he Teach For Malaysia ( TFM) fellows in the southern region had organised their bi-annual conference which was rebranded to Connect-ED 2019. The Connect-ED 2019 encompassed three parts which includes CELEBRATE, COLLECTIVE, and COMMIT. The first part was the opening and introduction of TFM and its mission. Student performances from TFM-affiliated schools were also featured in the first part. Then participants explored around the expo to understand the current work and progress from Fellows, Alumni and students. Finally, the participants participated in a facilitated unconference-style discussion on their selected topic from -

Social Emotional Learning, Future Planning, Racial Integration, Teacher Community, and Social Innovation. The purpose of the unconference is to facilitate greater understanding towards these topics and to foster collaborations between the different parties. Among the participants of Connect-ED 2019 were the Ministry of Education partners and representatives from schools around Johor, IRDA, PwC, SIF, ThinkCity, Chumbaka, One SCAA Training Academy, Care United, Dignity, Sunway College, IPGKTI, Institute CityPro, Pelita International School, The Iskandarian, and Nug Network. Since 2016, TFM has opened regional offices in Johor and have placed 4 cohorts of TFM Fellows across Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru, and Kulai. Given that this is their

fourth year in Johor, TFM aspires to get more involved with the community of the Southern Region in order to affect change to the Johor education landscape. This year’s theme is ‘Achieving a Ripple Effect’ - It is through our collective effort students, Fellows, Alumni, public and private partners that we are able to achieve excellent education in Johor. Through Connect-ED 2019, we hope to explore more on Johor education ecosystem and develop collaboration opportunities moving forward,” said Tan Wei Jie, Regional Manager of TFM Southern Region in his speech. TFM is a not-for-profit organisation that envisions that one day, all children in Malaysia will have the opportunity to attain excellent education. TFM recruits, train, and support promising

he Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) will be hosting a charity dinner on 22nd September 2019, in conjunction with MBJB’s silver jubilee anniversary celebration. The announcement was made by Mayor of Johor Bahru City Council, Dato’ Haji Amran A Rahman in his welcoming speech during a hi-tea event with the donors and recipients of the charity donation. Last y e a r, 14 organisations in Johor received their share of the good pie with the efforts of MBJB and the gracious hearts of the donors. 2019 will be the second year that MBJB has organised such an event after its inauguration last year in 2018, where a total of RM1.11 million was successfully collected through the sales of tables for the charity dinner. “MBJB has decided to continue on organising charity events as such based on the success of the first edition last year which received plenty of support,” said Dato’ Haji Amran in his speech. “I would like to remind everyone whether from the government sector, corporate or even

entrepreneurs, we all have our own responsibilities toward the development of the community,” he added. The table sales which is the main part of the charity collection is broken down into four categories w h i c h a re Pl at i n u m (RM100,000 a unit), Gold (RM50,000 a unit), Silver (RM30,000 a unit), and Bronze (RM10,000 a unit). Proceeds from the table sales will be channeled to the Raja Zarith Sofiah Foundation, Johor Bahru City Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Johor, Johor Bahru Down Syndrome Association and others. s k a n d a r R e gi o n a l Development Authority (IRDA) and the British H igh Commission are working together to strengthen the urban and transportation planning in Iskandar Malaysia under the UK’s ‘Prosperity Fund Global Future Cities Programme 2019 – 2022’ which will see an allocation of approximately RM16million for the collaboration in two proposed projects. First, the ‘Smart I ntegrated Mobility Management System’ (SIMMS) project which will see the development of the implementation strategy for Iskandar Malaysia’s Smart Integrated Mobility Management System. S e co n d l y, the ‘Data Utilisation and Data Management for EvidenceBased Urban and Transport Planning’ project which aims to introduce planning decision support which utilises data from the integrated mobility system for better city planning outcomes and the support of Iskandar Malaysia Urban Observatory (IMUO) data integration and analytics. In general, the proposed projects aim to promote an effective and

efficient transportation movement in Iskandar Malaysia and encourage the usage of public transportation in line with the revenue operations of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in 2022. BRT promotes accessible, connected and inclusive cities that contribute to overall city prosperity, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA). “ Transpor tation will be a key driver in making Iskandar Malaysia the preferred destination to invest, work, live and play. It is very important that this is implemented with the best intention for the many stakeholders in the region such as the investors, visitors and the rakyat. The fund and partnership deriving from the programme will give a boost to the effort,’ said Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, Chief Executive of IRDA. The Global Future Cities Programme, which is a part of a wider portfolio called the UK’s Prosperity Fund, will support a range of strategic projects in 19 cities across 10 countries, and Iskandar Malaysia has been selected to be a part

of the programme. The Programme builds upon three integrated pillars that will address key barriers to prosperity namely Urban Planning, Transportation, and Resilience. “The UK is a world leader in the future cities concept ranging from infrastruc ture, construction, standards and financial services. We take a holistic approach to future cities development, taking into account social, environmental, economic and political factors. I am delighted that we are working with IRDA to develop Iskandar Malaysia into a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing, our projects will also contribute towards Iskandar Malaysia’s Smart City initiatives in the ASEAN Smart Cities Network,” said HE Charles Hay, British High Commissioner to Malaysia. SUKMA XX Soon To Take Over Johor in 2020

