• Historians don’t know much about the first Thanksgiving dinner held in Massachusetts in 1621, except that it was a feast gathering shared by the Plymouth Colony pilgrims and the native Wampanoag tribe. The only surviving account of that auspicious event, written by English settler Edward Winslow, describes a week-long harvest celebration, expressing gratitude to God for their provision. Winslow doesn’t specify the date, which was likely in mid-October, and didnʼt specifically mentioned the word “thanksgiving” or list what food was served.

* Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backward. In fact, they’re so impressive in the air that they’ve been referred to as the “flying ninja.” * And speaking of flying, fruit flies can turn in midair simply by shrugging their shoulders. * Want to feel safer while driving? White cars are considered the safest color because they typically stand out against black roads. Statistics have also shown that they’re 12% less likely to be involved in an accident than black cars. * Forefingers possess the highest dexterity among their eight neighbors. * Until it actually blows against something, wind makes no sound. * Gold will never erode because it is chemically inert, meaning it doesn’t react to oxygen in the atmosphere. * Earlier this year, Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour performances registered as a 2.3 earthquake on seismometers in Seattle due to the collective dancing of her enthusiastic fans. The activity was compared to 2011’s “Beast Quake,” in which Seattle Seahawks fans shook the ground as they celebrated a touchdown, but Ms. Swift’s lasted longer. * During the 12th century, tennis was first played in France, but without rackets. Instead, players used the palms of their hands to lob the ball back to their opponents. * Humans’ ability to detect and discern scents fluctuates throughout the day, peaking during the late hours when environmental stimuli decrease, likely due to changes in body temperature and brain activity. *** Thought for the Day: “For pilgrims walking, every footfall is doubled, landing at once on the actual road and also on the path of faith.” -- Robert Macfarlane (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

No. 1: Collaboration. At the top of the list for successful entrepreneurs is the ability to collaborate. Successful entrepreneurs don't assume they know it all. They seek counsel and advice from others through collaboration. Those who can brainstorm, draw strength from others, delegate and build strong relationships are more likely to click with customers who will then ensure their success.

No. 8: Imagination. Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." I won't go so far as to say, as some do, that if you can dream it, you can do it. But I will say that the ability to visualize the future and the way things might be is one of the most useful tools in the successful entrepreneur's tool belt. Answer: Ah J.A. …this is a difficult question. Here is my unsatisfying answer: It’s the one you find most comfortable. There really is no product that I think is better than another. Everyone has his or her favorite. I definitely prefer a particular type of pillow and brand, and I used to recommend it to all my patients. But guess what: Fifty percent of them would usually be disappointed! This shaped my perception, and I stopped recommending pillows. My advice is to go to a mattress store which carries pillows and place one on a bed and lie on it. The one that feels most comfortable to you is the one to purchase. One more important point: If your neck hurts and you cannot find a comfortable sleeping position, the problem is very likely not the pillow alone. Many of my clients have found their once-comfortable pillow to now be uncomfortable because of neck pain, and their onceuncomfortable pillow now comfortable because of pain relief they received from chiropractic care. True story. ***

Q: I recently saw the movie “Killers of

A: Yes, actress Lily Gladstone is of Blackfeet and Nez Perce indigenous ancestry and grew up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. She earned her bachelor’s degree of fine arts in acting/directing at the University of Montana with a minor in Native American Studies. “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the newest film by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese, isn’t her acting debut, but it will very likely lead to her first Oscar nomination, as she has wowed Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) audiences with her performance in a film that also stars Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. According to an article in Entertainment Weekly, what cemented Gladstone’s decision into taking the role in “Flower Moon” was the fact that Scorsese “sought out input from the Osage community.” The movie, which is based on the book by David Grann, is about a series of real murders in the 1920s that took place on the oil-rich land of Oklahoma’s Osage Nation, which led the newly formed FBI to jump on the case. Before landing this high-profile role, Gladstone auditioned but never won roles on the hit series “Yellowstone,” a show she calls “delusional” in its portrayal of her native people. She has appeared in several critically acclaimed series, however, including Showtime’s “Billions” and FX on Hulu’s

How Much Does It Cost To Raise a Dog?

