• The Amazon rainforest alone contributes an estimated 20 percent of Earth’s oxygen, while phytoplankton in the oceans contribute a whopping 70 percent.

• About 18% of the world’s forests are located within the boundaries of protected areas including national parks, game reserves, and conservation areas. Africa has the most with 31 percent, and Europe has the least at five percent.

• The tropical manchineel tree is the world’s most toxic tree, with all parts of it being deadly including the bark, leaves, fruit, and sap. Even the smoke from burning the wood and rain dripping off the leaves can sicken or be fatal to a human. Manchineel trees grow on coastal beaches and in brackish swamps, where it thrives among mangroves. In the U.S. they are mostly found in Florida.

• Pine trees are the world’s most common species, found on all continents except Antarctica.

• The rarest tree is the Pennantia baylisiana, which lives only on an island off New Zealand.

When goats were introduced to the island, they destroyed the trees until only one was left. Scientists are working to save the tree by rooting cuttings and germinating seeds.

A movie was in the preproduction stage before the writers’ and actors’ strikes, but now Harmon is worried that they won’t be able to coordinate all of the actors’ schedules. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Benji, a one-year-old German shepherd pup. Rarely do I meet a dog I don’t like, but shepherds hold a special place in my heart. We have two in the family right now.

The German shepherd is smart, sensitive and strong, equal parts soldier and sidekick, as comfortable in a police car as he is in a nursery.

The American Kennel Club describes this marvelous breed as follows: “Energetic and funloving, the breed is very fond of children once a relationship is established. He is a loyal family pet and a good guard dog, the ideal choice for many families.”

Loyal and protective -- desirable qualities in any family dog. But what happens when family members disagree on how to nurture these attributes?

Meet the Bickersons.

Mama Bickerson wants a family dog, a fun, friendly companion she can walk through their neighborhood, sit with at a cafe and play with in the park.

Papa Bickerson wants a guard dog who will intimidate potential intruders and take down those who persist.

New Trend: Japandi Style It seems only yesterday the word espresso went from ordering a coffee to the must-have color for everything concerning home decor. For nearly a decade, everyone everywhere wanted an espresso finish on their kitchen and bathroom cabinetry as well as on all case goods for their decor.

As with all things, the trend pendulum went the other way, toward bleached and pickled finishes. Open any design magazine and you’ll find plenty of choices from blonde to driftwood greige. So, as quickly as you have finished reading this sentence, the trends coming from the latest European furniture shows have everyone’s head spinning as new, dark finishes emerge: dark bottle green, gunmetal finishes and chocolate on everything from wood pieces to metal legs.

Today’s society is driven by machines and technology, so it is no surprise that when it comes to home decor, there is a necessity to embrace nature and emphasize the connection between human beings and nature. Women and Social Security -- Common Misunderstandings Whether you’re a man or woman, Social Security rules can sometimes be confusing and hard to understand. Today I’m going to go over some common misunderstandings that women have about their eligibility for benefits. And almost all these misunderstandings have to do with benefits they might be due from a spouse in addition to their own Social Security benefits.

Let me begin my clarification of these rules by making this general statement: If you have worked and earned your own Social Security benefit, you will almost always be paid that benefit first.

Only after you are getting your own retirement benefit will the Social Security Administration look to your husband’s record to see if you are due any additional spousal benefits. (The big exception to this rule applies to widows, as we shall learn later in this column.)

Many married women think they can take reduced benefits (at 62, for example) on a husband’s Social Security account and then at full retirement age, switch to full benefits on their own record. But that can’t be done. There is something called the “open-ended application rule” that essentially says if you file for one kind of Social Security benefit, you are “deemed” to be filing for any and all other benefits you might be due at the same time. So that means if you file for spousal benefits, you are also filing for your own Social Security benefits. (Although again, there is that exception that applies to widows.)

Speaking of widows, many women think that if they take reduced retirement benefits on their own Social Security record, that reduction will carry over to any future widow’s benefits they might be due. But that’s not the case. Your widow’s rate is based on one thing only -- how old you are when you start taking widow’s benefits. If you are over your full retirement age when that happens, you’re going to get a full widow’s benefit, no matter when you started your own benefits.

As I was writing the above couple sentences, I originally wrote down: “Your widow’s rate is based on one thing only: your age when your husband dies.” Many times, that’s the case. For example, if your husband dies when you are 64, and you start getting widow’s benefits then, your widow’s rate would be about 80% of your husband’s benefit. But, that 64-year-old woman could decide to take, or continue receiving, her own retirement benefits and delay filing for widow’s benefits until she reaches full retirement age. Widows are the only Social Security beneficiaries who can waive the deemed filing rule mentioned earlier and take reduced benefits on one record and later file for full benefits on another record.

