EDITOR’S COLUMN

The job of editor at a crazy popular magazine is riddled with decisions, decisions, and then a few more decisions. Do I lie on the new chair that I’m not allowed on or should I go outside and rest in the sinkhole (which, ahem, I have no idea how that got there...the two others over there near the garden where I thought I smelled a mole either)? In this case, the best decision is to lie in the hole, roll around in the dirt a lot, and then relax on the new chair. Common sense. I haven’t always been a precise decision maker. In my youth I took risks. Despite my mom’s best efforts, I would often just leave my house after dark without a thought, in search of action and cat poop. I’d dig under the fence and mom would block the hole. I would find another weak spot, mom would block that. This went on until mom had used every cinder block and lawn chair in the neighborhood to line the fence. Our yard looked like prison inmates had a chair-throwing fight, perhaps in the middle of a hurricane. Luckily, I discovered going over the fence was a lot less hassle. So, yah. I’ve come a long way from those days. Learning to use common sense has changed my life. I don’t go out by myself anymore. I practice safe summering by getting lots of water and not walking during the day or on hot pavement. Common sense... saves lives, ruins chairs. Smell ya at the beach!

Train Humane

12 | Think about recycling or handing off this to a bud!

I’ve known people who think that hitting dogs is absolutely fine, often saying something like, “This type of breed of dog needs this sort of discipline.” The bond and trust that they have with their dog is damaged, as the animal has learned the duality that the hand that loves and leads is also the hand that hurts. These people never fix the behavior issues by hitting, which results in them hitting their dogs quite often. Train a dog using violence and you will have a dog that is agitated and fearful, which is a dangerous combination. I teach dogs to respond to tone of voice, body language, rewards, and sounds. We have all seen the dog owner yelling and screaming for their dog to “come” after he has run off, only to yell more or use violence if it does return. What incentive does this dog have to return to an angry owner? Instead, call to your dog in a calm tone with a treat or have a special word to get their attention, and give them a rub. I use treats and certain words with my dogs and it works quite well. If they hear “What’s this?” they come running to check out what I have for them. It takes time to train a dog, it does not

happen overnight. There will be setbacks and days when your patience is low, the key is to stay calm and keep trying. If a dog is extremely excited before leaving the house for a walk, that excitement will only increase as the walk continues. But if we leave the house in a calm manner, it helps to set the tone for the walk. For example, The dogs I train must sit and stay while I attach their leads and open the door. Only when they have done what is expected do we leave the house. If they stand up before their signal, I simply shut the door and we start over. It is up to the human to lay the foundation and send clear signals as to what is expected. Remember, exercise, boundaries, leadership, and love will strengthen the bond with your dog. Good luck! Let me know if I can help you. f KATE GODFREY is owner of Wagging Tails and Pattering Paws Dog Walking & Pet Sitting. What inspired you to do pet portraits? About 4 years ago, a coworker started a pet rescue endeavor. It is now LuvMyMuttz rescue. I wanted to help somehow. Wanna

? e d i r a Go for CyntHia inKS

It was the morning

of the first day of the Mega Adoption Event. I remember that all of the shelter staff and volunteers were excited because so many of us would find great “forever homes.” I remember all of my friends were excited because we got to “go for a ride.” I had a lot of mixed emotions. I remember my human used to ask me, “Wanna go for a ride?” and we would hop in the car and go to the beach or park. Those were the best days ever. But I remember the last time he asked me, “Wanna go for a ride?”.We didnt go to the beach or the park. We ended up here, at the shelter. I was so confused. He told the lady behind the glass window that my name was Red. He said I was a great dog but he just didn’t have time for me. If I was a good dog, why did he leave me? I had been living in the shelter for a while and made a lot of friends. The staff and volunteers were so nice to me. They said I was a really good dog! They even taught me some tricks and good manners. They all said I would find a good home at the “Mega Event.” So that morning, as a volunteer opened my kennel and slipped the lead around my neck, I got a little nervous when I heard the words “wanna go for a ride?” Was this going to be a good ride or a sad ride? I had to trust her. I walked quietly to the truck and waited until they

lifted me into my cage. As I looked into her eyes, she told me, “It’s OK Red, you’re a good dog. You’ll be one of the first to be adopted.” It was a long ride to the Mega Event. When they took me out of the truck my whole body shook with a nervous excitement. There were hundreds of dogs barking. It was so loud! As they put me into my crate I just knew that I had to be on my best behavior. I sat, watched, and waited. All of a sudden the place was flooded with people! They walked past all of the crates and looked at all of us. When someone stopped to look at me I would look them in the eye and wag my tail. I didn’t bark at all. I knew I had to be patient. Hours passed and only one person wanted to get me out of my crate to meet me. They walked away and back into my crate I went. It was a sad end to day one. The next morning I woke up and I just knew that day would be the day that I’d meet my forever family. I had A LOT of people take me out of my crate to meet me because the volunteers kept telling everyone that I was the “perfect dog.” Everyone that met me loved me, but no one wanted to take me home. I remember the volunteers shaking their heads as they walked past my crate, “I dont know why Red hasnt been adopted,” was said over and over again that day. As day two ended, I curled up in my kennel and