3. The Weekly “Brain Breaker”

11/12 Chicken Soup for the Soul Day

Money matters. Even the closest of humancanine bonds are impacted by an empty bank account, an unpaid mortgage or a lost job. So the decision to bring a dog into your life isn’t just emotional; it’s also financial. That said, entire lives surely have been wasted on the interminable attempt to plan for everything. Unhand the unlikely, and focus on the plausible. If your job is secure, don’t run your life from an assumption of imminent unemployment. If you have a year’s worth of liquid savings, don’t live like you’re broke. And if both of these conditions apply to you and you want a dog and have the time, get one. How much should you expect your new dog to cost? There’s the one-time fixed cost for the purchase of the pooch. Where your dog comes from will determine how much you spend. Shelters and rescue groups generally charge adoption fees of approximately $100 to $250. These fees help defray the costs of caring for the animals and preparing them to live in new homes -- or in a home for the first time. Adoption fees also serve to ensure that people are serious about adding four paws to their family. Independent breeders typically charge more -- often thousands of dollars more. People who go this route tend to have a reason for doing so -- they want a dog to perform an exact task, do a specific job, display a particular trait, exert a predictable degree of energy or look a certain way. Price rises with demand when supply remains short. After the initial investment, there are the recurring expenses of food, supplies, grooming and veterinary care. And then there are services such as boarding, dog walking and dog sitting that are optional for some and mandatory for others, depending on your lifestyle. Lifetime ownership costs for a small dog who lives the average lifetime of 15 years are esti-

Early Resolutions for 2024 Having achieved less than half of the New Year’s resolutions I made in January 2023, I decided that for 2024 I need to give much more thought to what I'm commiting myself to. In other words, not to take on more than I can realistically do ... and to take the time needed to think these lofty goals all the way through. Hence this early start in talking about resolutions. I’m leaning toward one-time efforts, things I commit to doing once, not whole lifestyle changes that, frankly, I’m probably too old to actually achieve at this point. So I’m looking for success in smaller areas. To that end, I can likely accomplish the following resolutions I've listed as realistic doables for 2024:  Hire someone to paint the bathroom. Surely the neighborhood handyman will be looking for extra cash. Better for him, rather than me, to climb a stepladder and precariously stretch myself out over the tub to reach the wall with a

The Art of

DESIGN by Joseph Publillones

La Vie Bohéme There is always a new term in the world of interior design that inspires new trends and yet another approach to design. The latest buzzword is “boho” or “boho chic.” “Boho” is a term used to define things that are unconventional and artistic; however, understanding the meaning of the root of this term can help you achieve your own distinctive style. What does “boho” really mean? Well, first, it is an abbreviation of the French word bohèmian, which refers to Gypsies and is named after a particular group of people who traveled from Bohemia, a region of the Czech Republic. A more recent example for boho culture existed in Greenwich Village in New York City during the 1950s, also known as the Beat Generation, which finally gave way to the hippie culture of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, “bohemian” is more of an adjective than a noun and indicates an aesthetic that takes its influence from the free spirits of past generations. The modern boho chic appearance is eclectic, with an emphasis on ethnic and vintage pieces from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. Mixing patterns and textures is one of the distinguishing characteristics of boho interiors. There’s an infallible formula for mixing and matching cushions like a professional -- I’ll tell you about that later -- but when it comes to creating a boho chic space, all the rules stop working. Bright colors and many patterns like floral

mated at about $18,000. This amount is higher for large dogs, mostly because of the increased food consumption. This annual estimate doesn’t include emergencies -- surgeries for sustained trauma such as an animal attack or getting hit by a car or underlying disease that surfaces later in life. It also doesn’t include training. Anyone who reads this column knows I don’t consider training optional. Some version of dog training is essential to fully realize your dog’s potential as a dog and the potential of your relationship as members of different species. Training bridges the communication gap. It also serves as a preventive measure against those pricey emergencies mentioned earlier, as well as lawsuits and fines. If you’ve been thinking, dreaming, breathing dog for months, if you’ve done your homework and know what you want and what you’re capable of, and if these numbers don’t scare you, then you’ve done all you can. You’re ready. He’s waiting. Go get your dog, and prepare to be amazed. Woof!

