Mission Statement The mission of the USTA Missouri Valley is to promote and develop the growth of tennis. United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley is a not-for-profit organization covering a five-state region of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, as well as parts of Illinois. As one of the 17 sections of the USTA, USTA Missouri Valley has more than 21,000 individual members and 300 organizational members. USTA Missouri Valley offers recreational and competitive tennis for all ages and abilities. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2020 is the Centennial year for USTA Missouri Valley. We have so much rich history within our section and we will be celebrating our past as we continue to prepare for the future! This year we are focused on communication and education for our communities, providers, and players as we transition to a more unified pathway. There will be many opportunities within your communities to participate in and attend various training and education sessions. We will continue to partner schools with local providers so that young players will have the opportunity to enjoy our sport after school hours. We will also have a renewed focus on all things adult from Tennis on Campus, social play, and Cardio Tennis, to our more competitive adult leagues and tournament play. We couldn’t continue to grow and achieve these goals without strong leadership to guide us. A huge thanks to our fabulous and passionate volunteers for continuing to support our communities in growing the game! Our volunteers help fuel our momentum. We have many opportunities for everyone to get involved and help shape the future of tennis in USTA Missouri Valley.

2019 ANNUAL CONFERENCE More than 200 people attended the USTA Missouri Valley Annual Conference December 5-7 at the Olathe Conference Center in Olathe, Kansas. The weekend was a great success filled with education, networking, reconnecting with friends, and sending attendees out with inspiration and new ideas for the New Year. The conference saw many trainings and workshops, covering topics such as local play opportunities, developing the Net Generation pathway, Junior Team Products, USTA Leagues, and more. Multiple committee meetings were held in order to make decisions that would shape the upcoming year of tennis and take a look back at the many tennis accomplishments in 2019. Fellowship, laughter, and newborn friendships could be found in the Welcome Reception, where guests enjoyed food and drinks, the announcement of the Centennial Community Campaign in 2020 was made and the year-long celebration of USTA Missouri Valley’s 100th Anniversary in 2020 was kicked off with a history display and a video looking back on the section’s history over the past 100 years. The weekend was capped off with an exciting Awards and Hall of Fame Luncheon, celebrating the past year of growth in tennis and giving awards to over 30 deserving individuals who have made notable accomplishments in local tennis this year. The USTA Missouri Valley was also proud to induct three new members into the USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Fame—Kilmeny Waterman Connor, Craig Sandvig, and Pam Sloan.

2019 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES Kilmeny Waterman Connor has excelled in the tennis world since her early years as a player, and still today as a teacher, coach, and organizer of tennis. As a junior player, Kilmeny maintained a USTA national ranking along with becoming the 1980 Missouri State High School Girls Singles Champion. Her success continued as a scholarship varsity player at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Kilmeny competed on the Women’s Professional Tennis Circuit and later won three gold, seven silver and three bronze balls at national tournaments. Connor also coached at City College of San Francisco, the University of Wyoming, and most notably as Head Coach of the University of Kansas. Along with her career as a player and L-R: Kilmeny Waterman Connor, Craig Sandvig and Pamela Sloan. coach, Kilmeny also impacted tennis in her various roles coordinating, teaching, and directing junior tennis at local clubs and academies along with being intricately involved in many committees and charitable foundations for local tennis, collegiate tennis, and most notably her family’s foundation known as the Stephanie Waterman Foundation. Craig Sandvig’s impact on St. Louis area tennis is second to none. Growing up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sandvig was a top-ranked USTA Northern junior player, representing his section in the Junior Davis Cup Competition and his high school as a five-time state champion. Sandvig continued to excel as both a student and a tennis player at the University of Iowa before he went on to play on the European Pro Circuit. In 1971, Sandvig retired his tennis career and moved to St. Louis in order to pursue his graduate degree at Washington University, where he would also become Head Coach of the men’s tennis team. Six years later, Sandvig was invited to spearhead a now nationally-recognized junior tennis program at Sunset Tennis Center, where he has remained for over 40 years. As a top coach and USPTA Elite Pro for 30+ years, Sandvig would coach ten state high school champions, many nationally ranked junior players and future Division I college tennis players, along with district, section, and national championship-earning