Summary Only a year ago I was a new student at FAU, just starting college and struggling to even find a real crowd of people I actually enjoyed being around. Before classes started I was pretty enthusiastic. Signing up for clubs that looked even the tiniest bit interesting, but never going to anything more than maybe an open house. Thanks to the FAU Class of 2017 Facebook page, I thought I was already making friends. I was wrong. When classes started everybody was awkward and acted like they had never seen each other even though it was pretty evident they knew who you were by the way they looked at you. Basically, no matter how outgoing they usually were, they became these shy little kids who would sit next to you out of recognition, but wouldn’t

speak a word. So it’s safe to say my first semester of freshman year was really awkward in class. Halfway through spring, I walked into the University Press newsroom and it was like stepping into an episode of TMZ. I was automatically hooked. I stayed with the UP all summer long and because I stayed dedicated, I designed this entire issue — from what each story would be to designing and being in charge of all the photos in it. So I guess you could say I found my place at FAU. The goal of this issue is to help you figure out all the little hacks that will help you find your way around campus sooner. You’re welcome.

5 Things You Should Never Pay For On Campus

One of the best FAU hacks I wish someone told me when I was a freshman: Never. Pay. For. Anything. Several FAU clubs and organizations offer free gear, free food and even free condoms on campus. Basically, you can knock all these freebies off your dorm shopping list.

Photo courtesy of Student Union Productions

1. Free Food Fridays

Courtesy of Student Union Productions, students have the option of picking up some free food. Sometimes it’s ice cream, other times it’s nachos, but every time, it’s free. All you have to do is like them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter when you get there.

Photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons

2. Scantrons

3. Apparel

When: Everyday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Where: First floor of the library, Student Government office (SU 215) Scantrons are twice as easy to get as free food. When test day rolls around, don’t waste any money in the bookstore buying scantrons when you can pick up free ones in the library or SG office No strings attached. When: 24-hour tailgate, Sept. 13 Where: Rat’s Mouth (outside the FAU Football Stadium) and the Breezeway

Photo by Sabrina Martinez

If you plan to show up for the big game anyway, you can pick up some free t-shirts, towels and other FAU swag. You’ll also find free gear on the Breezeway most weekdays when all the clubs and organizations set up tables and pass things out. Basically, never buy FAU gear. By your first semester, you’ll have enough free stuff to last you the full four years.

Photo by Miranda Schumes

4. Condoms

When: Everyday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the Office of Health and Wellness or all day in lobbies of all dorms Where: *Office of Health and Wellness, lobby of all dorms and apartments on campus and SG’s traveling “Woody” cart You can get free condoms in more places on campus than you can get free Scantrons. Stop by the Office of Health and Wellness on the second floor of the Breezeway to grab some, no questions asked. If you’re living on campus, you can run down to the lobby (even during the oddest hours) and they should have a bowl of condoms.

5. HIV Testing

At random times while you’re walking down the Breezeway on your way to class, you’ll find the “Woody” cart loaded with condoms galore. Go ahead and grab a few. No one will judge you. When: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., every other Tuesday while classes are in session Where: *Office of Health and Wellness If you didn’t pay attention to our last tip, you might find yourself in a situation where you need to get tested — just in case.

Photo courtesy of FAU Health and Wellness

6

When: Every Friday 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. Where: The Student Union on the Boca, Davie and Jupiter campuses

Free HIV testing is available to students in the Office of Health and Wellness two to three times a month. You get the results in less than 30 minutes and they have plenty of educational material for free to learn more about sexually transmitted diseases. University Press

*Office of Health and Wellness is located over the Breezeway cafeteria, SS8-Room 222

I wish I knew you get old faster than you think. Time flies, and before you know it it’s almost time to graduate, the window of opportunity closes and the friends you met leave school. It becomes harder to see them, so take advantage of everything college has to offer, including people. #junior #geologymajor

@Kit_Romero

I wish I knew to double check my freshman adviser’s work. I already decided on my major but they told me to take all my general education classes first to get them out of the way. What they didn’t tell me or didn’t know was that I needed to take classes for my major freshman year otherwise I would be in school a year longer, which I was. #graduatestudent #graphicdesignmajor 10 University Press

@Jas_Benitez

@Taylor_Page

I wish I knew that waking up for an 8 a.m. class is not easy just because you just got out of high school and were used to waking up at 6 a.m. #junior #computersciencemajor

I would’ve gotten involved more. I didn’t realize how much I missed out on when it came to college until now that I’m almost graduating. [I feel like] I missed out on a lot, and I didn’t get to make the memories or friends I could’ve if I [had] made an effort. #senior #communicationmajor

@Ariella_Baston

I wish I’d known about the importance of properly scheduling my semesters. Also, I guess the importance of not taking the college experience for granted. You should definitely look into the study abroad programs and look at what certifications and accomplishments your degree requires [to] get that stuff out of the way sooner. #senior #educationmajor