T

he kick-off towards the countdown for the 20th edition of the Malaysia G a m e s (SUKMA XX) began with a bang with the unveiling of its logo and mascot. The state of Johor will be hosting this biennial event for the second time since its inauguration in 1986. Johor first hosted SUKMA fourth edition in 1992. Officiating the logo and mascot unveiling ceremony, Menteri Besar Johor Datuk Dr. Sahruddin Jamal is

confident all Malaysians will experience the hype of SUKMA XX as it inches closer. The promise of a sporting spectacle will be upon us when the games begin on 11th July 2020. During ceremony, Jimi the Tiger was unveiled as the official SUKMA XX mascot symbolising the state’s longstanding Southern Tigers tradition. Por traying a fierce and b r a v e c h a r a c t e r, Jimi truly represents the Johor identity with ancient Sultanate symbols of palms while sporting a modern fashioned tracksuit for a friendly,

sporty and fun approach. The SUKMA XX logo was also introduced featuring the Jawi alphabet “Jim” which represents Johor as the host where this respective form of writing is still practiced today. Part of the logo also resembles the global sports symbol of a torch. The placement of the SUKMA XX slogan, “Semarak Juara” (The Glory of Champions) at the bottom of the logo denoting the call of taking on the challenge to empower sports and celebrating sportsmanship. More Than 800 Johoreans Ran to Beat Cancer

The charity run brought people together who showed their support towards beating cancer while offering much-needed support for those suffering. The event saw a large number of families and children from different backgrounds, some bearing their own personal stories and connections to loved ones who have been affected by cancer. he 10th Johor State English Language Conference was held here at New York Hotel with the main topic, ‘Multiple Perspectives in the Teaching and Learning of English as a Second Language’. Officiated by the representative to the Minister of Education, Dr Kalminderjit Kaur, Deputy Director of English Language Teaching Centre at the Ministry of Education and HE Kamala Shirin Lakhdir, US Ambassador to Malaysia, the event saw 500 participants who are teachers from all around Johor, including Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Also present at the opening ceremony were Sallina Hussain, Acting Director of Johor State Education Departmen, and Rashid Yusof, Group Editor of New Straits Times. The event was a collaboration with the Ministry of Education, organised by JELTA (Johor English Language Teaching Association) and UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia). In the five workshops that ran over a course of three days, the conference discussed the changes and challenges in teaching the new generation. Teachers gained knowledge from teacher-experts and exchanged ideas on the different new methodologies to make English interesting for both the teacher and student. “English is a tool that opens all doors in the world,” said HE Kamala Lakhdir in her speech. She empathises with the students, who found English to be a “boring” and difficult subject, but she also claimed that English is like sports, where daily practice is needed to be better and good at it, and not merely a language learned only within a period of a classroom. Kamala also talked about the varied contrast between education in the United States versus that of in Malaysia, whereby teachers in the United States do not follow a national curriculum and they do not have a national tests’ system. That way, a student’s

intelligence is not measured by how well they did in the tests. Compared to Malaysia, she feels teachers are also stressed out teaching their students on how to pass the test instead of teaching them how to think. “The real KPI (for teachers) is what happens to the students in 15 years,” she said. “Innovation requires courage to think up and accept something new as well as trying something new,” said organising chairman Vincent D’ Silva at his welcoming speech. “But then again, it also requires courage to say that new ideas do not work. With some changes, it may work and that itself is also an innovation. It is a circle that goes on and on. When such a circle is formed, it is a circle that seeks improvement.” The Conference concluded on the third day on a high note with special guest renowned author and activist, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi who shared the importance of learning and teaching the English language. The event organiser JELTA, is a voluntary, non-profit professional organisation formed in 2000 by a group of teachers promoting English Language teaching. Going Cashless to Help Fight Corruption? OTTIGO Group aims to sign up at least 30% of the 1,187 schools in Johor within the next three years

T

he actions of payment or transactions have been through numerous evolution stages and the rise of e-payment and cashless systems have brought tremendous paradigm shift towards the way we manage our finances, as well as how we conduct our day-to-day transactions. Although credit and debit cards are still widely used, tech-savvy people are generally moving towards other payment gateways or e-wallets to pay for groceries, utilities, and etc. for convenience. Cashless payment system will blur the brick-and-mortar walls of the traditional banking system, leaving behind the hassle of having to drive or walk over to an ATM at the bank just to perform certain

transactions. Recently, the Johor state government had launched its Cashless Payment Programme with Ottigo Group. The programme was officially launched by Haji Aminolhuda Bin Haji Hassan, Exco of Education, Human Resources, Science & Technology who represented the Menteri Besar Johor, Datuk Dr. Sahruddin Bin Jamal. Ottigo Sdn Bhd, the solution provider for this cashless payment programme, will implement OTTICASH payment solutions in Johor, starting with schools. The programme will be extended into other areas gradually. Ottigo had earlier received approval from the Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia to

