HEALTH FAIR

Bravo’s Homecoming!

Election Time!

Starting November 13, 2019, ninth graders presented patient care related careers in the annual “Health Fair” hosted in the library. Through their health class, Ms. Cardenas, Mr. Martinez, and Mr. Womack, assigned this project as an opportunity for freshmen to inform members of the community and upperclassmen about their assigned career. The ninth graders researched several aspects of their profession, such as the work environment, pros and cons of the profession, job description, other related careers, the typical salary of these professions, experiences, and educational curriculums necessary to pursue their career. Through their research, the freshmen were able to share their interests and reasons why they might consider pursueing their career while the upperclassmen received the opportunity to critique them as presenters and for their content. The upperclassmen were able to help the growing minds of the freshman in their presentation skills. As they shared their findings to the community members and upperclassmen, the freshman received suggestions on how they can improve for future presentations. Their project gave the freshmen an opportunity to improve as students and presenters. The annual health fair is a turning point for the freshman as they continue to work through their high school journey.

On the early evening of November 8th, 2019, Bravo hosted their sold out homecoming. Prior to the dance, student body presented an immense amount of anticipation towards ticket sales. Leadership had allocated a week for tickets to be sold with the prices varying every few days. Alas, the night came and Bravo’s gym blasted to the past with gold and black decor in order to suit the theme of “The Roaring 20’s.” The entertainment was given from the band, “Bravo Nautics” as well as a dj. California Wildfires By Noemi Pedraza

For the past few weeks, California has been facing wildfire after wildfire. The Getty and Kincade fires have finally been controlled but fierce winds have only ignited more fires throughout the state. Firefighters, even some from local states as well as some inmate volunteers, have been working restlessly to fight these fires.

By: Silvia Lopez

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, these fires could be a result of several reasons. The most obvious reason is Global Warming. The increase in hot weather has made the hills and mountains more likely to burn, increasing the amount of time the fire season will last. California’s famous drought has also been a factor in these fires. The drought causes a high mortality rate among the trees, which help create more kindling for the fires to spark. Similarly, the lack of forest management and proper development of homes plays a huge role since some of the efforts from the forestry services are not sufficient as well as several homes that are built in rural areas, perfect for fires, aren’t properly designed to resist these fires. More recently, the PG & E company has played a role in some fires especially the devastating fires in 2018 due to their lack of proper electrical equipment resulting in electrical fires that only helped the fires spread more. The company this year took several precautions and created intentional blackouts in Northern California, affecting several residents. In Southern California, Edison shut off power to nearly 450,000 people according to NBC News. Several californians were buying generators, gas, and other supplies in order to prepare for these blackouts. Despite the constant coverage of these flames, the 2019 wildfires don’t compare to the devastation caused by the previous year. There were several more fatalities last year and much more devastation. Several residents and celebrities were evacuated but lost homes to the devastating flames. Fortunately, this year, the fatalities were less although some evacuations and closure of schools did exist.

Regarding the Homelessness Epidemic: Where Does California’s Homeless Come From? By: Laura M. Gueta

From the primary causes of people failing to meet California’s growing housing shortage to individuals losing their jobs, there is no doubt that homelessness has been a mainstream conflict for Californians. But a rising question has caused researchers to wonder if the homeless population consists of California residents or if the population mostly includes out of state individuals. As a result, The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), recently added to their homeless survey: the amount of time a person has lived in Los Angeles, and when they became homeless. The study revealed that people lacking housing are most definitely Californias, executive director of LAHSA. Peter Lynn commented, “This is a local crisis and a homegrown problem.” Specifically, LAHSA’s 2019 homeless count found that of 58,936 Los Angeles homeless population, about 64 percent had lived in the city for more than ten years while less than 18 percent confessed that they had lived out of the state before becoming homeless. Similarly, in San Francisco, about 43% of their homeless inhabitants had lived in the city for more than ten years. For all that, the LAHSA’s data undermined the widespread belief that California’s homeless population mostly consisted of people from out of state. Thus, the many individuals facing homelessness today were once perhaps members of local communities.

The U.S placed a $25,000 million bounty for his capture due to his constant disappearances and unconfirmed sightings. His constant hiding did not last. The videos that the Pentagon released captures the aerial strikes done by US F-15 fighter jets and MQ-9 Reaper Drones. The raid lasted about two hours, but ended in a islamic defeat. Trump considers Bagghadi’s death ironic. He states that Bagghadi “died like a dog.” He remarks that Baghdadi Constant terrorizing incidents brought upon his own terror in his last moments during the ambush. Trump said, “He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming. The compound had been cleared by this time, with people either surrendering or being shot and killed. Eleven young children were moved out of the house un-injured. The only ones remaining were Baghdadi in the tunnel, who had dragged three children with him to certain death. He reached the end of the tunnel, as our dogs chased him down. He ignited his vest, killing himself and the three children. Conan The Hero Dog By Hermes Agustin Jr.

Throughout history, mankind has experience in the form of heroism; small acts to enormous impacts in the name of humanity. In this case, however, a dog has contributed to taking down a leader of an infamous terrorist group. A Belgian Malinois dog, named Conan is now notorious for her heroic effect of taking down ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The event took place on October 27, 2019, in the Islamic State of Northern Syria. Bakr al-Baghdadi hideout was raided by the United States Army’s secretive Delta Force team and was able to escape capture. It wasn’t until Conan gave chase to Bakr al-Baghdadi into a darkened tunnel. This is also where Bakr al-Baghdadi detonated his suicide vest, killing himself and only injuring Conan. When news broke of the Bakr al-Baghdadi suicide, the president tweeted on her bravery and being an “American Hero”. Not only receiving praise from the army and the president, but Conan also became a pop culture sensation. Saturday Night Live features a segment with Conan played by a look-alike, Ivan, and was asked about her experience when taking down Bakr al-Baghdadi in a sarcastic manner. There has been speculation and questions about the possibility that Conan receiving the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart is the military decoration of a soldier who is either injured or killed during service by the name of the president. This later was debunked by the Department of Defence spokeswoman Jessica Maxwell, which she states that “military working dogs are not eligible for the Purple Heart” (Maxwell). However, this won’t stop Conan to come into the White House, in which she was invited by President Trump and will go down in the history of U.S Army dogs such as Chips in World War II and Cario who took down the original ISIS leader, Osama bin Laden. Dogs who have trained for the war are a good representation of why dogs are man’s best friend. cause of these wildfires are the dry weather of Santa Ana winds and the diablo winds, which occur throughout Northern California and some coastal areas. In the near end of October and the beginning of November, wildfires scattered across california. The Kincade fire and the Easy fire are two of the many fires that occurred this October and November. Both of these fires combined have burned almost 80,000 acres. These fires caused many people to evacuate their homes with the fear of their personal belongings being destroyed. In 2019 alone, there was over 5,980 wildfires and these raging fires caused disturbance and destruction to about 250,349 acres of land and buildings. Through these fires, we begin to appreciate the men and women that risk their lives to allow the residents of California to live in a peaceful and safe environment.
