Bravo 2020 National Magnet School of Excellence By: Isabel Reynoso

Over the speaker, Bravo students were informed , last week, that our school has won another award. The award is the Magnet School of Excellence. This award is one of the most prestigious awards a magnet school can get in the entire nation, and can come with a total of $5,000 as well. The full name of this award is actually the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson School of Excellence Award, and was created to commemorate him. He was one of the founding members of the Magnet Schools in America (MSA). He worked in the Kansas City (Missouri) Public School system and became the 2nd MSA president (1994-1995). To learn more about this award and what the money might go towards I decided to ask our Bravo magnet coordinator, Ms. Dypiangco, questions. Is this the first time our school has won an award of this magnitude?” She said no, and informed me that Bravo had previously won an award for high distinction. This award is actually second to the Award for excellence and she expressed how happy she was for Bravo to receive it. This award had actually been one they were really pining over for a while now. What does this award mean for the students? She explained to me how this award reflects the hard work of the students, school and the staff have put in. This award shows others what a good school we are and puts some weight on Bravo. Ms. Dyiangco further elaborates by saying “... What it means (the award) is that hopefully by coming from a school of high standards and such quality we are able to have our students also have our school carry some weight- whether it be in the college applications or their resumes and whatever else they are involved in.” It shows that Bravo is a quality school and hopefully encourages the next generation of kids to go here. Do you have any idea where the $5,000 might go to? She mentioned that another school is also up for the prize money. So Bravo didn’t immediately win it, it’s still up in the air, but she did inform me that there would be an award ceremony in Vegas somewhere between April 13-17. She hopes they will announce the winner of the money then. Ms. Dypiangco then states that if they do end up winning the money she thinks “ ...it should go back into what it is that we do in the work that we do with our students.” Personally, what areas of Bravo would you want the $5,000 to go to? She joked around saying “ the obvious thing would be to have a party huh?” But then stated how realistically she would like the money to go to whatever funds really needed it. She also mentioned how maybe that could open up some opportunities to add more scholarships for the students of Bravo.

Bravo holds its annual Athletic Pep Rally By: Diego Toledo

Season is practically here folks! It's time to show our mighty strength outside the books and to the court. To lighten up the beginning of the season, Bravo held its Athletic pep rally honoring and cheering for its many teams who will go on and compete for wins, probably even championship. Our crazed principle Dr. Lopez hosted the event that was put together by our very own creative leadership team. Each sport had its own banner and ran together as a team through their own banner one by one showing their excitement for the start of the new season. The sports that were introduced were swimming, baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, cheer, basketball and track. It's a long list to bring much attention and hype to our award winning school. Besides the whole excitement surrounding the start of the season. I asked a few players about how they feel and how they are preparing to compete with other teams. Bravo Softball player Zoey Castaenda is nervous about the season but has grand hopes “ that our team gets further in playoffs”, expressing that last year they were very close and she hopes this new season will bring a bright chance of winning playoffs. Bravo swimmer Ricardo is preparing for this season by “being in bodybuilding trying to make my body slimmer and going to the pools on the weekends”, he makes these efforts in the hope of improving his time which will give him a spot in the championship as well as a spot on the varsity team. Making their debut, Baseball is going to have their very 1st official game soon. Coach David Rodrugiez says he’s very excited and honored to coach Bravo’s very 1st baseball team. To prepare his players for the season he’s “starting off with conditioning and strength building ...at the same time working on fundamentals”. His hope is every coach's hope which is hoping all the players are well prepped to play and “their ready to compete against these tough teams”. All our teams are ready to fight back but they won’t be alone as they have the support of the whole school by them.

The Impeachment Trial of Donald Trump By Luz Sandoval

Trump’s Senate impeachment trial week has all been about whether the president should be removed from office or not. Republicans state that they want this to be done in two weeks but the democrats say “Not so fast”. The democrats have just tried to get ten witnesses to this impeachment trial, therefore, the Republicans had blocked their requests. According to Trump, he doesn’t want John Bolton to testify. After all, Donald Trump states that it’s a “national security” problem because Bolton might reveal his judgment about leaders and will say negative things about him because they didn’t end on good terms. Day three of the impeachment’s trial most senators weren’t in their seats during the trial. The president’s lawyers have said their opening to defend President Donald Trump and Democrats call for witnesses in the trial. President Trump blocked the testimony of Mr. Bolton because he was going against him and is willing to testify what happened with Ukraine. Now the main argument is that John Bolton is only doing this to sell out his books that has “facts” about why he’s getting impeached . But there’s more evidence about why Trump is getting impeached, Lev Parnas said that he worked for Trump to get dirt from Joe Biden.

Coronavirus: A Growing Epedemic By: Noemi Pedraza

Approximately 3 weeks ago, scientists reported to have found the central cause for a mysterious pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, one of Central China’s most populated cities. They identified that a new type of coronavirus was responsible for the growing outbreak. At the time, major health organizations, like the Center for Disease Control, simply advised to practice good hygiene. Now, weeks later, a problem that had seemed to only have been affecting Wuhan, has spread internationally. Coronavirus is a large group of viruses that typically result in respiratory illnesses. They can lead to something as small as the common cold or as deadly as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Patients with this new virus typically report to have symptoms such as fever, coughing, and trouble breathing. The number of deaths in China has increased to above 130, with the number of infected increasing as well. China made sure to take drastic measures involving massive quarantines and even constructing a new hospital specifically for those who are infected. This past week, the Lunar New Year was celebrated resulting in mass migration to Asian countries including Wuhan. The fear of spreading has resulted in intense health screenings among the U.S’s major airports. At the moment, five cases have been confirmed to be coronavirus in the United States ,which have so far have been those who traveled from Wuhan. However, two of these confirmed cases are from Los Angeles and Orange County. Aside from the United States, France, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Cambodia,Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, Canada, and Sri Lanka have reported confirmed cases.

On the 27th of January 2020 , the annual Grammy Award show was held in Los Angeles, at the Staples Center which was hosted by singer/songwriter Alicia Keys. This year was the 62nd Grammy award show and the last award show where Ken Ehrlich, the executive producer of the show, would be in his position; this lead to a wonderful tribute performance by singers Camila Cabello, Common, Misty Copeland, John Legend, and more while surrounded by an orchestra and magnificent dancers. The performance was filled with magic and dreamlike emotions like many other performances from the latest show such as Demi Lovatoś heartwarming performance of her original song ̈Anyone ̈ where the artist herself was brought to tears by her growth from her past of depression and self conflict. Other performances consisted of Lizzo as an amazing opening, who dedicated the night to recently passed Laker basketball player Kobe Bryant, performing her songs ¨Cuz I Love You ̈ and ̈Truth Hurts ̈ and a tribute song to the fallen rapper Nipsey Hussle performed by DJ Kaled and John Legend. Not only was Lizzo a successful performer but was one of the artists who won a Grammy award that night for ̈Best Pop Solo Performance.¨ Other award winners that night were Billie Eilish, who won 5 awards at just the age of 18, Tyler the Creator for Best Rap Album of the Year, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus for Pop Duo/ Group Performance and Music Video of the year, Willie Nelson for Country Solo Performance of the year, and many more talented artists. The audiences watching from home to those in front of the stage were all delighted by this years show and it is safe to say people are anticipating for the next one.
