Bravo’s Sadie Hawkens By: John Mccallough

On May 17, 2019, Bravo was supposed to have its annual Sadie Hawkins’ dance. This year’s theme was fiesta, complimentary of the class of 2022. Despite it being canceled, not many know of the dance’s origin. Who is Sadie Hawkins? Why do girls ask guys to this dance? Why has this tradition continued for so long? All will be answered in due time! Sadie Hawkins is a cartoon character created by Al Capp for the Li’l Abner comic strip in 1937. The premise of the strip was Miss Hawkins (pictured to the left) was a very homely and “unattractive” woman, who at the age of 35, still had no suitors willing to court her, so her father devised a plan to get her married and out of his hair. He rounded up all eligible bachelors in the area and forced them to have a foot race which was essentially a run from Sadie as she chased the men vigorously. The loser would have to marry Sadie, and surely enough one of them did. The fictional town decided that albeit scary, the event was fun so they decided to make it a national tradition in which the first woman to drag the man of their choice across the finish line is legally to be wedded to him, regardless of his objections. Many teenagers and adults found the comic strip to be hilarious and deemed it worth a try in 1939. Although the very first dance is unknown, it was reported to have quickly gained popularity and by 1952, over 40,000 venues hosted the event! Back in the 30’s gender norms were a huge deal so a girl asking a guy out was rarely done, but once the idea became popular with high schools, it became normal for the event. It was viewed as one of the only days in which a woman taking initiative to ask the male wasn’t viewed as cowardly or unmanly, but instead traditional and fun. Nowadays the concept of men being asked by women, isn’t foreign or unorthodox, however the dance is still being hosted within high schools and venues because it’s fun, plain and simple. It’s an excuse to have a dance, and in terms of high school, there’s never really a good reason to have such a dance other than boost school spirit, morale, and provide students with enjoyment; likewise for adults as they too need stress relief from time to time.

Possible Abortion Laws

Camp Flog Gnaw

By: Angela Lopez

By Esmeralda Meza

Camp flog gnaw is an event that Tyler, the Creator has thrown for quite some time now. He has done it for the past seven years, starting in 2012 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. The event goes on for two days which consists of various artist that Tyler the Creator invites. Usually the line up is always different, the only people that come out every year are Taco, Mike G, Domo Genesis, and Left Brain, all of whom are very close friends to Tyler. They even started a show together called Loiter Squad that comes out in adult swim. Camp Flog Gnaw will be hosted at the Dodger’s Stadium instead of the Exposition Park for a change. Camp Flog Gnaw is for all ages and prices ranging from $180 to $300, depending on what type of ticket you get. The carnival features live music and several different rides to choose from, such as the Ferris Wheel for example. There are also tons of stands with prizes to win via winning a game. Aside from the rides they also had booths lines up that have refreshments and merchandise. Other things you’ll probably be able to find is abstract sculptures that Tyler displays there and are meant to have your pictures taken at as well to admire them. This event is usually so aesthetically set up and never seems to fail people’s expectations, this is because every year Tyler goes out of his way to make it unique. This event usually brings around 56,000 people together and every year it grows bigger and bigger, according to Tyler, “this event can be sold out about three times”. Tyler started this at the age of 21 years old, right around the age where he was able to drink legally he said. Tyler only being 28 years old has done and created so many things, more than most people can say at his age.

On Tuesday May 7, Georgia’s Republican Governor, Brian Kemp signed a “heartbeat bill” into law. Essentially, Alabama is attempting to sign an almost complete ban on abortion, but Alabama’s Senate is postponing the vote until next week. The “heartbeat bill”in Georgia would make abortions illegal “as soon as the fetus’ heartbeat can be detected.” Since the news spread on Tuesday there was many misconceptions about the bill due to the complexities of the reading , with the most common stating miscarriages and abortion would be a felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison; however, this is not the case. This felony is applied to doctors that perform the abortion. Under Alabama’s law if a woman had a miscarriage they would be subject to investigation to determine whether a doctor performed an abortion illegally. As of now, this law is still not in effect. The bill would not be enforced until 2020 due to it still needing to pass through the Senate, and then have the Governor’s signature. Many professionals shared that they believe before the bill is imposed it will be challenged in court. The Alabama bill that will be voted in next week would be an almost complete ban on abortion. The only exception would be instances where the pregnancy and/or birth has health risks to the mother. Currently in other states, rape and incest are also exceptions, but not in Alabama’s bill. According to Terri Collins, Alabama state representative, the ultimate goal of the bill is to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling. In this case the Supreme Court ruled that women had a right to an abortion. The pro-life community is confident that they have enough votes to overturn the decision.