fell asleep. That night I had a dozen dreams about my forever family, confident tomorrow would be my day. Sunday morning came and the crowds were much smaller. The volunteers started to get worried that my friends and I might have to go back to the shelter. I met some really nice families that day but still, no one wanted to take me home. But then, it happened! I saw them! A beautiful lady and three young girls! They walked over to my crate and started talking to me in really nice, sweet voices. It was music to my ears! A volunteer took me out of my crate and I was on my BEST behavior. This was my chance! I sat quietly as they petted and loved on me. The lady asked a lot of questions. She said she wanted to really think about it. They walked away and I put my head down, feeling so very sad. But then they came back! The lady asked even MORE questions and the volunteer answered them all. They stood there for what seemed like forever. I layed quietly in my crate and looked into their eyes, but what I really wanted to do was jump in the air and bark “Pick me! Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!” Then, it happened. She looked at the volunteer and said, “We want him!” I don’t know who was happier...the volunteers, my new family, or me! (But pretty sure it was

me.) As we left the building the volunteer helped walk me to the car. They opened the back hatch and she said, “Wanna go for a ride?” Without hesitation I jumped right in! I just knew this was going to be a GREAT ride...and hopefully my last (well, unless my forever family wants to take me to the beach or dog park!) Red is adjusting well in his new home. His family just loves him and say he is a great dog! f

adoption advice from a shelter volunteer: Most rescue or shelter dogs need several weeks/ months to adjust to a new home. Please be patient and give them time. Before adopting a dog, please consider whether you have the time to devote to your new family member. Too many dogs end up back in the shelter because owners don’t give them time to adjust. If you have an existing dog or cat in the home, please follow proper “introduction” techniques to ensure positive results. Most shelters and rescue groups have valuable information and resources that will help you during your dog’s initial transition. Don’t hesitate to reach out to staff and volunteers! HEATSTROKE Happens By Claudia Hodge, Veterinary Emergency Nurse

S

ummers in Florida mean hot, sunny days enjoying the beach, the pool, boating, and other outdoor activities. However, these hot summer days can be deadly for our dogs. As a veterinary ER nurse at a local pet emergency hospital on the First Coast, I have already seen many dogs come in due to heatstroke. Dogs do not perspire or sweat like humans do. They cool down by “sweating” through their paw pads and by panting. A normal temperature for a dog averages 101.5 degrees. Heatstroke increases a dog’s internal temperature to well above the normal range. In my line of work, I have seen temperatures rise higher than 106 degrees and that is a deadly range for your pup! Overweight dogs, unconditioned dogs, and short-nosed dogs are more susceptible to overheating, but it

can happen to any dog. Please make sure you take precautions to avoid heatstroke in your dog and to recognize the signs. If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, quickly move your pet to a cool, shaded or airconditioned area and place cold, wet towels or ice-packs on his head, chest, and neck. Seek veterinary medical help immediately!

SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE

• Excessive panting & difficulty breathing • Rapid heartbeat • Dizziness or lack of coordination • Glazed eyes • Excessive thirst • Profuse salivation & vomiting • Seizures or unconsciousness

Heeeey Silly! Use your noggin & keep your dog safe this summer! 1.never leave them in a parked car! Temperatures rise quickly even with the windows down or the A/C on. This can be very dangerous for your pet. Yes, you want them with you, but if you love them, leave them at home when running those midday errands for their own good. 2.limit or eliminate walks & long runs during the heat of the day. In Florida, that usually means between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Early morning or late evening hours are your best bet for enjoying some outside activity with your pet. If you do take your pet out, make sure you bring lots of water to keep them hydrated. 3.watch out for hotttt pavement...asphalt and concrete burns hurt! Dog paws are sensitive, much like the bottom of our feet. If you can’t keep your barefoot on the pavement for more than three seconds, then it is too hot for your pet’s paws! Keep their paws protected by walking them on grassy areas only. 4.hitting the beach? think about wearing a fur coat. That’s what it’s like for your furry friend. If you must bring your dog, make sure you bring shade and extra water. Bring them to cool off in the water often. Remember that dogs are not allowed on Neptune & Jacksonville Beaches between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m daily in the summer. 5.watch out for SNAKES! Summertime rains bring out snakes, some highly venomous ones! Snakes will look for dry, high ground when it rains so watch out for these critters during Florida’s rainy season! Common places dogs get bit by snakes are on the snout (because we all know how “nosey” dogs can be) and the legs and signs include immediate swelling and bleeding. If you suspect your dog has been bit by a snake, seek veterinary medical help immediately!

