• Those born with a variation in the Human Leukocyte Antigen gene are more prone to develop RA. These genes assist the immune systems to distinguish the difference between proteins manufactured by the body and proteins from disease, viruses, and bacteria.

• RA affects upwards of 1.3 million people in the U.S., affecting 2.5 times more females than males. Although it usually starts to develop between the ages of 30 and 60, it can attack children and young adults, and those older than 60. Smokers have a higher risk as do those who are obese. Family history also plays into increased chances.

• Rheumatoid arthritis isn’t the same as osteoarthritis. With osteoarthritis (OA), the cartilage between the joints breaks down, usually due to wear and tear, with the bones on either side of the cartilage aching. With RA, the immune system sees the joints as enemies and attacks them. OA usually affects the joints you use most, such as your hands, spine, hips, and knees, while RA attacks smaller joints in the hands and feet. RA also occurs in the same joints on both sides of the body and can eventually

result in bone erosion and joint deformity.

• RA goes after the body’s smaller joints first, specifically the joints that attach the fingers to the hands and the toes to the feet. It then spreads to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips, and shoulders. The damage usually occurs within the first two years, making it vital to see a medical specialist as soon as symptoms are noticed, when damage can be slowed.

• Tender, warm swollen joints are one of the first things that people notice, along with stiffness that is worse in the mornings and after periods of inactivity. Many say that fatigue is the worst symptom, accompanied by fever and loss of appetite.

• It’s not just the joints that can be affected. RA can also damage the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, nerve tissue, and salivary glands. About 40 percent of those with RA experience symptoms that don’t involve the joints.

• Controlling joint inflammation is one of the keys to slowing joint damage and reducing pain. While Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids, such as prednisone, ibuprofen and cortisone, help reduce chronic pain, inflammation, stiffness, and swelling, they do not slow down the disease.

Drugs known as DMARDs slow the disease by modifying the immune system. They are antirheumatic drugs that block critical pathways inside immune cells, suppressing the immune system to control inflammation. 

• The world’s most expensive spice is derived from the flower of the crocus sativus. Saffron has a pungent flavor used in many traditional Indian, Middle Eastern, North African, and European dishes. This crocus only blooms twice a year and has an intensive harvesting process requiring the flowers’ stigma to be carefully extracted. There are only three stigma per flower, all of which require manual labor of 40 hours per 150,000 flowers, the number of flowers required to produce 2.2 lbs. of saffron.

It’s not unusual for the price of a pound of saffron to fetch more than $5,000.

Used mattresses may harbor allergens, microscopic creatures such as bed bugs and other hygiene issues that can affect your sleep quality and overall health. A new mattress promises you are not inheriting someone else’s problems and allows you to choose a model that suits your very own comfort needs.

NO. 7: TIRES Tires are critical to vehicle and human safety. The condition of your tires can affect and impact your driving experience. Used tires may have hidden defects, such as weakened sidewalls or tread wear, which can compromise safety. Investing in new tires offers reliability and, by law, also meets safety standards.

Exception: Some tire shops sell what is known at “takeoffs.” A new takeoff is a factory OEM (original equipment manufacturer) wheel and tire that was removed from a brand-new vehicle in exchange for new custom wheels and tires. Many tire shops offer takeoffs, which they took in trade for new, fancier equipment, and then resell at a tremendously discounted price.

And the shop will still warranty the takeoffs. So while takeoffs are technically used, provided they come with a complete warranty for the second owner, takeoffs do offer a tremendous bargain.

February 3 is commemorated as “the day the music died,” referring to the tragic loss of musical talent in a plane crash on that day in 1959. This week, Tidbits profiles the musicians and the song that was written in tribute.

• Charles “Buddy” Holley was a Lubbock-born guitarist who brought us many hits, including “Peggy Sue” and “That’ll Be the Day.” When his name was misspelled on his first recording contract, he became Buddy Holly. Holly was discovered by a record company talent scout when he and his band were performing at a skating rink. The turning point in his career was landing the chance to open for Elvis Presley in 1955. He recorded “That’ll Be the Day” with his band, the Crickets, in 1957, and went on to hit the charts with seven Top 40 singles between August 1957 and August 1958.

