SCHOOL WITH A HINT OF COVID By Fariha Anwar & Onima Khan After a whole year of lockdown because of the fatal virus COVID-19, schools in California are reopening due to the protesting parents and students for pro-school and the signing of the new law that Governor Gavin Newson has signed for public schools to reopen. What are the opinions of students and teachers who are being sent back to school while a pandemic is still active? What are the protocols and will they work?

Governor Gavin Newson signed a law recently that is pressuring school districts in California to reopen schools for “in-person” learning. Numerous teachers are against this action, claiming that it is still not safe for them and students to get back into a public area for a long time. They demand to get completely vaccinated and will not appear in a classroom until they are. Although the new law focuses on mostly pre- schools and elementary school students to attend indoor classrooms,
middle and high school students are also now being pressured. “This is the right time to safely reopen for in-person instruction," said Newsom when talking to abc7news. Schools are said to open on April 19th 2021. According to LATimes, for elementary school students, school would be every day of the weekdays, from the morning to afternoon while keeping a small number of students in each classroom.
SCHOOL WITH A HINT OF COVID For higher level students, they will be in school alternating from in school to at home, and will be sitting in one classroom the entire time. In the classroom, they will still be doing online learning but now supervised by a teacher. When asking Bravo students for their opinion of online in-school learning, Gisselle Robelto, a senior, said “..I feel it'll be chaotic going back to school figuring out how it's going to work out with laptops and noise canceling earphones.I think it will be the same amount of learning I am having at
home.” She also indicated that if all the teachers and students took the vaccine she would be reassured; which is difficult for California since they are short in COVID-19 vaccinations.
will get an education. The fact that COVID-19 is highly infecting the United States still remains and hospital beds are now 95% occupied in the state of California. What is the best solution for the children's education ?

Covid In March As we all know, this is a very hard time to pass through. Over the past few weeks, the scope of this pandemic has started seeming more controlled. But this is not the time to put our guard down and act like there is not still a pandemic going around. Some useful information that we all should know is that USC have been positioned to help out many of our local communities in need of vaccinations.
Another good thing is that Uber is offering 5,000 free rides with another 20,000 rides at half price for those in need of trips to a vaccine distribution site. Alumni, students, and faculty are helping in the vaccine clinic at Lincoln Park. The Flower Street location, close to public transit stops, welcomes drive-up or walk-up appointments and administers the Moderna vaccine. This another good site where you can get your vaccine to help stop the spread of this pandemic

Women’s History Month By Maimuna Chowdhury
Women’s history month is dedicated to celebrate and appreciate all that women have provided to American Society and culture. It is to reflect on the overlooked contributions of women throughout history like Susan B Anthony and Rosa Parks. It originated in Sonoma California and as more communities caught on to this celebration, President Carter announced March 8th as Women’s History Week. Congress followed the next year with Women’s History Month.
Something even more special to my heart is the Women’s March at City Hall. Having many come across the city to bring

The Green Way of St. Patrick’s Day By: Brandon Martine On March 17, 2021, St, Patrick’s Day is celebrated. The color green, leprechauns, and three leaf clovers are widely associated with this holiday; but why is that?
The Irish holiday is celebrated over the death of St. Patrick, who died on March 17, 461. He was brought into Ireland as a slave at the age of 16, so he sought peace and comfort with Christianity. Converting many Irish to Christianity, he became widely famous for the mythical tale of driving out all the snakes in Ireland. Although it isn’t exactly true, it symbolized his power of removing any non-christian cultures, and eventually his teachings and influence drove Ireland into becoming a christian country.

The World is Facing Two Viruses: COVID-19 and Racism -March 18, 2021-
Photo by: AP Photo/ Damian Dovarganes Introduction: In recent months, there has been an increase in anti-Asian hate witnessed across the country. However, this is nothing new; racist stereotypes and rhetoric against Asian communities go centuries back in the United States. In 1882, the United States passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which barred citizens from China from coming to the country because of widespread beliefs that they were “stealing” people’s jobs. Additionally, this act prevented Chinese Americans from becoming US citizens for years. In later decades, Chinese Americans were targets of racist attacks from San Francisco residents who thought they posed a threat due to
-By Ann Thomas and Karen Aguilarby faulty beliefs that they would support Japan’s war efforts. Lastly, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, unjustified attacks were witnessed against Muslim Americans and South Asians by baseless assumptions that they were not loyal to the U.S. People have continuously attacked these communities based on their religion, ethnicity, and appearance as the nation has normalized this type of behavior. History and precedent are not the only factors that are perpetuating anti-Asian hate; the pandemic and response from the previous administration have also fueled racist attacks against Asian Americans. For example, in the wake of the pandemic, Trump often referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese Virus” and “Kung flu” and even several members of his administration used such stigmatizing nicknames. In turn, the response from Trump’s administration normalized and
encouraged his supporters to use derogatory terms and attack members of the Asian community. Reports of anti-Asian crime increased substantially during the pandemic; according to the organization Stop AAPI Hate, they recorded a 150% increase of anti-Asian crimes in 2020. Members of these communities have reported various incidents in which they were targeted and the following examples are just a few of the thousands of attacks reported.
Stop AAPI Hate is a non-profit social organization that tracks the incidents of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. have reported over 3,800 incidents in the past year against Asians and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. however it seems like the actual number can be higher with the number of cases that go unreported. In recent weeks these are some of the reported attacks: ● An 84-year-old Thai immigrant in San Francisco, California, died last month after being violently shoved to the ground during his morning walk. ● In Oakland, California, a 91-year-old senior was shoved to the pavement from behind. ● An 89-year-old Chinese woman was slapped and

Hate crimes targeting Asian communities are on the rise around the world, with more reports coming from Canada and Human Rights Watch reporting cases of anti-Asian discrimination and xenophobia in Italy, Russia, and Brazil last summer. In New Zealand, according to research released
last month by the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, 54 percent of Chinese respondents have faced discrimination since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and 55 percent of Mauri respondents have faced discrimination since the pandemic began. According to police data from the U.K., hate crimes against Chinese, East, and South East Asians increased by 300 percent in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period in 2018 and 2019. Chinese takeaway owners have reported being spat at and attacked in the U.K. over the last year, and countless others have been victims of violent and racially aggravated street attacks.
Shooting in Atlanta: People continue to say to “wait for the conclusion of the investigation”, however, the fact that six of the eight victims were Asian women speaks louder than the words of the police. The fact that the suspect purposefully targeted three different places in which mostly Asian women worked at, is also something that simply screams hate crime. The media and police have done a poor job of calling these attacks what they are. This is domestic terrorism. This is a hate crime. This is White Supremacy. These hate crimes are not isolated incidents. This country is built upon White supremacy and xenophobia and didn’t appear out of nowhere. Being “fed up,” “end
of their rope” or “having a really Resources ● https://stopaapihate.o bad day” is not a justification or rg/ excuse for a massacre. ● https://a Yet there is some hope that ● nti-asianviolenceresou legislation will deter any more rces.carrd.co anti-Asian hate crimes from taking place. Democrat elected officials plan to introduce a bill in Congress that would address the hate crimes recently reported. The bill would create a position in the Department of Justice that would be in charge of facilitating the revision of hate crime cases related to COVID-19. Activists from organizations such as Asian Americans Advancing Justice are expected to testify before a subcommittee in Congress.
