KRAFTWERK

TWO INIMITABLE MUSICAL ACTS LIVE ON IN NEW MEDIA. SEE GERMAN ELECTRO IN 3D AND BEASTIE BOYS IN APPLE-VISION

2020 marks 50 years of a “robot pop” pioneer. Fashion’s favorite DJ-producer sounds off. I remember my first time seeing Kraftwerk perfectly: It was September of 1981, at Espace Cardin, Pierre Cardin’s venue in Paris. It wasn’t a large crowd so I was very close to the stage, and I was [in awe] of the band’s robotic movements. They didn’t have the actual robots with them [as they did in their 1978 music video, “The Robots”], but it was super impressive to see all of their precision. I liked the fact that it was mechanical and very futuristic— quintessentially German. Soon after seeing Kraftwerk in Paris, I was out one night in New York, at the Paradise Garage. I saw all of these [American] kids dancing to “Numbers.” Which was crazy to see, because the lyrics of that song are entirely in German. But that didn’t matter: The kids were getting down on the sound. It was the beginning of a type of music in America—not even electro, necessarily. [On “Planet Rock,” for example], the rapper Afrika Bambaataa took inspiration from Kraftwerk. From then on, their

style of beats could be heard throughout hip-hop. To me, Kraftwerk is the perfect example of a crossover: They’re able to travel from one world to another, but always with a theme that’s been pushed to the maximum. That is probably why the band has been so influential in fashion. And what [motivated] me to include them in the soundtrack for two fashion shows one season: Sacai and Chanel, [Fall 2017]. That year, Chanel simulated a rocket launch [at the Grand Palais]; I thought “Radioactivity,” which was a mega-big hit for Kraftwerk [in 1976], was a good laboratory-like accompaniment to that out-of-this-world set. [A great example] of their influence is, of course, Raf Simons’s [Fall/Winter 1998] show, which I saw. The models wore red shirts and black ties, just like the classic Kraftwerk “robots.” I love when fashion takes inspiration from music—it really adds another dimension to both of the [creators’] legacies. And Raf’s Kraftwerk-inspired collection was great, too; I’d wear it today, if I could. MICHEL GAUBERT Kraftwerk’s 3D Concert Tour begins June 19

BEASTIE BOYS The boys are back in a new documentary for Apple TV+. In Beastie Boys Story, streaming April 24 and directed by friend of the band Spike Jonze, the two living members—Adam “Ad Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond—are reunited with the late Adam “MCA” Yauch through archival clips and stagecraft by Jonze. Adapted from a live show and book of the same name, Story is a cinematic synthesis of the two, tracing the boys’ rise from garage-rap renegades to respected industry titans. Before they were stars, Adam H., Michael, and Adam Y. were three teens, rollicking around the New York punk scene of the 1980s. As upstart performers, they were a novelty act—Run DMC meets the Marx Brothers. With their debut LP License To Ill, the unlikely MCs hit pay dirt; “Fight For Your Right (to Party),” though frat-guy satire, was also a banger. There’s no Icarus-like narrative here, but rather one that evokes three schoolmates getting bar mitzvahed. Still, the backstory reveals that the bigger they got, the more the joke got away. After struggling to deliver a follow-up record on time, Def

Jam cut the group loose. The heady Paul’s Boutique, released on Capitol Records, bombed. Still, the making of it provides primo doc fodder. We see the boys re-engineer their sound—channeling their New York breeding through punk, rap, and dub reggae. We see them base business decisions on inside jokes, from hiring a manager because he also worked with Lionel Richie, to blowing the advance from Boutique on a Hollywood Hills mansion, complete with a pool and 1970s-style grotto. They’re adult men by this point, but to watch them live, work and dick around together is a teenage dream. Throughout, Yauch, a sensitive punk who became unnerved by the excesses of their public personas, provides the film’s emotional and artistic core. He also did the most to ensure that, as the boys grew up, they didn’t grow apart. And while his untimely death cut that bond short, watching him offers a catharsis. Have you ever seen a Beastie Boy cry? Watch Story and try not to do the same. MOLLY LAMBERT APPLE TV+ drops Beastie Boys Story on April 24 19