The Beginning of An End (Opinion) By: Valerie Flores

June is a month of ending in the school year but to many it is also a month of beginnings. To many it is the end of middle school or the end of finals but to us seniors June is the end of high school. It is also the beginning of a new era for those graduating high school. It is the beginning of their four years into adulthood and college. This year was an important and busy year for seniors. The year consisted of stress and worrying but also of fun. Fall semester consisted of college applications and filling out form for their future. The future of many seniors depended on these month. They were full of stress and deadlines. Spring semester is now filled with nostalgia and decision. The decisions that seniors make now about committing to a college or university affects their future and will help define who they are. At the same time spring is filled with nostalgia about their last four years in high school. Many see high school like just another four years of school but others made memories and enjoyed high school. High school is where we saw all those who we cared about mature and grow including ourselves. Now that June is approaching many seniors are moving away and some are staying home. Graduations is fastly approaching and college is just weeks away. The end of high school for them is approaching but a new beginning is about to happen, the beginning of their life, their education. This is the month where seniors enter adulthood and their future begins. But even though the end of our teenage years are ending and the end of free education is approaching there is still time to create new memories and prepare for our great future ahead of us. Graduation is three weeks away, Grad Nite is also three weeks away now is the time to create never ending memories with our friends. Now is the time to succeed and accomplish our dreams. This is a new beginning, a new way of life.

Excessive amount of dietary fat in the brain can affect mental health By Shauna Freeman

On May 13, 2019 new research in mice might now explain what happens in the brains of individuals who have a high-fat diet. Many studies including one that Medical News Today covered in November last year have found that people with obesity are at increased risk of depression. Although, it has remained unclear exactly as to why this is the case, and what biological mechanisms influence obesity-related depression. A team of researchers from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom and the Gladstone Institutes, in San Francisco, CA, have recently studied how eating a diet high in saturated fats might cause depression, using mouse models to prove the study. The researchers wrote “When compared with patients of normal body weight, overweight and obese patients showed a substantially slower response to antidepressant treatment, less improvement in neuroendocrinology and cognitive processing, and less antidepressant-induced weight gain,”. The research team conducted a preliminary study in mouse models, which the scientists fed a high-fat diet, containing up to 60% of both saturated and unsaturated fats. The brains of mammals, and human alike, actually need certain fatty acids such as omega-3 to function properly. Humans bodies cannot synthesize fatty acids on their own, and so they need to absorb these nutrients from food. However, not all fatty acids are as healthy, and the overaccumulation of fatty acids in the body can lead to health problems. In the study, the researchers observed how fatty acids accumulated in the brains of the mice eating the high-fat diet, and whether these substances affected mechanisms that scientists connect to mental health and changes in behavior consistent with the presence of depression. The team found that the mice in their studies experienced an influx of palmitic acid to a region of the brain known as the hypothalamus, which regulates the release of various hormones into the bloodstream. Palmitic acid is a common saturated fatty acid that is present in many different foods and ingredients, including palm and olive oil, cheese, butter, margarine, and some meat products. According to previous research, this fatty acid may explain the link between obesity and an increased risk of cardiovascular problems. Throughout the study, the investigators have uncovered another role it seems the high levels of palmitic acid in the hypothalamus alter a signaling pathway that researchers associate with traits of depression. This pathway, known as cAMP/PKA, is involved in many metabolic processes, including dopamine signaling, which, in turn, contributes to the regulation of emotions. Therefore, in mice at least, the researchers were able to confirm that the absorption of certain dietary fats has a direct impact on brain-signaling pathways that influence the development of depression. The team believes that the mechanism it observed in mice is probably also at play in humans with obesity-related depression. The current findings also gave the researchers a clue as to how to potentially treat obesity-related depression more effectively. They decided to try reducing levels of an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase, which usually breaks down cAMP an intercellular “messenger. This approach allowed them to protect the mice from developing behaviors consistent with the presence of depression. In the future, the researchers hope that these findings will help experts to develop better treatments or preventive approaches against obesity-related depression.

Is the Moon Shrinking? By: Kimberly Lopez

On May 13, 2019 NASA scientists stated the moon had gotten more than 150 shorter over the years. According to recent pictures captured by NASA the moon is slowly shrinking. The shrinking of the moon isn’t just a current issue, but something that has been happening for millions of years. Evidently, this drastic change of the moon shrinking is causing lunar quakes and forming thrust faults. Lunar quakes are relatively equivalent to earthquakes and can usually last up to an hour and occur when the freezing crust of the moon expands as it returns to sunlight after two weeks of the lunar night time. Recently NASA stated, “The Moon is shrinking as its interior cools, getting more than about 150 feet (50 meters) skinnier over the last several hundred million years”. Not only is the moon shrinking, but shockingly it is also getting wrinkles and the crust is becoming brittle. As of now NASA and several scientists are are using a special algorithm to pinpoint more quake locations.
