R

ecently, Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim expressed his disappointment on the condition of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his visit to the Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor Bahru. Bernama reported that he shared his views that the federal government lacked effort in repairing HSA’s ICU following the fire which took place in 2016. In response to that, Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly

Ahmad paid Sultan of Johor, HM Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar a visit to brief the state ruler on the plans to repair and upgrade the ICU at HSA. The hospital upgrade would include wiring installation of the 70-year-old main building which is slated to commence in 2020. “I had also proposed the need for another hospital in Johor Bahru in view of the increase in patients and current congestion at HSA,” said Sultan Ibrahim. Besides that, Sultan

ixty corporations and companies participated in offering over 1,000 vacancies at the Iskandar Malaysia Employment Fair (IMEF) 2019 on 30th N ove m b e r 2 0 1 9 . Th i s annual career fair has been organised by Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) since its inauguration in 2015. Hosted at Grand Paragon Hotel, Johor Bahru, the fair opened more opportunities for the southern region’s job seekers. “According to the Budget 2020, as presented by the Prime Minister recently, RM5 billion has been allocated for ‘Malaysia @ Work’ and is expected to provide job opportunities for Malaysians, especially the youth, for the next 5 years,” Education, Human Resource, Science and Technology committee chairman Aminolhuda Hassan said in his speech. “In line with the government’s focus, I welcome the IMEF 2019 programme as an important human capital development initiative especially for Johor’s citizens who are looking for career opportunities in Iskandar Malaysia,” he added. IMEF 2019 functions

as a one-stop platform that helps both local and expatriates explore and apply for vacancies available in Iskandar Malaysia. The program also serves as a ‘jobmatching’ initiative between employers from various industries and job seekers, either fresh graduates or those with prior work experience. “Despite the challenges of the global economy and the competition from neighbouring countries like Singapore, Iskandar Malaysia is still able to create a stable working environment with a variety of facilities for locals and foreigners to live, work, invest or enjoy here. This IMEF programme is one of the proofs of this region’s achievements and capabilities,” IRDA Chief Executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said. Among the companies involved in IMEF 2019 were Johor Land Berhad, Frost & Sullivan, Regency Specialist Hospital, UMLand, Senai Airport, Tanjung Pelepas Port, Starbucks, The Westin Desaru Coast Resort, Legoland Malaysia, Marrybrown, Parkson, AEON, The Chicken Rice Shop, YTL Communications and Hard Rock Hotel. - by Norfy Shafeq TI

Ibrahim also discussed plans to establish the Tunku Laksamana Cancer Centre with Dzulkefly. “The Health Minister paid me a visit, and plans to set up Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre were discussed with a focus on cancer treatment, research and education,” the Sultan said via his official Facebook page. He said the setup of the cancer centre was to fulfil the aspirations of the late Tunku Abdul Jalil who had always wanted to help cancer patients. Sultan Ibrahim said an

Senai International Airport Reaches New Milestone: 4 million passengers in 2019 A remarkable achievement since its opening in 1974

The lucky 4 millionth passenger was welcomed by the VVIPS

S

enai Airport T e r m i n a l Services Sdn Bhd (“SATSSB”), a member of MMC Group, celebrated its latest milestone on 20th December 2019 for their remarkable achievement in handling four million passengers in a single year - the most since its opening in 1974. The four millionth passenger, Lim Seoh Boey, who was travelling with her three children, arrived at Senai International Airport via Air Asia flight AK 6051 from Kuala Lumpur. She was welcomed with a special celebration led by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, Tuan Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik accompanied

by Liow Cai Tung and Chief Executive Officer of SATSSB, Md Derick Basir. During the celebration, Derick shared that passengers’ volume for the entire 2019 has hit a total of 4.2 million, a significant increase of 20% when compared to 3.5 million passengers handled in 2018. To further accommodate the increasing number of passengers, Senai Airport is also expanding its terminal. “The project shall see the expansion of the current arrival and departure halls, with the construction of four new departure gates equipped with new seating area, covered walkway connecting to aircraft parking bays and new baggage handling

systems at the arrival hall,” said Derick. The airport is currently operating at its maximum capacity of 4.0 million passengers per annum. The expansion project, which is expected to be completed by middle of 2021, will increase the terminal capacity by 1 million passengers to accommodate 5 million passengers per annum. “I hope Senai International Airport can consider showcasing local artworks, particularly visual arts, around the airport. Malaysia is not short of talented artists and an airport should be the place for them to share their talent. It is even better if the artwork can be put on sale for tourists to buy,” recommended Bakhtiar in his speech. In conjunction with the celebration, Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik and Liow Cai Tung also officiated the latest facility at the airport called We Care Corner. It is a dedicated waiting area for the use of ‘Young Passengers Travelling Alone’, the elderly as well as the ‘physically-disabled’. - by Norfy Shafeq TI

Milestone Achievement of One Million TEUs Handled at Johor Port Johor Port handled a record volume of 1.0 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) of containers in 2019 – a 10.5% improvement from 2018

J

ohor Port Berhad (JPB), a Member of MMC Group achieved another milestone by handling a record volume of 1.0 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) of Containers in 2019, an improvement of 10.5% over the previous year’s volume of 0.9 million TEUs, which was also a record volume then. The celebration was officiated by Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia, with an audience of approximately 300 guests from the Port Authority, various Government Agencies, shipping lines and cargo owners. Loke Siew Fook in his speech praised Johor Port for taking proactive measures to overcome its various constraints over the years especially in terms of navigational constraint and has since grown to become the Premier Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port in Malaysia. “Johor Port is already designated as an approved delivery point under some international commodity exchanges such as LME, CME/KLCE and APEX. As a full-fledged multipurpose port and with its wide shipping connectivity, I would also encourage Johor Port to develop as a trading centre and cargo transhipment hub. It should be a natural progression for Johor Port to be a regional cargo hub, leveraging on its strategic location being within 2.5 hours