SKETCHING WITH JEAN-PAUL GOUDE

NOAH LUIS BROWN

A spontaneous sketch becomes a work of photorealistic fantasy in a snap. Such is the experience of flicking through this new survey of photographer Jean-Paul Goude. The Chanelcentric book offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Goude’s process, from blueprint to global campaign. SAMUEL ANDERSON Goude: The Chanel Sketchbooks is available now from Thames & Hudson

“I’m from Basel, a small, very art- and agricultureinfluenced city in Switzerland. I still live there, and recently moved into my first apartment. For a small city like ours, we have many cultural attractions. Not to mention the nature, which is incredible and seemingly endless. The youth-culture scene is also strong, but after 7:00 pm the streets are dead. My father is originally from Cuba, which is definitely a great summer destination. But there are so many beautiful places in the world. I can’t single out one that I’d most want to visit.”

PARKER VAN NOORD

“Last summer, I went on a trip to Peru with my longtime university friends. I left Amsterdam with a backpack, two pairs of jeans, film cameras, and no plan. We started our trip way up north, right at the shore in a place called Los Organos. It was like traveling back in time, and the people were just so sweet. We rented a car and slowly descended south. In Cusco, we heard about this really cool trail, the Salkantay trek, which takes you from Cusco to Machu Picchu. It’s five days of hiking through the Andes and the Amazon jungle, and you sleep in really basic tent camps. It was three weeks of freewheeling [amid] Peruvian culture. I have never really felt so free, and I think that’s what a dream destination [is all about]: exploring places and discovering cultures.”

This summer, actor Vincent Cassel returns to the streets of mid-’90s Paris—the setting of La Haine, his breakout film about a gang of workwear-clad revolutionaries. A cause célèbre at Cannes ’95, and a still-referenced document of youth in revolt, La Haine is back on screens for its 25th anniversary. In restored B&W, it’s sure to resonate anew. HERMÈS’S NEW LOOK In sourcing lipstick inspo, Hermès’s newly launched cosmetics division had 75,000 silk swatches at their disposal—an unsurprising figure given the company’s 180-year history of mixing and matching in one form or another. Though the line’s flagship shade may be Orange Boîte, a semisolid copy of the iconic Hermès gift box, its refillable case means you can easily test out all 24. “Sky High Farm is my favorite place in every season, but particularly during the summer, when the gardens are most active and the baby animals are most abundant. We are committed to addressing food security and nutrition for New York, and improving access to fresh food to those living in underserved communities; we sustainably grow fresh fruits and vegetables and raise livestock exclusively for the purposes of donation. Spending time on the farm allows for a unique balance between giving and receiving.”

Of launching his CDG-cosigned clothing line, photog-turned-designer Eli Russell Linnetz says, “I had been working so much for other people. I wanted [a project] that actually made me happy.” Linnetz, known for creating Lady Gaga’s trancepoppy “Enigma” imagery, is idiosyncratic as ever within a wearable medium: “Mel Ottenberg saw our [ombré neon] belt and said, ‘That’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen!’ I go, ‘We have to make them!’” SA ERL is available at Dover Street Market New York

I see myself playing a baby grand piano in the sand, topless with a thong bikini [bottom], while staring into the eyes of my love (who’s laying upon the piano in her thong bikini) while we spout salty ocean water back and forth into each other’s mouths…[Lastly], in this vision, there is also a yacht.” 21

