he Sports Johor Logo has been finalised and officiated by Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar, the State Youth, Sports and Culture Committee Chairman. The event provided a vision of the future by implementing more strategic and dynamic sport events for educational development and e f fe c t i ve sports training. The role of Sports Johor is seen as a facilitator and moderator of sports development in Johor which is managed by Johor State Sports Council (MSNJ). Sports Johor Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary

of the state-linked company Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor (KPRJ), will focus on organising sports events, formulating strategic marketing as well as providing educational and sports training to youths who excel in sports. The formation of Sports Johor is in conjunction with Johor being the venue for the 20th Malaysia Sports (SUKMA) in 2020. Mohd Khuzzan said the venues for SUKMA 2020 included Larkin Arena Stadium, the stadium at Mount Austin and the Larkin Indoor Swimming Pool. “ Th e s t ate government had started two years earlier to prepare Johor

as the host for SUKMA in 2020. Aside from SUKMA 2020, the CEO of Sports Johor, Haji ‘On Bin Jabbar said that Sports Johor is also in the midst of planning electronic spor ts (e-sports) events. “We noticed that the youth nowadays are more interested in electronic sports rather than physical sports itself. We are looking at different venues such as shopping malls. E-sports should be held at shopping malls to attract crowds and there will be attractive prize money offered to get more youths to participate,” said Haji ‘On Bin Jabbar. - by Rose Natasha TI

As a company that is committed to responsible sustainable development, the company undertook the Eco School initiative in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature to support selected schools and turn them into a 21st century classroom environment. “E-waste is becoming an increasingly pressing problem today because of the sheer number of

poisonous chemicals that is released into the environment when they are dumped in a landfill untreated,” said Prabageran Thiagarayah, SEA Continuous Improvement Manager. This year, Kerry Ingredients donated items such as refurbished computers, projectors as well as other items including furniture to three selected schools in Johor SMK Dato Penggawa Timur, SMK Munshi Abdullah and SRJK (T) Tiram. Kerry staff also conducted several activities with the children including soap making and creating their own fertiliser. “As we continue to adopt the latest and greatest that technology has to offer, we want to ensure that we look out for ways in which we can reduce our impact on our environment,” added Prabageran. by Amin Khairuddin TI

P

elabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a member of MMC Group became the first port in the world to depart a vessel with a final load over 19,000 TEUs. The milestone was accomplished on 18 August 2018 when Mumbai Maersk, one of Maersk’s 2nd Generation Triple-E vessels left the port with the record load of 19,038 TEUs. The vessel, deployed on the Asia-to-Europe Service (AE5) arrived from Shanghai, China to PTP and is now en route to Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands. Efficient planning and execution of container operations and good optimisation of resources were identified as the reasons behind the feat. PTP Chairman and MMC Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh in his statement remarked that the latest achievement is testament to PTP’s commitment in providing best in class service for our customers. “As Malaysia’s leading ports & logistics operators, we take pride in our ability to anticipate and understand the needs of our customers as well as our agility

to adapt to the changes of the industries that we operate in, in order for us to stay ahead.” “As such, we are very proud of this significant milestone as it is only made possible by the passion and commitment of our employees and all parties involved. PTP will build on our performance and deliver the service levels and productivity required to meet the demand of our customers and stakeholders,” Che Khalib added. PTP Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen comments that despite the robust conditions, PTP continues to witness a steady volume growth by delivering high efficiency in productivity and competitiveness. “ Various continuous investment and improvement activities have been successfully executed and are currently taking place to ensure that we are able to achieve our target set forth for this financial year, and more importantly to safeguard PTP’s position amongst the top transhipment hub in the world,” he added. Keith Svendsen, Chief Operating Officer of APM Terminals explains that the record load is the

result of outstanding dedication and full focus from everyone to set up the right operational conditions. “The record-breaking load marks a sign of strategic progress for Maersk. This record on most loaded containers during a port stay is one of many illustrations showing that APM Terminals is well-positioned to become a company of operators who are proud, passionate and world-class at servicing our clients.

Our hubs are currently breaking existing productivity records. Port of Tanjung Pelepas is one of the hub terminals where productivity is currently high,” said Keith Svendsen. PTP is currently embarking on an ongoing equipment acquisition, preventive maintenance initiatives and infrastructure upgrading programme worth over RM1.2 billion. The programme includes

the purchase of new quay cranes with spreaders, rubber-tyred gantries and prime movers, berth upgrading and the deepening of channel to accommodate the new generation of mega vessel that will berth at PTP. PTP recorded a total throughput volume of 8.4 Million TEUs in 2017 and is projected to handle a total throughput target of 9 Million TEUs this year.