from the commodities market. Developing Malaysian ports into RDCS is also the aspiration of the government. It is towards this end that I have taken the initiative to waive the A.P requirement for some of the soft commodities entering and transiting in our free zone ports,” he added. “This achievement can be attributed to several key factors which include overall improvement in the container handling productivity, equipment reliability, better communications and information sharing with our customers individually or through associations,” said Dato’ Sri Che Khalib bin Mohamad Noh, Chairman of Johor Port Berhad and Group Managing Director of MMC Corporation Berhad. Since its establishment in 1977, Johor Port has facilitated the exportled economic growth of more than 28 industrial areas in Johor State by providing excellent Container Terminal services to the Container shipping industry and the Export/Import community in Pasir Gudang, Tanjung Langsat and surrounding hinterland including Singapore and nearby Indonesian islands. Johor Port has also contributed to Johor’s position as an important Gateway in the Southern region and a key logistics hub within the intra-Asia region. Johor Port will continue in striving to transform and propel itself to even greater heights, and to build a resilient culture that will stand the test of time. Moving forward, Johor Port has put in place a Port Re-Development Plan to improve the performance of its terminals, including various productivity improvement and equipment upgrading initiatives. Johor Port will continue to invest in ensuring that the Port becomes even more efficient in order to meet the needs of its customers and that Johor Port remains as the Premier Southern Gateway Multi-Purpose Port. - by Harish Mustak TI

State CIC revitalised in a joint project by NGO & Police

C

hild sexual abuse cases have been on the rise and in the limelight, with more child victims braving up to share the incidents with their parents, who then report it to the police. Children are also more conscious of their private bodies as efforts on educating them on sexual abuse has increased. These efforts should be praised, however, awareness can only do so much if justice for the young victim is not served. D e f a c to L aw Minister Liew Vui Keong, in a verbal reply to a question brought up in Parliament in October 2019, noted that sexual crimes against children was at an all-time high, with some 3,738 new cases recorded nationwide since 2017. Of these, 978 cases were recorded between January to August 2019, with Johor featuring prominently in the statistics. When a police report on a child sexual abuse is made, a court orders the child’s statements of the account to be taken at a Child Interview Centre (CIC).

The CIC is where the police records video statements from child victims and child witnesses, to be used later in court. Statements are recorded through a recording machine that abides by the specifications of the court. Certified police personnel have been trained to adduce evidence from children through various methods including drawings and the use of anatomically-correct dolls. CICs were established following the enactment of the Evidence of Child Witness Act 2007. They fall under the purview of the police’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11), which is a branch under the police’s Criminal Investigation Department. The Johor CIC was one of the first three to be set up in the country in 2007, while the other two are located in Bukit Aman and Penang. Until recently, child victims in our state did not have immediate access to give their statements due to budgetary constraints. Johor CIC, a court-gazetted building, was defunct for

several years. Its recording equipment broke down, which meant the child would be sent to Seremban or Melaka’s CIC to have their statements recorded. This meant delays in recording the statement, building up a backlog of cases. A critical component of police investigations involving children, it was crucial to have the CIC fully functioning and operational. It was then when IMSHA winner Johor’s Women League (JEWEL), an NGO championing women’s and children’s rights, recognised the urgency of this matter, entered the picture. “We do a lot of child sexual abuse awareness and prevention work through our signature Kempen TinDAK. As the campaign developed, we became increasingly aware of the many gaps in the child protection ecosystem. In the course of us engaging with the D11 unit, we came to understand the challenges they faced,” said Thanam Visvanathan-Suresh, JEWEL’s past President and coordinator of Kempen

TinDAK. “The lack of an operational recording machine had an impact on the management of cases. Once we truly understood what the problem was, we felt that this was a deficit we had to redress together. Access to justice for child victims of abuse was essential to us; we needed to be part of the solution.” Retired IT consultant Tan Chee Kiong was roped in as a consultant on the project. An additional RM10,000 was donated by the office of the Johor Bahru Member of Parliament. The project included wiring repairs, installing new ceiling boards, servicing the old air-conditioning units, providing a new customised recording machine which was supplied by Penangbased Win Win Dot Net Enterprise, and a complete refurbishment of two key rooms used to record statements from affected children. The total cost of the project thus far is around RM70,000. While more needs to be done to refurbish the

building, the CIC is running at its fully operational capacity for the time being. To further support daily operations at the CIC, another fellow IMSHA winner Kechara Soup Kitchen, Tesco and Free Market JB were invited to donate supplies for the CIC kitchen and provide clean toys respectively. The CIC serves the needs of victims from all over Johor, therefore, the need to have a well-stocked kitchen and toys for the children. Lions Club of J B G o l d e n Ce n t u r y financed the landscaping and cleaning up of the surroundings, and an anonymous donor donated a brand new air-conditioning unit for the child interview room.

Child rights activist Syed Azmi’s NGO Puak Payong donated a year’s worth of supermarket vouchers, while former Miss Malaysia Deborah Henry also sent a supply of hand-made dolls for children to take home. The CIC project was completed in November 2019. Since then, the backlog of cases have all been cleared. “This project was successful because the D-11 Unit embraced the idea of working with an NGO to make things better at the CIC,” said JEWEL President Liza Alip. “ We a r e d u t y bearers to our children, therefore, it was important for us to set standards to get this right” - by Salamahafifi TI

Columbia Asia Hospital Tebrau Welcomes Locals with a Big Heart CAH-IP’s sister hospital opens with two days of fun-filled programmes

C

olumbia Asia Hospital has launched its second Johor branch, which happens to be the biggest of their hospitals nationwide, at Southkey, Tebrau, Johor Bahru. In conjunction with their opening, a two-day event entitled ‘Ayuh Sihat’ community day with Golden Age Day was held. The event ran from 9am to 1pm on 13th December 2019 , while a full day event took place on 14th December 2019 from 9am to 5pm. Rahani Yaacob, Regional General Manager, in her speech

said, “We have recently opened our doors and started operations since 27th November 2019. The response has been overwhelming. Even before we opened, we had people coming in, asking to make appointments! Tebrau is certainly flourishing. With more residential and commercial properties sprouting up at such a dynamic pace, we realised that there would be a demand for healthcare from residents in and around Tebrau. This justifies a second Columbia Asia hospital

in Johor after Iskandar Puteri. At four storeys high with 205 beds compared to the average 100 in our standard model, this branch is the biggest in the Columbia Asia group of hospitals. This allows us to accommodate more than just the residents of Tebrau. We have also embarked on healthcare tourism and are expecting patients from as far as Singapore, Indonesia, even China.” She also relayed a brief motivational speech about taking better care of seniors and their aging health.