JUDAH LANG Betty Judah Lang is the kind of New York City kid who, in elementary school, befriended the neighborhood halal guy. “He would give me free donuts,” Lang says with a laugh. By his late teens, Lang’s self-described “philosophical SoundCloud rap,” wherein he namedrops historical figures like Catherine the Great in lieu of luxury watches and cars, had earned him a Times write-up. “[I] ended up doing my own thing pretty quickly,” he says. But as he cultivated that inarguably cool oeuvre outside of school, Lang was also drawn to a certain historically uncool elective: “I had an amazing improv teacher in high school,” says Lang. “We had to spend three months as an animal. I was a mouse, so I’d crouch and run super fast, like a cute little deer mouse!” For his role in 2018’s Skate Kitchen, Crystal Moselle’s Sundance standout, Lang was back in default heartthrob-skater mode. “I just chopped it up with them and smoked Newports,” he says, referring to the film’s ensemble cast of teen skaters. “They were trying to see if I was someone they would want to hang out with on set.” He evidently passed the test, seeing as Moselle brought Lang back for the forthcoming spin-off series, Betty. Set to hit HBO this summer, the show allowed Lang to showcase both his skating chops and his improv training. Of the loosely scripted series, in which he plays the love interest, Lang says, “Scripts are great, but you have a lot more fun by not closely binding yourself to what somebody wrote in an office a million years ago.” DEVIN BARRETT

CIARA BRAVO Cherry Ciara Bravo’s life is nothing like the movie A Star Is Born. Well, almost nothing. For one, she is on the cusp of stardom, thanks to a forthcoming lead role in the timely opioid drama Cherry, opposite Tom Holland. Also worth noting is the fact that her family back home, like in the movie, runs a limo service. Though the service-industry profession signifies Ally’s 20-feet-from-fame status, for Bravo, it was a point of pride. “It was great!” she says. “For family gatherings, everyone would pull up in their black Cadillacs. We looked like a mob convention!” If her family’s limo biz was something of a curiosity, so was Bravo’s acting career. Early on, a role in a Natasha Bedingfield music video led to a day of awkward classroom reckoning. “It was the 26

first thing that I had ever done,” Bravo recalls. “When I went back to school, my teacher had found [the video] online. She played it on a big screen for my whole English class, and paused it on my face!” As the lead in Cherry, sure to be one of this year’s most trenchant romances, Bravo’s child-actor phase is officially behind her. By now, she’s learned to embrace the growing pains—awkward moments and all. “When I [auditioned], I thought, There is absolutely no way I am booking this,” she says of the film, which follows an army medic-turned-bank robber. “I put my heart and soul into it, and moved on. So when I got a text a couple weeks later, like, ‘Are you available to talk...?’ I thought my agent was about to fire me!” SAMUEL ANDERSON

This summer, multi-time Tony nominee Jeremy Pope makes his TV debut in Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood. Though the Netflix series marks a big break for the 27-year-old, the significance goes beyond Pope himself. “It’s bigger than just me,” he says. “I feel like I’m paving the way for people behind me and in front of me.” Amid gauzy, post-war Tinseltown, Pope’s character reflects the not-sobygone reality of industry inequity. “It’s this idea of, ‘What if?’” explains Pope. “What if we’d had more opportunities? How different it could have been?” Born in Orlando, Pope discovered theater in high school. Though his first major part was in the 2018 grindhouse flick The Ranger, his own storytelling tastes align with Murphy’s: highly carbonated drama, with touches of sincerity. “Our show has a dreamer’s heartbeat; it’s about people willing to do whatever it takes,” he says. Portraying a ’50s-era dreamer like Archie led Pope to re-examine his own flight path: Upon moving to New York, he says he questioned whether or not the industry would make space for him. “You get discouraged: Broadway and TV shapes our ideas, and I wasn’t seeing myself [represented] as often as I would’ve liked.” Pope’s staggering trajectory, which in 2019 included scooping double nominations at the Tony’s—suggests the industry never had much of a choice. On Hollywood, Pope continues to expand what representation can look like—namely in his character’s nonpareil wardrobe. “I loved Archie’s style,” Pope beams. “It was a cinched waist, plaid shirts and sweater vests, hair always laid. He didn’t have a lot of money, but the boy could dress.” WOLFGANG RUTH Jeremy wears all clothing and accessories Dior Men 27

