Tying the Knot As summer (hopefully) approaches, many of you might be invited to a friend or family member’s wedding or getting ready to tie the knot yourself, so we decided to dedicate a large chunk of this edition to Westies & Weddings! It seems to be becoming more and more popular to have your Bestie involved in the Big Day and it’s totally understandable why we’d want our beloved canines with us at such an important life event, but it’s vital that the correct steps are taken to ensure your Westie is as stress-free and relaxed as possible.

et owners are being asked to back a campaign calling on local authorities across Britain to create public toilets for dogs in parks and other popular locations.

Pet experts at Years.com are calling for public toilets for dogs to be set up across the country to reduce the number of dog fouling cases.
Now experts are calling for similar facilities to be opened across the UK to spare the blushes of caught short canines and their owners.
The move comes after a unique doggie public toilet was unveiled in Dublin after the city council there decided to tackle the problem. The Public Doggie Toilet complete with its own pee post located in the north inner city, is

be left carrying the bag with them all the way home. “But if the doggie public toilets are introduced in more spaces, it allows for dogs to have a clean space to go to the toilet and owners can pick up free bags to hopefully reduce the amount of waste left on the streets. “If they aren’t introduced into more areas of the UK, we fear this issue is only going to spiral and make public pathways and parks unpleasant for all Brits, not just dog owners,” he said.

ry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is a common condition that affects dogs. It occurs when the tear glands do not produce enough tears to lubricate the eyes. Here are some symptoms and solutions for dry eye in dogs:

1. Red, inflamed, or irritated eyes 2. Thick, yellow, or green discharge from the eyes 3. Squinting or rubbing of the eyes 4. Cloudy or hazy appearance of the eyes 5. Sensitivity to light 6. Pawing at the eyes or face
Solutions: 1. Eye drops or ointment The primary treatment for dry eye in dogs is to use eye drops or ointment to keep the eyes lubricated. These drops or ointment can be prescribed by a veterinarian and may need to be administered multiple times per day.
2. Anti-inflammatory medication Inflammation can worsen the symptoms of dry eye. Your veterinarian may recommend anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
According to the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, “Dry Eye is usually treated with a combination of topical lubricants and tear stimulants drugs – cyclosporine, tacrolimus. These treatments are ongoing for the life of the dog. Certain complications – like secondary corneal ulcers or recurrent infections – may require antibiotic treatment”. www. rvc.ac.uk

In addition to prescription eye drops, you can use over-thecounter artificial tears to help keep your dog’s eyes lubricated.
4. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements Omega-3 fatty acids can help improve tear production and reduce inflammation. Your veterinarian may recommend a supplement to be added to your dog’s diet.
5. Surgery In severe cases of dry eye, surgery may be necessary to correct the problem. One option is a parotid duct transposition, which involves rerouting a salivary gland duct to the eye to provide moisture. If you notice any symptoms of dry eye in your dog, it is important to take them to a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment. Untreated dry eye can lead to serious complications, including corneal ulcers and even vision loss. With proper treatment and management, most dogs with dry eye can live comfortable lives.

Take the Sting Out of the Hot Summer Months Be prepared for the upcoming season By Bernadette Roberts
I
f your Westie is stung by a bee or wasp, the first thing one should do is remove the stinger if it is still present in the skin. Use a pair of tweezers or the edge of a credit card to gently scrape the stinger out, being careful not to squeeze it, as this can inject more venom into your Westie’s skin. Next, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the affected area to help reduce swelling and pain. You could also give your dog an over-the-counter antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to help relieve symptoms. However, it is important to check with your veterinarian first to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your dog as some ingredients in various brands could be fatal. Your Westie could be stressed so try to keep him calm and cool.
If your dog is showing signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse, seek immediate veterinary attention. Allergic reactions can be lifethreatening and require prompt treatment. In general, it is important to monitor your dog closely after a bee or wasp sting and seek veterinary attention if symptoms persist or worsen. Prevention is also key, so keep your dog away from areas where bees and wasps are active and consider using insect repellents specifically designed for dogs.

Consider your dog’s temperament and personality when deciding whether to include them in your wedding. “Not all dogs are well-suited to loud, crowded events like weddings,” cautions Dr Emma. “If your dog is anxious or easily overwhelmed, it may be best to leave them at home.