Or lots of times, it’s to a woman’s advantage to start widow’s benefits first and delay her own retirement benefits until age 70. For example, that 64-year-old woman mentioned above could start off getting widow’s benefits. As I said, it would be about an 80% rate. If she could live on that until age 70, she could then switch to about 130% of her own retirement benefit.

What You Need to Know About Medicare Spouse Coverage DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Are spouses who have not worked outside the home eligible for Medicare benefits? I have worked most of my adult life, but my wife has been a mother and homemaker since we got married and hasn’t held an income-producing job since she was in college. Will she be eligible for Medicare?

-- Searching Spouse Dear Searching: There are many couples in your situation when it comes to applying for Medicare. The answer generally is yes, your spouse can qualify for Medicare on your work record. Here’s how it works.

Medicare Requirements Medicare, the government health insurance program for older adults, covers around 60 million Americans age 65 and older, as well as those younger that have a qualifying disability or have End-Stage Renal Disease.

To be eligible, you must have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years to qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A hospital coverage when you turn 65. If you qualify, then your non-working spouse will qualify too, based on your work record when she turns 65.

Divorced spouses are also eligible if they were married at least 10 years and are single, as are surviving spouses who are single and who were married for at least nine months before their spouse died.

In addition to Part A, both you and your spouse would also qualify for Medicare Part B, which covers doctor’s visits and other outpatient services, but requires a monthly premium. The premium for Part B beneficiaries in 2024 is $174.70 per month per person. Couples filing jointly with incomes over $206,000 per year pay even more.

There are also a number of other caveats you should know about depending on your wife’s age: Older Spouses If your wife is older than you, she can qualify for Medicare on your work record at age 65, even if you’re not getting Medicare yourself, but you must be at least 62 years old. You also must have been married for at least one year for your wife to apply for Medicare on your work record.

If you are still working and your wife is covered by your employer’s health insurance, she may want to enroll only in the premium-free Medicare Part A until you

retire, or your employer coverage ends. Part B – along with its premium – can be added later without penalty as long as your employer’s group health plan is your “primary coverage.” Check with your employers’ human resources department to find out about this.

(Note: If your wife is funding a health savings account, she may not want to take Part A because she can’t make contributions after she enrolls).

Younger Spouses If your wife is younger than you, she will need health insurance until she turns 65 and becomes eligible for Medicare. This may be through the Health Insurance Marketplace (see healthcare.gov), or if you’re still working, through COBRA (see dol.gov/general/ topic/health-plans/cobra).

Other Medicare Choices In addition to Medicare Part A and B, when you and your wife become Medicare eligible, each of you will also need to enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan if you don’t have credible drug coverage from your employer or union. And, you may want to purchase a Medicare supplemental (Medigap) policy too, to help pay for things that aren’t covered by Medicare like copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. Or, you may want to consider an all-in-one Medicare Advantage plan.

Whimsical Winged Kewpie Captures Hearts Q: I have been reading your column for years and have a question for you. Enclosed is a photo of a porcelain Kewpie doll that was given to me in 1950 by my greatgreat-aunt. She told me she got it in the 1920s.

Marked on its back is the name “Rose O’Neill” and it is in perfect condition. It is approximately 7 inches tall, has yellow hair, blue wings, rosy cheeks and toes.

I have treasured my Kewpies were the creation of Rose Kewpie all this O’Neill in 1912. time and want to give it to my granddaughter.

Anything you can tell me about it will be appreciated.

A: Rose O’Neill created the Kewpie image

in 1912 as illustrations for the Ladies’ Home Journal. She was an artist, illustrator, author and sculptor. She quickly realized the commercial value of her popular imp. Porcelain figures were produced by several Germany porcelain factories.

As demand grew for O’Neill’s Kewpies, a myriad of images were made that included paper dolls, banks, soaps, prints, celluloid and composition dolls, post cards, and salt and pepper shakers.

About 70 years ago, it was left at my parent’s home after a party, no one ever came back to claim it. It is decorated with sprigs of pink flowers against a white background and trimmed in gold. The overall measurements are 12 inches by 9 inches. I have never used it, and it is in excellent condition.

Folding Down for Speed The elbows aren’t typically in the big magazine articles when it comes to producing power or hitting better shots. Yet, allowing the arms to fold at the right time can certainly increase hand and clubhead speed. It’s not a matter of gluing the arms to the body so they have no choice but to fold in the swing, but understanding what each arm does at nearly equal opposite points in the swing.

When the hands are half way back and halfway through in the swing, the left and right elbows are folding fairly equally. The right arm in the backswing, and the left in the follow through.

The elbows should be pointing downward as well, not pointing to the horizon, and are separate from the body at this point.