implement the international prepaid card programme in all schools. The solutions provided by the company includes OTTICASH international prepaid card for every students, teachers and staff in the school, and payment terminals as the respective payment collection points, e.g. canteen and offices. The prepaid card will carry an international brand, e.g. Mastercard or Visa, which can be used not only in the school but also globally. According to Datuk Dr. Sahruddin, he is supportive of the country’s direction towards cashless society, which will help fight corruption. The payment solutions implemented in the schools by Ottigo will make payment become easy, which benefit the students, parents and the schools. The solution

asarbella, an extension of Maslee in K a m p u n g Cahaya Baru, Masai, Johor had organised an event called ‘Majlis I badah Qurban’ in conjunction with the recent Hari Raya Haji notion of sacrificing to share and provide for the less privileged. Azmi Bujang, the Chief of Kampung Cahaya Baru village who was also the VIP to the event had taken the responsibility

olumbia Asia Hospital - Iskandar Puteri (CAH-IP) organised its 9th anniversary Celebration & Charity Run 2019 at the hospital as part of their corporate social responsibility initiative to give back to the community and as an appreciation to patients who have strongly supported since its operations which began in 2010. The day began with the five-kilometer charity run after a complimentary breakfast which was held in two categories for men and women and 400 participants which received a runner pack comprising a t-shirt, finisher medal and a goody bag. “ Th e ce l e b rat i o n focused on uniting the local communities through educational programmes, create public awareness on health aspects and drive a blood donation campaign. The talent development programme,

supported by stakeholders like Johor State Sports Council, Johor State Education Department, Johor State School Sports Council and Sports Johor will be guided by Ezy Swimming Academy who would provide training for around 34 Orang Asli Seletar junior talent that are taken care by non-profit organisation, Diamond Heart. According to EIMSB’s Managing Director, Wan Ahmad Saifuddin bin Wan Ahmad Radzi, “The ESDP will entail three key initiatives: Orang Asli Development Programme,

Swimming coaching clinics and novice competition, as well as EduCity Swim Meet swimming tournaments that’s been held every year since 2015.” One of the children who under went the programme, Kenniel Bin Asiang, 17, said he is able to swim since he was 7 years old. Getting to be in the said training programme taught him a lot of other techniques. The hopeful child of a fishermen’s family could hold his breath for 2 minutes underwater and would love to be an athlete if was given the chance to do so. It is recognised that golf tourists spend more than average tourists, creating more economic opportunities in other sectors such as hotels, restaurants, travel, and entertainment. To boost golf tourism, more local caddies

are needed as well. Liow in her officiating speech, encourages youths, especially young women, to take up caddying as a career. “I believe caddy as a career has great potential and career advancement prospects and this is a good opportunity for youths out there in particular young women to take up the challenge and work in the many beautiful golf courses we have in the state,” she said. A caddy is reported to earn a basic of RM1200, but with tips per round played they could bring up to RM3500 a month. e Exclusiv w Intervie CIDB’s Construction Snapshot as of June 2019 indicated a drastic decrease in projects awarded by both private and public sectors, whereby in 2016; the private sector recorded RM206.8billion worth of projects but as of June 2019, only RM31.3billion was recorded. The numbers are a cause of concern and to address some of the issues, Johor Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (REHDA) Branch Chairman Dato’ Ir. Steve Chong Yoon On shared with The Iskandarian his views on what needs to be done.

What does the alarming numbers by the CIDB mean?

As of June 2019, only RM31.3billion private sector projects were being awarded. Assuming by the end of 2019, the figure doubles to RM62.6billion means that in comparison to 2016, the percentage of reduction in projects awarded is down by about 70%. These numbers tell us a number of things about the industry.

Do share with us what does the reduced numbers mean

The first thing that we can conclude is that the industry is contracting. We are not here to finger point at anyone but to share our concerns. The construction industry is the fourth largest economic driver of our country. Our industry also helps create over a hundred sub industries, therefore, if the numbers continue to drop, you will start seeing an economic slowdown, and you will hear about unemployment, businesses closing down, our Ringgit weakening and foreign direct investments will be affected.

Do you think that investor confidence is on the decline?

One of the reasons that REHDA is voicing its concerns is because we, the members feel that the investor confidence is heavily declining. We notice that some of the investors who came to Johor a few years ago are packing up and heading to Kuala Lumpur or their respective countries. This is something that needs to be addressed or it will create more uneasiness in the market.

What are some of the pertinent issues that need to be addressed?

I believe that one of the main issues that needs to be addressed is policy. Some of our policies are outdated and unsuitable for the current economic climate not only in Johor but nationwide. For an example in Johor, every housing project needs to have a 40% reserve for Bumiputra buyers but a research by UTM shows that the Bumiputra buyers who are keen and eligible to buy is less than 20%. This shows a mismatch between market’s need and enforced policy. So imagine this, each new development that comes up, will have a pile of unsold Bumiputra units which we classify as non-productive. These units impede the developers’ cash flow and at the same time create a haven of houses for drug addicts to occupy and for vandalism and theft to occur as wires and cables of the uninhabited houses are stolen. The nuisance is that the wires are probably sold off for a few hundred Ringgit but the developers have to spend a lot more to reinstate the loss. This further disrupts our cash flow.

