Leeuwarden is een stad die je niet in één dag gezien hebt. De stad barst namelijk van de interessante culturele locaties. Poseer bijvoorbeeld even voor onze scheve toren, de Oldehove. Als je alle 183 treden beklimt, heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de stad. En of je nou kijkt op gevels, daken, bruggen en spiegels: overal in Leeuwarden vind je straatgedichten, tekeningen en stadswoorden. Het maakt niet uit of je wacht tot de brug opengaat of ‘toevallig’ even omhoog kijkt: Leeuwarden is één groot kunstwerk.

Leeuwarden was in 2018 Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. En door heel de stad zie je nog kenmerken terug van die periode. Daarnaast hebben we zes musea: het Fries Museum, Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Natuurmuseum Fryslân, ‘t Andere Museum, Huis Van Eysinga en het Fries Landbouwmuseum. Kom langs en laat je verrassen door al het moois dat in de verschillende collecties te vinden is. Leeuwarden is a city you can’t see in one day. In fact, the city is bursting with interesting cultural sites. For example, pose for a moment in front of our leaning tower, the Oldehove. If you climb all 183 steps, you’ll have a wonderful view of the city. And whether you look on facades, roofs, bridges and mirrors: everywhere in Leeuwarden you will find street poems, drawings and city words. It doesn’t matter if you wait for the bridge to open or “accidentally” look up: Leeuwarden is one big work of art.

Leeuwarden was Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018. And throughout the city you can still see features from that period. We also have six museums: the Fries Museum, Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Natuurmuseum Fryslân, ‘t Andere Museum, Huis Van Eysinga and the Fries Landbouwmuseum. Come along and be surprised by all the beauty found in the various collections.

The Fries Museum is a dynamic museum in the heart of the vibrant city of Leeuwarden. Step inside the modern building and get inspired by your favourite stories or works of art. Here you’ll find for instance the sword of Grutte Pier and art by the world-famous Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Get to know Friesland even better: from a room in the unique Hindelooper style to prominent design and masters like Rembrandt.

Het Fries Museum is een dynamisch museum in het hart van de bruisende stad Leeuwarden. Stap binnen in het moderne gebouw en laat je inspireren door je favoriete verhalen of kunstwerk. Zo vind je hier bijvoorbeeld het zwaard van Grutte Pier en kunst van Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Laat je onderdompelen in Friesland: van de unieke Hindelooper stijlkamer tot toonaangevend design en meesters als Rembrandt.

In the heart of Leeuwarden’s historic city centre you find the 18th century town palace of Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel, Princess of Orange Nassau. The Princessehof is also the birthplace of M.C. Escher. Get to know the famous residents, delight in fascinating exhibitions, have a browse at the gift shop, or sample one of the special teas in the museum garden. The Princessehof is truly a feast for the eyes.

Midden in de binnenstad van Leeuwarden staat het 18de-eeuwse stadspaleis van Maria Louise van Hessen-Kassel, prinses van Oranje Nassau. Ook is het Princessehof het geboortehuis van M.C. Escher. Maak kennis met de beroemde bewoners, geniet van de tentoonstellingen, neem een kijkje in de cadeauwinkel of geniet van de meest bijzondere thee in de museumtuin; in het Princessehof kijk je je ogen uit.

An attraction in a museum? It’s true; Natuurmuseum Fryslân offers something unique: the UnderWaterSafari (accesible for 4 years and up). A special vehicle will take you on a journey through the underwater world of the Netherlands. And there’s a lot more to enjoy in this kids-proof museum for the entire family: from a tiny woodlouse to the 14 meter sperm whale skeleton - and everything inbetween!

Een attractie ín een museum? Ja, echt waar: het Natuurmuseum Fryslân heeft iets unieks: De OnderWaterSafari (toegankelijk voor 4+). In een speciaal voertuig maak je een reis door de onderwaterwereld van Nederland. Daarnaast is er nog veel meer te beleven in dit Kidsproof museum voor het hele gezin: van een kleine pissebed tot het veertien meter lange skelet van een potvis en alles daartussen in!

At “The Other Museum”, you will find a rich assortment of collections and stories. The museum has six main exhibitions: a collection of more than 30 vintage cars; a collection of design radios; two LGB model railways; a presentation of freemasonry; an exhibition of lace and bobbin lace items, and an 18th century period room dedicated to Maria Louise. Come and enjoy the ‘Het Andere Museum’!

In ‘Het Andere Museum’ vind je een rijke verscheidenheid aan verzamelingen en verhalen. Het museum heeft zes hoofdverzamelingen: een verzameling van meer dan dertig oldtimers, een collectie designradio’s, twee modelspoorbanen van L.G.B., een tentoonstelling over vrijmetselarij, een tentoonstelling met kant- en kantklosattributen en de achttiende-eeuwse stijlkamer gewijd aan Maria Louise. Kom eens langs in ‘t Andere Museum en laat u verrassen.

Enter the Frisian nobility in this impressive mansion. Admire beautifully decorated rooms, original stucco and carvings, ornate ceilings, landscape-painted wallpaper and marble floors. Walk through the secret corridor to the kitchen. Experience the house like the family! Look in lockers, play a game at the gaming table, cut your silhouette portrait, try the wig and have a cup of tea in the Great Hall. Come visit and feel at home!

Kom binnen bij de Friese adel in dit imposante herenhuis. Bewonder prachtige stijlkamers, origineel stuc- en houtsnijwerk, versierde plafonds, behang met landschappen en marmeren vloeren. Wandel door de geheime gang naar de keuken. Beleef het huis zoals de familie! Kijk in alle kastjes, speel een spelletje aan de speeltafel, knip een silhouet-portret, probeer de pruik, en drink thee in de muziekzaal. Kom langs en voel je thuis!

The story behind the food on your plate? You’ll discover it at the Frisian Agricultural Museum. The museum is located in a national monumental farm. A visit to this museum is a journey through two thousand years of agricultural history. Recent addition is the collection from the National Veeteelt (cattle) Museum and the heritage of the ‘Us Mem’ (our mother) foundation, which has been part of the museum since 2021.

Het verhaal achter het eten dat er op je bord ligt? Dat beleef je in het Fries Landbouwmuseum. Het museum is gevestigd in een Rijksmonumentale boerderij. Een bezoek is een reis door tweeduizend jaar geschiedenis van de landbouw. Nieuw is de collectie van het Nationaal Veeteelt Museum en het erfgoed van stichting ‘Us Mem’ dat per 2021 eigendom is van het museum.
