stablished almost 70 years ago, the Carroll County Chamber serves as a catalyst for economic vitality in the community. As the county’s largest business organization, the Chamber enables member companies to promote their products and services, build professional relationships, expand their networks, develop their teams and sharpen their skills toward the goal of growth, both personal and professional. uilding a comprehensive heart care program has been a vision at Tanner Health System for decades – and that vision is a reality with the launch of open-heart surgery at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton. Following on the success of its interventional cardiology and critical care services, open-heart surgery serves as the next step in advancing heart care in the region and giving people a closer, more convenient option than traveling to Atlanta or Birmingham. The expansion of services required Tanner to build out new operating suites at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton designed for the procedure, as

well as recruiting cardiothoracic surgeons and other specialized medical professionals to its medical staff. “Open-heart surgery is a hallmark of a major medical center,” said Benjamin Camp, MD, executive vice president, chief medical officer and chief quality officer at Tanner. “Rather than leaving our region for care, open-heart surgery is a reason people are coming to west Georgia.” Tanner launched interventional cardiology – featuring angioplasty and stenting – at its Carrollton hospital in 2006. The health system expanded the service to Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica in 2015. Both hospitals serve as accredited chest pain centers. “Our community has a higher rate of cardiovascular disease than the rest of the nation,” said Shazib Khawaja, MD, a board-certified interventional cardiologist with Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists, chief of interventional cardiology and chair of heart and vascular services at Tanner. “We’re addressing that with programs to prevent chronic disease, encourage more physical activity and healthier diets. But that doesn’t immediately reverse a trend that has been growing for decades. “That’s why we must make sure that the most effective treatments are available close to home, especially when time is so critical in relation to outcomes.” Christopher Arant, MD, also a board-certified interventional cardiologist with Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists and a member of Tanner’s board, said open-heart surgery gives doctors more options for treatment, along with providing local families to be more engaged with their loved ones at the hospital pre- and post-surgery. “This is not a service that’s been easy or convenient for people who live in our region,” Dr. Arant said. “Open-heart surgery can give people a new lease on life, but until now, having the

procedure has been a huge hardship. Hospitals that offer it are far away in densely populated areas, and it requires a seven-to10-day hospital stay after the surgery for recovery. That makes it difficult for families to visit their loved ones in the hospital and be engaged with their care. Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center Expansion

new day for people facing cancer is coming to Carrollton with the expansion of Tanner’s Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center. Located on Clinic Avenue in Carrollton, the nearly 16,000-square-foot cancer center is undergoing a massive expansion to become a premier 21,000-square-foot destination for care. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2024. “Our cancer program is one of our greatest achievements as a community,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner. “The team there has always provided compassionate, uncompromising care, and our leadership has been dedicated to making sure they have the resources and technology they need to give patients the same level of care that they’d have in a more urban setting. “With this expansion, more cancer patients will enjoy a better experience throughout their cancer journeys.” The center, which originally opened in July 1989, is named for Roy Richards, Sr. – founder of Southwire and the first chair of Tanner’s board. Tanner’s cancer services have grown through the years to offer a continuum of care – featuring minimally invasive surgical care, leading-edge chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment, a tumor board of cancer specialists to discuss individual cases and versatile radiation therapy that aims to destroy cancer cells with minimal impact to healthy tissue.

The center is continuing to provide state-ofthe-art radiation therapy treatments during the expansion, which has included razing and rebuilding the facility’s facade into a two-story structure, renovating the back of the building for office space and patient waiting areas, and installing a new TrueBeam linear accelerator. “We’re going to offer a facility that’s as impressive as the care we provide inside it,” said Anil Dhople, MD, a board-certified radiation oncologist with Tanner Radiation Oncology and the medical director and oncology quality advisor with Tanner Cancer Care. As the 22nd largest school system in Georgia, Carroll County School System educates nearly 16,000 students countywide. With its 23 schools and two College and Career Academy sites, the district organizes the schools in clusters where one to four elementary schools in the cluster feed into one to two middle schools, which feed into one high school per cluster. The five high schools are Bowdon, Central, Mount Zion, Temple and Villa Rica. The cluster approach helps serve the needs of the individual communities while supporting Carroll County School System’s mission of preparing students to be employed, enrolled, enlisted and engaged citizens when they graduate. With a 2022/2023 graduation rate of 94% countywide, this marked the fifth year the county graduation rate topped 90%. The student/teacher ratio averages 16:1. Curriculum at every grade level helps get students thinking about their future. About 80% of the schools in the district are certified by the National Institute for STEM Education. The district focuses on integrating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) into hands-on, real world experiences to prepare students to excel after graduation. Knowing not every career path requires college experience, the district offers extensive Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs, both at the local schools and the two College and Career Academies. This type of career education begins at the elementary school level. In the 2021/2022 school year, nearly 4,000 students took CTAE courses, and 90% off all high school students were enrolled in a CTAE class. The career pathways include JROTC, culinary arts, law and public safety, information technology, healthcare science, graphic design, automotive and engineering. At the elementary level, students have opportunities to join various clubs and organizations to help them foster their interests. In 2023, four of the five Carroll County high schools were named Advanced Placement Honor Schools by State School Superintendent Richard Woods and the Georgia Department of Education. The district provides several opportunities for