What about the minimum threshold on the acquisition of properties by foreign interests’ policy?

The minimum threshold for foreign buyer is set at RM1million and it is something that the government can review. It does not need to be a perpetual decision but it can be based on a case to case basis. The faster we are able to sell our projects means we will have the cash flow to start the next project. The cash flow enables us to keep the industry afloat and also enable us to do our corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects of creating affordable housing for the B40 segment.

Are developers looking to make a quick profit?

This is a question that everyone asks; that are we making noise just to enrich ourselves? The answer is a simple no. For any given project, if we can make a profit of somewhere around 25%, we consider ourselves lucky but you must keep in mind that the 25% spreads over five to seven years. The amount of effort we put in to sustain in that period is unimaginable. If we are not running at a loss, there is also no need for us to retrench our manpower or even shelve projects. All we are asking for is to give us the ability to float and to sustain. Sustainability is the key word.

How urgently does the issue needs to be addressed?

Right now, we are actually sending out an SOS. This is a very serious matter and we are sending out a plea to save us.

How many unsold property units do we have in the state currently?

As at 1Q2019, Johor has accumulated 51,000 of unsold property units worth around RM36billion, with an estimated of 16,000 units being Bumiputra units as of July 2019.

The unsold Bumiputra units make up to RM8billion in total.

What are among the policies you recommend to be reviewed?

There must be an improvement of the Bumiputra units release mechanism. The state government has to come out with a floating system to sell the Bumiputra units instead of marking the unit titles. Some trivial laws which are not relevant at this day and age can be done away with like the advertising laws which stipulate advertising frequency and intervals. The amount of risks and uncertainty and cost that a developer has to undergo makes the developer wonder if it’s worth to launch anything new now. There are lesser risks if we don’t launch anything.

Do you think that asking for a Bumi quote policy review will create some uneasiness?

We are not asking to review the policy to deprive the Bumis from acquiring properties. The review in policy will enable better matching to buyers and create a more vibrant economy. Some of the Bumi buyers don’t want to buy Bumi units as it will be difficult for them to sell the property later on as they have to sell the unit to a fellow Bumi since the title has been marked and this is not easy as the Bumi buyer will opt to buy a new unit compared to buying a sub-sale unit as he has plenty of choices out there.

In terms of compliance and development cost, don’t the developers usually just transfer that cost to the purchaser? We are against doing business in that manner. Please understand that we as developers have a social obligation to build and deliver affordable and quality housing to our fellow citizens. Developers are commonly misunderstood as profiteering entities but rarely known that we suffer in silence. TI

ocal golf group Young & Dangerous (YnD) had organised the first of their yearly golfing event, “Fight Breast Cancer on the Green” where all proceeds of the tournament would be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation to fund their various activities in Malaysia. The event was hosted by Ponderosa Golf & Country Club (PGCC). Breast cancer is one of the top 5 most frequent cancers excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer ranked by cases in both sexes which includes colorectum, lung, nasopharynx and liver cancer and is stated by the World Health Organisation that 32.7% of females were diagnosed with breast cancer in Malaysia. The Breast Cancer Foundation Malaysia is a tribute to the late Tun Endun Mahmood’s strength after finding out she had breast cancer and organised their first charity gala dinner “Walk with Pride” on 31st July 2005, where breast cancer survivors took to the runway, making a powerful statement that there is life after breast cancer

SMK Tun Habab Made Johor Proud at PETRONAS AAY 2019

ekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tun Habab represented Johor at the final of the national level championship of Yayasan PETRONAS’ Sentuhan Harapan – All About Youth (AAY 2019) after beating nine other schools from the state. The school’s project, called PELTZ, an air conditioner that conserves up to 15% electricity, impressed the judges as it addressed the AAY 2019 theme on “Reducing Carbon Emissions for a Better Future”. Two hundred students from 10 schools in Form 2 and Form 4 in Johor spent the last three months developing solutions based on the theme, aiming to benefit the community and the environment. “We are thrilled to make Johor proud at the National Finals, shared team member, Syalabiah Bt Omar Syariff, 16. “It was heartening to see the students working together and pushing themselves out of their comfort zones to deliver strong solutions,” said school teacher, Mohd Nor Akmal B Salleh, who coached the team from the school. This year, 50 schools in five states - Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu, Melaka and Johor competed in AAY 2019. Each team received RM1,000 seed funding, a Technology Toolbox worth RM1,250 and mentoring by PETRONAS volunteers to develop their project over three months. Apart from the National Finals, five schools with projects identified by the judges to have high impact solutions and potential commercial value will have another 15 weeks to enhance their project. A Clean Beach is Everyone’s Responsibility!

