Coming from an extensive background in music and working with many indie artists for many years, I wanted to do more to help those creative souls who travel a hard road exposing their talents. As the shift in resources and outlets for indie artists become limited or pose as a high-end investment requirement, many artists today soon give up and silence their voice. There had to be a way to help give them to be heard beyond the lyrics of their music...thus we create Musiek Magazine. My hopes are to highlight indie artists who deserve a platform to speak and encourage other artists through their stories & experiences not to give up on their craft. I truly want everyone to share this magazine not just to make this magazine "hot" but to help the artists we highlight reach more people through our publication. I'm excited for all that we will accomplish with Musiek Magazine and I look forward to helping many artists reach new heights through our publication. My goal has always ben to introduce to others the talent and abilities of those that are around us daily. My experiences with artists of various genres and talent gives a unique perspective to their dreams and goals, and that needs to be shared to the masses. I still remember sitting in a cafeteria talking to two brothers that told me of their music and how they are going to NY and become famous. While listening to their demo, I was amazed by their talent. Those brothers were KC and Jo Jo. , And well, you know the rest‌.. Working with DeMario, I know Musiek will be a vehicle for those artists, producers, DJs and venues that remember the beauty of music and how it connects us. To sit and listen to the first tracks , the story of sacrifice, and the success gained. This is the purpose of Musiek!

In Area 15, as you enter into the “NODA Realm” there’s a place where the art of blending and mixing is second nature, and a brother that is akin to a professor at a college university….. When entering the building, you ears are met with syncopating beats and mixes at a high volume, blending and rising to a pitch from behind a white door with a note stating “class in session.” Then amidst the beats and rhythm, a voice states “that’s it…bring it in..that’s smooth!” That’s Claude Whitfield, hands on polychoral professor, musical mentor to many that wise to learn the art of the DJ. 22

day we make sure they get the gift and we make sure we touch all learning styles.

So, how has WTHandz Academy shaped the perceptions of DJs today? CW: Since the inception of With These Handz DJ Academy the DJs & The DJs that I’ve had the honor of building relationships with have shared their appreciation for our academy, including taking the time to educate upcoming DJs and the community about the history, sport and art form of DJing & turntablisim. WTH has not only inspired D.Js to perfect their skills but to assist education others. There’s a lot of diversity and talent that is produced within the academy, what are your views on that? CW: well at WTHandz…we pride ourselves on reaching a diverse crowd, Music is a universal language, it's not like sports where we easily try to put a race to a specific sport....i.e… like most people think that hockey is limited to one culture or race. As far as producing talent, we have a team of great instructors and yes we are D.Js but we are teachers first and at the end of the

In the time it has grown, what would you say are the most prominent moments of WTHandz? CW: There have been many prominent times for WTHandz... To name a few was when I received my first sponsorship from Sam Ash, after meeting with them and at first being denied. The second was when my wife told me I should move out of the first building I had in the music factory. So after considerable thought and swallowing my pride, I did so, which led to a sponsorship from Mecklenburg County Park & Rec and a partnership with Imaginon and the Arts & Science Counsel. Then, when I stood in front of the mayor and assembled councilmen with the launching of Turntabilisim as a sport. Followed by my partnership with Kevin Hyrams, signing a major deal with Sprite, winning multiple awards as well as the best of Charlotte. and my favorite: seeing a young student of mine named Mvee take his career to a major level. Lol..to name a few... What’s next for this organization? CW: The future is very bright and my team and I look forward to the 2015 year. We will be launching our production division , work more with CMS as we have in the past and stay student focused...and oh yeah....we will continue to deliver quality events! We're always looking for instructors and just people that want to be a part of something great. Candice RnB What is your biggest influence in music? CRNB: R&B simply, just bringing real music back, you know what I mean? Being in the studio and actually doing bridges and hooks, that’s my influence. When I see Ne-Yo going there, or any artist for that matter taking their time to write music and perform. Brings it back to the old days, I would think R&B is my influence, if that makes sense? 26

It definitely does! And it’s interesting because we've heard so many accolades about your abilities and gifts, yet the main term used so many times is "unfiltered” shed a little light on that for us, define your view of "unfiltered." CRNB : Well, my definition is just "raw" or "uncut." Others might say "she’s' got a potty mouth" but I'm grown, I say what I want to say and do what I want to do, I’m a realest, I keep it real! A lot of the music that you make, seems to

demo the song, I then sang the song, and he was like "I don’t want to give it away!" So I had the song for two years before it was released, which to me was a big blessing because I mean he didn’t need me to sing the record, you know. So I’m very thankful for his believing in me. How has Ne-Yo influenced your style, or work ethic? CRNB: I’ve been with Ne-Yo at parties, late nights, radio, everything like that, and he never gets tired, and if he does, he doesn’t show it....you know what I mean. Even like with music, he is focused. If I’m in the studio, and he's written a song for me, he is hands on reviewing and in there until I'm done singing the last word. He is very into it, and his passion for the music gives me a deeper passion for my work as well. So…what’s next for Candice RNB? CRNB: Man...The sky is the limit from what I’ve heard! We are definitely going to do albums and tours and shows. My main thing is touring and getting the music out.

show a side of strength, a sense of assuredness with yourself, if that correct to say? CRNB: Well, I like to think of it as woman power. Not so much as “ Oh, I’m hurt or sad” or “I miss him” I can get over it, I can overcome it. Keep it moving, so on and so forth. Ok, so the single that’s creating the buzz.... ...."Lesbians!" NeYo played a part in the making of this single? CRNB: Yes, actually he wrote the record, he said it was a no brainer! Basically ....he didn’t write the song for me, I came in to

If you had the opportunity to collaborate with a seasoned artist, tell us who would it be? CRNB: Hmm...Definitely Beyonce, I’m a big Beyoncé fan. Taking it back… I love Lauren Hill, I, love Tamia, Tank, Musiq Soulchild... Any words of encouragement to those brothers or sisters that want to also get into this industry CRNB: Be yourself, be original, it stands out. People will see the fake, and they do see the real. And also remember.....Nothing good happens quick.