Sell my father’s coin collection, specifically the tiny gold coins I found in his jewelry box. I’m already watching the price of gold, and when it reaches a certain number, I will pounce and head for the coin shop where I’ve already made inquiries. Visit the local gym and try out ellipticals and stair climbers, which will surely convince me once and for all that I do not need to spend the money for one in the house. Learn to juggle. Yes, this is a lifelong goal I've always had and something I've wanted to master since childhood. It's something that will take hours of practice, but once I learn to juggle three soft balls (they come in a kit on Amazon, along with a how-to booklet), I’ll be able to cross that elusive accomplishment off my bucket list. A final resolution that will need lengthy consideration: adopting a young kitten for my cat, to give him a little pal.

I think I’ll be more successful with this list of resolutions than I’ve ever been before. And this one's going to be more fun!

and paisley mixed with ethnic patterns like tribal prints and geometric patterns are a hallmark of the boho chic style. This decorative style is nourished by vibrant and intense colors, printed textiles and a combination of different types of furniture. So that the result of this mixture does not turn out to be chaotic, I would recommend a neutral base in the walls. And let the rest of the decoration be in charge of giving color and life to the room. Contrasting colors and patterns will add the bohemian spirit. Boho floors are usually layered with carpets of different designs. Sometimes, they combine one with textures and a more neutral one. Oriental carpets are a staple decorative item, as are dhurrie and shag rugs. The use of natural and rustic finishes highlights the hippie influence of the ‘60s and ‘70s on the boho chic style. Medicare Changes? N

There probably is nothing I’m asked more often than some version of this question: “When should I take my Social Security?” So today, I’m going to write yet another column about that topic -- and the related issue of how to file for Social Security benefits. But first, let me clarify the “when to file” part. As I’ve said over and over again in this column, I am not a financial planner, so I really can’t advise you about the best time to start your Social Security benefits. That’s a decision only you can make, perhaps after consulting a real financial planner. I’m just an old retired Social Security guy. So all I can do is explain Social Security rules to you to help you make that decision. (In my book, “Social Security: Simple and Smart,” I have a whole chapter devoted to this topic. You might want to check it out. You can order the book online at Amazon.com). So, whether you make that decision on your own, or with the help of my book or a financial planner, once you decide the month you want your benefits to start, many of you still want to know how far in advance you should file for those benefits. And that is the “when to file” advice I am offering in this column. Let me begin by pointing this out: Your Social Security eligibility date is always a month, not a day. For example, let’s say you were born on Aug. 25, 1957, and you want your benefits to start at your full retirement age. The full retirement age for people born in 1957 is 66 and 6 months, so you will reach full retirement age on Feb. 25, 2024. But the day you reach FRA isn’t really an issue. It’s the month that is key. In other words, your eligibility date isn’t Feb. 25, 2024. It’s just February 2024. The Social Security Administration recommends that you file three months before your eligibility month. So, if you wanted your benefits to start in February 2024, you could start the ball rolling sometime in December 2023. I used to advise people that there really was no need to rush because most Social Security retirement claims are very simple and the SSA would process them in literally a matter of days. In the past, I would have told people whose eligibility date is in February that they could even wait until January if they wanted and there would be a very good chance their first check would show up on time. But I’ve heard from so many readers who report to me about delays in either getting through to the SSA in the first place or delays in getting their benefits started. So, I guess my motto for the time being is this: Better safe than sorry. File your Social Security claim three months before your first eligibility month. But don’t let me scare you. Once you contact the SSA, you’ve established what they call a “protective filing date” and your rights to benefits are guaranteed from that month forward. For example, let’s say you wanted your benefits to start in January 2024. But for whatever reason, you didn’t get around to filing your claim until January 25, 2024. Even though your claim might not finish processing until sometime in February or possibly even March, you will be paid back to January.

ANSWER: Muscle fasciculations are common. Most people get them from time to time, sometimes in the small muscles like the eyelid and sometimes in the large muscles like your legs and arms. Fasciculation can be a sign of a serious neurological problem, such as a lower motor neuron disease. If the muscle doesn’t receive proper neurological signals, it increases its receptors so that the muscle can be easily stimulated, causing twitching.