n commemoration of the International Day of People with Disability Johor Empowerment of Intellectual Women Association (JEIWA) and Anak Johor Event collaborated to celebrate children with disabilities. The event, a brainchild of Anak Johor Event, aimed to provide special children with a fresh experience in expressing their art. All twenty participants had the opportunity to paint on a dedicated wall at JEIWA Powerhouse’s in Paradigm Mall. Muralist Dhiyaul Mohamad Ashraf, founder of Art Battalion from Selangor, guided the children in their painting. Ashraf began by tracing the outline of the mural and allowed the children to paint on their own. Painting of the whole wall took eight hours over two days, and Ashraf expertly touched up the mural before the mural was displayed to the public. He shared that working with the children was an experience of its own – the first for him, and truly

believes the children are talented in the arts. Zaifri Husin, Director at Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara Johor, graced the event and was impressed with the mural. “The way the strokes of the flowers are painted, it’s different. The (painted) woman’s face holds 1000 stories that she keeps to herself, and her eyes and lips show she is standing strong,” he said. Ashraf concurred that he had maintained the brush strokes done by children, and the comments reflected the children’s skill in the artwork. Muhd Syahir, an officer from IRDA, was also present to support the launch of the mural. The mural can be viewed at the JEIWA Power House multipurpose room at Paradigm Mall, Lot 2F-11. Destigmatising AIDS for a more inclusive society

T

he Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the cause of the condition known as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and has been one of the most stigmatised conditions in the world, especially in conservative Malaysia. In conjunction with the recent World AIDS Day, Monash University came together with the Malaysian Health Ministry, Malaysian AIDS Council and several other AIDS foundations in Johor Bahru and hosted the first ever AIDS forum. Aptly titled “Community makes a difference”, the event was carried out in an effort to educate and spread awareness on key factors that affect those living with AIDS and what can be done to help control and minimise the spread of AIDS in Malaysia. Dr. Suresh Kumar from the Sungai Buloh hospital outlines the Malaysian goal of the “90-90-90” approach whereby, by 2020, 90% of those living with HIV will be aware of their HIV status, 90% of those with HIV will be on antiretroviral therapy and 90% of those receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression, allowing them to lead a normalised life. He also point out the biggest factors in ensuring a near normal lifespan is early detection and treatment. A study in 2016 by the National AIDS Program in Thailand shows that when patients are diagnosed and treated when their CD4 (cluster of differentiation 4) protein counts are around 350, their life expectancy is around 81 years of age. This number severely declines for those who are diagnosed later; CD4 count 200 have a life expectancy of up to 69 years old and those at CD4 count, up to 50 to 49 years old. Thus it is imperative for people to be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Malaysia has a 35% rate of diagnosed patients who are under the 200 CD4 count level, one of the higher figures in Asia Pacific and in contrast to Africa and Afghanistan that have a lower late diagnosis number than Malaysia.

This can be contributed mainly to lack of knowledge and the stigma associated with HIV in our country. A key issue is that many face lack of employment due to having the condition which leads to an increase in sex work for them to try and support themselves financially. The general population must understand that advancements in treatment have led to normalised lives for those living with HIV, where couples can conceive children without transmitting the virus and even without artificial insemination. The National Institutes of Health in the U.S have documented that by adhering to treatment, it is possible to achieve an undetectable viral load within the first 6 months. By continuing the treatment to maintain the numbers for another 6 months, there is effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to a sexual partner. Another study in the United States points out that 20% of the HIV positive population are unaware of their status and these people are responsible for 49% of all new infections. It is also noted that those who are diagnosed do change their behaviour accordingly - lowering the risk of transmission. As for those worried about the cost, early detection and treatment will cost less than late detection and treatment, leading to the increasing importance of raising awareness of early detection. Dr. Masliza Zaid from Hospital Sultanah Aminah point out that even though self-testing kits are more abundant and accessible which allow people to minimise awkward situations such as bumping into relatives at the hospital, people must be aware of false negatives and be vigilant in their testing. She also likened those who do walk-ins for testing and treatment to warriors due to having huge amounts of courage. For those affected by HIV, there are several welfare societies such as Lifezone and the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) which provide shelter, support and guidance for those living with the condition. - by Norfy Shafeq TI

MO N T H LY DR I L L Associate Professor Abdul Rahim has been the Director of OUM Johor Bahru branch since 2009. Prior to joining OUM, he was actively involved in Corporate Training, covering topics such as Corporate Organisation, Retailing, Human Resource Development and Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. He has lectured on a part-time basis at SEDAYA College, UiTM, UUM and a few other private colleges in Johor Bahru. He holds a Diploma in Business Studies and BBA Hons (Finance) from UiTM, as well as a Master’s Degree in Technology Management (HRD) from UTM. Upon completion of his Degree from UiTM, he ventured into various private and public organisations namely UTM, Johor Education Foundation Group, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturer, SCA Packaging, Swan Malaysia, Horizon Hills Development S/B and UEM Land Berhad. With over 30 years of working experience, his research interest is in Marketing, Management and Human Resources. Currently, he is pursuing his Doctorate in Business Administrations at OUM. we focus more on management and knowledge-based subjects such as business, IT, early childhood care, maintenance, manufacturing, safety and more. The variant education level courses available at OUM range from Diplomas all the way to PhDs.

Tell us more about OUM and its unique selling points. Open University Malaysia or OUM is the first self-managed and distant-learning education institution in Malaysia. Established in August 2000 with the motto “University for All”, OUM believes in the democratisation of education, giving everyone a chance at self-actualisation and fulfilling their potential. Being the University of Choice for working adults, OUM promotes flexibility in education where students can tailor their studies to suit their own convenience, study at their own pace, anytime, anywhere, without having to sacrifice time off work or personal interest. OUM also lets you make your work experience count whereby students can include their experience at work to be accredited for enrolment into programmes. The OUM learning centres which are found in convenient locations also allow students to attend classes or seek advice without having to travel far.

