. Decide at the outset what your priorities are and the number of people you need to cater for. Is live entertainment a must? Do you want those perfect portraits to showcase in your home forever? Has that dream dress always been a major part of your wedding plans? Take each wedding element (you can use our budget checklist as a guide) and write them down in priority order; this will help you allocate where to put your pennies. Once you begin purchasing services for your wedding, record all your wedding finances in a spreadsheet. This way you’ll know the running total, what you’ve paid, and what is left to pay. THINK WEEKDAYS Your reception venue will probably be one of your biggest costs, so consider holding your wedding on Monday-Thursday or a Sunday to save money. Venues usually charge a premium for Fridays and Saturdays so check rates for the whole of the week. You’ll be surprised how many couples are bucking the tradition of a

Saturday wedding in favour of a midweek one! CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES FOR YOUR EVENING RECEPTION Reception venues sometimes charge you by the hour, so any savings you can make on hourly hire charges will dramatically slash your bill. Why not have a ceremony, followed by your reception and then just an hour or two for dancing with a two hour playlist you create for an iPod dock? This means a few hours less to pay for venue rental, no DJ to hire and no evening food to provide. If you do decide on having an evening reception, have a dessert bar rather than full on evening food. Drinks and dessert go really well together and will be a snip of the price of a hot buffet. FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD A typical three course wedding breakfast can cost you around £50 a head - even without the addition of a tipple or two for your guests! If you’re having a small number of guests, this might not be a problem. Still, considering you are likely to be providing evening food for guests too, it’s not long before catering costs begin to soar. If you’re not fussed about a typical wedding breakfast, why not consider options such as a hot buffet, BBQ, hog roast or even a delightful afternoon tea! DESIGNER V HIGH STREET The next biggest expense where you can make real savings is your wedding attire. You can find fabulous bridal dresses from Phase Eight,

House of Fraser and Coast which all come in at under £300. A lot of these have a real vintage style and are a lot classier than you expect. Your guests would think they were more boutique than high street! Beautiful flower girl and bridesmaid dresses can be found in Monsoon or BHS, and groomswear can be picked up from big department stores. SAVE ON YOUR FLORIST COSTS Consider whether all your bridal party need a bouquet. A simple single stem such as a peony, lily or sunflower can look great! Alternatively you can get beautiful wrist corsages for your bridal party which are likely to be half the price of a bouquet. THINK ABOUT HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER Wedding planners know how to cut costs whilst still creating a perfect celebration. Whilst they may seem a luxury and an extra expense, they could actually save you money in the long run. Planners sometimes hold exclusive discounts with local suppliers which in total may save you hundreds of pounds! They will also recommend good suppliers who won’t let you down or overcharge you.You may also be able to book pay by the hour packages with a wedding planner - meaning you can get expert advice to save you money in the long run, at just a fraction of the cost you would expect.

Blooming lovely

If you've always dreamed of doing your own wedding flowers, then a new bridal course in Bath could be the ideal way to spend your Saturday. Helen Dorritt finds out more.

T

here are a lot of aspects for a wedding that you can make yourself. The cake, the stationery, the favours – all of these are possible with some forward planning and creativity. But the flowers? Unless you were lucky enough to have a florist in the family, or be one yourself, it used to be that sorting out the floral arrangements for your wedding was a bit tricky. But now, with the arrival of a one day bridal course at the Tallulah Rose Flower School, flowers can be firmly on any West Country DIY bride's list. Aimed at the absolute beginner, this one day course has been designed for brides-tobe who love flowers and, quite simply, want to know more. It caters for all abilities, and is suitable for brides who may need help in choosing their wedding florist right through to those who are looking to create their own floral arrangements on the day itself. The course is run by florist and stylist Amy Cottington, who owns Flowers for Eddie,

a floral design and styling business. Amy decided that she'd like to share her skills and experience with others, and so teamed up with Tallulah Rose to share her skills with brides-to-be. In the school's light flooded classrooms, handily located in Bath's central Milsom Street, bridal expert Amy will offer you bespoke advice on selecting seasonal flowers for your wedding, as well as how to source and condition them. You'll then learn how to create a hand tied bridal bouquet, allowing you plenty of time to practise the technique before producing your very own bouquet. You'll also learn how to ribbon finish it for that professional look. As well as brides who are looking to learn a useful skill from the course, it's also a great option for a hands-on hen do activity. “Taking part is a lovely experience for brides and their bridesmaids, and is a great idea if you're looking for something a little different to do for your hen weekend,” explains Amy. And

being based in the beautiful city of Bath means that once the course is over, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to continuing the fun! “If you're looking for an extended stay, the girls at Team Tallulah are always happy to recommend their favourite places in the city to you!” Amy says. The course is taught in a relaxed and informal environment with plenty of opportunities for you to discuss your own wedding plans and to ask lots of questions. And as it's competitively priced at £150, which includes tuition and all materials (and, of course, all your beautiful creations!), it's a great way to make your floral wedding dreams a reality.