dmit it: we’ve all imagined a dream beach gateway to sandy white beaches like in Maldives. We are skeptical about our local beaches – we think they’re not clean enough, polluted and not as pristine. Have we ever wondered why they were in that state and what have we done to help? The Rotary Club of Tebrau organised their first beach clean-up activity near Sedili recently. Their humble first event was attended by environmentalists as young as 9 years old to the young at heart at 94. Faith Lin, President of the Club, sees that we should start treating beaches as we would with our houses by knowing

where to dispose our rubbish. As a travelling runner and hiker, she noticed how countries like Japan were able to keep their parks clean; they were simply educated on waste management. “We can clean the beach today, but if we’re not educated on what to do when there is no rubbish bin, the beach is going to get dirty again tomorrow,” she said. Bottle caps, toothbrushes, empty lighters, cigarette boxes, slippers, ropes and even fishermen floaters were the “gems” hidden in the sand. Participants were seen emptying the semi-filled plastic bottles in order to not burden the weight of their collection bags. Some plastic bottles disintegrated upon first touch; evidence

Can you describe Joy? It is not just happiness. The essence of joy is deeper than superficial excitement. In spirituality, joy is an inner ecstasy that stimulates the cognitive to perceive the world beyond the surface. This normally comes together with the joy of the body and the acceptance of the emotional state at that moment. Joy is the heaven within you. The joy of life is not that hard to experience. It is the easiest experience to achieve because it’s in our nature to be joyful. Humans

are capable in achieving simple state of joy just by sitting on the couch and enjoying the morning breeze that they feel on their skin. Even though joy is a common trip in meditation but not everyone meditates. However, most of us never tasted joy in ourselves. We seek the feeling of inner excitement through others, which doesn’t last long. Therefore, we miss the most powerful feelings in our life – The feeling of aliveness and vitality. Another factor that contributes to

lack of joy is the ‘prison mentality’. It is easy to stay trapped in our mental world than enjoying the moments around us. Here’s what you can do to exercise your awareness in experiencing your own inner joy. Free from Self-Judgement We judge ourselves frequently. We begin by thinking about it and then verbalising it upon ourselves. The most common judgement is “I’m not good enough”. Every time we judge ourselves, we are

suppressing our inner joy. Watch our thoughts and how it traps us to think we are not worthy of joy. Observation reduces the tendency to verbalise judgement. Once we stop verbalising self-judgement, we transcend the judgement into acceptance. Inner joy can be felt through the acceptance that our imperfection as a human is beautiful and powerful. What You Need to Know About Cervical Cancer No.3 most common cancer among Malaysian women but may be prevented through regular screening test

C

ervical cancer is the third (3) most common cancers among Malaysian women. Every year 2000-3000 women were admitted in hospital due to cervical cancer in Malaysia. It’s estimated at least 6.8 new cases of cervical cancer per 100,000 women annually. Cervical cancer is among the few cancers that can be prevented. By doing regular cervical cancer screening test, the risk of getting cervical cancer can be reduced by up to 70%. Cervical Screening (Pap smear) is able to detect abnormal cells before it turns into cancer. By detecting the pre-cancerous cell, it can be treated before it manifests into cancerous cells. Johor has the lowest rate of Pap smear screening in the country

at 39.9%. According to the Fifth Malaysian Population and Family Survey (MPFS-5) 2014, the main reasons are: • Do not require check up • Time constraint • No information • Afraid/Shy

by getting HPV vaccination, avoid sexual promiscuity and avoid smoking.

Cervical cancer is an abnormal cell growth in the cervix (neck of the womb). Cervical cancer can be reduced by getting HPV vaccination and regular Pap smear. Pap smear should be offered to sexually active women age 20-65-year-old. HPV vaccination can reduce the risk of getting cervical cancer but it’s not 100%. You will still need to go for regular Pap Test. The most important risk factor for cervical cancer is infection by human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV can spread from one person to another by skin to skin contact. HPV can infect the cervix during sexual activity. Most women will be able to clear HPV infection with their own immune response. However, if HPV infection persists for long duration, cervical cancer may develop. Risk of HPV infection can be reduced

Is Pap smear painful? It is not a painful procedure but is mildly discomforting.

The following should clear your basic doubts on Pap smear procedure and Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN):

When is the most suitable time (menstrual calendar) for a Pap smear? There are no restrictions as such as long as the woman is not having her menses during the test. Is it normal to have minimal bleeding after Pap smear? Yes, but it will stop in a day or two. How frequent should a woman go for a Pap test? Yearly for two years if the results are normal, then every 3 years once. Should I test for HPV? Test for HPV is more expensive and are not available at most community clinics. Primary cervical screening with HPV Test is however, currently being tried in a Pilot Study

in Malaysia. As for now, HPV test can be used for those with abnormal Pap smear result to determine whether these women need to go for further tests. What if I have abnormal Pap smear result? Pap smear is a screening test hence its not 100% accurate. Depending on the severity of the abnormal Pap smear (Low Grade or High Grade), you may need further tests such as Colposcopy and Biopsy. Does abnormal Pap smear mean I am having cancer? No. Most women with abnormal Pap test don’t have cervical cancer. They just need further tests to make sure they don’t have Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN). What is Colposcopy and Biopsy? Colposcopy is the examination of a woman cervix with magnification to identify any abnormality that can turn into cancer in the future. The cervical abnormality that can manifest into cancer in the future is called CIN. How do I get CIN? If our immune system is not able to clear HPV infection of the cervix, after a few years the cervix may

develop CIN which can become cervical cancer after 5-15 years. What is the treatment for CIN? CIN of the cervix can be removed by performing minor surgical procedure on the cervix. The procedure can be done under local analgesia. Do I need hysterectomy if I am having CIN? No. Minor procedure on the cervix will clear the CIN in most cases. Will I get cervical cancer after my CIN is treated? The risk of getting cervical cancer will be markedly reduced. But you will still need long term follow up as there are chances for CIN to come back. Best not to wait long and go for a Cervical Cancer Screening now. TI

Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Not an Uncommon Problem in Men By the year 2025, it is estimated that there will be over 320 million men worldwide who suffers from ED

W

hat is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)? Erectile Dysfunction is defined as the inability to obtain or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. This problem is mainly associated with aging and has a significant increase in men over age 50. In men between the ages of 60 to 69 years, the prevalence of ED can range from 20% to 40%, and by the age 70, the prevalence increases to 50% - 100%. It is predicted that by the year 2025, there will be over 320 million men worldwide who suffers from ED. What causes ED? The causes of ED are many; i.e. the inadequate blood flow to fill the corpora and/or the inability to prevent the venous flow from leaving the penis, termed venoocclusive disease. These blood flow issues are a direct result of a medical condition, a surgical complication, or a pharmacologic side effect. Cardiovascular disease is also linked with ED. ED symptoms predict an increased risk for a future development of cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke. How is it diagnosed and treated? The initial visit begins with a complete medical, surgical, social, and sexual history. The medical history should identify all medical conditions, their onset, severity, treatment options started and failed, and any current treatments. The focus is identification of any risk factors leading to ED. The psychological history should include any psychological conditions and duration of the condition, such as depression and anxiety, and any medications taken for these conditions. A social history includes the patient’s living arrangements, relationship status, health status of his family members, and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. When collecting data on the sexual history, all domains of a man’s sexual health should be considered. Information gathered includes the presence/absence of erectile functioning, onset of the problem, severity of ED, previous treatments tried, the presence/absence of nocturnal erections, and frequency of intercourse. Identify any ejaculatory problems and any change in libido. Specific data collected during the physical examination and suggested laboratory tests aid in the identification of comorbidities. Each assessment and treatment plan is individually based on the patient’s needs and symptoms. Treatment of ED needs to place more importance on prevention, early intervention in treating

comorbid conditions, and promoting behavioural changes prior to initiating these other options. Dietary changes, development of an exercise programme, weight control, smoking cessation, and stabilisation of comorbid conditions, can lead to improvements in ED What are the treatments available in the healthcare industry? PDE5 Inhibitors All PDE5 inhibitors have a similar site of action, efficacy, and safety profiles, but they vary in time to onset and the duration of action. Men with diabetes mellitus with ED may be less responsive to PDE5 inhibitors. Risk factors for poor response to the PDE5 inhibitors include patients with severe diabetic neuropathy, severe cavernosal injury, psychological stress, and anxiety. These drugs must be used with sexual stimulation to be effective; however, up to 35% of patients with ED may fail to respond to this therapy. Despite high efficacy rates (between 45% and 78%), many patients will drop out of this therapy within 24 months due to factors such as cost, dissatisfaction with erection, or loss of interest in sexual activity. Vacuum device or Injection Therapy Vacuum device and injection therapy has high response rate but are not in favour due to cumbersome usage. Although highly effective, the dropout rate is high as well. Therefore, penile implant is the last option available. Shockwave Therapy Shockwave therapy however has been gaining in popularity due to the ease of use. Without using medicine or surgery, it aims to improve angiogenesis (new vessel formation) by introducing micro trauma and sheer stress to penile vasculature with improved blood flow and there will be longer lasting improved erectile function. 60-75% patients can expect improvement in sexual function although the response rate is less in diabetic patient (50%). inancial crisis is a situation where the value of financial institutions or assets drops rapidly. It’s a result of institutions or assets being overvalued and intensified by the investor’s misbehaviour. The 2007-2008 financial crises are the world’s major economy crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The crisis began in 2007 when the sky-high home prices in the United States (US) turned critically downward and it spread in light speed which first to the entire US financial sector and then to the financial markets overseas. On the other hand, the global financial crisis disclosed significant financial fraud and financial misconduct that have been hidden in the market. “You only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out” has been used to describe the phenomenon of the financial market. It is one of the key variables that contributed to the 2007 financial crisis. Financial crimes are one of the most difficult crimes to deal with as it has many flaws and is normally committed by someone that has power over the society as Sutherland defines it as a “crime committed

by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation.” Moreover, the definition by Benson and Simpson mentions, “criminal behaviour by members of the privileged socioeconomic class as white collar crime”. It is noteworthy that financial crime has been concluded by many commentators that it has either triggered the financial crisis or was a significant contributory factor. In Malaysia, financial crime is referred to the case of the cloning of four cheques, automatic teller machine and credit card fraud, “fly by night” scams, and internet frauds such as spoofing, love scams, parcel scams, email hacking and especially money laundering. Money is the main cause for people to engage in almost any type of criminal activity, and financial crime continues to increase throughout the years. Investigations on money laundering are always difficult because as mentioned before, financial crime is often committed