What are the courses offered at OUM? As mentioned earlier, OUM is a centre of learning and education for all. However,

What are among the facilities provided at OUM? Facility wise, we are like any other educational institution. We have classrooms (offline and online), a café, halls and a common area. We are also equipped with facilities that are catered to the working class and the differentlyabled such as nursing rooms for working mothers, a wheelchair ramp, as well as an examination centre for the finals. Yes, even though we promote online learning, but the exams still have to be taken the conventional way, as all centres will hold the exam at the same time and day across the world. How does OUM facilitate job matching and placements? OUM does not have to do much in job facilitation and placements actually. However, our unique selling point as an open distant-learning institution has made it easier for students who are already employed or looking for better opportunities in their career to improve and up-skill themselves by taking relevant courses, which will in turn result in a

promotion or a better offer at another organisation. Why did you make the shift from a corporate career to a career in education? Honestly, I fell in love with teaching. I never thought I would be an educator but as many others would agree with me, there is a sort of fulfilment or feeling of contentment when you see yourself passing on knowledge to the ones who are seeking it. I think it started when I was in HR conducting training and facilitating enrichment programmes for employees. The spark made me pursue my own journey of education while also empowering the people around me, especially people from the working class.

From your experience in education, what advise can you give to the fresh graduates? I will have to say one simple thing: just do not be fussy and be open to learn. Sure, the economy and market now is at a downturn state, but many are unaware that this is the perfect time to upskill and educate yourself. Why? Because eventually when the economy is up and running, you will be ready to jump back in with an enriched skillset and knowledge. As for jobs, just try out anything. You do not really have to get into something that you have studied for because, at the end of the day, the educational journey never ends. That is where OUM offers perfect education courses for the working class.

What is your take on life-long-learning?

Taking a diploma at 40? A degree at 60? I think it is a terrific opportunity for selfenrichment. This is actually a subjective question because for some businessmen or entrepreneurs, there is no need for certificates or degrees. All you need is an idea and some start-up capital. The rest is up to your effort. As for those who are looking for something to do or more knowledge in certain fields, they will come to enrol and take exams at any age. Some are just bored, whereas some didn’t get the chance earlier on, but everyone has their reasons.

If you were given a choice to change your career, what would you be? I have always loved plants and gardening. I wanted to learn more about horticulture and plants but was not good at biology and the science of botany. I do gardening just by instinct and enjoy how calm it makes me feel. It is a good form of therapy in my opinion. What do you do in your free time? I would normally be in the garden with my plants or spend time with my family. TI

Museum of the 24 Festive Drums

Tan Chai Puan, co-founder of the 24 Festive Drums, explains how this unique art of drumming is summarized in this Chinese couplet; Meanwhile Year Six students in Malaysian Chinese Primary Schools learn about the heritage of the 24 Festive Drums from textbooks [open pages are displayed on top of the drums].

I

n 1988 when the Johor Bahru Chinese Association organised the 9th Chinese Dance Festival held at Foon Yew High School, Tan Chai Puan and Tan Hooi Song were tasked to create its theme song, “Begin to Dance.” A poem was composed and Chai Puan also created the artistic vision of “Drumming up Nine Drums” as the base for the theme song. The success of the drumming performance at the opening ceremony of the Dance Festival inspired Chai Puan to create a new form of percussion art but he could not decide on how many drums to feature until he read the work of a Taiwanese poet. The beauty of the four seasons was described in 24 poems, each representing one of the 24 Solar Terms, a practice in ancient China which was developed through observing the sun’s annual motion, traditionally used as a time frame to direct agricultural production and annual festivals. As Chai Puan was then a council member of the JB Chinese Association, he proposed the setting up of a 24 Festive Drum troop and sought financial help from the association. In May 1988, the association agreed that the five dialect clans in Johor – Hokkien, Hakka, Hainanese, Cantonese and Teochew – would contribute funds for the purchase of the first set of the 24 drums from China. It was a proud event for the inauguration ceremony of the 24 Festive Drums held at the Johor Ancient Temple

on 12 June 1988, with a performance by a student troop from Foon Yew High School, coached by Hooi Song. Famous calligraphic masters from Malaysia and Singapore graced this event to write in beautiful calligraphy the 24 Solar Terms, the inspiration which named the 24 Festive Drums. This significant event marked the birth of the 24 Festive Drums, an art of drumming proudly created in Johor Bahru through Chai Puan’s cultural ideas and Hooi Song’s musical composition. I am familiar with the history of the 24 Festive Drums because I featured cultural activist, Chai Puan, in an exclusive story under Portraits in my book, My Johor Stories: True Tales, Real People, Rich Heritage in 2017. When he shared with me the chronology of events that led to the creation of this unique art of drumming, Chai Puan admitted that he never imagined the far-reaching impact of this proudly Johor-born tradition which has been exported back to China! From a single drum troop that started in Foon Yew High School, drum troops have now been established in schools and universities, not just nationwide but also worldwide In July 2008, Hooi Song became the first Malaysian Chinese to be declared a Living Cultural Heritage of Malaysia, an honour bestowed by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Not long after that, he lost the battle to cancer and passed away peacefully at age 61.

Since 2008, Year Six students in Chinese schools have been learning about the founding of the 24 Festive Drums from their textbooks and the reputation of Chai Puan was elevated to that of a living legend. At the official opening of the Johor Baru Chinese Heritage Museum by the Johor Chief Minister in 2009, he declared Jalan Tan Hiok Nee to be a Heritage Walk. Then weekend cultural activities were organised by the Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk committee to create more interest in the city’s heritage quarter. Meanwhile Chai Puan kept me updated (in English) about Chinese cultural events happening here as well as the development of the 24 Festive Drums, locally and abroad. I was privileged to attend the 30th anniversary of the founding of the 24 Festive Drums at the Johor Ancient Temple in June 2018, where the original drum troop from Foon Yew High School was present in a meaningful reunion. It was a double celebration for Chai Puan when he was also declared a Living Cultural Heritage of Malaysia by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, in October that same year. Registered as an association in 2015, the 24 Festive Drums Association organised their national level 30th anniversary grand celebration in Kuala Lumpur. Looking back, I was involved in countless Drums’ events including their biannual International Drums Festivals and

The 24 Festive Drums, an art of drumming which was proudly born in Johor, has been exported worldwide with an increasing number of drum troops established in nations marked on this world map.