@Yvelis_Estrada

I wish I would have known or had some sort of idea of the dedication and time required to succeed in your classes. For example, the amount of time one should put into studying. I think if I would have taken more of that study time out for myself, I would have done much better in my classes. #sophomore #criminaljusticemajor

@Kiki_Baxter

My first day of school freshman year, I got to campus two hours before my class started. I ended up spending those two hours trying to find a spot and, long story short, ended up dropping out of school for a year before I started up again. Don’t do that. Learn to stalk. Classes usually get out 20 minutes after the hour or 10 minutes before the hour, so get to the garages 5-10 minutes after that. #senior #psychologyandjournalismmajor

@Cindy_Alas

I wish I had taken more general classes rather than delving straight into my core classes because it would’ve been easier to change my major and given me time to really decide what it is I wanted. #senior #interdisciplinarystudiesmajor

@Milor_Perdomo

I wish I would’ve known that talking to a professor when you’re having a difficult time could [go] a long way. Professors can be really understanding even though most students are pretty scared to talk to them. #sophomore #criminaljusticemajor

@Cristina_ Solorzano

Wait untill after the first week of class to buy books. Also check Amazon and Chegg for the books you do need before you go to the bookstore. Also, dont forget community service hours at FAU = a free textbook. #senior #englishmajor

@William_Heath

I wish I would have paid more attention to websites like RateMyProfessor.com and other university rescources because they are usually very accurate. I also wish I would have been more active in clubs. #graduatestudent #artandenglishmajor

Thomas De Maio

August “Mike and I have an open-door policy. We love seeing our fellow classmates come up here, whether it’s just to say ‘hey’ or mention a concern, something’s happening on campus, [the] Breezeway’s leaking or anything like that.”

August “Oh it’s great, man. It’s a dream come true. This has [always] been the goal. I mean, not a lot of people were surprised when they found out I was running. It’s been great. It’s a good opportunity to give back to FAU.”

Thomas De Maio August “Things are going well. I’ve got a great team around me and a lot of great friends [who I’ve] met along the way. For me, one of the more rewarding parts is getting to know all these new student groups and student leaders that [I] never otherwise would’ve gotten the chance to meet. This is my first time getting my feet wet in Student Government. I did it for about a semester in my freshman year and then I had to get a job to help pay for school. University Press August Both Student Body President Cepeda and Vice President De Maio have planned several changes for the coming semester that cover a variety of issues. Some, however, are further along than others. The sale of beer at the FAU Stadium is one such change that is already on the books.

Michael Cepeda

August “There’s a lot of ideas that are already in motion, but I guess I’ve learned through the beer incident to hold off before I announce stuff. I don’t want to be “thirsty” again, although that is happening!”

Thomas De Maio August “They are going to be serving alcohol throughout the stadium, that is true.”

Michael Cepeda August

“As long as you’re 21 you can go down and get beer. But yeah, there are a lot of ideas, and they’re up there. But again, just from learning from the past, I’m going to hold off [on announcing anything].”

University Press August The trend of FAU students wearing merchandise (t-shirts, hats, etc.) from other universities has rubbed the top office-holders in SG the wrong way, and they are planning to take action with a program called Owl Foul.

August That’s a huge pet peeve of mine. Even at orientation, I call out people who wear that...

August As 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of FAU’s Student Government, the student body president and vice president have some special activities planned, many of them aimed at bringing SG more recognition in general campus life.

August We definitely want to have an overall theme this year of giving back to students, being more accessible [and] making Student Government more recognizable on campus — not just for our free Scantrons, but for the opportunities we have to grow out of the classroom. I know Tom and I, this fall semester, are looking to go to as many clubs and organizations [and] getting them to come out to our football games. Kinda go again on campaign mode, but get them to come to our games. We’re going to go to the residence halls, speak to the RAs.

August There are a lot of big things moving forward. I think that one of the coolest things we’ve done so far, and it happened in our first couple weeks in office, was opening up the stadium to Freshman orientation.

University Press August Student government is hoping to strengthen ties with the FAU Police Department through both a technology partnership using Smart Water (a liquid ID tag applied to an item that can be used to track and recover stolen property) and a liaison position.

That’s just a bummer, y’know? I feel like something really cool that Mike actually started was the Owl Foul Program. Basically, what we do is give out little cards to students who have other universities’ shirts on. It says “You’ve been caught in an Owl Foul,” and basically what happens is we bring them up to the SG office. If they give us the shirt, we give them a brand new FAU shirt. We’ll take the shirt that they had and we’ll donate it to a clothing drive, so it’s a win-win for everybody.

Michael Cepeda August We’re looking to get new shirts for this upcoming year because we’re out right now.

August Right now we’re entering a partnership with FAU PD over Smart Water technology. It’s a new way to register your property.

August It’s truly amazing. Fort Lauderdale Police use it, and they’ve seen crime drop 13, 14, 15 percent. It’s supposed to help, moving forward, with crime on campus.

Michael Cepeda August The Boca Raton House of Reps. is looking into bringing back the police liaison position so we have someone in constant communication with FAU PD. We think safety is really important, and through Student Government, we could really benefit from a partnership with them.