• Holly left the Crickets, going out on his own in October 1958. On tour with The Winter Dance Party in 1959, he joined other performers for a gig in Clear Lake, Iowa, on the night of February 2.

• The Winter Dance Party tour was 24 cities, and the group of musicians traveled by bus between gigs. The tour began on January 23, 1959, and

by February 2, the harsh winter weather, two bus breakdowns, fatigue, and a pile of dirty laundry had left the group exhausted.

• When the Clear Lake, Iowa gig ended after midnight, a 365-mile road trip to Moorhead, Minnesota lay ahead, so Buddy Holly chartered a single engine Beechcraft Bonanza plane fly them there and shorten the trip.

• The words, “this’ll be the day that I die,” found in the song’s chorus are a slight change to the words of Holly’s song, “That’ll be the day.”

His “American Pie” song quickly became a number one hit.

Her autobiography, “Inside Out,” was published in 2019. During the pandemic, she quarantined in Idaho with her girls and Willis. It was eventually revealed that Willis was suffering from a neurological disorder. He and Moore remain close, along with Willis’ current wife, Emma.

For centuries, man and dog have peacefully coexisted. It’s not clear who made the first move in the relationship -- primitive man or wolf. But there is no doubt that both parties were motivated by the two forces that drove everything at that point in our mutual history: Food and shelter.

Man saw in wolf a protector of person and property. Wolf recognized in man a meal ticket and a warm corner to share in a common shelter. In some ways, things haven’t changed much since.

It is, however, important to keep in mind that the relationship in its purest form was born of a desire to improve upon the status quo, to better the quality of life for all.

People today love their dogs more than ever -- whether or not the relationship represents an improvement in quality of life. But too many otherwise educated, ambitious and successful folks are willing to settle for less from the canines in their lives when confronted with the other option: working to build something better.

A woman called me recently to discuss her dog’s problem with excessive barking. When I returned her call, she answered with the standard “hello” and promptly began screaming “shut up.”

Holding the phone at arm’s length from my ear, I said, “Are you talking to me?”

She wasn’t. She was “talking” to her dogs.

Whether on the phone or with visitors at her house, her dogs bark to the point that she can’t even hear herself talk, much less her friends. A quality of life issue.

Another woman called to discuss her dog’s aversion to strangers. She was using a homegrown method of socialization: “When people come over, we encourage them to stick their hand out to him.”

“What does this do?” I said.

“It lets the dog know the person approaching him loves dogs.”

“How does he know this?” I challenged.

At that point she conceded her method wasn’t working. And in a country with more than

Daily Step Counting How many daily steps do we really need for optimum health? Ten thousand steps seems to be the gold standard in most of what we read to keep diabetes and high blood pressure (as well as several other conditions) at bay. And how do we keep track of all our steps?

Before you decide on a high target number of steps per day, call your medical provider and ask how many you realistically should be doing. You might learn that with an otherwise fairly active, healthy life, several thousand steps per day might be enough, rather than the whole, optimistic 10,000 number.

How to count those steps is the tricky part.

I have several of those little clip-on step counters, and I have tested them a number of times by wearing them all at the same time on routine days in my normal activity. Unfortunately, they all come up with different results, and I have no way of knowing which one is the most accurate!

Doors Doors and windows are said to be the eyes and ears of buildings. Doors are great communicators. When they are open wide, they mean welcome. When doors are opened slowly, they can cause anticipation. If they creek, a door can instill fear. A slammed door ... Well, it could mean someone is not welcome.

Doors often create a first impression upon arriving at a place. Sometimes they let you see in to give you a glimpse of the inside, and sometimes they are solid to keep curious eyes at bay.

Doors are a very important element in any building that defines the boundaries between the public and the private room, and even in between rooms.