Have a plan in place for managing your dog’s behaviour during the wedding. “Dogs can become overwhelmed by crowds and noise, so it’s important to have a strategy for managing their behaviour. Consider enlisting the help of a professional dog trainer or handler to assist with managing your dog during the wedding. They can also provide guidance on how to manage your dog’s behaviour before the big day.” 26

Make sure your dog is properly leash-trained and cratetrained before the wedding. “A well-trained dog is less likely to cause disruptions or become a distraction during the wedding. Make sure your dog is comfortable on a leash and is crate-trained if you plan to crate them during the event.”

Consider your dog’s dietary needs and schedule when planning your wedding. “Make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water and that they are fed at their usual times,” recommends Dr Emma. “Bringing along some of their favourite treats can also help keep them calm and happy.”

Have a plan in place for potty breaks. “Make sure your dog has a designated potty area throughout the event. You can consider designating a responsible family member or friend to take your dog outside for potty breaks as needed.”

Check with your wedding venue to see if they have any specific rules or regulations regarding dogs. “Some venues require that dogs be kept on a leash at all times, for example, or may not allow dogs in certain areas of the property. Make sure you’re aware of the rules and regulations so that you can plan accordingly.”

Keep a close eye on your dog when children are around. “Even the most well-behaved dog can become overwhelmed or anxious in these situations, leading to them accidentally knocking over or jumping on a child. In addition to keeping a close eye on them, educating any children attending on how to interact with dogs safely is important. This includes teaching them not to approach a dog showing signs of stress or anxiety, to ask permission before petting them, and to avoid approaching them while eating or drinking.”

Dont’s 1 Don’t force your dog to participate or interact with guests if they seem unhappy or uncomfortable. “Remember that not all dogs enjoy being the centre of attention, and not all guests may be comfortable around dogs. If your dog seems hesitant or uninterested in interacting with guests, don’t force them to do so. Instead, provide them with a quiet and comfortable area to rest. Equally, if your dog seems unhappy or uncomfortable, it may be best to let them sit this one out.
2 Don’t forget to dress them for success. “If you plan on dressing your dog up for the wedding, make sure the outfit is comfortable and properly fitted. Avoid any accessories that may be choking hazards or restrict their breathing or movement. Booking a grooming session ahead of the big day so your dog looks and feels their best will also prevent any muddy paw mishaps.”

3 Don’t forget to bring plenty of poo bags and cleaning supplies to clean up after your dog during the wedding. “Accidents can happen, so it’s important to be prepared. Bringing along extra waste bags and cleaning supplies can help ensure that your dog doesn’t cause any disruptions or mess.”
4 Don’t forget to designate a quiet area for your dog to rest during the wedding. “Weddings can be overwhelming for dogs, especially those unfamiliar with large crowds or noisy environments. Make sure to designate a cool and quiet area for your dog to rest, away from the hustle and bustle of the event, particularly on hot days.”
5 Don’t forget to communicate with your wedding planner and venue about your dog’s presence. “Make sure to inform your wedding planner, venue and guests about your dog’s presence and any special accommodations they may need. This can help ensure that everyone is on the same page and that your dog is included in the wedding festivities safely and comfortably.”

Jessica Barber Even if your dog tends to breeze through new situations with confidence, it is worth considering the unique sounds, sights, and experiences they’ll encounter on your wedding day. Preparation before the day can go a long way to increase the likelihood of them enjoying the day just as much as you – examples include taking them to the venue in the weeks approaching the big day to allow them to familiarise themselves with the location (consider the floor – your polished dance floor might be a slippery nightmare for your dog!), taking them to busy places to experience being among crowds and/or gradually desensitising them to sounds of loud applause and music. The last thing you want is Fido freaking out during the speeches! Bringing plenty for your dog to do can also be helpful. While the speeches might keep your guests amused, your dog is unlikely to be quite so interested! A stuffed Kong, Licki-mat, snuffle mat or long-lasting natural chew (that your dog likes!) can help keep them occupied during key parts of the day. Familiar items such as your dog’s bed or blanket and a few favourite toys may help them feel more relaxed and at ease, so consider bringing these along. Remember that your dog doesn’t have to be at your wedding for the entire day – it is worth considering arranging someone to bring and/or collect your dog after they’ve attended some of your special event. Having a back-up plan in place is very sensible in case your dog begins to show signs of stress. Someone to collect and take your dog somewhere to chill out and relax if they aren’t coping at your big day will keep your options open, take the pressure off and ensure your pooch doesn’t need to continue feeling uncomfortable if it all proves too much for them.