Under pressure? When it comes to engagements, some of us like them long while others keep them short. Rebecca Paddick asks, do couples feel pressured into walking down the aisle as soon as they announce they’re getting hitched?

I

n The Five-Year Engagement, Jason Segal and Emily Blunt delay their nuptials when Blunt gets a job out of town, then a promotion, and insist that they don’t have cold feet. Nonetheless, people all but place bets on whether they’ll ever walk down the aisle. While this is just a film, it seems to be human nature that if a bride and groom haven’t set the date, booked the venue and bought the dress within 24 hours of announcing their engagement, then the wedding is never going to happen. Well, I might be exaggerating a little here, but it certainly feels like couples are under pressure to get everything in order once they become engaged. According to various sources, the average engagement lasts around 13 to 16 months. But of course, everyone is different and while some couples can’t wait to set the wedding wheels in motion, many are stretching out their engagements for years. Some use the time to plan and save, and others just like living in the prenuptial zone. James and Emma Neil were engaged for four years before getting married. “We never felt any urgency to get married as we already felt committed to each other, especially as we already lived together,” says James. “It sounds really silly but we didn’t feel grown up enough to be a husband and wife! After a while of talking about our wedding, though, we had it in our minds that we would get married in 2013. It felt right for us to do it then.” James and Emma found that family and friends were keen to find out more about their big day as soon as they announced their engagement. “People asked us straight away when the weddings would be, but we just made it clear that it would be a long engagement and we had no definite plans,” reports James. “I think be-

cause we were clear about this from the start we didn’t feel pressured, and we wouldn’t have let ourselves be pushed into anything that we didn’t want to do. We both said that we would only do it when we felt ready.”

A NATURAL PROGRESSION

Victoria Gillman is getting married this July, exactly one year after her fiancé Fred Vaughan proposed. The wedding date is of particular significance to the couple as it will be the anniversary of the day they first met, back in 2010. “We didn’t feel any pressure to set the date as we decided to keep to ‘our date,’” said Victoria. “I’m sure some couples feel pressured by family and friends as it is, really, the natural progression to get engaged and then start to plan the wedding, but I think that everyone has to do what is right for them, and if you feel that you want to wait then you shouldn’t let anyone talk you out of it.”

HAPPILY EVER ENGAGED

For some couples, the proposal is enough to seal a lifelong commitment. Frances BrosnanJenkins was engaged to her husband Richard Jenkins for 10 years before they said their vows. “I really liked the idea of just being engaged for a while, as I didn’t just see it as a stepping stone to our wedding,” explains Frances. “I saw it as another step in the relationship and I wanted to enjoy it, and take our time - I didn’t see any point in rushing. Everybody asked us when we would get married and I would just respond with ‘when we’re ready.’ It’s not that we didn’t want to get married, it’s just that we were completely happy the way we were and we didn’t see how marriage could make us any happier.” Frances and Richard finally walked down

the aisle in 2009, in the church opposite their home. “The year we got married felt just right,” says Frances. “We both knew exactly what we wanted, and it was a great day. Still, nothing has changed - except we don’t get asked ‘when’s the big day?’ anymore!”

TAKING THE TIME

By setting the date just a year after becoming engaged, Victoria and Fred didn’t leave themselves a lot of time to plan for their big day. Says Victoria: “It’s been very stressful but I have had a lot of help from friends and family. I was given some very good advice from a friend who got married last year - she said the best weddings have lots of good wine, lots of good music and lots of good food, so I've made sure I’ve ticked all three!” James and Emma set the date and booked the venue in October 2012 for the following March, and started to get things organised straight away. “We thought we had plenty of time but now we know that there is never enough time to plan a wedding,” reports James. “Emma had very definite ideas about the type of wedding she wanted and I was happy to let her take the reins. Emma and her mum made a lot of things themselves and she thought she had left herself loads of time, but still ended up staying awake until the early hours of the morning the week before the wedding finishing off everything.” So it really comes down to the fact that, like everything to do with a wedding, everyone has a different idea for what suits them. But whether you’re engaged for the long haul, or feel that there’s no time like the present, it’s important to never let the pressure from family and friends influence a decision that will affect the rest of your lives together.