MO N T H LY DR I L L w Intervie by the Editor

Director

The birth of Gunung Impian goes back to 1991 when Kuok Brothers Sdn Bhd entered a joint-venture with Lee Rubber Co (Pte) Ltd, Selat (Pte) Ltd, Lee Foundation and Senja Permai Sdn. Bhd. to undertake the development of 2,953 acres of freehold land into an integrated commercial, residential and light industrial area. Local boy, Koh Moo Hing has been with Gunung Impian since 2016 and has helped steer the township with his experience of being in the property industry for over 27 years.

What sets Taman Impian Emas apart from other developments?

Taman Impian Emas is an integrated township, located in the central of Iskandar Malaysia. It is well accessed by not only major highways (North South Highway, Skudai Highway, EDL, Pasir Gudang Highway), but also the upcoming double track commuter which is in the pipeline by the State and Federal Governments’ development plan. Given its size of 2953 acres of land, the potential and future planning of the overall self-sustainable layout will further enhance Taman Impian Emas to be the state of art’s self-sustainable township in Johor and Johor Bahru in particular.

What type of properties products are available in Taman Impian Emas?

In Taman Impian Emas, we have developed 5,000 units of properties comprising of single storey terrace, double storey terrace, double storey semi-detached houses, bungalows, shop offices and light industrial properties (terraced factories and semi-detached factories).

Koh Moo Hing

the key word I suppose. Therefore, a wellplanned gated and guarded security system and good accessibility and self-sustainable township which include the amenities that are needed by its residents are key factors. Most of the house buyers will consider the safety factor and of how convenient is it for one to travel to work and back to home daily or even spending less time to commute even during the weekends. These factors will usually interest home owners to stay within the township due to convenience and safety.

state government in providing more decent housing to the needy group. Currently the company is in the process of constructing 444 units of Rumah Mampu Milik and it’s scheduled to be completed in 2 years’ time. Meanwhile, we’re planning for more affordable housing units and it will be constructed in accordance to the programme planned under the advised and consultation with the State Government.

Kindly share some upcoming launches you have in the pipeline

I exercise and read! As everyone knows, exercise will not only make one healthier physically but mentally too. And for me, mental health is far more important than physical health for reasons that I believe; our mind dictates the actions that we take. So a positive mind is of paramount importance. Exercise can divert your mind from being trapped in a specific issue and unlock your mind for receiving new inputs. Reading can also improve our knowledge in other fields that we are not familiar with. For example, in order to respond or resolve an issue, we can seek knowledge from different sources to enhance our ability to understand the issue first before responding with quality facts and resolving it in the best or better way.

Our next upcoming launches are the New Precinct Iconia Garden Residence, double storey terraces and shopoffices that are located near our proposed Community Hub. The proposed Community Hub is in planning stage and we target to open its doors in 2 years’ time which will provide residents with new amenities and facilities.

Impian Emas has 2 big parks for its residents, what other amenities are available?

Impian Emas will capitalise on these 2 big parks (with total land area of approximately 70 acres) as there are plans to introduce a Community Hub in between and connect it to these 2 big parks, transforming the whole area to becoming a first of its kind leisure & recreational Community Hub. Other existing amenities include the Wet market, SRJK(C) Thai Hong, National Primary School, National Secondary School, Southern University College and a 9-Hole Golf Course.

In your experience, what makes a township sellable?

communicate with stakeholders. Most of the people we talked to are feeling great on the so-called formation of new Malaysia. Personally I share the same feeling of good sentiments on the property market simply because looking at the population trend, property especially landed housing properties are still in demand if the price tag and location are right.

Do you the think the upcoming Sales and Service Tax (SST) will have an impact on the market?

Based on what we have gathered from the announcement made by the ministers, it shouldn’t have much impact on the market.

What is your take on affordable housing and what are your initiatives in support of it?

How is the property market doing post GE14?