students to earn advance credits or equivalent college credits through programs such as dual enrollment, joint enrollment and alignment/ articulation. Students also have the opportunity to earn work-based learning credits as they gain valuable career experience during high school. If you need proof, look no further than one of the most successful programs of its kind – 12 for Life® – which has served as a case study for MBA candidates at the prestigious Harvard Business School over the past decade. Established in 2007 through a partnership with Carroll County Schools, the award-winning educational module provides at-risk high school students with the opportunity to excel in an unconventional learning climate, combining traditional classroom instruction during the day with a job inside a modified Southwire manufacturing environment. When the program started just over 15 years ago, the high school graduation rate for Carroll County Schools was 64%. Through the partnership and functionality between the administration and educators at Carroll County Schools and adult employees at Southwire, that graduation rate has shot up to 91.35% as a district, including all five high schools in the Carroll County system boasting a graduation rate of 90% or better. Needless to say, it holds a special place in the heart of many families across Carroll County, and especially 12 for Life Principal Joel Grubbs. Having served as an educator at Central High School in Carroll County, Grubbs started tutoring the graduation tests in 2008 and joined the 12 for Life support staff in 2015 before taking over as principal in 2018 in what he deemed to be a no-brainer decision. Grubbs quickly began to understand that the

majority of students who struggled in the traditional classroom setting didn’t lack intelligence, they simply surged to thrive in a different learning environment – and 12 for Life proved to be their calling. “Once I started tutoring, I saw what the program was doing, and I quickly realized that this is where I wanted to be,” Grubbs said. “I really have a heart for 12 For Life.” Grubbs, one of eight Carroll County Schools educators in the program, works directly with the

five high school counselors in the county system with the addition of Carrollton, Bremen, Haralson and Heard County high schools to identify potential candidates for 12 for Life. Since its inception, the program has expanded to include students from Carrollton and Bremen City Schools, along with the Heard and Haralson County school systems. Southwire also has a 12 for Life facility in Florence, Ala., in partnership with the local school systems. Of the 134 students enrolled in 12 for Life during the 2022-23 school year, 31 seniors earned their high school diplomas in the spring of 2023 – and 19 of them accepted positions as full-time Southwire employees upon graduation. “All of the 12 for Life students who have graduated from here and worked in the facilities that I’ve been a site leader for, they’re some of your top producers,” noted 12 for Life Plant Manager Derrick Autrey. “They stay on task. Their productivity is some of the highest you see across the team members. That’s because of what’s done here and what’s built and molded through the process of them working here.” Autrey, who has worked at Southwire for 20 years and served as a site leader at four different plants,

stressed that one of the major missions of 12 for Life is maintaining a focus on the No. 1 priority – earning a high school degree – and not evolving into any type of work-based learning program. For example, if a student is not taking care of what he or she is supposed to be doing in the classroom, they can be pulled off the production floor and into one of the facility’s designated study halls until they catch up on their school work. Only then can they come back on the production floor. Autrey and Grubbs maintain daily contact upon connecting school to work and work to school for the 12 for Life students. Part of that learning experience also deals with how behavior impacts your ability to land a job – and keep a job once you graduate high school. If a student skips school or is under suspension, they are not allowed to work that day. All 12 for Life students must also pass a drug screening. “You want to get a job, here’s the reality. Then the interview process, the safety, it’s what a regular adult would go through. But this is the first job that many of these students have had,” Grubbs said. “Once they figure out that, ‘Hey, I want to be successful at my job, I’ve got to be successful at school and other things.’ Then it starts to sink in.” Some of the other realities include learning about taxes coming out of your paycheck or how to interact with a supervisor on the floor if there is a conflict. The senior students also participate in resume-building and interviewing skills so they’re prepared to begin applying for their next step after graduation – whether that is furthering their education, joining the workforce or military. Autrey, who played college football at Jacksonville State University, said he sees a lot of himself in many of the 12 for Life students, which makes coming to work all the more meaningful day-in and day-out. “We can all think about a time in our life where we thought, ‘Hey, I’m about to give up on this. What’s

going to help me break through this monotony of what I’m doing right now?’ That’s what this program is about,” Autrey said. “This program gives them something that has purpose.” And just like he did, the seniors who go through the program, graduate and accept jobs at Southwire celebrate with a Southwire Signing Day – donning jerseys, balloons and all the amenities. “We make a big thing out of it. They sit down and sign a letter of intent to work, and mom and dad can come over and take pictures,” Autrey said. “It’s making them feel like they’re making a transition into something special. Fuqua Development invests in Carroll County