What’s shorter than a honeymoon but just as sweet? Hannah Chapman tells us why the mini moon is no joke.

Y

l u f ti

ou’re in the midst of planning your wedding and the reality of the situation hits you; the photographer needs paying, the venue wants to confirm how large the bar tab is, the bridesmaids are eyeing up the most expensive dresses in the shops and somehow you need to find the money for a lavish holiday for two. It’s enough to scare the pre-wedding tan off anyone but don’t worry, we might just have an idea (or three). Introducing the mini moon. A mini moon is not so different from a honeymoon; you still get to spend time alone with your new husband/wife, you still get to treat yourselves, but the key difference is the location. While for some the thought of a honeymoon will evoke the sights and smells of far flung countries with white sand, blue water and a slowly deepening tan, the mini-moon is all about finding somewhere closer to home where you can enjoy being married for a short time before going back to the daily grind. If the thought of doing without the holiday leaves you feeling cheated, you could also plan to take an anniversary trip together to celebrate the first year of being married, instead. In the South West we're blessed with gorgeous landscapes and thriving city environments, so whether it is a weekend by the water or a night on the town catching dinner and a show, we might just have what you’re looking for.

SURF AND SPA DOWN SOUTH

The Vale Resort in South Wales has teamed up with Cressey’s Surf Academy and can offer guests a day hitting the waves, learning the art of surfing before returning to the hotel to luxuriate in Wales’ largest spa and enjoy dinner in the award winning restaurant. Priding itself on an excellent wine list, original cocktails and exciting menu, the hotel also encourages guests to step out and enjoy what more is on offer. On arrival ask to see The Bath Voice, a semi-secret service that highlights the best that Bath has to offer including Champagne hot air balloon flights over the city, or treatments at the award winning Thermae Spa.

It comes complete with a large bed, organic bed linen and feather duvet and pillow, floor cushions and rugs, and fireworks to set off outside. the next chapter Does anything change after you’ve said ‘I do’? Helen Dorritt talks to couples to get the lowdown on married life.

W

later she told me that she got it now. There’s something about signing that register that redefines your relationship in a very special way.” HELEN WEBSTER, WHO MARRIED STEVEN IN OCTOBER 2010.

“Andy and I have been married for 20 years, and I can honestly say that I love him more and more as the years go on. We really are each other’s best friends, which I think is so important, and our life together is absolutely fantastic. It just gets better and better.” EMMANUELLE GINN, WHO MARRIED ANDY IN MAY 1994.

“Our wedding felt so magic that, once the bubble of euphoria burst, we were inevitably faced with some changes! For me, having a new surname was a huge one, as was being addressed as ‘Mrs’, updating my bank details and changing my signature. As we took our first steps into the world of married life, we also realised how many of our priorities were changing. Being newlyweds meant that we could call each other husband and wife, and that we share not only the present, but also a future together.” GIANINA TURNER, WHO MARRIED LOUIS IN MAY 2013.

“Since our wedding day, Steven and I have felt more of a team. We’d been together for seven years and already lived together, but there was a subtle yet definite shift in our relationship as soon as we said our vows. I was asked to go to Australia a week after we got back from our honeymoon, but I turned it down as I felt I couldn’t leave him so soon after making such a statement about us. When I told a friend this, she couldn’t really understand what I meant, but as soon as she got married herself a few years

“Post the wedding, life calmed down a bit and the reality of being husband and wife set in. It was very exciting, but also a little daunting. We had our first baby five months after getting married so we had something else to focus on, meaning we never had a chance to become complacent with each other! Marriage for us has been a massive journey: becoming homeowners, then parents, and our relationship has evolved, too, within that journey. My husband is not just my lover and

hen you’re planning your wedding, it’s very easy to get caught up in the preparations for the big day and not really think about the next stage of your life as a married person. But what happens when the cake has been eaten and your wedding dress has been packed away? Does anything change now you’ve signed that piece of paper? We asked married couples to share their experiences of what came next.

best friend, but father to my children, my present and my future. Time and familiarity may change the initial feelings you have for someone, but for me they changed into something much stronger. You do both have to work at it though!” ZOE LOVELOCK-WRIGHT, WHO MARRIED PATRICK IN NOVEMBER 2010. "Having lived together for a few years before we got married I didn't really expect anything much to change after the wedding day. And really, practically, it hasn't. There is a new sort of calmness in an age of uncertainty, however - we publicly made a promise, in front of our favourite, most-loved people that we'll stay together forever. And the memory of that keeps us strong, makes us a team. We face the world together - as husband and wife. It's intangible, but it's really lovely." RACHEL BARNETT-JONES, WHO MARRIED ANDREW IN DECEMBER 2012. Gianina Turner, one of West Weddings’ regular contributors, has launched an online magazine aimed especially at newlyweds, Whispers from the Heart. A ROSE IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE’S

CROWN

Ellie Pipe discovers the rich history of the majestic Thornbury Castle.