Yet to really experience the great impact but the atmosphere is positive when we

A

s many as 250 Sunway volunteers from around Johor gathered at Sunway International School’s multipurpose hall in Sunway Iskandar for a three-hour food packing marathon in an attempt to pack a total of 80,000 meals. This marks the third installment of the five-part #sunwayforgood Rise Against Hunger meal packing initiative, that aims to end hunger in the most undernourished communities. “As the team in Sunway Iskandar continues to build our community in Johor, we will continue to drive the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable

Development Goals) throughout the region. Addressing hunger is fundamental as it then improves our chances of combatting poverty, disease, education and the welfare of women and children,” said CEO of Sunway Iskandar, Gerard Soosay. Volunteers formed 14 lines in the hall to pack specially formulated nutrition-dense dehydrated meals including a flavouring mix of 23 essential vitamins and minerals. This five part initiative will see as many as 1630 Sunway Group volunteers pack a total of 500,000 meals across the country in five different locations - 100,000 in Sunway Lost World Hotel in Ipoh, 100,000 Sunway Hotel Seberang

Jaya Penang, and the Group aims to pack 1 million meals by the end of the year. “We believe that the world has enough production potential and distribution capability to end hunger in 2030. We are thankful to Sunway for helping us grow the movement by creating educated advocates and volunteers who are mobilising even more resources towards these proven poverty solutions,” said President of Rise Against Hunger, Tiki Keh. 250,000 of these meals will be distributed to the most povertystricken communities in Malaysia, 100,000 meals will be delivered to homeless shelters and orphanages

A New Coalition of NGOs to Push for a Better Johor Forum Masyarakat Johor consists of committed NGOs and NGIs who are passionate to contribute to the development of the state

F

orum Masyarakat Johor (FMJ) had announced its establishment here at South Johor Chinese Press Club on 6th August 2018. Inspired by Penang Forum which was established in 2008, FMJ aims to serve the people of Johor by focusing on the three key principles of good governance, social inclusion and sustainable development. “We are not talking about online chat place but about a place where NGOs and individuals can come and share ideas that is good for the city or the state,” said activist Thomas Fann during the press conference. Currently there are 25 NGOs and 6 NGIs registered under FMJ and they are organised into 8 clusters focused on various key issues. They believe that their collective expertise and experiences can be shared with the relevant State Excos,

departments and agencies. Once a month each cluster will hold a forum or activity. The eight clusters are good governance, woman children and family, minority rights, education, environment, art, culture heritage, sustainable development and harmony. “We (FMJ) wants to engage with local authority so that they are more responsive and accountable.” said Thomas. FMJ welcomes NGOs and NGIs to be part of them with a yearly membership fee at RM100. They are expecting 100 members to join them by the end of the year. Thomas also highlighted that FMJ does not have a leadership structure such as chairman, secretary and treasurer. Currently he plays the role as the coordinator of secretariat which administers FMJ. In term of decision making, he said, it will be purely based on simple

majority where all members are given one vote to decide. He also said that FMJ members and those who are interested to join them must agree to uphold the Federal Constitution, agree to the value of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to align with United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “FMJ will not be registered for the first year. After one year when we are clearer on our direction and also the membership, we will consider registration under the Registry of Societies or Companies Commission of Malaysia,” said Thomas when asked on the legal status of FMJ. Currently they are exercising their right under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution; the freedom to form association. - by Nurfarahin Zahiridin TI

More than 250 Sunway Staff and Sunway International School students participated in Rise Against Hunger- Meal Packing Session. The team managed to pack 80,000 meals in less than 3 hours

‘Buyer-Meet-Seller’ by Tourism Johor Facilitating commerce and industries in the region with support from the state government

T

he rising popularity of Johor as the chosen destination for tourists and visitors, were the main reason of the Buyer-MeetSeller programme. Johor as one of the two gateways to our country, recorded 14.4 million entries by tourists and visitors in 2017. Indonesian citizens were the second largest contributor to these entries, just behind Singaporeans. Johor Tourism received with open arms, a Fam Trip Visit from ASITA Sumatera Barat Indonesia with 27 committee members, led by Solahuddin Nasution, the Chief of ASITA Sumatera Barat Indonesia. ASITA Sumatera Barat also known as Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies, gathered travel agencies from West Sumatera to form partnerships with other countries. “Tourism is one of the medium for us to foster good

relationships between two countries, not only to contribute to the country’s economic growth, but also indirectly be able to open the eyes of the world to recognise the diversity of cultures, races, religions and the uniqueness of the social demographics of a country more closely and clearly,” said Deputy Director of Johor Tourism, Muhammad Amirul Ardy Abdul Rahim during his opening speech. “These Fam-Trips help the travel industry of both countries to unite and establish a cooperative relationship,” added Amirul. He also wished that the good relationship between Johor Tourism and ASITA Sumatera Barat will always be maintained, continued and enhanced in the future. The ‘Buyer Meet Seller’ programme was also attended by hoteliers, homestay owners, hospitals and other travel industries in Johor. - by Rose Natasha TI

