Japan on Vaccines by:Carlos Villalba

Unused COVID-19 vaccines in Japan are set to reach tens of millions of doses. About a month left to the Tokyo Olympics cases are still going up and almost anybody has not gotten the vaccine. Japan imported 28 million doses of Pfizer last April but only used about 15 percent and the rest are just sitting on the freezers.

The Japanese government is planning to open large vaccination centers in Tokyo and Osaka in the upcoming weeks. It is expected that 10,000 vaccines people in one day.

An online petition called “ Canceled the Tokyo Olympics to save our lives” on 5 May, garnered more than 300,000 signatures in just 4 days. Claiming that still continuing with this plan will lead to more deaths to its citizens. Japan only has 1% of its population has been vaccinated. They are planning to roll out their vaccines this month for the elderly. The next month after this is to vaccinate people under 65. If japan keeps getting worse and not keeping up on their vaccines, the Olympics could be canceled.

Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate and honor all mother’s throughout the world for their maternal love and care for their children. It is celebrated on different days, however most commonly it is celebrated on May 9 in the U.S while in Mexico it is celebrated on May 10th. The holiday originated in the United States by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914 United States President

Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. In the United States it is traditional to give a mother flowers, especially roses or a thoughtful gift made from the heart. A mother is not bound to the typical social norm of society, a mother doesn’t necessarily have to be the person who gave birth to one but rather someone who has nurtured one and given one the warmth of a guardian. A mother can range to being a single father, a friend, a relative, so long as they deem fit of the role. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers around the world!

Is Freedom of Speech Really Free? -June 1st, 2021-

Photo by: Getty Images Background America is one of the few countries that protects Freedom of Speech. The five freedoms guaranteed by the 1st Amendment are speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. Freedom of Speech allows Americans the liberty to speak their minds freely without fear of being censored or persecuted by the government. However, is Freedom of Speech really Free? For example, categories of speech that are given lesser or no protection from the constitution are: perjury, libel, slander, obscenity, pornography, and incitement. The U.S. Supreme Court has often struggled to define

-By Ann Thomas & Karen Aguilarwhat exactly constitutes protected speech. For example, while you do not give up your constitutional rights when you attend school, they must be balanced against the rights of your classmates, as well as the school's obligation to offer a safe atmosphere and a good education. One of the landmark cases the Supreme Court had ruled on is Tinker V. Des Moines. A group of Des Moines students met in 16-year-old Cristopher Eckhardt’s home in December 1965 to prepare for a public demonstration in support of a Vietnam War truce. They agreed to fast on December 16 and New Year's Eve and to wear black armbands during the holiday season. When the Des Moines school principals learned of the plan, they convened on December 14 to develop a policy stating that any kid wearing an armband would be asked to remove it, and if they refused, they would be suspended. On December 16, Mary Beth Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt were sent home for wearing their armbands to school. The next

day, John Tinker tried the same thing and got the same outcome. The students didn't return to school until after New Year's Day, when the protest was supposed to end. The students sued the school district through their parents, alleging that the school system had violated their right to free expression and requested an injunction to prohibit the school system from penalizing them. The district court with a 7-2 majority opinion dismissed the complaint, which determined that the school system's actions were appropriate in upholding school discipline. The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit upheld the ruling. Case Information In 2017, high school freshman, Brandi Levy, made a post on Snapchat in which she said “F- school f- softball fcheer f- everything” after she failed to make it into her

and bullying. However, the Mahanoy Area School District claims that due to the widespread use of social media and online education caused by the pandemic, there is no difference between on-campus speech and speech that is anywhere outside the school. The school’s lawyer explained that speech at school and outside school have the same impacts. Both can be disruptive and they can infringe on other students’ rights. On the other hand, Levy’s lawyer contends that such an argument would allow schools to punish students for any type of reason and further diminish student’s freedom of speech. Plus, the student stated that she did not mean to target anyone in specific. The case reflects the challenge schools have faced to identify what form of speech can be punished. After years of lower courts asking that the Supreme Court clarified the type of student speech that can be disciplined, the Justices will answer the question: Does the First Amendment prohibit public school officials from regulating off-campus speech?

Case Information Cont. school’s varsity cheer team. The post had an audience of about 250 people -many being students at her high school and part of the cheerleader team- which included the daughter of the school’s cheer team who eventually showed the post to her mom, believing it was inappropriate. The coach suspended Levy from the junior varsity team for a year, arguing that she had violated the team and school’s rules. Levy’s parents challenged the school’s punishment, arguing that the school could not suspend their daughter for what she had said because it was off-campus speech. The district court ruled in favor of the student and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled in favor of Levy as well; the federal appeals court explained that the student could only be punished for speech on campus or at school events. Lawyers from both sides of the case concur that schools have the right to discipline students for targeted harassment Photo by: ACLU

Impacts of the Case: If Levy loses this case it will definitely be terrifying for high school students, however, the ones who will feel the brunt of this change will be college students. Every time the Supreme Court has ruled on a First Amendment case affecting K–12 schools, college attorneys have rushed to court to persuade judges to give them the same degree of power. Regardless of how the Supreme Court interprets its decision, Levy's case will establish the bar for adult-age college students for decades. While a 14-year-old might be able to cope with missing a year of extracurricular activities, a 19-year-old may be devastated. The repercussions are even more serious: getting thrown off a sports team may result in the loss of paid college tuition, a place to live, a meal plan, and health insurance. As a result, the Levy case is a must-win for college athletes who need a safe place to talk about racism and sexual assault in their sports programs. It is unclear how the court will rule but it is undeniable that the ruling can have impacts that'll be felt nationwide.