USTA adult teams. During this time, he would also take a trip to Nairobi, Kenya to deliver tennis supplies to local youth and put on a two-week tennis camp. His coaching efforts were rewarded as he was named the USPTA Missouri Valley Missouri Pro of the Year in 2001, USTA Tennis National Recognition Program All-American Team in 2003, and USTA Missouri Valley Outstanding Contributor to the USTA League Tennis Program in 2005. Over the course of his career, Sandvig has also served USTA Missouri Valley and USTA St. Louis extensively, earning five USTA St. Louis Awards including the 2013 Distinguished Service Award. Pam Sloan’s passion for tennis was sparked when she began playing as a teenager, and then further set ablaze as an adult working in the Parks and Recreation system when she was sent to a tennis workshop in Dallas. Since then, Sloan has successfully fought to restore tennis within the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department, with the results of her work drawing in thousands of players, several NJTL programs, and many junior and adult tournaments. A standout accomplishment during this period is her successful formation of an NJTL program that would see 1200 children, many of which would go on to play tennis in high school, college, and even professionally. Sloan has served at every level within USTA Missouri Valley, most notably as a two-term President from 1999-2002. A few of her nine servicebased awards from USTA Missouri Valley, USTA, or her work in the Parks and Recreation system include the “Outstanding Service Award” from USTA for her NJTL work, the “Distinguished Service Award” from USTA Missouri Valley, and the “Exceptional Service Award” from Kansas City Parks and Recreation. In 2004, Sloan’s profession carried her to California to become the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Stockton, and her commitment to tennis stayed true as she quickly became involved in several committees and as a national USTA and USTA Northern California Board Member. Along with staying intricately involved with her local USTA section, Sloan has also served extensively for USTA nationally—in the past 25+ years, she has served on 27 national committees, task forces, or projects and on the USTA Board of Directors. Sloan has used her career as a consultant and within the Parks and Recreation systems to promote the game of tennis and carry on the mission of making tennis accessible in public parks everywhere, with her work in this field being crowned in 2016 when she was awarded the National Public Parks Tennis Association Jean and Hollis Smith Lifetime Achievement Award.

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE YOUTH TENNIS Net Generation is the USTA’s youth (ages 5-18) tennis brand, dedicated to welcoming millions of new players to the game by focusing on empowerment, unity, and play. Through a comprehensive program of adaptable curricula, teaching and learning tools, promotional and communications materials, and player and provider incentives, Net Generation aims to capture the imagination of kids of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, and bring together parents, coaches, teachers, and volunteers all throughout the country. Net Generation provides a single registration platform for programs across the country and also requires all deliverers to have completed a background screen and an education program for working with minors. Net Generation will always be committed to the safety and well-being of all players with an emphasis on building character on and off the court. Net Generation makes tennis approachable, accessible, adaptable & fun. It contains curricula, resources, education & marketing support to help grow the game. The Youth Progression Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. Player’s advancement in orange and green ball is determined by the number of stars and trophies they have earned, which are awarded for playing in Youth Progression tournaments (Smashers) and participating on a 10 & Under Junior Team Tennis team. Team Tennis offers girls and boys the opportunity to play on teams in local play opportunities that emphasizes character development, developing skills, play opportunities and fun. The following programs are offered under our USTA Team Tennis umbrella: Team Challenge is an introduction to tennis competition offering a low-pressure team environment for children of all ages to develop their skills through level-based play, without an emphasis on instruction or results. Players are expected to drop hit serve from the service line over the net and sustain a modified rally (trapping or bumping). It is designed to be delivered as a single event or a series of up to six events, with the objective of providing a fun and social environment that highlights character and skill development. Team Tournament is an innovative way for players to enjoy tennis competition in a low-pressure team environment. This experience will encourage players of all ages to gain match experience, develop their skills through level-based play, and demonstrate good sportsmanship. Players are expected overarm serve into the appropriate service bo and sustain a hitting rally. It is designed to be delivered as a single event or a series of up to six events, with the objective of providing a fun and social environment that highlights character and skill development. In Junior Team Tennis teams and players are matched by similar