Grieving Together – What to Expect? – Part 1

eath happens every moment and it is inevitable. On the spiritual level, death takes place when the cycle of life ends. It can be the experiences that no longer serve us or a relationship that we don’t even remember anymore. All this subtle death may (or may not) come with a small amount of grief that may not affect our relationship until we are hit with a death of a family member. If you and your loved ones experience the death of people you know, first things to expect are grief and traumas. The behaviour that you or your loved ones are experiencing is made up by grief. A relationship that is surrounded by grief will be

challenged in many ways. To keep the relationship healthy throughout the grieving period, one must expect these outcomes. Expect physical changes and potential illness Maps of Consciousness, produced by David. R Hawkins, MD., Ph.D*; states that grief weakens our body. When the body is weak, illnesses are likely to happen. A grief that is not consciously treated would probably cause hard work in our immune system. People who experience grief state that it affects their breathing. Flu-like illnesses are common during the grieving period. Your sex drive may also be affected too. All of these are

signs that the body is weakened and adapting to the loss. Treating grief consciously requires a high level of awareness and spirituality. Although the body would probably experience weakness, it may not cause great damage to the system and to the relationship. If you and your loved ones begin to feel ill during the grieving period, give each other support; emotionally, mentally and physically. Understand grief could help us maintain the bonding we have with others. In the next issue, we are going to explore the other two changes that we may expect during the mourning period. *Source – The Book Power Vs Force. TI

vegetarian diet is a diet that includes only food from plant sources with or without dairy products and eggs. A well planned and nutritionally balanced plant-based diet confers several health benefits for prevention and management of certain diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity. But done the wrong way, it can actually lead to weight gain and exacerbate existing health conditions. Avoid the following faux pas in order to reap benefits from a plant-based diet. Mistake 1: Assuming commercial vegetarian dishes are healthier Commercial vegetarian food products (e.g. vegetarian fried bee hoon, mock meat) are often highly processed and can be higher in calorie, saturated fat and sodium (no thanks to the

Mistake 2: Overloading on commercial fruit juice or smoothies Commercial fruit juice or smoothies can end up to be calorie bombs due to their high sugar contents. A cup of fruit juice (250ml) easily contains 150kcal while a cup of smoothie packs between 250400kcal. Commercial fruit juice or smoothies is also devoid of dietary fibre which lowers our blood cholesterol level and keeps hunger at bay. Vegetarians need to include a variety of plant proteins (e.g. soy products, legumes, nuts) in their daily diets as plant proteins are ‘incomplete proteins’ and are not as well absorbed as compared to animal proteins. Healthier Option: Include plant proteins at every meal/snack to ensure you are getting adequate protein in your diet. Mistake 4: Not taking enough calcium-rich food Calcium is important for keeping our bones strong and for nervous system function. Vegetarians who avoid dairy products should include calcium rich plant sources (e.g. green leafy vegetables, almonds and figs) and calcium fortified products (e.g. calcium fortified bread, calcium fortified soy products). If necessary, you may require calcium supplements to prevent calcium deficiency. A well planned and nutritionally balanced vegetarian diet confers several health benefits. ohor is one of the few states that has a viable population of dugongs. Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are marine mammals in the family Sirenia. They need to breathe oxygen just like any other mammal and feed on seagrass. Dugongs used to be common in Sungai Johor but are now rarely seen there. Today there is a population of about 20-30 dugongs in the Sibu-Tinggi group of islands, where scientists from University Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaya have been studying them and their habitats since 2005. In Iskandar Malaysia, dugongs can be found in the Sungai Pulai Estuary where Kelab Alami has been monitoring

them since 2008. Research funding from the Johor Port Authority (JPA) allows Kelab Alami to conduct a study of dugong feeding trails and other species in this area so that they can work with the local authorities and JPA to protect them and their coastal habitats. Dugongs can live up to 70 years and can grow to more than 3 meters. Several dugongs have been found dead in Mukim Tg Kupang in the past, mostly young babies. Dugongs are threatened by loss of habitat and accidents with boats and fishing nets. Sometimes they are hunted for food or for symbols of luck (their tusks). Some believe that their tears can be made into love potions!