by a person who has high social status and fraudsters are often several steps ahead. For financial institutions, the first line of defense is the employees as they need to spot the suspicious activity and raise the red flag. The red flag activity should b e

l o d g e d with the regulators for further investigations. This is one of the ways to track down a money laundering trail. In Malaysia, the Anti-Money Laundering and AntiTerrorism Financing Act (Act 613) came into force in 2001. Among

the several high-profile money laundering cases globally is the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal that came to light in 2015 where the money trail spread across several countries including Singapore and the US. In year 2019, the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NAFCC) was formed and headed by Former Immigration Department Director-General Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali. NAFCC was set up by the newly-minted government to tackle money laundering activities and work closely with other law enforcement agencies and government bodies with joint raids and information sharing. NAFCC mainly focus on high-profile and big cases and financial crimes committed on a grand scale by co-ordinating enforcement between government agencies and analysing big data. The big data is a central intelligence database which will compile existing data extracted from different agencies such as land ownership and vehicle matters from the land registry and the Road Transport Department, as

well as financial information from the banking industry. By analysing the big data, NAFCC could identify the flow and illegal outflow of money, and to identify the modus operandi and perpetrators of financial crime. The Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission has announced that a special taskforce will be formed to recover assets related to 1MDB abroad, and the special taskforce will be led by the NAFCC. The team will conduct extensive investigations, legal matters and cooperation with foreign authorities in order to effectively combat the corrupt and incompetent official. hatsApp has fast become an important texting application in our daily lives that connects us to people whether with our immediate family, colleagues at work, friends and even clients. It is such a household name that we went casual immediately in the texting application as it is an extremely convenient and simple application to get in touch but also used as a tool to communicate in the working world to get jobs done. However, the way we understand text would probably differ with others. What we thought is a light and prompt reply, might probably mean that we lack the initiative to some. Therefore, the firing of a Chinese woman because of her emoji/emoticon reply to her superior just couple of months back may seem bizarre to some. Reaction to the incident were mixed, some thought it was too uptight of the superior while there are people who are concerned of people taking work ethics too lightly. So where do we draw the line on being too casual and too uptight? How do we stay in the neutral line when it comes to communicating within the professional

environment inside the texting application? 3 foolproof ways to avoid this sort of mishap to happen: • Leave sarcasm at bay Sure it’s fun and you are of a quirky personality but let’s keep it off a work situation. People either understand or misunderstand what you are trying to say so best to keep it away. • Read the text again before sending Reread your message before clicking the send button in case it sounds offensive to the recipient. Different people have different perception. Tailor our way of texting with this thought in mind to avoid any misunderstandings. • Always be respectful and polite The rule of thumb is to remember that the recipient of our text is a human being and they ought to be treated with respect. Keeping this in mind would always save us from any unwanted conflict that might take place as a result. Simple basic terms such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ go a long way. Other than these three, other acceptable general rules such as do not use all-caps while texting as it may convey you’re angry, and be wary of using inappropriate word or languages and even confusing emoticons that may be perceived negatively. REHDA Sends SOS to the State Government Johor Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (REHDA) called for an emergency press conference to share urgent matters and raising concerns

T

he Johor chapter of the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (REHDA) has put out a distress call to the state government to urgently address outdated housing policies in Johor. The immediate call for action was mooted by REHDA Johor Branch Chairman Datuk Ir. Steve Chong Yoon On and was echoed by the committee members. “We are not pointing fingers at any party, but current market conditions have changed and we need more flexible housing policies and all stakeholders must work together to find an amicable solution,” stressed Chong. The committee called upon the open minds of the state housing

department to review and revisit certain regulations deemed unfairly disadvantageous to the development of the industry. “This is an SOS distress call as we are talking about the survival and sustainability of the fourth largest economic contributor of the country,” added Chong. The pressing issues concerning developers in the state include unsold Bumiputra property units, escalating compliance costs and buyers having difficulties securing bank loans. To date, Johor has accumulated 51,000 unsold properties worth around RM36billion, with an estimated 16,000 units being Bumiputra lots valued approximately at RM8billion. The state’s requirement currently stipulates that 40% of all property units must be set aside for Bumiputra. These requirements apply to residential, commercial and industrial properties as well. For any unsold Bumiputra units, developers can appeal to the state government for a release consent that will convert a property to allow sale to a non-Bumiputra, however, 7.5% of the sale price needs to be paid to the state government as a fee to the state government for each released unit. “The state government needs to come out with a floating system to sell

the Bumiputra units instead of marking the titles,” said Chong. Datuk Steve Chong also called on the government to review the RM1 million threshold for foreigners buying properties in Malaysia as well as to review outdated advertising policies which go as far as to stipulate interval timing between advertisements which can be done away with. Singaporean and other foreign buyers are interested in investing in new properties in Johor Bahru but the price threshold as well as the current slow demand condition has prompted them to take a wait-and-see approach. “If the policies are not reviewed immediately, the market will continue to suffer and developers will be forced to retrench manpower and shelve projects. This is not an option that we are keen off but if market conditions worsen, we will have no choice,” he added. Based on the Department of Statistics’ principal statistics of construction sector 2017, the Johor construction sector employed 251038 people with a total of RM6,975,278 paid in wages which is the third highest in the country after Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Gearing Up for SUKMA 2020: KPRJ Undertaking 11 of the Venue Constructions