he area around Mirror Lake in Villa Rica is undergoing an incredible transformation. The leaders in City of Villa Rica felt there needed to be a way to connect Mirror Lake Boulevard to the growing downtown area, and they started plans for the Mirror Lake Connector, making downtown access from the east side of Villa Rica easier and more convenient. The improvements don’t stop there. A 56-acre site on Punkintown Road, directly across from the Mirror Lake community, is becoming a premier mixed-use development. Fuqua Development, the mastermind behind the Battery Atlanta at Truist Park, is planning a $140-million mixed-use development on the site. It’s slated to be anchored by a 60,000-squarefoot major grocery store, 208 apartments and 255 townhomes, in addition to retail and restaurant space. The development offers new housing options in Carroll County to meet that increasing need while helping support the growing industrial-use companies moving into the area. The Mirror Lake Connector will have a walking path and a golf cart path along the road, and there are plans to build another connecting road to the Tanner Medical Center’s Villa Rica campus. The City continues to plan for road improvements to support a retail and entertainment corridor connecting thriving downtown Villa Rica and the Mirror Lake area.

Fifth-generation protein supplier secures second home in Carrollton

iniat Foods, a fifth-generation protein supplier with more than 120 years of history as a national industry leader, summoned the services of Carrollton when it came time to secure a second home. Upon building additional partnerships in the South, the need for a second plant to complement Miniat’s headquarters in South Holland, Illinois – a Chicago suburb – became a priority for the company, which is on the cusp of eclipsing a major milestone as a billion-dollar annual entity. “We serve, largely, the nation’s leading retail quick-serve and chain grocers,” noted Larry Earle, vice president of manufacturing operations for Miniat Foods. “We don’t have any labels. We’re not a private-label company. We are a co-pack partner for the nation’s leading food providers.” Earle, a University of Georgia graduate with more than 30 years of experience in the food manufacturing industry, joined the Miniat team in 2019 to lead the startup for the Carrollton plant. Although the transition and opening was temporarily delayed due to the COVID pandemic in 2020, Earle said Carrollton has proven to be an ideal location and community for the expansion – driven by a need from some of Miniat’s suppliers, namely Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inspire Brands and Panera Bread. With speed-to-market making a facility in the South the motivating factor for expansion, Carrollton just happened to deliver the right opportunity at the right time. “Miniat was actually looking to do a build in the Carolinas, and this plant became available and came with an existing work force and a very supporting community,” Earle said. “So just that opportunity to step into an existing, capable plant with an existing and capable workforce and a community that was open to embrace and partner with, it really just made it a no-brainer.”

And now, more than three-and-a-half years in, Miniat Foods is proud to call Carrollton, and Carroll County, part of its family. “Everything has turned out to be exactly what we thought they were in the very, very beginning,” Earle said. “This plant became profitable super fast and we have a great number of employees who were here Day 1 who are still here today. Miniat is a family owned, family operated company that embraces family and community. It’s unique in that they embrace family and the culture of family. We have employees here, including one who has four members of her family working here, and that’s truly who we are at our core – a family company.” As of August 2023, Miniat Foods was in the midst of a third expansion to its Carrollton plant. The $14M project is expected to add 10 million pounds of capacity to the current facility, and Earle said there are already plans for another phase of expansion in the next few years as Miniat continues to offer premier service to its partners and their brands. The uptick in space and offerings will add job opportunities for even more Carroll County residents. Miniat had roughly 160 employees as of 2023, and Earle expected that number to hit 200 following the latest expansion and rise to 250 by 2025. Fulfilling the Miniat motto of, "Driven to Serve," Earle said it’s been an honor to join the Carrollton community and bring jobs to the hard-working citizens of Carroll County. “That’s a broad motto, and it’s not just a service to our customers, but a service to our employees and a service to our communities,” Earle said. “We’re people and community-centric. It’s a fantastic company to work with. I am truly blessed to be with Miniat and be in Carrollton and be serving in a capacity that helps us impact the community.”

