RASTER: THE NEW EYEWEAR COLLECTION IN EXCLUSIVE ACETATE Our life today is increasingly invaded by digital graphics. Raster, the new collection of VANNI eyewear, draws inspiration from the digital present and a term commonly used by 21st century graphic designers.

Raw Material: VANNI exclusive acetates. Design Detail: the weave of the Raster eyewear collection, created exclusively by VANNI, conjures up the tight graphic lattice that contains the infinitesimal information of a pixelated digital image. Raster reproduces a compact, high resolution, iridescent and consequently changing checker board: the precision of the colourful micro lines merging with the overlapping material, creating the optical illusion of a cubic geometric pattern. Shapes and Colours: the Raster acetates combine black with grey, brown with gold, blue with brown, and new combinations of iridescent orange and brown, turquoise and gold and tones of red to satisfy both the customer in search of a more conventional look, and also those opting for a vibrant original style. Some frames come with a combination of Raster material with one transparent colour, tone-on-tone or in twocolour contrast versions. Styles to suit both the male and female customer: classic, wide and rectangular for men, a feminine, wide rounded butterfly shape for women as well as more conventional shapes for the smaller face.

02/TECHNOLOGY AND STYLE

FROM CONCEPT TO REALTY

CU T

It all starts with an idea, from a reaction to current trends, fashion or art: a simple intuition that kick starts a creative process that over the course of a few months matures into a new collection of eyewear. Let’s take our collection Remaster in metal and acetate that takes (ripetizione) a contemporary look at classic eyewear design: iconic shapes, timeless colourways and designs that have shaped and dictated style in previous decades. For the metal frames for example, VANNI uses advances in manufacturing technology to revitalise traditional shapes. If you think back to the ‘80’s, glasses had very distinct separate parts constructed with different materials in different colourways that were glued together. It is now possible for VANNI to recreate the same effect from a single sheet of metal. Lets look at the various steps of production, perfected by master craftsmen in the valleys of the Vento region, where highly specialised modern manufacturing has capitalised on developments in technology to produce the best eyewear in the world.

WELDING

Phase 1 the metal for the main frame of the glasses is literally sculpted from a single sheet of raw metal using high tech milling technology to reproduce miniature engravings in high or base relief. Phase 2 the frontal frame is then gently bent and shaped to create ergonomic eyewear that ensures a confortable fit. Phase 3 the frontal frame is then welded with the almost invisible components to attach the temples and nose pads, one pair of glasses at a time. Phase 4 the completed frame is then passed through a specialised polishing machine where it is washed and the metal galvanized before coloration. 5th and final phase the final touch of VANNI style: the colour is applied manually and expertly to one pair of glasses at a time with a special syringe.

CO LO R AT I O N

The process has to be carried out quickly and with great skill and precision as the colour brings the glasses to life. Several months have passed from initial concept to a tangible result but now our glasses are ready to take their place in the new VANNI collection.

03 VANNI TOUR OF THE WORLD

VANNI IN LONDON Put “Visit London” into Google and you get millions of sites and suggestions. With the 100% Optical Trade Fair that opens in London on the 4th of February - where VANNI will be exhibiting our new collections, we thought we would share with you some useful tips that we have learnt along the way. We won’t bother mentioning the usual tourist attractions that are always advertised, but give you something more easy and original that will make you fall in love with undoubtedly one of the greatest cities in the world.

S O U T H WA R K

The first is to try visiting London in a cold and wet February, cheaper and with less tourists. Just jump aboard a red double decker bus and go for a tour. Some routes seem to be designed just for the foreign visitor. Buy a daily travel card for £12.50 and you can ride around all day. Try routes 10, 11 and 15 to see the sites. Alternatively, if it’s not raining, walk down Southbank beside the Thames from the London Eye to Tower Bridge and maybe take time to have a look around Borough Market and eat some street food. If you’re not too tired, cross

the bridge to the Tower of London to soak up the atmosphere of medieval London and her prisons and guillotines or to fantasize about wearing the crown jewels. We remind you that many public museums in London have free entry and are more than worth a visit. From the British Museum full of treasures from around the world to the monstrous dinosaur skeletons in the Science Museum, to the refined and sophisticated exhibits at the Victoria and Albert Museum and mind blowing paintings at the national

and Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square. You can’t see everything but enjoy soaking up what you can. VANNI is passionate about modern art and London has made an outstanding contribution in the last 50 years. Three important suggestions. Don’t miss the Tate Modern (crossing the Millennium Bridge from St. Pauls), the Saatchi Gallery near Sloane Square and the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park to check out emerging artists that will certainly go down in history. Why not try a cruise down the Thames? Not expensive and it gives you amazing views of London. Leave from Westminster Pier and follow the river down to Greenwich, home to the Royal Observatory, Planetarium and the National Maritime Museum: thereyou can watch a digital simulation of the Battle of Trafalgar, where national hero Lord Nelson ended his days. There are thousands of things to do in London but what we suggest in just a taster of an amazing city to get you hooked so that you return many times.