Hooi Song’s memory and his contributions to this art of drumming, in the museum. Chai Puan declared that it was uncanny that the eye-catching calligraphy displayed in the lobby was in fact, done by the same calligraphic masters who participated in the inauguration ceremony at the Johor Ancient Temple back in June 1988! On the wall, the development of this art of drumming is recorded in chronological order on a series of charts, mounted on the tops of old drums. Among the highlights in the museum are a cycle of the 24 Solar Terms, a world map that marks where 24 Festive Drum troops are established and a four-seasons tree. Upstairs, visitors may have a hands-on drumming experience. I enjoyed Chai Puan’s detailed commentary while learning about his continued efforts to develop this art of drumming in the region. I know that his desire is for the birthplace of the 24 Festive Drums to eventually be acknowledged as the Drumming Capital of the world. The Museum of the 24 Festive Drums is located upstairs at No. 31 Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor. Open daily, 8.30am to 5pm. Closed on Tuesday. TI

At the start of the Museum tour, visitors are introduced to the 24 Festive Drums, a unique art of drumming which was acknowledged as a Malaysian National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.

National Competitions, which started since 2010. Last year, I was among the first to learn about the setting up of the Museum of the 24 Festive Drums and recently, Chai Puan invited me over for a preview. Located near the JB Chinese Heritage Museum, this museum aims to complement the visitors’ experience in the heritage quarter. Likewise, the Museum of the 24 Festive Drums also has dual entrances – from Jalan Ibrahim and Jalan Tan Hiok Nee – while the museum is situated upstairs. While Chai Puan dearly wished to share with Hooi Song, the crowning moments when the 24 Festive Drums was recognised as a Malaysian National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, he is pleased to honour

The creation of the 24 Festive Drums’ art of drumming was based on the Chinese cycle of the 24 Solar Terms, a cultural tradition in China, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.

ohor Corporation (JCorp) has increased its stake in QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd, which operates KFC and Pizza Hut fast food chains in Southeast Asia, to 56% compared to just 27% in 2012 as reported by Bernama. Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal said this has increased JCorp’s investment in QSR Brands to RM3.33 billion which is a 29% increase. Foreign media report stated that the owner of QSR Brands is considering selling KFC and Pizza Hut fast food chains for about S$1.96 billion (RM6 billion). The statement made by Dr Sahruddin was a rebuttal to the rumours. Dr Sahruddin said JCorp’s strategy is to further grow QSR Brands, not just in the form of restaurants, but also to drive the halal industry by strengthening the middle and upstream sectors of the poultry industry. “This will enable QSR Brands to supply fresh and frozen halal chicken products in the Malaysian and global markets – a potential and bigger strategy in terms of the economy, employment or entrepreneurship,” he said. The state government continues

S

ingapore POP sensation MICappella has released their latest EP titled “LOVE, MICappella”, a heartfelt individually personalised rendition on various aspects of LOVE in six parts. The band held two exclusive listening parties for both media and fans at Unplugged where the audience heard the band perform their latest original songs live. The hour-long listening party also treated audiences to a preview of their latest single, behind-thescenes footages and got to know the band members better through a lively interview segment. The other theme that runs simultaneously intertwined with love is one of nostalgia where band members sampled and referenced classics, breathing new life to each, by pairing the Shanghai jazz classic with a modern EDM twist for ‘I Want Your Love’ or sampling ‘You Are My Sunshine’ in Through Your Eyes and ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in ‘Friends Forever’ Amongst one of the most respected Singapore homegrown musical sensations, MICappella has been galvanising feverish devotion amongst fans in the region across Taiwan, China and Hong Kong lately. After releasing 2 albums and picking up over 7 Million views on Youtube, MICappella is on the cusp of cementing their status as icons as the vocals only pop sensations

who have grown into darlings of newfound fans as they carried their ebullient vocals showcase of over 50 shows as far away as Japan, Russia and USA in the past 2 years. It has been an exciting time so far as the band reflected on 2019 where MICappella has performed at close to 50 international and local stages representing Singapore, as well as sharing their love and the craft of A Cappella to more than 20 schools. Their latest and one of the most exciting achievements was to represent Singapore at the Singapore Grand Prix Flag off ceremony where the band performed their very own rendition of the Singapore National Anthem. Apart from just performing at live events, the band also released 4 original singles, culminating in the release of their EP titled, “LOVE,

MICAPPELLA”. A sharp contrast from their previous two releases, this EP is the first of a 2-part EP released in 2019 and 2020. Love, MICappella, as the name suggests, has an overarching theme of LOVE that explores each of the band member’s personal experiences with love. “As a band and as singer/ songwriters, we each have our stories to tell. Each individual member gets at least a turn as project manager to oversee or get directly involved in various aspects of a song such as songwriting, lyrics, arrangement and studio production. Through this, we hope that each member’s individual personalities will shine through even more and audiences will not just get to know the band but also the band members on a more personal level as well. Regardless of what the story and style of music is, what encapsulates and gels this EP together will always be their voices and the wall of sound the band creates that is signature to MICappella,” says band leader and vocal percussionist, Peter Huang. Keeping in line with the album’s theme of LOVE, the band will be holding an exclusive listening party to a small group of fans. This will be the first time this line-up will be performing in such a cosy setting. “Our listeners have always supported us from afar when they come for our shows and concerts. It’s time we really get to know them in an up-close and personal setting, share our experiences and perhaps even hear from them. We dedicate this labour of Love to our fans!” love, MICappella. TI