Carrollton Police Department The Carrollton Police Department has been a state-certified agency since 1999 and is proud to be established as one of the top agencies in all of Georgia. Out of 628 law enforcement agencies in Georgia, CPD is one of only 137 to hold state certification. The CPD is under the leadership of Chief Joel Richards, who has been with the department since September of 1992. Carrollton Police answered an estimated 65,000 calls from July 2021 through June 2022. The department provides 24-hours-a-day police coverage, using four patrol shifts who work 12 hours. There are two day shifts that include seven officers each and two night shifts that include nine officers each. In addition to patrol shifts, the department staffs four school resource officers for Carrollton City Schools, five officers in the Traffic Unit and three officers to the Community Oriented Policing Services Unit (COPS). The COPS Unit officers focus on areas like the GreenBelt and shopping centers, while also engaging with the homeless community and community members who may have special needs. There are three officers, one of whom is a paramedic, assigned to the Mental Health Mobile Crisis Unit. The Criminal Investigation Division includes 15 detectives: four are assigned to the ACE Unit, four to cybercrime investigations, three to domestic violence and four to general investigations. ACE investigates local drug and gang activity and

is a joint venture with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the University of West Georgia Police Department. In addition to local investigations, the cybercrime detectives assist other law enforcement agencies with crimes involving digital evidence and crimes occurring across the internet. The domestic violence detectives focus on crimes in violation of the Family Violence Act of Georgia that often include crimes against children. These detectives assist victims in navigating the court system and connect victims with needed resources. The department has two full-time crime scene investigators, one of whom is a latent print examiner, and a full-time property and evidence officer. The department recently acquired a grant for equipment and training to enter its own evidence into the NIBIN (National Integrated Ballistic Information Network) database. This expedites information and investigative leads involving shell casing evidence.

Carrollton Fire Department In 2016, the City of Carrollton obtained a class 1 rating for its fire suppression delivery from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), Inc. This rating plays an important role in the underwriting process and pricing structure used by insurance companies. There are few departments in the state of Georgia able to achieve and maintain an ISO class 1 rating. This rating is earned by fewer than one-fourth of 1% of fire departments nationwide and saves residents money in insurance costs. To prepare its firefighters for everything they might encounter, the Carrollton Fire Department requires new employees to obtain Firefighter II certification and be medically trained and certified in the state of Georgia. Many of the employees are hazardous material technicians, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics and hold a wide range of advanced certifications in areas such as high-angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, structural fire control, search and rescue, and fire apparatus operator, to name a few. The department, which has 67 fully-paid firefighters, operates from four stations, strategically located to optimize response times to emergencies. In the past five years, the Carrollton Fire Department has welcomed two new fire stations, with Station 23 most recently opening in April of 2023. In 2022, the department responded to 6,232 calls for service.

Carrollton Water Treatment Plant As one of the state’s premier plants, the Carrollton Water Treatment Plant has been awarded the Georgia Association of Water Professionals’ Platinum Award for the past 14 years. Some of accolades for the plant include the GAWWA/GAWP District 3 Drinking Water Taste Test Winner in 2009, 2017, 2018 and 2020; the GAWWA Best Tasting Tap Water in Georgia in 2017; the GAWWA People’s Choice winner in 2018; the GAWP Laboratory Quality Assurance-Gold in 2021; and GAWP Laboratory Quality Assurance-Silver in 2020.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Due to the diversity in the duties placed upon the Office of the Sheriff, which differ from that of a police department, a wide variety of resources and personnel must be utilized. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has two primary divisions – Law Enforcement and Jail – with each being subdivided into different operational divisions and units. The Law Enforcement Division is primarily responsible for patrol, investigations, court services, traffic enforcement and other units. The Law Enforcement Division has 103 personnel. In accordance with the State Constitution and Laws, the Sheriff is also the chief jailer of the County and is required to operate and maintain the jail. As of mid-July 2023, there were 430 inmates housed in the jail, however this number changes daily due to the number of arrests made throughout the County. The jail division has 83 personnel assigned. There are also a small number of clerical, maintenance and information technology personnel to bring the total number of positions within the Sheriff’s Office to 195. Terry Langley serves as the Sheriff of Carroll County. A graduate of Bowdon High School in Carroll County, Langley

began his career in public safety as a radio operator with the Bowdon Police Department in 1980. In 1981, he became a Sheriff’s officer with the CCSO 100 Wagon Yard Plaza and was later Carrollton, GA 30117 promoted to Sergeant. Carroll County Fire Rescue Carroll County Fire Rescue, under the leadership of Chief Chuck Barnwell, consists of three key components – Fire Operations, Fire Marshal and the Fire Rescue Maintenance Division. Fire Operations, directed by Deputy Chief Dave Wade, is composed of the highly trained and certified firefighters who respond to calls, being prepared for everything from fighting fires, treating patients, rescuing victims, conducting fire safety surveys, maintaining fire hydrants and much more. The Fire Marshal’s office is in charge of enforcement of all laws, rules and regulations regarding the cause and origin of fires and fire investigations, as well

as enforcing the rules and regulations for the State Minimum Fire Safety Standards, adopted by the State Fire Commissioner. Nic Turner serves as Carroll County’s Fire Marshal. The Fire Rescue Maintenance Division is responsible for maintaining the entire fleet of fire apparatus equipment, including support vehicles. The division is highly trained and certified by Sutphen, the fire apparatus manufacturer for all of Carroll County's fire truck pumpers and aerial ladder trucks. Carroll County currently operates out of 15 fire stations across the county, in addition to its headquarters on Old Newnan Road in Carrollton. In 2022, Carroll County Fire Rescue responded to 507 fires, 6,674 EMS/rescue incidents, 282 calls for hazardous conditions, 2,773 non-emergency calls and 388 false alarms. It also conducted 142 business inspections and 1,417 business pre-plan inspections, along with working 142 special duty events totaling 312 hours.