age and ability using the Junior National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). Players are expected to be able to serve, rally and score. A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division. Junior Tennis Team follows two tracks to provide opportunities to players of all abilities: Local Junior Team Tennis or Championship Junior Team Tennis. The local track allows kids and team organizers to play on the local level with more flexible structures, while the championship track provides teams the opportunity to advance to our district, section or national championships. Teams play against each other in one of the following divisions based on age and skill level: 10 & under: orange and green ball local and district Junior Team Tennis opportunities 12 & under: green and yellow ball local, district and section Junior Team Tennis opportunities - Eligible to advance to district and section championships (12U green ball) 14 & under: Intermediate or Advanced: yellow ball local, district and section Junior Team Tennis opportunities - Eligible to advance to district, section & national championships 18 & under: Intermediate or Advanced: yellow ball local, district and section Junior Team Tennis opportunities - Eligible to advance to district, section & national championships Junior Tournaments give players the opportunity to advance their game by competing in match play situations against peers with similar skill levels. Competing in junior tournaments will help players learn the skill sets necessary to take their game to the next level – high school, college or the pros. There are many play opportunities available at the district, section and national levels. Junior competition includes events for everyone- from first time competitors to top level tournaments for more experienced competitors. USTA Missouri Valley tournaments offer many different formats that give you many opportunities to compete. COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE Tennis in Schools is designed to introduce the sport to youth through PE classes and extracurricular activities. Children will learn the basics of tennis in PE class, and then have the opportunity to transition their skills through games in afterschool programs. The USTA Missouri Valley can provide free teacher workshops that demonstrate lessons from the Net Generation tennis curriculum which has been vetted and approved by SHAPE America®, the leading organization who sets the national standards for physical education. There are elementary, middle, and high school workshops available. This curriculum has been developed for teachers with large numbers of students in schools without traditional tennis courts. Register your program on usta.com and receive FREE school curriculum and resources, plus other additional benefits. Once you are registered, our section staff can help connect you with a School Partner to receive free equipment and help provide your students with continued opportunities in tennis. Schools with a USTA membership may access additional discounted equipment and grants for equipment or to initiate afterschool programming. usta.com/schooltennis The USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The NJTL mission is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, while instilling in these young people the values of leadership and academic excellence. The program gives all kids (regardless of income, race, or gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so that they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport. The NJTL program is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a, team-oriented, safe environment. NJTL offers a variety of on and off-court programming, emphasizing educational and life-skill components to enhance overall development. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant. NJTL chapters are divided into differen’t levels, within the USTA, based on size and programming the chapter is able to provide.
ADULT TENNIS Varsity Collegiate Tennis in the United States provides opportunities for thousands of players to continue their tennis careers while also earning a college degree. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a season-ending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. The USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be flexible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Players who choose the more competitive route will have the opportunity to compete against Tennis on Campus teams from not only across the USTA Missouri Valley, but the country as well. This includes university hosted invitationals, the Missouri Valley Fall Invitational and Section Championship, and a National Championship event. This provides a great opportunity for players to compete against and form friendships with competitors from universities across the country. USTA League Tennis is one of the most successful recreational sports programs in the country. Players can make friends and compete not only in matches against players with similar abilities, but also as part of a team. USTA Leagues has more than 26,000 participants in the USTA Missouri Valley and includes almost one million players from all across the nation, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. In addition to competing locally, you can vie for district, section and even national championships – just as long as your team keeps winning. Players range in