Their design can also serve as a prelude to the architecture and the decor inside.

Doors can be made of different materials depending on their use and location. They can be made of panels, wood (both solid or hollow styles) or veneered in exotic woods and painted in any color or finish, such as gloss or matte.

They can also be made of innovative materials such as stainless steel, aluminum and tempered glass -- or a combination of all of the above.

A solid door has the power to convey a solid construction, which is why many builders and homeowners don’t mind spending some extra cash on this particular item. Not All Bureaucrats Work For the Government Well, this week I learned that not all bureaucrats work for the government. They can be found in any organization anywhere, in the public sector and the private sector. They are there anytime rules need to be enforced. And in today’s column, I’ll ponder whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Here’s the story. This year, my wife and I will be reaching our 50th wedding anniversary.

And of course, I want to do something special to mark the occasion. Actually, I want to do a whole bunch of special things throughout the year. One of those is a trip I was planning to a resort destination. (It’s not too important to divulge where that trip would be taking us.)

Anyway, as part of the planning, I found a perfect place to stay. (It was perfect, in part, because it’s the same place we went on our 25th wedding anniversary.) It’s a popular place to stay in a popular tourist Mecca. And they had a hole in their vacancy calendar that fit perfectly within my other plans for this trip.

But here was the problem. It was a six-day hole, and this place has a seven-day minimum stay requirement. So the reservations agent turned down my request. (That was bureaucrat number one.) I appealed to the reservations manager and was turned down again. (That was bureaucrat number two.) But she told me I could take my case to the resort manager.

I did. And I made these points. One: our planned stay would be just one day shy of their minimum stay rules. Two: the unit we would be staying in would sit vacant for those six days.

Wouldn’t they rather have a paying customer using the place? And finally, three: Hey, it’s our 50th anniversary! How many of those do you get in a lifetime?

But guess what? Bureaucrat number three, the resort manager, turned down my request. He said, “Rules are rules. And we have a very strict seven-day minimum stay requirement.”

At first, I was upset. But I soon got over it.

After all, there are lots of beautiful places to stay in this country and around the world. And I’m sure I’ll find someplace nice to celebrate a half-century of wedded bliss with my wife.

But this incident got me pondering the whole idea of rules and why we have them and why we need people to carry out those rules. I’ll use what I know best -- the Social Security Administration and the people who work for it -- as an example.

I recall many years ago, when I still worked for the SSA, taking a claim from a woman who was filing for benefits as a divorced wife on her ex-husband’s account. The law says to get such benefits, you must have been married for at least ten years.

What the law actually says is that your marriage must have reached its tenth anniversary before the divorce became final.

Well, in this woman’s case, her divorce decree was signed just two days before their 10th anniversary. So I had to tell her that her claim was going to be turned down. She appealed to me (as I’m sure I would have done if I was in her shoes)

that she was just two days, a measly 48 hours, shy of the ten-year rule.

My heart sided with her. After all, there really was no difference between a ten-year marriage and a nine-year-and-363-day marriage. But as a government agent, a bureaucrat if you will, I had to carry out the law. And that law said you must be married ten years. The law didn’t say “about ten years” or “sort of close to ten years.” It said ten years.

Lots of times, bureaucrats get lambasted for being too rigid and too narrowly focused on carrying out the rules and regulations of the organization they work for. But what a chaotic country we’d have if this wasn’t so.

Suppose I had the power to tell the lady with the nine-year-and-363-day marriage that we’d let it slide and allow her to get divorced wife’s benefits.

What about the next woman who comes in and is just one week shy of the ten-year rule? Do we let her get benefits, too? How about somebody who is a month shy? Do you see my point? The law draws a line somewhere. And a government employee’s job is to carry out that law precisely as it’s written. It’s not the employee’s job to interpret the law they way he or she thinks it should be interpreted.

If you want examples of the chaotic mess this can create, let me take you back to the early 1970s. The welfare programs in this country were a mess. There was not one national welfare program.