How Seniors Can Get Help Paying for Everyday Needs DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What types of programs are available to help seniors struggling with their everyday bills, and how do I go about finding them? Since I lost my husband last year, my Social Security survivor benefit is barely enough to get by on. I am unable to work, our savings are about to run out, and I need help. -- Susan Dear Susan: I’m very sorry for your loss, but you’ll be happy to know that there are dozens of different financial assistance programs and government benefits that may be able to help you with your everyday costs. Types of Benefits Depending on your income level, location and circumstance, here are a few of the many different benefits you may be eligible for: Nutrition assistance: Programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can help pay for food at the grocery store. Winter Landscape Inspired Designs Q: I have enclosed a brochure of the porcelain dinnerware that I purchased in Germany around 1958. The set is a ser vice for 12 and has 7 pieces in each place setting. I also have a coffee pot, teapot, creamer, sugar bowl, ser ving dishes and platters. The set was made by Rosenthal; the pattern is “Diadem” and is part of its studio line that was designed by Tapio Wirkkala. The set is of great sentimental value to our family. We would appreciate it if you could tell us its approximate value and histor y.

Zeh Scherzer and Co. was founded in 1880.

*** Q: Growing up in the 1950s, my sisters and I loved watching the old black-andwhite Shirley Temple movies. Over the years, I forgot all about her until I was given a Shirley Temple book. It belonged to my motherin-law, and she received it in 1936 when she was 12. The title is “The Littlest Rebel” by the Saalfield Publishing Co. in Akron, Ohio. Could it be worth anything?

A: Your Shirley Temple book is collectible and the value depends on the condition. “The Littlest Rebel” was also a 1935 movie starring Shirley Temple. If your book is in very good condition, it would probably have a value of $15 to $20.

A: Rosenthal China and Glass Factory was founded by Phillip Rosenthal in Selb, Germany, in 1879. It produces fine china and glassware. Its mid 20th-century studio line was inspired by contemporary international designs. Tapio Wirkkala was a Finnish artist, sculptor and industrial designer. He created sophisticated porcelain and matching glassware for Rosenthal. Many of his designs reflected the simplicity of the mystical winter landscapes in his native Finland. “Polaris” is the name of the shape of your dishes, and “Diadem” is the name of the pattern. Your circa 1958 porcelain dinnerware set would probably have an insurance value of $1,600 to $2,000. *** Q: This mark is on a porcelain pedestal cake plate that is an antique. * On Nov. 13, 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia erupted in the late evening and caused volcanic mudflows that flooded the city of Armero, killing 25,000 residents. The tragedy is considered to be one of the deadliest volcano-related disasters in the 20th century. * On Nov. 14, 1851, Herman Melville’s epic novel “Moby-Dick,” about peg-legged Captain Ahab’s obsessive search for vengeance on the white whale that maimed him, made its debut in the U.S. Published to mixed reviews, it was a commercial failure and achieved its present standing as a Great American Novel only after the centennial of Melville’s birth. * On Nov. 15, 1956, the movie “Love Me Tender,” a black-and-white musical Western starring the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, was released. Named after Presley’s hit single, it was his only film that did not place him in top billing, as it was also his debut. The singer later regretted making the film, though he’d expressed a serious interest in acting, * On Nov. 16, 2004, President George W. A carpet was laid down for her to walk on to Westminster Abbey, and people cut out pieces as mementos of the day. Her reign, which lasted 45 years until her death at age 69 from what was likely pneumonia, is remembered as a “Golden Age” in British history. * On Nov. 18, 2015, New Zealand rugby union football player Jonah Lomu, who was perhaps rugby’s first global icon, died of a heart attack at age 40 after a long battle with kidney disease. * On Nov. 19, 1703, Eustache Dauger, aka “The Man in the Iron Mask,” a political prisoner famous in French history and legend, died in the Bastille. The simple trick is to take your normal putting set up. Next, move the hands and top end of the grip an inch toward the target first (without other body movement). Finally, rebound into the backstroke as if the putter head was going back as the hands were still going forward. The hope is that the putter head makes a smooth move away from the ball on a neutral path.