age from 18 to 90 (and beyond), so there’s a team for you to play singles, doubles or mixed. Adult Social Leagues are offered throughout the country, and can satisfy your desire for competition while keeping the focus on having fun, meeting new people and hanging out with friends. From “Sets in the City” to 18-39 young-adult leagues to mixed doubles and post-match happy hours, there are a variety of play options available. So, if you’re looking for a fresh and exciting, low pressure tennis experience, adult social tennis is for you! COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE There are many adult and senior tournaments offered at the district and section level. These tournaments are for players of all levels and players can enter to compete in either singles or doubles. These tournaments match players by skill level or age and they are a great way to maintain or improve your tennis skills playing against new competitors who are on your level. You can even play in NTRP Section Qualifying tournaments for your chance to compete at the national level. Any new tournament players ages 18-39 who are competing in their first Section-Level tournament will receive FREE tournament registration. PROFESSIONAL TENNIS The USTA Pro Circuit was formed in 1979 to provide players with an opportunity to gain the professional ranking points they need to compete on the major pro tours. Pro Circuits have grown into the largest developmental tennis circuit in the world, consisting of approximately 100 tournaments and offering nearly $3 million in prize money. Many of today’s top players began their professional tennis careers by competing on the USTA Pro Circuit – Jon Isner, Jack Sock, Madison Keys, and Sloane Stephens, to name a few. In 2020, the USTA Pro Circuit has several tournaments scheduled in USTA Missouri Valley. This gives our local communities the opportunity to see professional tennis players up close, and to become involved with the tournament activities. Our host sites rely on local tennis enthusiasts to help with many aspects of the tournament. In addition, most host sites provide community involvement events such as clinics run by the players, pro-ams, kids’ days, and more. World Team Tennis returns to the USTA Missouri Valley in July. The Springfield Lasers, the 2019 World TeamTennis Champions, are ready for a three-peat! The 2020 season will run from July 12 to August 1, with professional tennis players bringing some of the finest tennis around to our section. OTHER PROGRAMS Diversity and Inclusion Statement: Embracing diversity and encouraging multicultural outreach efforts is essential to achieving the USTA Missouri Valley’s mission to grow the sport of tennis. We are committed to fostering a tennis environment that is more inclusive and inviting to all people. In working to expand the image of tennis, the USTA Missouri Valley is focused on broadening and increasing diverse participation in the sport and serving as a model for all organizations that aspire to successful growth and an inclusive environment. Adaptive Tennis recognizes four main categories of disabilities: 1) Developmentally disabled (learning disabilities, Autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities). 2) Physically disabled (birth defects, Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, Muscular Dystrophy, hearing impaired, stroke, etc.) 3) Consumers of mental health services (psychiatrically disabled, emotionally disturbed). 4) At risk/ environmentally disabled (substance abusers, mentally and physically abused, homeless, HIV positive individuals, persons within the juvenile justice system, etc.). For each of these groups, USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Tennis provides grant money, equipment and resources for specifically-tailored programs that provide fun, fitness and a positive social experience for participants. Regional clinics and instructional programs are held throughout the country. The enjoyment, physical well-being and contact shared by participants have proven to be positive sources of self-esteem, helping open doors to a more positive lifestyle. USTA Adaptive Tennis program works to provide opportunities to all populations to enjoy and realize the benefits of tennis and its life changing opportunities. Wheelchair Tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, USTA offers programs geared toward the wheelchair player. Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. USTA Wheelchair Tennis programs provide persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing USTA Wheelchair Tennis adds to the socialization and normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability. 16
COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE The thousands of public parks in local communities across the U.S. have long been hotbeds for the growth of tennis. Indeed, many of the game’s greatest players got their starts playing in public parks. Recognizing the importance of public parks in the long-term health and growth of the sport, the USTA’s Tennis in the Parks initiative provides resources designed to help establish, grow and sustain tennis programming in public parks across the nation. Community Tennis Associations (CTAs) are not-for-profit, volunteer-based organizations supporting programs that grow the game of tennis. They are located in towns across the section and are great entry points if you’re looking to get started in the game, to play more often or to give back to our lifetime sport. First and foremost, CTAs work to coordinate and maintain tennis programs and services, guaranteeing that they are open and accessible to everyone. Those who run CTAs are tennis enthusiasts who act as advocates, program administrators, promoters or fundraisers – and sometimes as all of these things at once. USTA MISSOURI VALLEY RESOURCES USTA Missouri Valley hosts hundreds of tournaments a year and none of them would be possible without the use of officials. If you are interested in becoming an official, there is an on-going program for the recruitment and training of new officials that offers an opportunity for tennis enthusiasts to become involved in a variety of officiating roles. These roles range from overseeing local junior/senior tournaments and collegiate events, to officiating on-court at the US Open. There are numerous volunteer opportunities within the USTA. Volunteers may serve on committees, assist at tournaments and events and assist in many more ways. Every district has different needs and different volunteer opportunities. Whatever your interests or talents, there is definitely a volunteer opportunity for you. Coaching: You’ve already got the love for the game. We’ll give you the ideas, activities and tools you need to help your students improve their games and you advance your programs. Players and aspiring players turn to coaches to learn the basics of tennis, refine their swings, fine-tune their serves and advance their skills as they continue their development and personal pursuitof our lifetime sport. Grants: Tennis opportunities at the most grassroots level are critical to keeping the sport vibrant and growing. USTA and USTA Missouri Valley offer a variety of grants to help grow the game of tennis in many ways. The section offers two different section grants to tennis providers across its five-state area. Our Serving Up Tennis grant is intended to assist not-for-profit organizations in initiating or expanding their tennis programming activities, and our Grow the Game grant provides funding for USTA Member providers that do not fall under the not-for-profit status to help initiate or expand community tennis activities. 2020 USTA MISSOURI VALLEY JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS The USTA Missouri Valley is proud to be one of the first sections to pilot the national 2021 Junior tour efforts. By aligning our junior structure to USTA national guidelines one year early, the Junior Competition Committee hopes it will give players, parents, and coaches a smoother transition into the following cycle. Starting in January 2020, players will have more ability to compete in the different districts, adjust to the nationally mandated ranking system, and have the added benefit of playing tennis in a seven-level junior structure. Celebrating 100 Years of Growing the Game

On March 20, 1920, the USTA Missouri Valley will celebrate its 100th anniversary. During that momentous month of March, when representatives from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma gathered together in St. Louis to form the Missouri Valley Tennis Association (now known as the USTA Missouri Valley), a century of tennis greatness was born. From the very first President, James H. Cravens, to our current President, Lisa Minihan, and all 35 Presidents in between, the USTA Missouri Valley has been led through a rich tennis history. The USTA Missouri Valley is incredibly proud of the way these leaders have carried us through years of growth, momentous achievements, and a tennis revival. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, just after the USTA Missouri Valley was founded, tennis began to grow in popularity and be seen as more accessible—a lifetime sport for everyone. In the forties and fifties, after life began to go back to normal after World War 2, the USTA Missouri Valley nearly doubled in size. In the sixties and seventies, the game was changed drastically when Billie Jean King and Wilson introduced the first steel racquet and Kansas City sports legend Lamar Hunt introduced the optic yellow tennis balls we still use today.

In the eighties and nineties, the USTA Missouri Valley expanded its influence by introducing the USTA League programs, NJTL and Tennis in the Hood events to reach inner-city communities, and aiming to grow tennis in schools and recreational programs. Some of the biggest names in tennis history are rooted in the USTA Missouri Valley, including Kenny Flach, Butch Bucholz, Jimmy Connors, and Arthur Ashe, who set countless records and won over a dozen combined Grand Slams. Few names, though, are as influential to tennis as St. Louis native Dwight Davis. Davis’s passion for the game and for local parks led forth to a surge of public tennis courts within parks furthering the growth of tennis in their local communities. The accomplishments of all of these tennis legends paved the way for the USTA Missouri Valley’s next generation of homegrown professional stars, including Jack Sock, Madison Keys, Nick Taylor, and Casey Ratzlaff. The USTA Missouri Valley has undergone many changes and seen tremendous growth, and it continues to change and grow for the better every day. The USTA Missouri Valley plans to celebrate this momentous year and our notable history accordingly, starting with our Centennial Community Campaign (see insert below) and continuing throughout all of our section level events in 2020.