hen was the last time you spent an entire day without mobile phone by your side? And how do you feel when you do not have access to the virtual world? Can you spend time alone without browsing the social media or playing games? First, we need to acknowledge the urge and attachment we have with our screens and we are going to explore the most subtle addiction we have as a collective. According to Google, screen is a noun described as ‘a flat panel or area on an electronic device such as a television, computer, or smartphone, on which images and data are displayed’. Whenever we use screens such as mobile phones or television, we are accessing data. Addiction on the other hand simply means the inability to stop doing or using something, especially something harmful (Cambridge Dictionary). Addiction to screen is complex because we are not addicted to the screen itself but rather addicted to the stimulation that we receive through the data displayed. This alone creates our dependency on mobile phones, television and gaming. These forms of addiction may not look like addiction towards drugs, alcohol, gambling or sex but the effects on individual and collectives are still the same. Any form of addiction weakens our muscles, reduces our awareness and possibly distortS our energetic field be it individually and collectively. And here lies the danger of this addiction; the social acceptance towards it. Take mobile phones for example, since it has become a daily need for us these days, we may come to a point that we do not see it as an addiction for what it is. This is a hurtful truth to acknowledge. Our addiction towards the screen has become a silent killer in many ways. It kills our relationship, families, personal growth and health. Think…How many of you feel happier looking at screens than enjoying the aliveness of everyone and everything present around you? TI

recently had the opportunity to travel to Desaru for a staycation at Amansari Hotel Desaru. Over the years, Desaru coast has transformed from a coastal line with a public beach and a few resorts dotted here and there, to one that boasts branded resorts, a waterpark and world class sporting events. But with the arrival of big brands, we also see an eventual rise in prices. Trying to find something affordable has become a challenge. Fortunately, you don’t have to break the bank to stay at Amansari Hotel Desaru, a 3-star hotel that caters to both business and leisure travellers. Can physiotherapy relieve headaches, migraine and dizziness?

M

igraines, headache or dizziness are common problems faced by working adults. It can resolve after a good night‘s sleep or massage but the root cause may still remain. If you are experiencing these symptoms, please seek medical advice. According to Regency Specialist Hospital’s Senior Physiotherapist, Eow Sze Kim, it might be caused by the following problems:

• Neck Issue It is also known as cervicogenic headache which is caused by underlying neck issues. The junction of the upper neck (cervical) and back of head (occipital) regions have many painsensitive structures which include the lining of the cervical spine, the joints, ligaments, cervical nerve roots and the muscles. It is similar with other types of headache or migraines. This common type of headache usually responds well to physiotherapy treatment. There are few major contributing factors such as poor posture, stiffness of the joints in the neck and upper back, muscle imbalance (muscle tightness and muscle weakness) and previous neck trauma (sport injury). • Tension Headaches Tension headache is the feeling of a tight band around the head. The muscle in the head and neck will give the experience of a certain level of tightness. It is usually caused by physical and/or emotional stress. Emotional stress will release stress chemical adrenaline which will tighten the muscle of the back, shoulders, neck and head. This can further cause pain in the head. •

Benign Proximal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) BPPV is a condition characterised by episodes of sudden and severe vertigo (dizziness) with head movement. Common triggers of vertigo include rolling over in bed, quickly getting out of bed and the sudden lifting of your head to look up. How can physiotherapy help with headaches? Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury, disease and disorders through p hy s i c a l m e t h o d s — such as exercise, manual t h e r a p y, electrotherapy and o t h e r t re a t m e n t s. It can be a good s u p p o r t to t re at headaches or vertigo. Physiotherapists are experts in posture and movement of the body. Those that are welltrained with specific skills in vestibular rehabilitation can conduct a

comprehensive assessment of your headaches. Through these tests, they are able to establish the cause of your symptoms, diagnose it, and manage and prevent some of the common types of headache. What to expect during physiotherapy session? Physiotherapist will start with a subjective assessment where he or she will ask you a series of question with regard to your headache. This will be followed by an objective assessment that can include neck range of motion, cervical position sense, Romberg test, nystagmus test with cervical rotation, saccade eye movement, gaze stability and Dix-hallpike manoeuvre. After the assessment, your therapist will provide you with a personalised exercise regime. Your symptoms will normally resolve within 4 – 6 sessions of therapy. The treatment methods may include heat therapy, trigger points release, electrotherapy or joint mobilisation that require stretching and passive movement technique.

There are some lifestyle factors that you should also take into consideration: • Posture –Stand tall with your chest lifted, shoulders relaxed, head level and chin tucked in. • Work – Avoid working with your head stagnantly down for long periods of time, and frequently stretch and change positions. • Sleeping – Poor sleeping positions can strain your neck. • Exercise – Carry out exercises that help with tight or weak muscles to help you restore normal function. • Relaxation – Learning to recognise when you are tense is an important component in rehabilitation. Learn to relax yourself. olumbia Asia Hospital Iskandar Puteri (CAH-IP) gives back to the society through its new project “Titian Kasih”. Translated, it means “bridging love”, an accurate description of the work they do to bridge their medical service with the community. Collaborating with its Sports and Recreation Club, CAH-IP ’s Corporate Social Responsibility benefits Baitus Solehah Caring Centre, a home that houses unmarried pregnant women and mothers. The event supported women by educating them on cervical cancer, handling newborns, milk storage, nutrition, and providing emotional care. Dr Ding Eng Li,CAH-IP General Manager, conducted a talk on cervical cancer, giving information on the risk factors and symptoms of cervical cancer and the importance of seeking medical evaluation. Hanidah Kasmin, Charge Nurse, demonstrated the proper technique of breastfeeding, positions, and explained baby’s behaviours, movements and

of breastfeeding and ensuring the baby is comfortable. The women also learnt what a normal breastfeeding baby’s stool looked like to reassure a new mother’s worries about her baby’s bowel movement. Wan Nur Safariza Suhaili Charge Nurse, shared insights on expressing breast milk effectively, how to massage the breast when engorged, breast milk storage and how long to thaw frozen breast milk. Yap Pau Lin, dietician, talked about nutritional needs for both mother and baby. Questions from the floor were raised, and amongst them, their concerns about eating herbal supplements after giving birth answered and finding out that drinking black coffee keeps the baby awake at night. CAH-IP donated electrical equipment such as standing fans and a vacuum cleaner, after receiving feedback from the home on their needs. The machines, along with basic daily essentials and medication, were contributed by doctors and staff of the hospital. Collectively, all