T

he royal vows might be somewhat old news by now, but the dream of a fairy tale wedding such as William and Kate’s is everlasting. If you’ve always fancied being royalty for the day, then the timeless, romantic charm of Thornbury Castle makes it your ideal venue. The epitome of a medieval English castle, Thornbury has hosted royalty dating back as far as Henry VIII. If the historic walls could talk, they could definitely tell you a thing or two! As a wedding venue, the magnificent medieval architecture, pretty walled garden and surrounding unspoilt Cotswolds country setting promise to make it a magical occasion of effortless grandeur. The venue is licensed, so you can get married in the library, the lounge, the summer house or the Tudor Hall, depending on the number of your guests. Once the vows are declared and the Champagne is flowing, take advantage of your exclusive use of the castle to get those dream wedding photos, exploring all of its gorgeous features. For those of you eagerly anticipating the wedding breakfast, you’re in luck head chef Mark Veale leads a talented

team in the kitchens and will create a meal fit for Henry VIII himself. The menu is a very British affair, fitting for a castle, and is created using locally sourced produce with a variety of vegetables and herbs selected from Thornbury’s own kitchen garden. You can also toast your marriage in style with a tipple from the 500-year old castle vineyard, perfect for the wine connoisseurs (or enthusiastic amateurs) among you. With each bedchamber in the castle offering a very distinctive and opulent experience, you could be quite forgiven for sneaking off from the party early! The grand Duke’s Bedchamber, located in the hexagonal tower, features an impressive four-poster bed, freestanding tub and an open fire. This is where Henry and Anne Boleyn once slept - although perhaps theirs is one marriage you won’t wish to emulate! You could also opt to stay in the Duke’s Robe Chamber, an equally luxurious affair with the added intrigue of a secret bathroom. The real royal treatment comes in the form of in-room pampering treatments that can be arranged for before or after your wedding to help soothe away any pre-wedding tension.

THE POST Helen Dorritt finds a winning venue at Somerset’s Wincanton Racecourse.

T

here aren’t many people who can boast that they’ve said their vows on a professional racecourse, but the fact that Wincanton Racecourse in Somerset has a marriage licence means that, for those of you who love your horses and the thrill of the turf, this could be the venue for you. Set in gorgeous countryside,Wincanton Racecourse is just over 30 miles from Bristol and is easily accessible forall your guests, and its recent refurbishment means you’ll be celebrating your day in unrivalled facilities. As you arrive at the racecourse it’s the views that are sure to get your attention, with all the lush greenery of this beautiful part of the West Country in full display. You can say your vows overlooking the finishing line, before moving onto one of the three reception rooms to start your celebrations. Each of the reception rooms can cater for up to 200 guests, and have their own bar and stunning views across the course and surrounding countryside. Even better, the venue can usually offer you access to your reception room the night before your wedding, so you can decorate it in a style that suits your theme. While your guests enjoy a welcome drink, you can take advantage of the

racecourse’s rural surroundings and get some great photos on the course. With the finishing post and the parade ring at your disposal, there are no end to the fun pictures to be had! When it comes to the wedding breakfast, the racecourse’s talented in-house team of chefs are on hand to serve you a delicious range of food, from canapes such as Somerset brie and fig relish to a three course meal – dishes on offer include terrine of salmon with black pepper mayonnaise, herb crusted loin of cod and lemon-infused treacle tart. If you prefer a buffet style meal, choose from either hot or cold dishes including lamb tagine, daube of beef with button onions, a fresh fish platter and sunblush tomato and goats cheese tart. WOODLAND

WONDER It’s not often that you find a wedding venue that’s tranquil, yet also in a city, but as Helen Dorritt discovers, that’s why Arnos Vale is so unique.