COREY FOGELMANIS School Spirit Between starring as Diana Silvers’s love interest in the instant classic Ma and menacing classmates in Hulu’s School Spirit, a Breakfast Club-style slasher, Corey Fogelmanis wasn’t missing a beat in the transition from child actor to full-fledged star. But then the 20-year-old decided to pause acting and focus on college in New York. “I want[ed] to have a better understanding of the world, how people and society operate, so that I could individually be a better person,” he explains. One thing he’s learned: Actors are an unusually emotional breed. “I grew up on sets, where we talk about how we feel,” says Fogelmanis, a Girl Meets World regular from ’14 to ’17. “I’m learning not everyone is like that! And to think before I speak, so I don’t make people uncomfortable...” Not that he’s only spent time in the rarefied company of actors. In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, his mind has drifted to his home in L.A.— and to his feathered friends there, in particular. “I feel like going home and petting my chickens,” he says. “They know our voices, so when we go into the backyard, they all come running. I miss them!” If said outbreak is an indication, Fogelmanis picked a good time to focus on life’s fundamentals. “To drop [acting] and move to New York...I know people were like ‘Okay, are you sure?’” he reflects. “I am [still] finding a balance, but my main priority is getting an education.” MATHIAS ROSENZWEIG Corey wears All clothing Giorgio Armani Shoes Giuseppe Zanotti Watch Omega

MONICA BARBARO Top Gun: Maverick Male-dominated institutions like the one at the center of the Top Gun movie franchise are notorious for grading on a curve. So one might assume that Monica Barbaro, who plays the lone female fighter pilot in this year’s Top Gun: Maverick, felt an added pressure even offscreen. But during an intense preproduction boot camp, the NorCal native’s edge became clear: “I never threw up!” she says, referring to a not-uncommon side effect among her male counterparts. Despite the year-long shoot requiring 35 hours of actual flight, per star and producer Tom Cruise’s emphasis on non-simulated dare-devilry, Barbaro remained dauntless. “It wasn’t scary,” she says. “I didn’t have any fear.” Which is not to say that she didn’t over-prepare—namely for the possibility of (gulp) an emergency ejection. “I did extra swim training because I was worried! I swam every other day for two months,” she says. The Top Gun squad was long overdue for female energy, with Maverick following the original by 34 years. Underscoring the glacial pace of progress is the fact that Barbaro, 29, never expected to play such a role. “I was like, ‘Oh, [I can] play one of the pilots!’ I hadn’t ever considered that to be an option,” she says. Still, she adds, she never let the specter of inequality impede her mission: “My being a woman soon took [a backseat] to just playing a fighter pilot.” SA Monica wears All clothing Versace Jewelry Tiffany & Co. 28

LESLIE GRACE In the Heights

If internationally famous pop artists tend to be out of touch, singer-turned-actress Leslie Grace is a striking exception. Though calling in from Florida to chat about In the Heights, the forthcoming film version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s urban ode, the Bronx-born powerhouse immediately acknowledges the surrounding public-health pandemonium. “How are you taking everything?” she asks. “I’ve seen all my fans up [in New York] prepping, so I’m curious.” About those fans: While In the Heights is Grace’s first real acting gig, she’s been a hot commodity in the Latin-pop ecosystem since her teens. A Grammy nominee who signed her first record deal at 16, she frequently appears alongside

crossovers like J Balvin and Maluma. “I remember the first time I met Maluma,” she recalls. “We were performing on the same Telemundo late night show. We were both babies!” World-renowned pipes aside, Grace projects a harmonious relationship with the universe: Her role as Nina in the film, for example, smacks of predestiny. Though she spent much of her young life in Florida, Grace clocked various parallels between her own upbringing and that of her character, an overachieving beautician’s daughter. “Both my mom and [Nina’s mom] ran salons in the Heights. Her block was their block, basically. It’s crazy how life came around.” SA

“[The men’s Pre-Fall collection] is about focusing on the traditional fitted silhouette of men’s tailoring and creating intrigue within this silhouette. There are signature codes people equate with ‘tradition,’ just like the equivalent exists in what’s popularly defined as ‘streetwear.’ We’re using our creative freedom to experiment with the traditional codes of Louis Vuitton.” —Virgil Abloh