K

umpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor (KPRJ) is leading the way as the main builder for SUKMA 2020 infrastructures which should all be completed by April 2020. KPRJ is currently undertaking 11 of the venue constructions for SUKMA 2020. SUKMA 2020 should commence on the 11th of July 2020 till the 19th of July 2020. Earlier in June, the Federal government announced an allocation of RM142million to host the games. A working visit by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was conducted at the Athletics Stadium @ Sportcity in Mount Austin and other venues,

KPRJ’s CEO Datuk Norazam Osman said that the stadium will be the main venue for athletics and rugby and is located 20 km from JB city centre and 35 km from Iskandar Puteri, Johor. “The stadium is designed under the modular system and can hold 5,000 spectators. everal developers in Medini, Iskandar Puteri have taken the first step in tackling the issue with controlling the population and movements of the stray dog population in the area. CI Medini, Sunway Iskandar, as well as Medini Iskandar have their own ways to deal with their rather furry residents. Partnering with the local Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), these developers have taken measure such as catching, neutering or spaying, and releasing the dogs to ensure that the population does not

grow. The city council welcomes NGOs and the public to hop on the bandwagon in efforts to control the stray dog population as to avoid any unwanted problems to residents and patrons. HOPE, SPCA, Zero Hunger For Strays are some of the NGOs who are currently engaging in active canine control. “I would advise that you form a committee consisting of the developers, NGOs, town councils, and even dog lovers to address this

issue. Organise campaigns and CSR programmes, in time, the population will surely decrease, and more of our furry friends will have a home,” suggested Datuk Steven Choong, MP of Tebrau during his dialogue session with the concerned parties. Currently, the MBIP have an SOP to deal with the problem of over population of stray dogs. However, they are only activated when there is a complaint from the public. Besides, the MBIP does not have a dog pound to house the caught dogs for further processing. This is where the

NGOs play their part in supporting the town council with sheltering solutions. In the hope of promoting animal rights, human comfort and convenience must also be taken into consideration. The public are encouraged to follow the simple procedures of getting a licence, neutering or spaying, and even taking care of their animals’ basic needs such as food and shelter. Tourism, Hotels & Airbnb: Industry Harmony Is Much Needed To Move On

T

he hotel industry of Malaysia is shocked with the announcement by Airbnb, claiming to have served over 3.25 million guests in the past 12 months and allegedly generated RM3 billion in direct economic impact last year. Airbnb Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan General Manager Mike Orgill also revealed that there are currently 53,000 Airbnb listings in Malaysia, up from its previous number of

44,000 late last year. In comparison, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture of Malaysia (MOTAC) has a registration database of approximately 250,000 hotel rooms only in the entire country. The number revealed by Airbnb is a staggering and worrying to 21% of legitimate hotels. Calculation basis of such economic impact claims were not revealed. But instead Orgill questioned the registration process

mooted by the MOTAC and did not offer to assist or hand over details of hosts listed on its platform which is obviously readily available. And neither did Airbnb offer to register itself as a business entity in Malaysia despite boasting Malaysia as the fastest growing country for Airbnb in the region for second year in a row. Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) remains adamant in its pursue for industry harmony,

urges Airbnb or similar platforms to be cooperative with industry efforts to regulate home-sharing. Multiple engagements and meetings were held with the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) and various Ministries to ensure tourism growth for the country. Yap Lip Seng, CEO for MAH expressed concerns over the admission that some of the property owners (on Airbnb) collected the tax themselves before submitting it to

the authorities. “Such mechanism does not exist for homes. It is obvious that Orgill and Airbnb is ignorant of Malaysian laws, with them operating entirely out of any laws of Malaysia”, he said. A Foundation By JDT Fans

Membangunkan dan memajukan harta atau aset hasil sumbangan untuk tujuan yang difikirkan perlu melalui kaedah dan usahasama dengan pengurusan bolasepak JDT dan Persatuan Sukan. Menyediakan bantuan dan kebajikan melalui pendidikan, kesihatan, sosial, sukan, tenaga, khidmat nasihat, konsultasi, perkhidmatan dan hubungan bersama termasuk kerjasama badan pertubuhan.

Transformasi bolasepak JDT telah berjaya diperluas sehingga ke peringkat tertinggi setelah menjadikan Kelab Bolasepak Johor Darul Ta’zim sebagai pasukan yang profesional. Dengan pengurusan dan kestabilan organisasi dari segala aspek, perubahan turut dilakukan termasuk membangunkan sukan bolasepak, mewujudkan program pembangunan akar umbi melalui akademi bolasepak dan menaiktaraf stadium, pusat latihan dan fasiliti sukan.