“Columbia Hospital Iskandar Puteri plays a role in promoting health awareness to the public. Our aim is to host more CSR events promoting healthrelated awareness and healthy lifestyle campaigns which include health screening and health talks by our specialists at public places in Johor,” said Dr Ding Eng Li. “As a health care provider, we must also give back to the community,” she concluded. Donation Campaign at their hospital, East Wing, Outpatient Area, on 18th January 2020 (Saturday) , 9am to 3pm. The public is cordially invited. CAHIP will be celebrating their 10th years anniversary in 2020. Baitus Solehah Caring Centre, location undisclosed, appears to be like any normal family house from its façade. No signboards were hung, nor were there commotion that shouts any of its activity. It was meant to be that way: a safe house for women and their babies from their sexual predators, irresponsible boyfriends, and society’s stigma. All 50 occupants – 39 mothers and remaining babies,

follow a schedule that starts their day as early as 4 AM. The woman’s day is filled with Islamic studies, delegated house chores, and dedicated nap times. Most of them knew what they signed up for – finding the house through their search for help online and willingly admitted themselves to be sheltered. Since their establishment in 2013, the home has seen over 800 occupants – not a figure to be proud of, but at least over 300 infants were saved from rash and confused acts of newborn abandonment and abortion that is potentially harmful for the mothers as well. All mothers are given counselling to aid the psychological trauma. According to Ummi Munaliza, a retired educator and founder of the home, 30% of the pregnancy cases are victims of rape while the remaining are pregnancies from premarital sex. Their youngest occupant was 13, a victim of pedophilic sexual activity. All underaged pregnancies are classified as police cases. “The first case we handled was a university student in 2012. Back then, not everybody had access to the internet. You need a laptop and a modem to be

connected, so these cases were more prevalent in university students. Now, everybody has access to the internet,” shared Ummi. The women must stay at the home for a minimum of six months before they would be allowed to leave with their parent or guardian, or lawful husbands. Ummi said that sincere men have approached her to ask for the hand of the women to marry. She carefully assesses the man’s background, along with the woman’s liking and consent, before arranging the marriage, just like she would with her own daughters. She had seen 30 of the women from her home tying the knot through her help. Columbia Asia Hospital – Iskandar Puteri learned about Baitus Solehah at the Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards gala dinner in October 2019. Baitus Solehah won the Human Empowerment, organisation category in 2019. CAH-IP were inspired by their good work and reached out to support them. PIP and SMART Principle – Part One

A

company is as strong as its manpower. When employees are highly motivated and perform well, the company benefits from it. Productivity will increase resulting in more revenue and profits. Annually, companies spend a large por tion of its budget on recruiting and training employees. Perhaps this would be a good time for employers to shift their focus to retaining a n d enhancing its existing workforce instead of taking the unfruitful path of termination as what a waste of resources it will be. The issue of poor performance usually begins when the immediate superior or the manager realises its subordinate is incapable of executing his tasks or shows a decline in performance. When such a matter comes to light, employers are urged not to be so quick to dismiss an employee. This is because you are legally bound to put in effort to assist the employee and instant dismissal would not be financially fruitful for the organisation. This article serve as a guide on how to handle a performance issue.

Curbing Performance Issues from the Beginning Steps to tackle this issue need not begin when performance has already plummeted. It can be avoided from the very beginning at the recruitment stage itself. During the interview, candidates are not always truthful or might

oversell themselves which may lead to a mismatch with the position offered. In the long run, you will start to see the employee’s inability to perform and its

ripple effect. This is why it is a l w a y s good to have candidates take personality tests such as the Saville Assessment to see their actual ability and suitability with the position offered. Nevertheless, this solution may not be viable for companies needing high number of employees within very short periods of time. Simple interviews are usually done without further screening then the employee is off to the production line which in the end causes high turnovers. An employer can also assess an employee’s capability during his probationary period or while the employee is on a fixed term contract. With this data, one can decide on whether the particular employee is worth retaining or not.

Deciding on the Correct Route to Tackle a Performance Issue There are few suggested solutions in addressing the issue at hand such as a performance improvement plan (PIP), re-designation, demotion, and of course, termination of employment. I’ll elaborate further on PIP as a solution which is aimed at rehabilitating and enhancing an employee’s productivity. PIP is a programme designed on a case to case basis by both the employer and employee to increase his/her performance up to an acceptable standard. A PIP shall set him/her up for success ensuring positive effects for both the business and the employee. Before deciding to place an employee in PIP, managers should first do their preliminary investigation. The question in mind should be, ‘Is PIP the appropriate programme here?’ These are the few key points to be taken into consideration:

If that is the case, PIP is not suitable. Instead, a thorough target setting session should take place.

Legal Adviser MECA South Sdn. Bhd. alya@meca.com.my

recruitment should relook into their hiring process. The employee then should either be placed in PIP or reassigned to a more suitable position. In situations where a good employee suddenly underperforms, it would seem to suggest that there might be external pressures affecting him such as personal problem or work environment changes which caused the employee’s inability to cope. For example, when there is advancement in technology in which he has not been trained for. Upon identifying the root cause of the problem, then the superior can customise the PIP programme accordingly. TI

Is the superior committed to helping the employee? PIP requires both the employee and the superior to be disciplined in the implementation. The employee must strive to achieve the target while the superior must conduct timely reviews guided according to the appropriate standards. If the superior is not keen on helping or participating, PIP would not be a success. •

Has the employee been performing poorly since the start of his employment or did it happen instantly or gradually? If the employee has been struggling since joining,

Is it a performance issue or a disciplinary matter? If it is the latter, the correct route would be to undertake disciplinary action such as the issuance of a show cause letter. •

Is the employee actually performing poorly or is there a problem between him and his superior? Most of the time it is due to the difference in understanding between the superior and the subordinate of the goals targeted.

There are also times when the superior uses PIP as a way to legally terminate an employee. By setting up the employee for failure, the purpose of PIP is defeated altogether.