The UWG Police Department provides traditional law enforcement services, security and emergency response to the university community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Its jurisdiction includes all property owned or leased by the university, plus 500 yards. The UWG Police Department is organized into Administrative, Uniform, Criminal Investigative and Communication divisions. Each division performs separate and distinct activities, which are interrelated. Supervisors of each of the four components answer directly to the chief of police.

McIntosh Reserve, a 527-acre park on the sweeping frontage of the Chattahoochee River in Whitesburg, is a local hot spot for hikers and equestrian riders. The park features four pavilions that can be used for wedding receptions, company picnics and family reunions, along with scenic camping areas along the Chattahoochee. In addition to the hiking and equestrian trails, McIntosh also offers a splash and spray park on the historic land. The park is named after Chief William McIntosh, Jr., a Creek Indian leader who was executed by his own people after signing a treaty to sell the remaining Creek land in Georgia to the United States. Through investments made by the Carroll County Extension Master Gardeners and Native Plant Society, Buffalo Creek is home to the largest pleasure garden in all of Carroll County. You can also visit the Bolds Springs Schoolhouse, which was originally built in 1892 between Temple and Bowdon Junction. The Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park, located on the south side of Carrollton, pays homage to military veterans who currently reside in Carroll County, are originally from Carroll County or have connections to the Carroll County community. The original construction of the park consisted of 24 Walls of Honor containing 1,152 individual plaques, showing name, rank and service record. This was completely filled by 2016, and the park has since added 12 more walls and 576 additional plaques to the original work. All branches of the U.S. Military are represented on the Emblem Wall, while there is also a Women’s Veterans Wall to bring attention to the contribution of women in all wars since the American Revolutionary War. Two new additions were made in 2018 – the KIA Walls, which honors the 332 killed in action from Carroll County in all wars since the American Revolutionary War, and a “Missing Man Table” remembering all who have yet to be found or returned. The park also serves as home to the Carroll County Public Safety Memorial that honors the sacrifices of those killed in the line of duty within Carroll County’s public safety community. Carrollton Kiwanis Club Founded in 1947, the Carrollton Kiwanis Club has been serving Carroll County for more than 75 years. The Club has always maintained a focus on the youth in the county as well as the care of needy families during the holiday season. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Since its inception, the Carrollton Kiwanis Club has donated thousands of dollars and volunteer hours to the community. They host sponsored projects in an effort to return proceeds back to efforts that help children live, develop and grow in a safe and nurturing community. The Carrollton Kiwanis Club meets every Friday at noon at the Z6 Dining Hall, Hubbard Dining Room at the University of West Georgia. You do not need to be a member to attend. In addition to club business, the meetings typically include a speaker to share information with the group. Past speakers include Coach Vince Dooley; former NFL stars Tommy Nobis and Richard Todd; newscaster Monica Kaufman Pierson; and various elected officials from the local, state and federal levels. Carrollton Golden K Kiwanis Club Since 1994, the Golden K Kiwanis Club has been serving Carroll County. With more than 40 members, the Club actively focuses on improving the lives of youth in the community. Each year for the last 28 years, they hold a Kiwanis pancake breakfast fundraiser, which has been Saturdays in February. They typically feed up to 4,000 people who come out to support the Club’s mission. The Golden K Kiwanis Club uses the proceeds to award scholarships to local school seniors. The Club is also active in pre-K reading programs, and they sponsor several area youth clubs such as Builders Clubs, Key Clubs and Circle K. They meet every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at the InZone building at 202 City Hall Avenue in Carrollton. You do not need to be a member to attend. On the third Wednesday of every month, the Club treats members to the Mustard Seed Cafe in Carrollton for breakfast. Rotary Club of Carrollton Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant

social causes to change lives in communities. Made up of over 34,000 Rotary clubs around the world, Rotary International forms a global network of business, professional and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve communities locally and around the world – and form strong, lasting friendships in the process. Their motto, Service Above Self, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. Chartered in 1939, the Rotary Club of Carrollton focuses on making a positive impact in the community. From small roadside cleanups to donations that make lasting differences in the community, the Club continually works to put “Service Above Self.” In fiscal year 2023, the club donated $22,500 to local nonprofits such as the Carroll County Child Advocacy Center, Carrollton Police K-9 Unit, The Blake House, Impact West Georgia, Giving Hearts Choice Pantry, FERST Readers, Friends of the Library, PASS, Carroll County CASA, Recovery Spot of West Georgia, Hook'd on the Blue, and scholarships for West Georgia Technical College and the University of West Georgia. Carrollton Dawnbreakers Rotary Club The Rotary Club of Carrollton sponsored the formation of the Carrollton Dawnbreakers Rotary Club, which was officially chartered on Feb. 21,1997. The club meets every Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton. The meetings serve as a forum for networking with community leaders, staying informed on local and Rotary events, and enjoying a different speaker each week. Many of the charter members are former members of the Carrollton Rotary Club, a noon club, who found an early morning meeting time more attractive. From around 25 initial members, the club now has around 75 members, about half of which are charter members. Carrollton Dawnbreakers Rotary Club members take the motto “Service Above Self” seriously, using their diverse backgrounds in industry and business to give back to the community. Service projects include road cleanup, food drives, children’s book drives and scholarship/GED voucher funds, and they help support organizations such as Carroll County Mental Health Advocates, Fraternal Order of Police and Keep Carroll Beautiful. Carroll County Sertoma Club SERTOMA, a service organization dedicated to SERvice TO MAnkind, was founded in 1912. Historically, the organization has focused on speech and hearing health problems, particularly in children, but has since adopted programs targeting druguse education and projects promoting freedom and democracy to school-aged children. Local Sertoma clubs also sponsor and support teen and collegiate clubs in area schools. The Carroll County Sertoma Club supports the community through donations and service projects. For example, in the summer, they sponsor a free Fantasy Baseball Camp for children with hearing

impairments, children with other communication deficits, and their siblings from ages 8-14 years. The Carroll County Sertoma Club offers opportunities for networking, philanthropy and continuing education through speakers at their meetings. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at noon at the Z-6 Dining Hall on the UWG campus. Guests are welcome to attend the meetings. Carrollton Civic Woman's Club Founded in 1968, The GFWC Carrollton Civic Woman's Club is affiliated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Georgia General Federation of Women's Clubs. They pride themselves on an active membership of dedicated, caring, energetic women. In 2022, they worked on 161 projects and over 28,000 volunteer hours. Club members are encouraged to select a “program of work” to match their interests. The programs include arts and culture, civic engagement and outreach, education and libraries, environment, health and wellness. The club meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Venue on Cedar in Carrollton, although meetings in November in December fall a week early due to the holidays. Carrollton Lions Club Originally established in 1933, the Carrollton Lions Club recently celebrated nine decades of service to the local community. The Club follows the Lions International motto of “We Serve,” with a focus on eradicating blindness throughout the world by conducting local vision screenings, raising awareness and providing medical equipment and medications for eye conditions. The Club also supports community projects such as food programs, scholarships, youth activities and recreation projects. One of the Club’s largest projects was building the Lions Safari Park playground in Carrollton, which is designed with physically and visually impaired children in mind. The Carrollton Lions Club was named State of Georgia Volunteer of the Year in the organization category as recognition for the park development. They’ve also helped provide leader dogs for local residents who are severely vision impaired. The Club meets every Thursday at noon at the Courtyard by Marriott at 180 Barnes Avenue in Carrollton, where they plan fundraisers and giving opportunities, discuss Club business, network and hear from local speakers. The museum strives to preserve the art and craft of quilting through archiving and conversation, as informative exhibits change quarterly. Roop is considered the founder of Roopville, credited for building several stores, a mill, blacksmith shop and homes he would sell to new people coming into the area. He was a charter member of Roopville Baptist Church and served on the Carroll County Board of Education. Restoration on the Roop House began in 2005 and remains preserved by the Roopville Archives and Historical Society, Town of Roopville and members of the community. A cornerstone for concerts and cultural arts, Copeland Hall has been a hallmark of good times for the friendly folks of Bowdon and beyond for more than 20 years. The 500-seat auditorium has served as a special event venue since construction was completed in 2002. The construction was made possible by a gift left to the City of Bowdon from Willard Copeland upon his passing, specifically for the purpose of an auditorium. Copeland Hall features an auditorium on one end and gymnasium on the other with a foyer and concession stand in between. The gymnasium is used by the Bowdon Recreation Department. On the entertainment end, the Hall has incredible acoustics and is utilized for community and local school events, concerts and plays. Copeland Hall is available for rental purposes as well. arroll County has a rich tradition as an agricultural powerhouse, tracked all the way back to the county’s roots. When gold was discovered near current-day Villa Rica in 1830, the population started to grow until Carroll County became the 7th largest county in the state – and most of those residents were farmers. By 1860, the new railroad through Carroll County opened doors for more commercial-style agriculture, only to be put on hold by the Civil War. Although many farms fell into disrepair during and after the war, agribusiness in the county recovered quickly, and Carroll County was one of the largest cottonproducing counties in the state by 1900. This did not go unnoticed nationally. In 1907, Carroll County received Georgia’s first Extension agent – it was only the second county agent hired in the country. By 1954, 3,155 farms found homes in the county. The agribusiness tradition continues today, with nearly 900 working farms spread over nearly 90,000 acres in the county, based on the 2017 Census report. These farms include livestock, such as poultry and cows (with the largest cattlemen’s association in the state), as well as crops such as vegetables, hay and sod. Agriculture, forestry, parks, recreation and conservation lands comprise 69.2% of the acreage in unincorporated Carroll County, according to the 2018 Carroll County Comprehensive Plan.