Centennial Community Campaign 2020 marks an important year in USTA Missouri Valley history—our 100th anniversary. In honor of this historic year, the USTA Missouri Valley is giving back in an equally historic way. In what will be titled our Centennial Community Campaign, the USTA Missouri Valley is awarding $100,000 in grants to organizations, foundations, and community youth initiatives.
A few youth players from the section, along with several staff members, helped stage the surprise announcement at the USTA Missouri Valley Annual Conference this past December. The USTA Missouri Valley looks forward to giving back to the community and our youth in this commemorative year-long celebration campaign, and we hope you will enjoy seeing the spotlights shine on each of these grant recipients. Junior Competition Changes By Amber Gerdes
USTA Missouri Valley implemented new changes to the junior structure which went into effect on January 1, 2020. The USTA Missouri Valley competition staff and Junior Competition Committee have worked to create a system that will benefit the overall well-being of the junior players. Players, parents, and coaches will receive education materials, access to webinars and trainings, and further communication regarding structure changes. The USTA Missouri Valley has released new rules, rankings, and tournaments in accordance with the changes from the USTA National office that will be fully implemented across the country by January 1, 2021. Why is the USTA Missouri Valley implementing the new structure changes in 2020?
1. Educate and assimilate the junior tennis community one year earlier than the national rollout. 2. Ensure a smooth transition to the new national structure in 2021. 3. Restructure the districts for consistent language and a consistent tournament structure. 4. Open up district opportunities for players. 5. Provide extra levels of play in 2020; all levels of players have more opportunities in growing and enjoying his/her tennis.
As the USTA National office continues to release information, it is important for you to know which rules apply directly to the USTA Missouri Valley in 2020 as they will differ slightly throughout this year. Here are the top ten things to know for the 2020 Junior Tournament changes in the USTA Missouri Valley:
1. Tournament levels increase from 5 to 7; with L6 and L7 up to two and one day event, respectively. 2. All L3-L7 tournaments will select from USTA Missouri Valley Standings List (no endorsement, no earned qualifier). There will be no District Standings Lists. 3. Rankings will include the best of six singles and six doubles, no more than three singles and three doubles from sanctioned tournaments L1-L3- National, or ITF (who uses TDM). Exception: BG12s will include up to two single and two doubles from L1-L3- National, or ITF (who uses TDM). 4. USTA Missouri Valley will use the new Points Tables for all level tournaments. 5. In 2020, USTA Missouri Valley L3-L7 tournaments are only for USTA Missouri Valley section players to register. 6. Draw sizes for L3 and L4 are 32 players per division. 7. USTA Missouri Valley L3 and L4 Indoor events are singles only; USTA Missouri Valley L3 and L4 Outdoor events offer singles and doubles. 8. Cross district play with L5 Open versus two L5 Closed tournaments in each district. 9. L6 and L7 events will be open and may have limited draws. 10. USTA membership required to play L1-L7; player must be either 11 years of age or completed USTA’s 10 and Under Youth Progression.

MADISON KEYS’ RUN OF SUCCESS Our hometown hero, Rock Island, Ill. native Madison Keys, has been crushing it on huge stages lately, starting with her advancing to the round of 16 at the US Open in September. Her success didn’t stop there. She surprised the world at the 2020 Brisbane International Tennis Tournament in January when she became the first American woman to feature in the singles title match since 2014. Later in January, Keys yet again made our section proud as she took down Dutch player Arantxa Rus to reach the third round of the Australian Open. Keys continues to shatter personal records and inspire the youth of our section; we can’t wait to watch her bring home her first Grand Slam title soon.

