Mariam Aldhahi, is Iraqi. My copy desk chief, Ricky Michalski, is Syrian. I’m Israeli. And we’re all American. While we’re not always calm and composed— don’t forget it’s a newsroom— we generally live peacefully in our little office on the second floor of FAU’s Student Union. Sometimes it seems that our peers know too little of what happens outside the confines of the United States. “Students walk around everyday and they’re so absorbed in their little bubbles,” Aldhahi told me. “Nothing outside the bubble matters to them.” She said she meets students that don’t care because “if it’s not their own people, then they think, ‘Why should I care?’” Michalski said, “I’ve encountered plenty of racist comments in this culture, stemming from ignorance about the Middle East.” He explained, “These attitudes grow out of a void of knowledge that is filled by action movies and American news reports.” When I learned that Al Jazeera, an Arabic news outlet available in English, is offering up its coverage of the recent Egyptian conflict for free to those who want to display it online, I decided that the UP would help. Boca Raton has a very large Jewish population, clocking in during 2005 at 59,700, according to a recent population study by professors Ira Sheskin and Arnold Dashefsky. To me, this should mean that many FAU students would know what’s happening in the Middle East, though most of the ones I’ve met don’t—not even close. Student Government adviser Heather Bishara—who was born in Egypt— said that students talk to her more about campus affairs than about world affairs. “We’re connected to the world community,” she said, “There are international students here and this is a learning environment— it’s important we learn more about our inner circles.” I’ve heard that Al Jazeera has a bias. That Al Jazeera is antiSemitic. That Al Jazeera is one-sided in its coverage of the Israeli/

Palestinian conflict. I don’t agree. But I know others who do, and have read blogs about it. I decided I’d call Al Jazeera and ask. I tried three times, calling six different numbers I found for the newspaper’s English-speaking office in Qatar. I even sent an e-mail through a comment page. As of press time, I have been unable to reach Al Jazeera. Next, I decided I’d call Ira Sheskin, a UM professor and leading authority on Jewish demography, according to the Jewish Federation. I told him about what I plan to do. He said, “Students everywhere should be looking at this.” I asked him about the supposed bias of Al Jazeera. “I think that every news network and every reporter— regardless if they’re trying to be neutral—they ignore some facts sometimes,” he said, concluding, “If we were talking about Israel and Palestine, I’d say [Al Jazeera’s coverage] is closer to neutral than we’ve had.” But we’re not talking about Israel and Palestine. We’re talking about Egypt. We care, and the students at FAU should care too. They need to care because Egypt exemplifies what happens when a population wakes up and fights for what it wants. The demands of the protestors may be justified in instances and exaggerated in others, but nonetheless the people are out on the street fighting for what they believe in. I hear my fellow students complain about the price of books, tuition increases, lack of parking spots, boring classes, biased professors, a failing job market, high gas prices, health care regulations, and so on and so forth. But I also hear a special kind of silence after these complaints. It is the silence of apathy and moral indifference. And that silence can hurt more people than a thousand protests— well, I think it can, anyway. This is not about right and wrong, and the UP is not taking up a side in the Egyptian conflict. This is about freedom of speech and information to those want to give it and those who want to get it. Having started over the past weekend and continuing indefinitely, the UP will dedicate an entire section of its website’s front page to coverage of the Egypt conflict, courtesy of Al Jazeera. FAU offers a class teaching students how to program software for the iPhone Rachel Chapnick Senior Copy Editor Rafael Giusti gets tweets directly to his phone detailing every FAU event coming up. He has an app for that — he invented it. Giusti’s invention is one of three free iPhone apps created by graduate students last spring in a class dedicated to crafting these phone applications. The iPhone programming course, which was offered for the first time last spring, was such a hit that it’s being offered again this spring so students can continue coming up with more geeky goods, said Oge Marques, co-professor of the class. The class had been assigned to create a map of campus and a database of FAU-related Twitter feeds for the iPhone. According to Marques, “Some students chose to combine the assignments. They ended up with three apps that were good enough to put in the app store.” While Guisti is the only current student to have created an FAU app, former master’s students Waazim Reza and Rodrigo Gloria created similar apps as a part of the course last spring. The three students took Marques’ course for essentially the same reason: They wanted to play around with new technology. But when creating these apps, they learned that creating successful iPhone software is more than just playing around. According to Reza, designing apps is very difficult. “There are a lot of issues and bugs,” Reza said. “Then