Rather, there was a hodgepodge mix of programs, sometimes run by state agencies, but often run by individual counties or even cities and towns. And many times, the people running these programs were not good bureaucrats carrying out the laws.

They were bad public servants who enforced their own version of how they thought the rules should be. In one county in the South, a local welfare official was routinely denying benefits to anyone who was not white. In another jurisdiction in the North, the welfare administrator saw to it that her friends

and family got higher benefits than they were due.

Stories like this went on and on.

That’s why President Richard Nixon decided to nationalize the welfare system by creating the Supplemental Security Income program and letting it be run by the federal agency that, at the time, got the highest marks for efficiency and good public service. And that would be the Social Security Administration. (I have written past columns about the effect that had on the SSA, and will no doubt write more about it in the future.) For now, I can just tell you that the welfare mess was straightened out by letting good public servants (bureaucrats if you will) run the program.

So now let me circle back to those “bureaucrats” who denied my offer to fill a six-day hole in their vacancy calendar. On the one hand, I understand their thinking. A seven-day minimum stay probably ensures they are not letting rabble-rousers onto their property for “one-night stands.” On the other hand, my 80-year-old wife and I haven’t roused any rabble in many years. And I’m trying to recall the last one-night stand we had. (At our age, 15-minute stands are all we can manage!)

Defining Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Finding Out How to Treat It DEAR DR. ROACH: Please explain Hashimoto’s disease. I have heard that it is rare, but two colleagues have recently been diagnosed. We all work in a very high-stress field. -- J.H. ANSWER: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not at all a rare disease. It occurs in up to 10% of the population and much more frequently in women than men. Although people can be diagnosed at a young age, it is more common at older ages.

It is caused by an autoimmune reaction to different parts of the thyroid, with thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies commonly found. TSH receptor antibodies are found on occasion.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis most commonly causes low thyroid levels, although there may be a period of time early in the disease where thyroid levels are high. Not everybody with antibodies will develop low thyroid levels. The thyroid is sometimes enlarged, but a careful exam will usually show that the gland is firm, showing that immune cells have infiltrated the gland.

Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the gland can no longer make. The dose depends on body size to a certain extent, but needs to be adjusted based on lab results. Most people are treated with levothyroxine, also called T4, which is the primary hormone made by the thyroid.

T4 is converted to T3 (also called triiodothyronine, the active form of the hormone) in various tissues outside the thyroid. T3 only stays in the body for a short while before it is destroyed, so a once-daily treatment with T4, which lasts longer, allows the body to convert T4 to T3.

Most people do very well with T4 treatment. A minority of people cannot efficiently make the active T3 form, in which case-combination treatment can be considered. Unfortunately, T3 must be dosed twice daily.

It is thought that stress hormones play a role, since stress does seem to increase the risk of developing an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Huntington’s disease runs in my family; my brother and sister started having symptoms in their early 60s.

I am 80 and don’t have any symptoms. Can I assume that I don’t have it? I hear testing can be expensive. Are there any organizations that test for free? -- S.B. ANSWER: Huntington’s is a progressive, degenerative neurological disease that causes abnormal body movements, psychiatric changes and dementia. The movement disorder, called chorea, is the first symptom. It can begin very slowly, and people may not be aware of it. A careful exam can show the characteristic findings. A movement disorder specialist is the ideal person to see in this case.

It would be very unusual to begin hav-

ing symptoms at, or after, the age of 80, so it is very likely that you do not have the disease if you don’t have any symptoms and have received a normal exam by an expert.

Testing should be performed only after careful consideration and counseling by an expert such as a genetic counselor. According to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (see tinyurl.com/HDgenetictesting), testing can cost between $315-$1,500, but it is often covered by insurance. Free testing may be available as part of a research study.

Whom to trust?

Wouldn’t you get a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach if you wondered whether your treatment nurse had obtained a fake diploma?

Three owners of nursing schools in two states were found guilty, as well as several of their pals (for a total of 27 scammers), for a scheme that involved selling fake nursing diplomas they apparently got from two formerly genuine schools.

