Track and Field Goes To The City Preliminary Finals

Senior Night: Softball Edition

By:Melinda Renteria On Thursday, May 2, 2019 the undefeated girls softball team celebrated their last home game by commemorating the seniors with the annual senior night. The seniors who were celebrated were Candice Hernandez, Alyssa Vargas, and Valeria Morales. Their younger teammates decorated the dugout with colorful balloons and even made each senior a poster. The posters had the team member’s name, jersey number, and pictures from the past season and various seasons throughout their high school career. The girls dressed up as they prepared to take their last pictures with one another as a team. The last game took place using the homefield at Hazard Park against the school Maywood Academy. Prior to the game, the seniors called their teammates and asked them to form a circle. They prepared as they gave their customary pre-game chant and peptalk, the last they would give in the comfort of Bravo’s homefield. The team then proceeded to fill their positions on the field to start warming up for the big game. The girls played a strong game. The final score was 19-5, giving the Bravo Knights another incredible victory. Way to go Lady Knights!

On Friday, May 3, 2019, Bravo’s Track and Field raced in Sotomayor High School taking on different events like the 4x100 relay, 3200 meter long distance, hurdles, and triple jumps. Each Bravo knight took on the challenge of competing against all the Northern League schools and each other to which they went up against throughout the season to qualify for Preliminary City Finals. Although everyone practiced endless amount of hours weekly perfecting their jumps, not everyone could qualify for City Finals. City Preliminary Finals is one the highest accomplishments that a runner can achieve because it is a representation of the endless hours the runner has dedicated themselves to, the amount of effort they put in yearlong during after school practices and weekend practices, and lastly the hard work that set them aside from each individual runner by pushing through the pain, sweat, and tears. Once runners arrive on the field, the atmosphere to which they are accustomed to changes. The atmosphere during City is different because of the simple aspect that they are no longer completing against runners from schools that they raced against during the regular season, but are now completing against the top and fastest runners from all of Los Angeles. These Bravo Knight’s mindset shifts from relaxed to determined, focused, and sharp the moment they set feet on the track as they begin their warm-ups before there race whether it be sprints, long distance, or jumps. However, with the astounding guidance from Mr. Russell who coaches the Bravo Track & Field, Bravo Knights are grateful to have a coach who has prepared them physically and mentally for what is expected during City as they showcase their ability to be great on the track against the fastest among Los Angeles. As a result, these Bravo Knights have demonstrated the ultimate grit, hard work, perseverance as they have qualified for the 2019 City Preliminary Finals on May 5th, 2019. Congratulations to the 3200m runners: Karla Sanchez, Tammy Tran, and Rachel Gomez, the 300m hurdles runner: Virginia O’Vincent, the 4x100m relay runners: Tammy Tran, Karla Sanchez, Virginia O’ Vincent, and Rhiannon Chavez, the Long Jump participants: Yvonne Trenh and Candela Meza, the Freshman/Sophomore 3200m: Angelica Milar, the 800m runner: Sergio Castillo, the 3200m runner: David Roman, the 110m and 300m hurdle runner : Fabian Islas, the 4x400 relay runners: Sergio Castillo, Maximiliano Calles, Fernando Reynaga, and Joel Marquez, the Triple Jump participants: Fabian Islas and Diego Palma. Great job on all your races Bravo Knights, keep up the hard work!

Zaharan Hashim is being accused of the terrorist attacks that happen on Easter Sunday at churches and hotel in Sri Lanka. Hashim is a Muslim preacher. He thought people who don’t believe in any religion are ruining his hometown. He said some hateful things towards muslim people and was bringing attention to him. Wanted new members to join and become militants. Many reported that Hashim was dangerous to the police and they ignored them. They thought he wouldn’t be able to do what he did. He really respected his religion and took it very serious.

Extinction Rebellion Protests in London Strike a Nerve on Political Action By: Viviana Villafuerte

Thousands of people crowded London’s city landmarks for many days on April 2018 demanding political action towards climate change. The strategic movement was organized by Extinction Rebellion. Extinction Rebellion was established just last year by environmental activists. Their goal is for the British government to reduce their net gas emissions to zero by 2025. They claim climate change will lead to our extinction. It is an emergency that needs to be addressed more forcefully. 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, a swedish climate activist, joined the protests later on. She said, “You don’t listen to the science because you are only interested in solutions that will enable you to carry on like before”. The protests began on April 15th. In one protest the activists took a pink boat plastered with the words “tell the truth” to Oxford Circus. A die-in was made in the Natural History Museum to bring awareness to the extinction of many species. People also climbed on top of trains, glued themselves to the Waterloo bridge, blocked roads and even sat in trees in Parliament Square. More than 1,000 of the activists were arrested in these organized protests. The Parliament was against the protests. The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said, “let London return to business as usual”. Dr.Genevieve Guenter, an environmental expert retorted, ““Business as usual” will cause about 3.7 C of warming by 2100”.

The strategic protests were effective in many aspects. They raised awareness around the world. Activists such as Greta Thunberg became involved as well as influential people like Emma Thompson. Political figures joined and opposed the movement. This established the tense opinions on action for climate change in London. This movement has influenced others like the more recent students’ efforts to raise awareness by skipping school and protesting in the U.S. They demand political action as well. It is no longer something that can be overlooked.

The Met Gala in New York City

Rocketman on Itunes

It’s that time of year again, where well known celebrities get an invite to the Met Gala. On Monday, May 8th, 2019, the Met Gala was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Fashionistas get to go all out as they get to dress their appointed celebrity based on a specific theme. This years theme was, “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” When people hear “camp,” the denotations are usually a campfire, a tent, nature, and so forth but this particular theme has different connotations. “Camp: Notes on Fashion” is an essay written by Susan Sontag, an American writer. The essay further explains and expands on the ideas of discovery and culture. Big brand names such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Coah, Michael Kors, Gucci, and many more are featured on this runway expressing their visions based on the theme. Big names arrived on the red carpet wearing marvelous creations all designed by scratch. Some celebrities included Lady Gaga, Thirty Seconds to Mars’ leadman Jared Leto, the Kardashians, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Darren Criss, Lily Collins, Richard Madden, Sophie Turner, Joe Jonas, Taron Egerton, and many more. This was a gathering filled with artists, fashion designers, talk show hosts, actors, and actresses. This is an event that is held every year to raise money for the fashion industry. The New York Times calls this event, “the super bowl of fashion.” Unfortunately, not everyone is allowed into this event. The Met Gala is based on an “invite-only” policy and features the biggest names in the pop culture industry. There are 550 people who are invited and allowed entrance into the Gala. Since the event does feature high-end people and name brands, tickets into this event can start from $35,000. It is a formal event that requires an artistic eye in clothing. The mystery behind this event is that no one really knows what happens at this event. News publications rave about the celebrities and the outfits but never really expand and the actual meaning of the event. The New York Times reveals that photos are only allowed on the red carpet but as celebrities walk into the Museum, there are no further interviews. It’s very secretive and mysterious as this event has been occurring since 1948. The event was organized by Vogue and was founded by Eleanor Lambert who was also a fashion designer.