you have to use it and you have to fix all the issues.” In addition to programming and fixing the apps, Marques instructed the students to make the apps userfriendly. The students were responsible for getting input from their peers and researching other websites and apps to make their creations as useful and simple as possible. While the course taught the students how to program software for Apple’s products, Apple had to approve each app. All three students agreed that going through the process of becoming a developer was a major pain. “Getting [the app] approved by Apple was harder than actually designing it,” Gloria said. To become an Apple developer, the students had to pay $100. On top of that, Apple takes two to three weeks reviewing an app before either accepting or rejecting it. Reza said that in order for an app to be accepted, “Apple needs to decide: ‘OK. This is not a stupid app.’ You need to have a minimum set of features.” Gloria and Reza have turned their apps into a business venture. “I had never done anything with iPhones. Basically I was a programmer before,” said Reza, who now, with the help of a friend, is marketing his app to FAU students. Like Reza, Gloria is also working on developing a new version of his app. He took Marques’ course because his “other classes

were always teaching older life technology, not what’s out in the market.” He wants to use his newfound knowledge to become an application tycoon. He is currently creating games as well as radio and photography apps, which he hopes to sell. Although Gloria and Reza are currently exploring the entrepreneurial possibilities of iPhone app technology, Giusti has no such plans. “If the app gets popular or if I found time for that [expanding the app], I will add more features like current GPS location,” Giusti said. “I am not marketing [my FAU app]. I was just exploring the capabilities of the device as well as learning about new technologies. … That’s why the app is free.” Exploring the capabilities of Apple technology is precisely the purpose of the class. Marques said his goal for the course is to make students familiar with new technology. According to Marques, students taking the class this semester will be taught how to create tools for Apple’s mobile devices, but they will not be required to submit their app to the Apple store. In spite of their programming experience, the three students accredit the successful creaton of their apps to the iPhone class. Marques said the three students from last semester took the initiative and used their own resources. “They went above and beyond,” he said.

Review: This app is the most advanced of the three. It has the most in-depth map of the Boca campus and the largest selection of Twitter feeds. In spite of the amount of information, it is still the easiest to use. This app also provides students with campus phone numbers.

Review: This app is probably the second-most advanced. The map is interactive, but one must click on pins to find out the name of the building. There are several Twitter feeds, but not to the extent of the ones on MyCampusBuddy.

Review: This app basically takes the maps found around the Boca campus and puts them on your iPhone. It also has a link to the main Twitter feed. This is not as in-depth as the other two apps, but it will let an iPhone user navigate around campus.

version. Users of the new version can expect to see more campus buildings and a nifty calendar feature to help students schedule their courses.

owadays, FAU might hold university-approved “streaking” events on campus — for charity, and only if you keep at least a bathing suit on. They did so during Volunteer Week in April 2008. But in the ’70s, FAU students ran around campus completely naked for no cause but their own. Some even biked in the buff. And the police didn’t care. It was 1974 when pantslessness became a pastime in Boca, and “streaking” had only just acquired its modern meaning. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded usage was in a December 1973 Time article that called it “a growing Los Angelesarea fad,” one that quickly spread across the country. When that fad reached FAU a few months later — after becoming popular at FSU, UF and USF — The Atlantic Sun published a special edition called the “Sun Streaker.” The cover featured a large photo of five blurry FAU butts giving new meaning to “the Breezeway.” Inside, along with more photos and some editorials — and even some advertising, strangely enough, for streaking T-shirts — editor-in-chief Barbara Rice narrated an evening where “300 people gathered to watch over a dozen unmasked men and several women dash through the residence areas and breezeways for over three hours.” What led to such an event? The Sun offered various explanations, including “the almost full moon,” pre-exam anxiety, an article from the Palm Beach Post about streaking and hand-made posters put up around campus that day asking men to “show that they have balls.” Probably never before, and almost certainly never since, has the FAU student body mobilized so quickly to adopt and act upon an idea. One male streaker, who on a $100 dare paraded through all five floors of Dorm 21 — originally a girls’ dorm, later known as Timucua Hall, and now the site of freshman dorm Glades Park Towers — said he “did it for the money and because I was drunk.” Other men joined suit — birthday suit, I guess — and then, “not to be outshown [sic], three spirited females bounced their way across campus at 1 a.m.” By this point, campus police had been notified and arrived on the scene, but according to The Sun, they were just there for the free show: “‘I’m just sitting here enjoying it,’ stated one security policeman parked in a campus patrol car.” Students later streaked past the police department — then located in the Breezeway — and shot off fireworks in celebration. The following day’s streaking was covered in the next issue of The Sun, and apparently drew a crowd twice as large with as many as 40 streaking students. Also in that issue of The Sun was a column from Student Body President Chip Fuller, who said “streaking is fine unless it hurts someone or impinges on another person’s rights,” but worried about offending the community and possibly losing scholarships or funding for the university. “My personal feeling is that anyone who has an irrestible [sic] urge to ride a bicycle through the campus twice in broad daylight in the nude must have a screw loose. I believe in the beauty of the human body, but let’s not make a circus out of it,” said Fuller. His comments are now ironic, given that his photo, framed on the wall of Student Government presidents in the Student Union, depicts him without a shirt. While every other guy on the wall is wearing a tie, Fuller wears sunglasses and flaunts his hairy chest.