“Our philosophy is very much informed by the clothes that people actually wear. As with any tradition, these values are adapted through the passage of time. What we do is an analysis of a generation: What do people buy and why do they wear it? That question is as interested in tradition as it is in changing tradition. It’s about challenging oneself and exploring different lands. That is creative freedom.” —Virgil Abloh 41

CONAN GRAY

HAIM

All-time favorite song-of-the-summer? “Style” by Taylor Swift. Favorite summer blockbuster? The Goonies. Go-to summer beverage? The lemon-berry slush from Sonic. How do you adapt to the warmer weather? I grew up in Texas, so it was always too hot to go outside. I find most summers to be boring, but in the past I’ve adapted by spending my days indoors and writing songs, and then driving around with friends at night. What are you looking forward to most in summer 2020? This summer, I’m looking forward to releasing some bops!

Favorite summer blockbuster? All: Clueless, Jaws, or Boogie Nights. What is the best thing about summer? All: Day drinking. Most memorable summer? Este: The time we played Glastonbury and the European festivals after our first record came out. Danielle: The summer I spent in Venice, Italy. Alana: The summer after graduating high school...I never looked back! Summer survival tip? Este: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Danielle: A bathing suit in your purse at all times. Alana: Don’t sit on your sunglasses.

TINASHE

CARLY RAE JEPSEN

Favorite summer blockbuster? The Notebook. What is the best thing about summer? I love cooking for all of my friends. I have taco Tuesdays at my house! Most memorable summer? Last summer, I had so much fun putting the finishing touches on my album, Songs For You. I have a studio at my house, so I spent almost every day making music and art, being inspired, and having fun. Go-to summer beverage? Frosé. What’s in your summer survival kit? In sunny and dry L.A., moisturizer with SPF and humidifiers are a must!

All-time favorite song of the summer? “Sunshine on My Shoulders” by John Denver. It reminds me of my childhood. I would listen to that record over and over while singing in my backyard hammock. Tell us about one of your most memorable summers. One summer for the books was my solo, three-week trip to Italy. I learned to cook Italian [food], went horseback riding, and walked all over Rome and Venice in vintage dresses I’d found along the way. Go-to summer beverage? Either gin and tonic or a Moscow mule. What’s in your summer survival kit? Colorful clothing and a great, big hat.

DOJA CAT

CHARLOTTE LAWRENCE

All-time favorite song of the summer? “Hot Girl Summer” by Megan Thee Stallion and Ty Dolla $ign. What is the best thing about summer? Well, getting a tan...Even though the heat can suck it. Go-to summer beverage? A lychee martini—at all times, but definitely during the summer. What are you looking forward to most this summer? Just being creative, because I’ve been busy doing a lot of other things. I’m very excited to continue working on my next project.

What’s your all-time favorite song of the summer? “Lisztomania” by Phoenix. Most memorable summer? Every summer that I’m able to travel is memorable. One year my best friend, Talita, and I traveled all around France and Greece, exploring cities and oceans. It was magical. What is the best thing about summer? In California, it’s the weather! Being able to swim in the Pacific without freezing your ass off is a treat. Go-to beverage? Milkshakes. What’s in your summer survival kit? Hmm, I’d say my survival kit consists of my passport, bikinis, a sunhat, a book that I love, a bottle of rosé, and ChapStick.

PERFUME GENIUS STAYS ON BEAT, ROCKING THE SUMMER’S HOTTEST TIMEPIECE Photography Tate Justas Fashion Miso Dam

Who better to embody our object-driven desire than Perfume Genius? The alias of musician Mike Hadreas conjures something ineffable yet potent, its mystery part of its allure. If Hadreas seemed untouchable behind the emo-pop poetry of albums one through four, he’s putting it all out there now: The video for “Describe,” off his new LP Set My Heart on Fire Immediately, saw Hadreas lead a spiritualizing routine of bare-chested choreography. To ensure he’s staying in the groove, we paired him with a soulful Tom Ford time-keeper. The combination will set hearts aflame—immediately. SAMUEL ANDERSON