THREE PROGRAMS AWARDED WHEELCHAIR GRANTS Three programs within USTA Missouri Valley were awarded a USTA Wheelchair Tennis Grassroots grant in January. Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Neb., Santa Fe Life Center in Oklahoma City and Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis were among the 33 wheelchair tennis programs nationwide chosen for their support to promote and develop the growth of wheelchair tennis and use the sport to help build stronger, healthier communities. Madonna Rehabilitation Center, in partnership with Woods Tennis Center, uses tennis as part of their rehabilitation for patients in care at their facility. They also offer junior wheelchair lessons and help organize adult wheelchair tennis. In addition, they help facilitate and fundraise for an annual wheelchair tournament. “From coaching to facilities to equipment, this club has invested in everything possible to provide toptier tennis to the wheelchair community. They are an example of passion and excellence to us all,” said USTA Oklahoma Diversity & Inclusion Chair Emmy Tigert. SPRING SERVE 2020 USTA.COM/USTAMISSOURIVALLEY
Dwight Davis Tennis has continually displayed a strong involvement in the wheelchair tennis community, most notably with their Gerber Wheelchair Tennis Program and as the host of the USTA US Open Wheelchair Championships partnering with the Gateway Confluence Wheelchair Sports Foundation. “The USTA is proud to award these grants to deserving wheelchair tennis organizations in recognition of their commitment in promoting and growing the sport of wheelchair tennis,” said Joanne Wallen, Director Adult Competition, USTA. “These grants are a part of a continued effort to expand programs that support the wheelchair community through tennis and foster growth and success in players.”
Jane Hines of Omaha, Neb., and Sara Rasmussen of Wichita, Kan., have both been named winners of Racquet Sports Industry magazine (formerly Tennis Industry magazine)’s 2019 Champions of Tennis Awards in the publication’s January 2020 issue. Hines was awarded Adaptive Tennis Champion of the Year, with Racquet Sports Industry publishing this paragraph in the magazine:

About 15 years ago, while working at a Nebraska Special Olympics tennis event, Jane Hines felt compelled to establish a year-round tennis program for adaptive athletes, so Special Olympians can play in organized programs for more than just the six weeks prior to the state event. Starting with seven athletes in 2005, Hines and colleague Tammy Hill created Omaha “Tennis Buddies,” which has now grown to 45 players. Just as importantly, Tennis Buddies programs have sprouted in other communities throughout USTA Missouri Valley. In getting Tennis Buddies off the ground, Hines assumed many roles, including grant writer, webmaster, photographer, mentor, tournament director and cheerleader. In 2011, she was on the steering committee that created an event for all these programs to come together for a friendly annual competition called the Fred Johnson ALL Stars Event, attracting more than 100 athletes.
Rasmussen was honored as Youth Tennis Provider of the Year, with Racquet Sports Industry sharing this paragraph: Sara Rasmussen, RSI’s Youth Tennis Provider of the Year, personifies the servant-leadership philosophy, first exemplified in her role as director of local community centers, where she incorporated youth tennis instruction. In 2018, Rasmussen became director of the Ralph Wulz Riverside Tennis Center, an indoor/outdoor facility in Wichita, Kan. Under her direction and tireless work, Riverside serves all facets of community youth players. Rasmussen organizes USTA Smashers events, Team Challenges, Junior Tournaments, Junior Team Tennis, lessons and more. She helps with Net Generation events and organizes free community lessons. Riverside is now the largest Net Generation School Partner in USTA Kansas. “Sara’s energy and commitment to junior tennis show me the kids have a great future in the sport,” says former district president Ron Wherritt.

USTA KANSAS NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR USTA Kansas is excited to announce that Becky Mann Samaniego has accepted the position of Executive Director for USTA Kansas. Becky has served as the District League Coordinator for the past year. Becky lives in Wichita, is a lifelong tennis player, and played varsity tennis for Baker University. She is a practicing attorney, specializing in family law. She’s currently president of the Wichita Bar Association Board of Governors and is active in many other community organizations as well. Her experience in nonprofit and legal sectors will serve the organization well as we strive to grow the game of tennis.

What is a SMASHERS tournament? 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized equipment. Red, orange, and green tennis balls bounce lower, they don't move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Kids tennis racquets are sized for small hands and courts are smaller and easier to cover. By using this format, the benefits are immediate and within a short time kids are rallying, playing, and excited to keep playing. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration.