On the global front, while the trade war tension appeared to have receded, suddenly the US proposed a higher tariff of 25% on US$200 billion worth of Chinese imports, causing some knee jerk reactions to the market. However, investors somehow digested this news quicker, as the market was soon stabilised. A few days later, stocks slipped again as financial crisis in Turkey sent its currency tumbling; dampening investors’ sentiment again. However, the market recovered in a day and focused on the earning season. With better market sentiment showed in both local and global level, should we see some improvements for our portfolio? The answer is clear: As we can see from our portfolio, there is a gain of 245% since November 2015. This is a huge improvement as compared to 195% a month ago. If you invested in the last few months during bad times, you are now sitting on 10-15% profits easily. So, if there were any lessons to learn from the trend change lately, what would they be? 1) Buy on valuation When the whole market corrects, many stock prices will fall. In the first half of 2018, the correction was sharp enough to have some counters’ good valuation surface. For example, a few technology companies’ PE ratio was even hit 15 or lower, which is considered low in technology sector. 2) Invest A few months back, the sentiment was so bad that someone even predicted that it was the beginning of the financial crisis. With that perception in mind, some investors stayed away from the market and because of that, they did not know the market condition. Sooner, the market rebound and the trend changed, and they missed the boat. Therefore, my point is, no one could predict when the next financial crisis is. In order to become a better investor, one should keep investing even during bad times. Of course,

one needs to know the company’s prospect well and manage risks. For example, if you can look for low risk (attractive valuation) and high return (fundamentals and prospect remain sound) scenario, your chances of winning would be higher. 3) Timing helps Even though good valuation has surfaced, very few dare to buy when the share price keeps falling, as the low can go lower. So, in order to enter a trade more comfortably, one can refer to technical indication. Generally, a better timing is when the downtrend reverses, or uptrend starts especially when the share price has moved above the Moving Average 50 (MA50) or Moving Average 200 (MA200) line. Due to many illustrations required, I cannot explain every detail here. Therefore, I encourage you to attend a course on technical analysis or do some studies on this subject. My experience tells me that if you buy fundamentally sound companies with good valuation and are technically uptrend, your chances of winning would be much higher. In other words, when the fundamental is in sync with its technical, then it’s a strong buy. 4) Market is like a Cycle Do realise that the stock market operates like a cycle. In other words, the market will not go up forever nor will it go down without stopping as the market goes up and down like a cycle, be it big or small. I am not asking you to invest lots of money when the market is bad, but if it has been going down for six months like the first half of 2018, do you think the market would have higher chance to come back if the economy condition still looks ok, plus the companies’ earning prospect remains bright? Conclusion Always turn on our learning mode and keep on investing. If we can always be reflective and ‘earn’ the lessons regardless of market direction, we’d eventually earn from the market. TI

Lendi got this opportunity when he submitted a design for his participation in the LEGO IDEAS set creator exercise. With the setting sun casting long shadows across Tropique’s dining hall on level 2, our starters comprising Irish Oysters, Sashimi Crudo and Pan-seared Foie Gras on Toast are enough to whet any appetites. Much effort has also gone into the plating and presentation of our main course, but among the many dishes we were served, the marbled Australian Beef Tenderloin, Halibut and grilled Salmon Collar stood out for their flavour profile and the balance of heavy and light textures. The Chocolate Delice is another notable dish from their new menu that's sweet to end the meal with, and we love how the rich chocolate and coffee taste blends together with each mouthful, along with the zing of spicy chilli from the chocolate sauce and crackling!

spirit of Nanyang coffee shops in the 1960-1970s. Freddie Lee, Executive Director of UML Lifestyle, commented that, “Toast Box has opened its first store in Zenith Lifestyle Centre under the

partnership between BreadTalk Pte Ltd and UML Lifestyle Sdn Bhd. UML Lifestyle is the F&B arm of UMLand Group which has been created to diversify beyond the group’s core business and it is also the Master Franchisee for both Toast Box and BreadTalk Malaysia. He also added that, “On top of the signature products offered in Singapore, Toast Box at Zenith Lifestyle Centre also

The outlet is also committed to infuse fun, passion, and vibrancy to create a new lifestyle experience in Zenith. Customers can now experience its latest store design – “Nostalgic Homes”. The “Nostalgic Homes” concept was inspired by the love for the homes of the 60s – 70s, a significant era of change from Kampung to Public housing; where the people embrace fresh experiences and forge new relationships. The use of mosaic tiles, window grilles, colours and

repeated patterns are specially handpicked to bring flashbacks of those days. This nostalgia is further enhanced with décor that represents different lifestyles of that period. We hope to extend the warmth of this kampung spirit and the fostering of more relationships at Toast Box. Known for its authentic Nanyang coffee, toasts and Asian food, Toast Box at Zenith serves up traditional favourites like peanut butter thick toast, kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs. - by The Iskandarian TI