O

ne of Bristol’s best kept secrets, Arnos Vale is a beautiful site located close to the centre of Bristol. It’s a registered charity and a slice of living history, as well as being home to two gorgeous Grade II* listed chapels and 45 acres of woodland, full of British wildlife. Recently licensed for civil ceremonies and Church of England wedding ceremonies, Arnos Vale offers a variety of options when it comes to weddings. If you’d like a traditional church wedding in a picture-perfect chapel, the Anglican Grade II* listed chapel, with its wide ornate steps leading up into large double doors with stone, tiled and wooden flooring, is absolutely perfect. For a ceremony it’s intimate and compact if you only have a few guests attending, but also big enough to cope for larger ceremonies - seating is available for up to 90 guests and a further 30 standing. The chapel is also licensed for music and entertainment and, after a quick change around, this gorgeous building can be transformed into your formal seated reception for up to 80 guests. It doesn’t stop there, however, as the venue can host up to 140 guests for your evening celebrations. If you’re having a civil ceremony or

partnership, consider the elegant and imposing Grade II* listed Spielman Centre, which boasts grand steps up to the portico and elegant pillars that lead you through large double doors into a lofty but simple interior. The neutral interior and natural lighting floods in from the large leaded windows to guarantee an ambience your guests won’t forget. Also fully licenced, this venue can be changed around into a formal seated reception that will seat up to 70 guests. Later in the evening it’s perfect for parties and celebrations with a live band or DJ for up to 140 guests, with exclusive use of the Glass Atrium and outside pavilion. Relaxed and informal ceremonies out of doors are becoming more popular, so the venue’s latest venture may well be of interest. The Underwood Centre is Arnos Vale’s new outdoor venue and is equipped with wooden benches, a fire pit for toasting marshmallows (or hands on chilly evenings!), twinkling fairy lights in the rafters and the sound of birdsong in the background. It is, in fact, the perfect backdrop for couples wanting a touch of rustic romance for their ceremony! And your use of the Underwood Centre doesn’t have to stop at the ceremony – this venue is also licenced for music, so you could stay a little longer and hold your evening

celebrations here too. Arnos Vale’s onsite catering company is the highly acclaimed Whisk! Not only can you mix and match the venues at Arnos Vale to suit your own style and celebrations, but Whisk! will work with you to come up with the perfect menu, whether that’s a formal seated reception fit for the beautiful interior spaces of this pretty site, or a rustic feast in the woodlands to accompany your out of doors celebrations. So, good food and beautiful spaces? Just like you, it sounds like a match made in heaven!

Last Word

Is all white Yes

I remember watching Four Weddings and a Funeral with my mum, and her being horrified when she saw Andie MacDowell wearing a white suit to the first wedding. For her, that was the height of gaucheness, a social faux pas that couldn’t be accepted. But even at the age of 12, I really couldn’t see what the problem was. What’s wrong with wearing a similar colour to the bride? White is a great base colour for a lot of dresses and actually pretty hard to avoid when looking for a dress to wear to a wedding, especially one in the summer. It’s not as if I’m going to select a floor length gown with a train, or accessorise it with a veil and tiara, so actually, even if I do choose a white dress, it’s going to look nothing like the bride’s. And when I have worn a white dress to a wedding, it’s been with colourful shoes, hat and a wrap, so it’s the brighter hues that you focus on, rather than the white of the dress itself. I do appreciate the etiquette behind it, but if you’re not careful you can take it too far. I mean, am I going to be pilloried if I turn up wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids? If I’ve been invited to a wedding, there’s a pretty good chance I’m a good mate or relative of the bride, and the last thing I’d want to do is upset her on her special day. Yes, people may say that if you wear white, you’re upstaging the bride. But seriously, short of turning up naked, nothing can upstage the bride on her wedding day.

ALL RIGHT?

Would you ever wear white to another person’s wedding? Louise Jarndyce is in favour, but Rebecca Paddick is horrified by the idea.

No

I would never wear white to someone else’s wedding as I was once told I would be ‘taking the attention away from the bride’, which is something I very much agree with. Although the guests are really important to a wedding, it’s the bride and groom’s day and it should be all about them. Guests can wear any other colour, so why would we want to look similar to the bride? I’ve seen more and more guests turn up to weddings in white, cream and ivory outfits in recent years, and although I think it is now slightly more acceptable, I still wouldn’t dream of wearing any of these shades to a friend’s wedding. I’d feel pretty upset if one of my friends was seemingly

trying to upstage me on my big day, and I would be horrified to be thought of in the same light. It’s true that not all brides wear white. Some don’t like the virginal connotations, while others just don’t think it’s the most flattering colour, but that still shouldn’t give you the idea that it’s OK to turn up in a white dress. What’s next, a veil and bouquet? Unless it has been specifically requested by the couple that guests wear white, or there is a special theme (Beyonce and Jay Z requested that all their guests wore white to their 2008 wedding, and Kim Kardashian’s bridesmaids all wore white gowns at her ceremony to Kris Humphries) I think I’ll err on the side of caution and opt for a nice floral number.