Five Indicators to Take Heed of in Year 2020

W

elcome to Year 2020! It’s interesting to note that in 2019, the global stock market was in chaos. Many ‘experts’ predicted that the market was at the brink of collapse . Fast forward to today and the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes have gone up by around 20% and have reached a historical high. What opportunities await us in 2020? Let’s discuss some key indicators. • Higher Indexes Apart from the US, the market indexes in Europe and India have neared an alltime high, indicating higher risks and valuations. Every new high is bound to have a correction. Oddly, the bull kept climbing even with so much negative news flowing in. Now, the bad news has reduced. Does it mean the market possesses higher risk? It’s worth reflecting. • Gold Price When investors perceive the market as ‘dangerous’, they find a safe haven (gold) to park their funds in, leading to higher gold prices. In the second half of 2019, gold price increased substantially and stood above the 1500 psychological level for a few months. Although it is now below 1500, it has been

recession. Luckily, this did not affect the global economy. On the other hand, the trade war, which seems to have entered a positive development, could be a potential black swan if there is an unexpected twist. • Trade War Development The trade tension between the two largest economies may have subsided, but has not yet resolved. In fact, the trade development is a double edge sword. It can either turn into the bull or the bear and take control in 2020. Having said that, the year end is usually a better time for the stock market. Here’s a look at our portfolio on 16 December 2019:

considered high for the last five years. It means the market is somehow reserved and uncertain. But don’t get overwhelmed. The gold price was above 1500 in 2012 and 2013, and nothing bad happened. Eventually, gold prices came down and the market moved on. • US Dollar A few factors affect the US dollar, such as interest rates hike, US economy data, commodity prices and trade war development. What matters most is that strong US dollars favour export-oriented companies like furniture makers, technology and gloves manufacturers. A weaker US dollar affects these companies’ earnings. • Potential Black Swan Black swan events happen unexpectedly and the results often carry an extreme impact. The best way to deal with them is to manage your risk appetite. An obvious example is the recent Hong Kong protest, which paralysed the country’s daily operation and caused

The portfolio shows a 295% gain since November 2015. It is not the result of buy and keep, but rather, buy, monitor and take necessary action. In December 2019, we sold 45000 shares of RANHILL (5272) at 1.13 with a profit of nearly RM14000. We are also entitled to 1.5 cents and 0.5 cents of dividends from SCICOM and JHM, respectively, totalling dividends to RM1950. Add NOTION (0083) The NOTION management targets sales revenue at RM320 million in FY2020 and above RM400 million in FY2021 mainly from fabrication. With better economies of scale, the company also expects higher net margin moving forward. Seeing the strong growth prospect and improving profit margin, we bought 60000 shares of NOTION at RM0.9. After receiving dividends, the new cash level will become RM92321. Conclusion In essence, I believe the above indicators give us an idea on how the macro economy and stock market will fare in 2020. Let’s see what it has in store for us. TI

onderosa Golf & Country Resort has adopted ‘A Green Leap Forward’ as a theme for environmental sustainability for this year and beyond. The initiative involves various sections of its resort operations, over gradual phases. “The reason why we are moving it in phases is to avoid drastic changes, giving time for members to adapt to the changes we are planning to implement. It is time for golf resorts like us to initiate moves for preserving the environment through the principles of re-use, reduce, recycle and to upcycle whenever possible”, said Tan

Kai Yang, General Manager of Ponderosa Golf & Country Resort. The café at the resort has discouraged the use of plastic straws since June last year and the use of straws will gradually cease. The F&B department is also looking to replace plastic bags for takeaways with paper products. Banqueting shall be replacing mineral water in plastic bottles which are placed on meeting tables with refillable glass carafes. Over at the Sports & Recreation department, the ‘1 towel only’ policy at the changing rooms will start during the first quarter of 2020, together with a “Say

No to Plastic” campaign at the counters where members often request for extra plastic bags to keep their personal belongings after a swim or gym workout for their wet or soiled clothes. Instead, a custom-designed recyclable bag will be given one-time to all members so that they may bring it with them each time they partake in any activities at the Sports & Recreation centre. The housekeeping and maintenance departments have already been practicing waste separation and adopting energy saving methods. Plants are also being used as natural means of repelling odour in the guest toilets; while there are plans to put food waste into better use in the future. 2020’s ‘Let’s Bond Weekend’ School Holiday series will continue with an environmental theme in all its activities in order to keep the momentum going to educate the general public on the need for conserving our nature and the Earth in which we live. - by The Iskandarian TI

Homes for Sale or for Show? RM3.8bil worth of properties yet to be sold in Johor despite increase in transactions

S

tate Housing and Rural Development Committee chairman Sr Dzulkefly Ahmad calls for reforms in the housing sector to address overhang or unsold p ro p e r t i e s w h i l e p rov i d i n g 100,000 affordable homes by 2023. “We need to reform in terms of building, distribution, financing and reducing building costs. There are weaknesses which can be manipulated by unscrupulous developers,” he said, adding that so far some 1 3 4 , 1 9 5 a f fo rd a b l e h o m e s were yet to be built by

developers. Johor topped the list in the countr y with excess proper ties, with some 5,988 unsold valued at RM3.8bil statewide, The Star had previously reported. Dzulkefly said among the properties not sold include service apartments and proper ties valued bet ween RM500,000 and RM1mil. “Based on statistics, there is a mismatch between demand and supply, especially with developers tr ying to

make the most profits by building more high-end properties. He said, “Statistics from the Valuation and Property Services Department shows that the overall property market was slowing down in 2018. However in Johor, the amount of transac tions in 2018 has i n c re a s e d by 6% compared to 2017.” “As for overhang or no sale units in 2018,

there has been an 18.1% increase in volume. Property developers must play a role in choosing the right type of property to develop at the right time to avoid a mismatch between s u p p l y a n d demand. Now is the time to call for more properties that are worth between

RM300 – 500k.” However, the property market did show some signs of recovery in 2019. “Developers play a very important role in stimulating the economy. We appeal to the government to relook at some of the present policies which may be outdated,” said Dato’ Ir. Steve Chong Yoon On, REHDA Johor Branch Chairman in a statement. “There has to be a balance of property development in the market with some affordable homes, middle range, and high end homes included,” he added. - Harish Mustak TI