BSharp: Absolutely!!! I had a chance to grow personally more than anything, and I am so grateful for the time looking back. As far as my repertoire, it's kinda funny some of my favorite songs weren't as appealing to me as others before the hiatus and some songs I wrote that I really wasn't fond of grew on me. MUSIC Spotlight

DA Real Immortal Written by CWspeaks

1950. My dad is the drummer in the band, my uncles are part of the band as well, and they still touring and performing to this day, even though my grandfather passed away. Real Immortal, that concept couldn’t be any My brother are into music also, was spittin more exact. and the whole nine, and my dad was trying Chapel Hill native Kiea Cooks involvement in the to get this whole “Jackson 5” type of thing arts is her life blood…and speaking to her you going with me, my sister and my brother. We can tell that she lives it 24/7..365. During our when in Chapel Hill, a club called 506, and I interview, I learned that she was an artist, performed for the first time. Wasn’t even old heavily sought for her Duct Tape art…(one of enough to be in the club, but we went, we which that caught my eye was the Prince piece.) did it, and as soon as I got of that stage She also was working on a web series afterwards I knew that this is what I’m "CHECKMATE “ with talented videographer

Music is a connecting element. And after talking to artist Da

Jake Mrozowski, and of course writing. Needless to say, we were happy to get the opportunity to talk to Da Real Immortal about her music and the history behind it!

Question, who is Da Real Immortal? Oh wow, that’s a loaded question...... The real immortal is, well I got the name when I think I was maybe 15-16 years old. I was going by the name Chi-Nice when I was very young. I was trying to work on a verse, and I looked through the dictionary to find a word that I could actually put in my verse. I came across the word immortal, and it just fit….. someone who is everlasting. And I kinda feel like who I am, and the kind of music I do, my music will be everlasting once I’ve transcended into another universe, you Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts get what I’m saying? My name, my music, will still forever live on! supposed to do. Da Real Immortal is just someone who is very humble and very driven when it comes to my music and how I feel. I try to be as relatable as I can when it comes to the different topics I speak about. But it’s very different, and it’s all everlasting. When reading your bio, you credit your grandfather for setting you on that musical path, let’s talk about that. My grandfather Doug Clark started a band called Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts back in

The history about my grandfather and how he was well known in Chapel Hill like everybody knows Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts. I mean like the colleges and the different stores that have pictures up of them, I mean they are very very well known in Chapel Hill. So I kinda want to continue on that legacy, even if it’s within my own name and right. Music is in my blood, from my family.

41

42

Continuing the legacy wow… You credited a lot of artists, with what you do…from Erykah Badu to Prince to Michael Jackson, so here’s a loaded question for you: if you could collaborate with an artist, who you could create music melody beyond conception (say that three times fast) who would it be? Just one person? Or can I add more than just one person?

ent songs. You gonna feel love and heartbreak, you know it’s just whatever I feel. Its going to be a lot of different sounds, from Jazz to Funk, have R&B, Soul, together and you just get this crazy amazing sound. It’s a lot of genres fused together and you get this dope sound from me!

Recently you stepped out on stage at 106 and Park…hundreds in the audience, millions watching on TV, Go ahead, get daring! Who would you what was your first thoughts? I was very nervous. I thought to flip with? My dream, would be Michael Jackson, I myself….this is national TV and everyone is going to see me, I cannot would definitely like to do something mess this up! I wanted to represent for with him and perform. I would pick his my city, my state, but I can’t mess this brain, as well as Prince. I would have up. Of course you couldn’t tell, because Michael Jackson and Prince, and Nina I’m always nervous before I get on Simone, and Lauren Hill, then round it stage, but nobody can really tell out with Erykah Badu, my top five! because I bring so much excitement, so It would be so crazy to get all five of much energy when I perform. them in a room with me, just a level of music, subject matter, melodies, live I instrumentation. To have Michael, who could play a little, but who has a great ear, then Prince who plays multiple instruments and adding his funk flavor to it. Having Nina Simone and her subject matter, as an activist and being straight to the point, as well as Lauren Hill and Erykah Badu bringing that soul flavor together. I think that would be extremely dope, as well as bringing my high energy and what I can bring to the table as well. Ok, so you trying to shut down streets as well. Alright, we see! LOL..oh yeah Well that leads into the next question, define the sound of Da Real Immortal I don’t like to categorize my sound. I don’t like labels when it comes to my sound. My sound is just what it is….immortal. When you hear an Immortal sound, you gonna get high energy, you gonna get pain with differ-

43

In five years... The Real Immortal will be... Ultimately, I’ll be recognized on many levels. Five years, I’ll be on a major tour, seeing the growth of my fan base, I feel like the web series will be doing well. My Duct Tape paintings that I do, that will always consistently be out there and people will still want to buy them. I feel like at the end of the day I will get recognition for who I really am and the things that I’ve done over the past 12 years. I’m not searching or looking for the substantial amount of fame, because it’s something that I love to do. If it happens, cool beans, I’m all good with that, but at the end of the day, I’m for just being comfortable. If I can just tour, and travel, share my music, my creativity with the world….that will make me extremely happy.