orty years ago he blew the whistle on shady government dealings by releasing the top-secret governmental study known as the Pentagon Papers to the media. And now, Daniel Ellsberg is coming to FAU. The former United States military analyst is coming to give a lecture and discussion on the recent Wikileaks activity, as well as the importance of freedom of speech in America’s democratic system. “The discussion will evolve around Vietnam and Ellsberg’s role with closing the war and why he decided to risk his future … to release the documents in a way that basically could have ruined his career, landed him in jail, and have these dramatic repercussions,” said Ken Osgood, associate professor of history at FAU. Osgood has been working to bring Ellsberg to campus for some time now, and this year the timing was perfect. “It just so happens that this year is the 40th anniversary of when the pentagon papers began to appear in the press, and it just so happened that in the past few months the whole Wikileaks thing blew up, and I didn’t foresee that happenings so, now his [Ellsberg’s] presence here would be so tremendously relevant.” Famous for his controversial release of the top-secret Pentagon Papers, a collection of documents that showed mistakes and lies regarding the Vietnam war in 1971, Ellsberg is sure to have a great deal to say about Wikileaks, which is similar in nature to the Pentagon Papers but disseminates information leaks online and aims to protect contributor anonymity. In addition to his work in the security leak arena, Ellsberg has been an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq. “Ellsberg is, since he spoke out against the war, I think he could be correctly labeled a dissident in that he is someone who challenges conventional notions of how we go about our relationships with the rest of the world and how treat our own citizens,” said Osgood. “He was one of the earliest and most insightful opponents of the war in Iraq … he predicted all the disasters and mayhem that we’ve encountered there.” Since he teaches a freshmen class about Ellsberg and the Vietnam War, Osgood is excited to see the enthusiastic response that the event has already generated from students and teachers alike. “I’ve been organizing these events for about five years now, and Ellsberg has generated more interest from students and teachers than anyone … most of the tickets are going to students and teachers which is really exciting.” Of the 2,400 to 2,600 seats available, 1,200 were already booked as of last week. “Dr. Osgood is very timely in the speakers that he brings in, it always works out that it’s timely and pertinent to what’s going on in those areas,” said Zella Linn, the office administrator of the department of history. The event is put on by the department of history in the college of arts and letters, which puts on two major lectures a year. The Ellsberg event falls under the Alan B. Larkin Symposium on the American Presidency, according to Linn.

Ryan Cortes STAFF REPORTER FAU Athletic Department secured a deal in fall 2010 to build a 30,000 seat on-campus stadium, many eyeballs looked on with curiosity to track the progress of construction. Months later, as stadium construction continues, the athletic department has secured something else: a web camera that follows the creation of the new stadium. The camera’s pictures can be viewed online at www.fau.edu/ stadium/earthcam.html. The site shows images dating back to the beginning of construction on Nov. 23, 2010. The camera provides screenshots every 15 minutes. In an email sent to students, the athletic department announced, “Viewers can enlarge the view, zoom in and share with others.” “Basically, we just said ‘Hey, it would be great to have a camera and to keep track of the short period of time we’re building the

stadium,’” said senior Associate Athletic Director Terry Mohajir, who oversaw the project. Since the new camera is an additional technological feature, many people were worried about where the money for such a project came from. “I think it was like $5,000 and it came from the stadium project,” said Mohajir. Although the camera has been up for a short period of time, the athletic department has reported positive feedback thus far. “When (the website showing the camera) was first launched, over a month’s period, supposedly it had 2,000 hits on it,” said Mohajir. “So it’s been very well received. “It’s not just a camera. It takes a picture every 15 minutes and at the end when the stadium’s all done, it will have a time lapse photography of everything over the 14 month period we built it.” upressonline.com
