WINTER 2021

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

DEPARTMENT NEWS In this edition of the newsletter, we take a look back at the August TN-ACS Annual Meeting, the Tennessee Trauma Symposium and Tennessee Chapter ASMBS Annual Meeting. The ‘International Presence’ section highlights the inaugural Multicultural and Global Health Symposium hosted by UTHSC in November. In the spirit of giving thanks, we recognize our Department of Surgery Administration team and all their efforts managing our day-to-day business operations. Find out more about the team on page 5, ‘Meet the Department of Surgery Administrative Staff.’ Please be sure to stop by and thank them for all their hard work.

Welcome to the Winter 2021 edition of the UTHSC Department of Surgery newsletter. As we approach the end of the calendar year, in the midst of the holiday season, we can certainly reflect on a year of both change and success. The further diversification of our faculty across the hospital systems in Memphis has enhanced the future stability of the Department and has now allowed for greater programmatic growth in multiple specialties. In turn, we anticipate that this will translate into more robust training opportunities for our residents and fellows. Additionally, please join me in welcoming the plastic surgery faculty as a new Division in the Department of Surgery.

VICE CHAIR OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS Dr. Ankush Gosain, Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery has been appointed Vice Chair of Academic Affairs for a 2-year renewable term. Dr. Gosain will assist the Chair in the important mission of overseeing the academic advancement of the faculty members of the Department of Surgery. In this capacity, he will lead and serve as Chair of the Surgery Promotion and Tenure Committee. Dr. Gosain will also serve as liaison to the Associate Program Director of Research for the UTHSC General Surgery residency program.

Congratulations are due to several of our faculty who have been appointed to key leadership positions in either the Department or the College of Medicine. Dr. Andrew Kerwin and Dr. Ankush Gosain have been named Vice Chair of Faculty Development and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, respectively. In the area of education, Dr. Nia Zalamea has been named Assistant Dean of Student Affairs (Surgery) for the College of Medicine and Dr. Jeremiah (Jig) Deneve has been appointed Student Clerkship Director.

VICE CHAIR OF FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Dr. Andrew Kerwin, Professor and Chief, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care has been named Vice Chair of Faculty Development for a two-year renewable term. He will also assist the Chair in the maintenance and enhancement of the annual faculty evaluation process. Dr. Kerwin will serve as liaison to the Associate Program Director of Resident Wellness for the UTHSC General Surgery residency program.

Examples of unique strengths of our Department were highlighted by the UTHSC Multicultural and Global Health Symposium (spearheaded by Dr. Denis Foretia) and the strong presence of our faculty and residents at the Tennessee Chapter of the American College of Surgeons hosted in Memphis this past August. These accomplishments are further highlighted in the current edition of our newsletter. Once again, we have much to be grateful for and I look forward to an extraordinary 2022. Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a safe and happy holiday season and a very prosperous New Year.

ASSISTANT DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS Dr. Nia Zalamea, Assistant Professor, Division of General Surgery has been appointed Assistant Dean of Student Affairs (Surgery). WINTER 2021

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE THE INAUGURAL MULTICULTURAL AND GLOBAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM The Center for Multicultural and Global Health (CMGH) at UTHSC hosted its inaugural Multicultural and Global Health Symposium on Saturday, November 6 in Memphis. The symposium brought together speakers from Memphis, the U.S. and around the world to discuss the subject of “Re-Imagining Multicultural and Global Health in the Age of COVID.” Denis Foretia, MD, assistant professor of surgery at UTHSC and a member of the executive board of the UTHSC Center for Multicultural and Global Health noted that the symposium was the first big step in bringing together the entire community to talk about multicultural and global health.

Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, MD, executive vice president of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and chair of the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine gave the keynote speech. Sudha Jayaraman, MD, MSc, FACS, professor of surgery and director of the Center for Global Surgery at the University of Utah; Peter Waiswa, PhD, professor of Health Policy and Planning, School of Public Health, Makerere University in Uganda; and Dwomoa Adu, MD, of the Department of Nephrology at Korle Bo Teaching Hospital at the University of Ghana Medical School in Accra discussed sustainable global health. Sommer Aldulaimi, MD, FAAFP, associate professor of family and community medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson and co-director of the Global and Border Health Program; and Ellen Beck, PhD, professor of family and community medicine at the University of California, San Diego addressed refugee and immigrant health and the crisis on the southern border. The UTHSC CMGH was launched earlier this year. It materialized from experience acquired through another outreach organization at UTHSC, the Global Surgery Institute (GSI). The College of Medicine founded the GSI in 2017 to strengthen and support surgical mission work that was already being done across specialties. So many UTHSC faculty members and students were interested in or were already involved with health outreach in the U.S. and abroad that it soon became clear the endeavor was bigger than the GSI. In many ways, the CMGH is a natural progression of the GSI; its mission is to develop access to multicultural health care delivery, address global health challenges, and train the next generation of global health leaders. As part of its outreach, UTHSC has established a partnership with Levy Mwanawasa Medical University in Lukasa, Zambia. Partnerships have also been established in the Philippines and with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.

WINTER 2021

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE CONTINUED PAUL NEMIR, JR./WILLIAM NOVICK GLOBAL SURGERY INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS The GSI and CMGH facilitate learning, participation and collaboration in global surgical work. However, financial challenges are a significant barrier to those wishing to participate internationally. For this reason, the GSI support fund was launched in 2017 for resident travel expenses. The GSI is now pleased to announce the formation of the Paul Nemir, Jr./William Novick Global Surgery Institute Scholarship for Medical Students. This scholarship is an extension of the generosity of Emilie de Hellebranth, who out of deep interest in international child health, established the Paul Nemir, Jr., M.D. Endowed Professorship in International Child Health and the Nemir International Child Health Endowment Fund at the UTHSC College of Medicine. To honor Dr. Nemir’s legacy and in continuation of the missions to train young physicians and improve children’s health internationally, Dr. William Novick was named the Paul Nemir, Jr. Endowed Professor of Surgery and International Child Health. Dr. Novick has since devoted over 20 years of his career to the cardiac care of children worldwide. He spends six months out of the year providing life-saving surgery to the most vulnerable in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and beyond. It is through the support of the Nemir Endowments, Dr. Novick’s generosity, and a legacy of life-saving global health and surgical work, that we are privileged to name this scholarship.
