ATTACK OF THE CAPITOL VERSUS THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT -Date: January 25, 2021-

-By: Fariha Anwar, Onima Khan-

Starting off, there isn’t any comparison between the BLM protests and the attack of the Capitol. The BLM protests were in response to the death of an individual, and an action to fight for equality and human rights. Colored individuals are targeted by the police more than white individuals, and there are statistics that prove this statement. The attack of the capitol was just plain out domestic terrorism, in reaction of a president losing due to an leggitimate election.

The peaceful protestors were blamed for the vandalism that was taking place in the BLM protest. Even in general colored people are more targeted by the police shown in statistics more than white individuals. The National Guard was called right away by President Trump during the BLM movement, however during the attack at the Capitol, the Vice President had to go behind the President’s back to call the National Guard. The President was clearly against calling the national guard.

There is much evidence that points out racism in the police system and in America as a whole. During the Black Lives Matter protest the police used rubber bullets and tear gas to contain the protests including the ones which were peaceful. During the capitol riot there are videos of policemen opening the barriers and allowing protesters in.

Lastly, as a president, Trump held the power to influence many people, and that influence could be negative or positive. During the BLM protests, Trump spread harsh tweets and posts throughout social media, that make the BLM protesters look very bad. But, when it came to break in the Capitol, he laid back and enjoyed the show.

If there were colored people rioting and breaking into the capitol, the reaction would be different from the government and the police system. The videos of the break-in became viral, and people started comparing them to the BLM protest reaction, proving to the world that there is such a thing as favoritism and racism in America. The Kings and a Son By: Brandon Martinez “Dia de los Reyes Magos” which translates to “Three Kings Day” takes place on January 6th of every year. This day is known as the end of the 12 Days of Christmas, which spans from December 25, to January 6. This day is an important day in Latin American Culture, and Christianity as a whole.

The biblical story starts off on December 25, which is widely known as the birth of Jesus.

The Three Kings, BeLatina

The story goes in which three Kings, Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, come from far and wide to bring gifts to commemorate the birth of baby Jesus. Their journey is known as the “12 Days of Christmas”. The 12 days represent the long journey of the three kings, and their official arrival is known as Epiphany, or “Three Kings Day”, which occurs on January 6.

Mexican Rosca In Latin American culture and Spanish culture, Three Kings Day is celebrated by eating a “Rosca de Reyes”, which is bread in the shape of a ring covered in dried fruits. The rosca contains a hidden baby figure inside, and whoever finds it upon receiving their bread, is supposed to make dinner or tamales on February 2nd.

On December 11, 2020 the FDA announced and gave authorization for the covid-19 vaccine, created by Pfizer, to be released for the prevention of coronavirus disease 2019. They determined the vaccine was safe enough for the public since data shows that the potential benefits outweigh the known and potential risks. Though many are unsure whether the vaccine is actually safe because of it’s quick development, the FDA has approved of its safety and recommend it for the public especially if they are at risk for contracting the virus to take it once it becomes available to them. The Pfizer vaccine is administered as a series of

two doses, three weeks apart, though it’s fine as long as one receives the second shot. In California their vaccination plan is allocating COVID-19 vaccines as they become available to ensure fair distribution, though the vaccination was limited to healthcare workers and long-term care residents. The next round will be individuals that have higher risk for severe disease or death, are unable to work at home, live or work in geographic areas that have been highly impacted or are most likely to spread disease to other workers or to the public. When Will the Students Get the Vaccine? It is predicted that students will mostly likely not receive any

vaccination until early summer. This is to have all first line workers, elderly, and people with underlying diseases get vaccinated first. However, the Superintendent of LAUSD, Austin Beutner, has requested for emergency vaccination for teachers and soon after students. So if things go as planned, they are hopeful of having us back by Fall of 2021. It is important to have an optimistic outlook on this vaccination process because there are limited amounts of vaccination and they are trying their best to have everyone to most be vaccinated. It is important to remember even after being vaccinated, you have to wear masks and be socially distanced.

Air Quality Worse by the Day? As wildfires continue, so is the bad air quality for the region. Scientists from prestigious Universities have claimed that they have found toxic plumes of smoke, that can blind the western region and states for weeks if these wildfires start getting worse. Since they are some deaths, when it comes to these wildfires, researchers say that air pollution of these wildfires can be just as deadly. A crazy fact that's been known is that the fine particles known as PM2.5s can decrease a lifespan of a human by 4 months.

The firestorms or wildfires last year in 2020 have been the worst in record history, with 31 people killed and more than 10,000 buildings destroyed. Also, more than 4 acres burned! Just in California. Furthermore, there were some other particles left behind that dropped particles and increased hospitalizations for conditions including strokes, heart attacks, and asthma.

There was a surprising fact about these wildfires, we all know they hit wealthier sides of a community but almost never the low-income communities. This has changed since the wildfires would always hit the low-income areas since there are closer to freeways and factories. The increase in these wildfires is due to hot temperatures and dry conditions. Climate change is getting worse by the day meaning land can catch in flames at any time.

Plenty of days. Fractionated into moments. Episodes into fury abliss, I welcomed often. Triggered from trauma, occurs passionate hate. I feared my loss of defeated opportunity. I focused on the past, lingered in self resentment. A rope I struggled to grasp, to climb in challenge of my abilities, had tied around my neck as I pulsed to end my fate. Awakened by possibility from my shallow depressed end, I escaped from dreading and sought out for every living moment to be my best.
