Shop local this holiday season From Washington Women’s Business Co-op

I

n an age where you can get almost anything you want over the internet, it is nice to know that there are somethings that you can only get in person. The smile and conversation you have with a local shopkeeper cannot be found in the cloud. See for yourself this holiday season, and shop local! Washington has gone through a growth spurt over the last few years, and more and more entrepreneurs have opened shops and restaurants. There has been a feeling of optimism and excitement for all the good things that this growth has brought to our little town. Economic upturns help everyone by providing jobs, increases in sales tax revenue and more events for locals and visitors. Washington now has a vibrant shopping and dining district that we want to share with everyone this Christmas. Much of downtown Washington’s growth can be attributed to women business owners and family ownership. More than 75% of downtown businesses are owned or managed by women. In late 2018, a group of women business owners decided to band their resources together and create a co-op to share advertising, support each other and promote downtown events. While called the Washington Women’s Business Co-op, don’t let the name fool you — it is an inclusive group that also includes male business owners. Under the umbrella of the nonprofit Washington Harbor District Alliance, all of the WWBC members had a dream of what they wanted their business to be but realized there was strength in numbers. In 2018, WWBC created the Jingle Mingle. This year’s Jingle Mingle is Dec. 5, featuring late-night shopping and entertainment for families. Shops and restaurants are open until 8 p.m. offering food, drink and sales. There also will be a drawing for a gift basket worth more than $500. Donations will be accepted at participating businesses for Ocracoke Island Christmas, a fundraiser to bring Christmas joy to the children of Ocracoke after the devastation of Hurricane Dorian earlier this year. In 2020, WWBC will be sponsoring other late shopping and dining events beginning in February with a Valentine Open House; April 9 is Spring Fling, a late-night shopping event, June 18 is Summer Solstice Shopping; and the 2020 Jingle Mingle. Washington is a great town, and WWBC wants the community to know what a treasure our historic downtown is by encouraging everyone to shop, dine and play downtown this holiday season!

6 reasons to use cash to pay for holiday purchases

C

ash has fallen out of favor among consumers who find it easier to reach for a card in their wallets. Some shoppers may even wonder if people still carry cash when credit cards and debit cards have become so convenient and widely accepted? Actually, they do. According to a recent study by LendEDU, 32% of 875 people surveyed preferred to use cash over cards for everyday purchases. Cash can be a smart choice for many purchases, including holiday spending. Here are six reasons why cash can be king once more. 1. Limits spending in a tangible way: A key benefit of using cash is that it presents a visual cue that spending should cease. If a shopper has set a $200 limit for holiday gifts, when that $200 in cash is gone, it’s a surefire reminder that it is time to step away from the register and leave the store. It can be hard to view spending in real time when using credit or debit. 2. Bills are accepted everywhere. Unlike some credit cards, merchants will not turn away cash. This is especially helpful when shopping at small businesses or pop-up markets that are popular during the holidays. Local artisans or other niche vendors may only take cash as well. 3. Prevent second-guess impulse buys: Parting with hard-earned cash directly can be a great motivator to keep that $20 in your pocket instead of using it for a scratch-off lotto ticket or mall food court snack. Watching cash supplies dwindle may prevent shoppers from making

unwise purchases. 4. Cash facilitates tipping. Cash is often best for tipping servers and delivery personnel. According to Kim Palmer, a credit card guru at NerdWallet, a popular financial advice site, recipients of tips prefer cash because they get it immediately. A tip on a card may only be parceled out at the end of the week. 5. Losing cash doesn’t affect credit. Although many people say carrying cash is riskier than sticking to credit, the financial expert Dave

Ramsey says differently. While parting with lost cash can be a blow, the risk of identity theft, and sorting through canceling credit and debit cards when they go missing, can be an even bigger threat. 6. Cash may score deals. Paying in cash can be a great bargaining chip at retailers who may offer discounts or waive fees for cash purchases. There’s something to be said about paying in cash, especially during the holidays when sticking to budgets can be challenging.

Great gifts for hunters

M

illions of people across the globe have a passion for hunting. When the time comes to find gifts for the avid hunters in your life, indulging their passion for the great outdoors can make for the perfect present. Hunters come in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life. When shopping for gifts for hunters, it can be advantageous, particularly for consumers who don’t hunt, to think of the ages and experience levels of their loved ones and then go from there. YOUNG AND/OR INEXPERIENCED HUNTERS Many areas have minimum age requirements for hunters, and nearly every region requires hunters to take courses on hunting safety before they can apply for hunting licenses. Financing such educations can be an ideal gift for young hunters, ensuring they will have a strong foundation in firearm safety and other important aspects of hunting before they come of age and go on their first hunting trip. A two-way radio makes another great gift for young hunters, especially who don’t yet have their own phones. Even those that who have phones may find it more fun to speak with their fellow hunters over their special radios than on the phones they use every day. Gear, which can include everything from attire to knives to compound bows and more, also can make for a great gift for young hunters or those just learning the ropes. However, consumers buying for youngsters who aren’t

their own children should first consult the child’s parents to determine their readiness

your own passion for hunting. Some additional gifts that can be great for

for certain gear.

established hunters include a rifle case; ammo cans; a bore guide, which hunters use to clean their rifles; camping gear; headlamps; and other items hunters routinely use that could be in need of an upgrade. Of course, one of the best reasons to choose a hunting-related gift for the family outdoorsman is it might compel them to share their bounty when they return home from a successful trip. A cookbook that offers tips on butchering in addition to recipes can make for the perfect gift and one that the whole family will ultimately enjoy at the dinner table.

ESTABLISHED HUNTERS Established hunters who have strong passions for the sport may already have everything they need. And even those that don’t may prefer certain manufacturers. It can be difficult to learn of such preferences without speaking directly to a loved one, which can spoil the surprise. In such instances, consider gifting a hunting experience. Finance a trip to a hunting ground a loved one wants to visit but never has. Go along for the trip and you might just develop