Students who wanted to take the national nursing board exam could purchase from the scammers diplomas that would allow them to take the tests.

The genuine schools were eventually closed because of their test failure rate. However, some applicants managed to pass the exam and used the fake documents to get jobs everywhere in the country. Over 7,000 fake diplomas were handed out.

What happens now, one wonders? Assuming there were records, will anyone go after any of the faux nurses and at least let their new employers (such as the Department of Veterans Affairs) know about the fake diplomas?

In another case, a man was sent to prison (not for long enough) for distributing over $16 million in adulterated HIV drugs, as well as other medications, all around the country. The scammer and his pals actually set up businesses in multiple states from which they sold the corrupted drugs to wholesale drug suppliers, which then sold them to pharmacies, ensuring that the drugs were spread far and wide. The criminals had on hand enough drugs to net them at least $25 million when sold.

In one gut-wrenching case, two nurses lied to investigators after a patient died at a VA hospital. They claimed they hadn’t “paused” the patient’s medication. They actually had. The patient died.

Curiously, one nurse was given only three months in the federal slammer, and the other one got six months. Even more curious, the judge gave them both until January to turn themselves in at the prison, noting the “circumstances of the offense.”

ADEA Protection The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) is your first defense against age discrimination. This is a federal law that says an employer cannot fire, refuse to hire, or treat you differently than other employees because of your age. Some examples of age discrimination include: ● You were fired because your boss wanted to keep younger workers who are paid less. ● You were turned down for a promotion, which went to someone younger hired from outside the company, because the boss says the company “needs new blood.” ● When company layoffs are announced, most of the persons laid off were older, while younger workers with less seniority and less on-the-job experience were kept on. ● Before you were fired, your supervisor made age-related remarks about you. ● You didn’t get hired because the employer wanted a younger-looking person to do the job.

The ADEA protects all workers and job applicants age 40 and over who work for employers that have 20 or more employees – including federal, state and local governments as well as employment agencies and labor unions.

If your workplace has fewer than 20 employees, you may still be protected under your state’s anti-age discrimination law.

Steps to Take If you think you are a victim of employment age discrimination, you may first want to talk to your supervisor informally or file a formal complaint with your company’s human resources department.

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, you should then file a charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) within 180 days from the date of the

Satin Glass Set Graced Victorian Table

A: Your set was made by Warner-Keffer China Company. They made semiporcelain dinnerware in East Liverpool, Ohio, from 1908 to 1910.

The letters included with the mark, “ELO,” stand for East Liverpool, Ohio, where the company was located. In addition to dinnerware, Warner-Keffer produced several lines of children’s tea sets decorated with nursery rhymes and Sun Bonnet Babies.

Children’s tea sets are highly prized by collectors.

Your early 20th-century set would probably be worth $175 to $225.

Q: This is a photo of a ruby glass

cracker jar, covered butter dish, covered sugar bowl and open bowl. They all have silver metal holders and are in excellent condition.

I also have a matching flower basket, creamer and several other pieces I can’t identify. They are all decorated with hand-painted enameled flowers.

I recently inherited this set and hope you can provide information on the glass, age, maker and its value.

A: You have a Victorian ruby satin glass

table set. Most table sets included a cream pitcher, sugar bowl, spoon holder, celery holder, butter dish and water pitcher. The flower basket could be a bride’s basket.

You didn’t mention a manufacturer’s mark on your set. Without a manufacturer’s mark on any of the glass or metal pieces, it can be impossible to identify the maker.

Your circa 1900 set would probably be worth $400 to $500.

Warner-Keffer China Company was located in East Liverpool, Ohio.

pan by Flambro Imports who were located in Atlanta. Emmett Kelly Jr. is the son of Emmett Kelly Sr., the original famous clown. Kelly Jr. continued the tradition of the forlorn-appearing clown, Weary Willie.

Values for your cookie jar are anywhere from several hundred to over $500 dollars.