These farms generate an annual farm gate value of $240 million – farm gate value typically means the price the product is sold at by the farm. In Carroll County, agriculture output is over $538 million and creates over 4,000 jobs. That’s no surprise considering 56% of the soil in the county is considered prime agricultural soil. Schools in the county believe in the importance of educating the next generation of farmers, to keep the tradition moving forward. Central High School, for example, offers several pathways including Horticulture, Animal Production, Forest Science and Agriculture Mechanics. West Georgia Technical College, with locations in Carroll and surrounding counties, recently met with the agriculture community to determine how to meet growing

agriculture education needs. “I feel certain that given the landscape of agriculture in West Georgia, we should be at the table helping to train and produce workers,” WGTC Vice President of Academic Affairs Kristen Buoy said. “We want to support all industries and workforce needs in our area, including agriculture.” In the University of Georgia’s Georgia Farm Gate Value Report from 2019, Carroll County is noted as a top-10 producer by volume in the state for: • • • • • • •

Part of the turfgrass success that propelled the county into the top 10 came from the hard work of NG Turf founder and CEO Aaron McWhorter. The business now has approximately 3,000 acres of production across six farm locations in Georgia and Alabama, including his first location in Whitesburg. It has also expanded into another company – Sports Turf Company – created in December 1991 to meet the needs of the growing athletic field construction business. NG Turf and Sports Turf Company combined have close to 200 employees, many of whom are certified turf professionals. Sports Turf is now an ESOP company owned by the employees. Still a family-run company, McWhorter’s son Mark McWhorter, daughters Merett Alexander and Natalie Howard, son-in-law Jutt Howard and granddaughter Addie McWhorter all actively work in the business. McWhorter appreciates he can help support families and the local economy, but having close to 200 employees is a huge responsibility for a business owner. Balancing careers, family and farm life a labor of love for Allison and David Key

ome on the farm is Allison and David Key’s happy place. Despite having their own careers – Allison is a local family physician who owns an award-winning private healthcare practice, while David is a civil engineer by trade – bringing Key Farms to life is something both felt a calling toward upon getting married in 2006. Living on the family farm where David grew up on the east side of Bowdon, the couple bought their first eight head of cattle shortly after tying the knot, and the adventure started from there. “Through the years, we talked about the economics of farming and how you want a farm to be sustainable. You want it to be a generational thing,” recalled Dr. Key, who founded 3:16 Healthcare in 2017, which has grown into multiple practices in Carrollton and Bremen. “You want it to be something your kids, your grandkids, your greatgrandkids someday do.” And thus, Key Farms officially became a reality,

where business has been booming ever since, as its herd has grown to more than 250 head of cattle on the property. The Keys opened a storefront on Maple Street in Carrollton in February 2022 – Key Farms Meat & Mercantile – offering home-grown, delicious beef cuts, along with an array of other local products such as honey, jelly, jerky, spices, grilling utensils and Key Farms branded apparel, to name just a few. One of the additions coming to the storefront includes a fresh market, where you can come in and get fresh cuts of locally raised beef. Although the company’s offerings may have expanded through the years, the vision remains the same. They want to ensure that meat from Key Farms is not only delicious, but nutritious. That means no chemicals are used on the pastures, and they’ve remained adamant to the commitment of

The cattle are free-range, grass-fed before receiving a high-quality, non-GMO grain prior to being processed. “We’ve gotten really into regenerative agriculture. We’re trying to raise them as naturally as you can raise an animal. And obviously, humanely, too. Our kids are involved. They’re safe animals and treated humanely,” Dr. Key said. Following a great deal of research, the Keys found a new, state-of-the-art facility that was USDA certified and approved in Forsyth, Ga., to process their meat. “It’s flash-frozen there, which means it’s such a cold freeze and so fast that it preserves all the nutrients versus putting it in your traditional freezer,” Dr. Key said. “It’s vacuum-sealed, so it’s good for two years and all those nutrients are preserved just like you cut it fresh off the cow.” Carroll County has a rich history in agriculture, something the Keys aim to preserve in today’s everchanging climate of losing rural areas to outside investors buying up land. Dr. Key noted how the COVID pandemic really made her family re-evaluate what it wanted to do long-term, and every conversation came back to farming. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that the beef industry is one of the largest industries in Carroll County,” Dr. Key said. “Healthcare, obviously, is also important. We have Southwire. helpful to me as a working mom. There will be times where you are juggling all the balls at work, but you might drop one at home. Then there’s going to be other times when you juggle all the balls at home, but you drop something at work. It’s just the give and take of life,” Dr. Key said. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of prioritizing what means most to you. Obviously, both Allison and David Key take pride in their work and the way they’re raising their children. Now, it’s all about this next chapter of their lives by doing even more on the farm as a family. In the spring of 2023, Key Farms harvested its first strawberry patch consisting of 13,000 plants. “We invited people to come out for U-Pick strawberries. We brought the strawberries up to the store, too, on days we didn’t have U-Pick. We’re planning to double the size of that for next year,” Dr. Key said. “In the fall, we have pumpkins, and the plan is to kind of have something year-round out at the farm for people to come and do, from flowerpicking and vegetables and fruits and pumpkins. If I could talk David into it, Christmas trees and Christmas lights. That’s where he’s drawn the line so far, but we’ll see.” And that’s what the Keys foresee in their future –

