World Lacrosse Fest

TOWSON - The 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship, delayed a full year due to the global pandemic, commenced last Wednesday at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University. The World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship is the major international championship for women’s lacrosse and features the top female lacrosse players in the world, representing at least 30 countries.

Nearly 600 athletes representing 30 nations are expected to compete in 117 games over the 11 scheduled days, culminating with the gold medal game on Saturday, July 9 at 12 noon.

The World Festival will run alongside the World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship at Goucher College and will feature youth, high school and adult women’s teams. The first international championship was held in Nottingham, England in 1982 and the United States defeated Australia 10-7 in overtime to claim the first of its eight world championships. Six countries — Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, United States and Wales — competed in that inaugural championship under the auspices of the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations. This is just the third time that it has been held in the United States.

So what exactly is the game lacrosse? (French: “the crosier”) competitive sport, modern version of the North American Indian game of baggataway, in which two teams of players use long-handled, racketlike implements (crosses) to catch, carry, or throw a ball down the field or into the opponents’ goal.