Temple native Russell Floyd parlays passion into profession as president of Z1 Motorsports

hobby that started out of a barn on a chicken farm in rural Carroll County has grown into a global, multi-million dollar operation – all through the grind and gleaming eye of a Z gearhead. Russell Floyd recalls first falling in love with the Nissan 300ZX around the age of 13. Of course, he quickly realized it wouldn’t be easy or affordable to buy a new sports car, but that didn’t stop the Temple native from working hard and saving his money. And by the time Floyd graduated from Temple High School on his path to earning an engineering degree at Georgia Tech, he had saved enough to buy one – albeit a totaled-out 300ZX. But through that initial purchase, some parts and a pipe dream, the wheels for the road to Z1 Motorsports becoming a reality were put into motion.

Ultimately, Floyd opted to give up his day job and parlayed his passion into a profession as founder and president/CEO of Z1 Motorsports. A world leader in parts selection, service and performance for the Nissan 300ZX, 350Z, 370Z – as well as the Infiniti 35 and 37, and, most recently, the Nissan Offroad Truck – Z1 Motorsports has emerged as the “one-stop shop” for Z enthusiasts, a customer base that is almost entirely driven by online sales and in-house marketing. “We’re the specialty-specific products for these vehicles that you can’t find anywhere else, but you can get them all in one place here, and you can get them in a few days if you live in the U.S.,” Floyd said. “It’s not really a local market, it’s more concentrated on where the cars are in the country, or even in the world, for that matter.” Z1 Motorsports has come a long way since Floyd

found his calling with the wrecked 300ZX back in 2000. Upon discovering a “cult-like following” of Z fanatics as online technology and group chats became commonplace through the Internet, Floyd earned a reputation as the go-to guy for Z parts and even helped with the assembly of those parts for his blossoming base of customers. While remaining dedicated to his studies at Georgia Tech, Floyd found himself coming home every weekend, buying more wrecked Zs and hustling up a good bit of cash in the process. The real ultimatum of whether to take the career leap of faith or keep his love a hobby came after graduation and moving into the business sector. “I found myself every night after work and every weekend working on the cars and talking to people online and selling parts and getting interested in performance and making the cars go faster,” Floyd said. “I started sketching out some ways that I thought I could come up with some parts to really make the cars perform better.” As orders continued to pile up, Floyd had to hire help – including friends he grew up with who are still part of the Z1 team today – boxing up parts and shipping them out of the Temple workshop.

“Eventually, I just found myself doing that all day. So I was able to hire some more people and started working on more cars and got more into the performance side and started developing some parts. I thought, ‘Wow, if I start developing these performance parts, rather than used parts, I can mass produce these and have a big market for them,’” Floyd said. Needless to say, things are rolling right along in that regard. Now housed in a 50,000-square-foot facility on Hwy. 61 between Carrollton and Villa Rica, business is booming for Z1 Motorsports. While in the process of an estimated $70 million in sales in 2023 with up to 250,000 orders out of its headquarters, it marked a continued upward trend from $60 million in 2022 after hitting the $20 million mark in 2018. Along with a 2,000-square-foot showroom featuring a fleet of Z1 Motorsports vehicles used for product testing, product development and marketing, Z1 headquarters also boasts an eightbay shop, in-ground Dynojet, customer lounge and offices for housing sales representatives, parts managers and corporate personnel. There is also designated space for used parts storage and a distribution center, although the demand for product has Floyd seeking additional warehouse space in the Carrollton area and an expansion of the on-site distribution center in 2024. Among the 105 employees on the payroll, they consist of a sales team, product experts, ecommerce team, customer service, marketing team, mechanical engineers and technicians – the majority of whom are all Z enthusiasts. “We started picking up customers to come work for us who had different skill sets because we had so many customers that did so many different things for a living,” Floyd said. “So we recruited from a