Low-Cost Community Services Can Help Families

Keep their Pets since I lost my sweet Loulabella. This precious pup has been my best furry friend for more than 17 years. She’s been there through good times and bad; the death of loved ones; break-ups; relationships, career changes, and moves. She stayed sweet and true even after I brought a husband, two stepdaughters, and two other crazy pound hounds into her life.

Nicole & Loulabella

After at least one stroke and loss of balance, along with nearly total loss of sight and hearing, it was time to give her some rest. My good friend, who is also my veterinarian, came by the house to ease her along while she slept in my lap. It was peaceful and stress-free for her, but difficult and heartbreaking for me. I still can’t believe she’s gone, and find myself looking for her in her favorite places constantly.

Each day as I enter the lobby of FCNMHP, there are a number of people waiting with their beloved pets to see a veterinarian. As I watch, I know these pets mean the world to these families and they are often afraid, concerned that the cost of care may force them to abandon or put down their beloved pets.

How would it feel to have your best friend in your arms, knowing this pet could be saved Our pets mean so much to us, regardless of if you could only afford the cost of care? Our goal is to keep pets with their humans. Everything we do is to ensure pets do not ever end up in a shelter, and if they do, we work hard to get them re-homed quickly. 22 | Live • Love • Bark

Meat by-products are not necessarily evil. are not for everyone! There is a certain amount of dedication and a bit of a learning curve. Balancing a They should not contain hooves or hair and if you pet’s diet to meet the specific nutrient requirements are in doubt, choose a more reputable brand. Some for their species, age and health condition is crucial. organs meats are possible and that is not a bad thing. As much as it grieves me to say, even the cheapest 2. Grain free is hype in my opinion. Grains are an commercial product on the market is better than an important part of nutrition for pets, especially dogs.

24 | Let food be thy medicine

Even grains like corn have some nutritional value but there are many other more valuable vegetable choices. Corn is inexpensive and diets with corn in the first three ingredients are generally cheap and not a good choice. Remember that dogs are not as similar to the ancestral wolf as once thought. Research has shown that they have the enzymes to break down grains and other plant materials. Certified GMO-free grains are best for you and your pet so that is worth more than a “grain free” label. 3. There are buzzwords that manufacturers use on labels to attract the health conscious consumer. Labels reading “Natural Ingredients” should mean that they are free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, but there are no formal guidelines limiting what manufacturers can call natural. Organic does not necessarily mean natural and there are no guidelines governing the use of this word on packaging either so buyer beware. The use of these words on food products is a subject that is undergoing some attempts at standardization so, fingers crossed, we can look forward to trusting those words in the future. As for other appealing adjectives like, “premium,” “gourmet,” “ultra premium,” and “holisitic” that sound great, but are only marketing terms. Having said this, don’t hold a company’s marketing attempts against them, just remember to judge the ingredient list instead of the marketing. 4. Some preservatives are necessary or else the food will spoil. Tocopherols are vitamin E derivatives and are natural preservatives, however, they are not as effective as the artificial types so you must make sure that you are not using the food past its expiration date. 5. Raw diets are popular with holistic pet parents and some animals do well on them but not every one! The very young and energetic breeds handle this diet best. Raw diets may be commercial or homemade, but remember, the ingredients are first consideration and the processing is second. Raw does not mean that it is inherently more healthful. When you consider that wild animals do not cook their food, it seems reasonable that dogs and cats, who were

once wild, might do better with raw. However, you must consider that wild animals eat freshly killed raw food. Bacteria thrive in raw food. Immediate freezing of the food after it is killed will reduce bacteria but even properly handled raw foods have higher levels. The level of bacteria and the general health of the pet eating it play a big role in how pets do on the diet. Any pet eating a raw diet will shed this bacteria (E. Coli and Salmonella) in their stool. Caution is needed for small children and older people in the home. Another important consideration is that the meat in these diets is not the only raw component. Raw vegetables are difficult to digest for an omnivore like us — but for a carnivore, plant walls are hard to break down. Pets can and should eat vegetables, they are more nutritious and better tolerated when cooked. Before the fans of raw food fill my inbox in defense of their favorite diet, I am not against feeding raw food, I am only against broad generalizations that this is the best food for every pet. It is not a panacea, and because there are real health risks to consider, it is something my duty as a veterinarian is to advise pet parents interested in feeding raw diets to have a candid conversation with their veterinarian so that you can do it in the safest way. 6. Kibble should be your LAST choice! Dry processed food is heated to the point the food becomes empty calories. Then it’s sprayed with a sugary vitamin-enriched fluid that puts back the nutrients that the processing just removed. Is that acceptable? No! Your doctor would not recommend jerky and cereal and multivitamin as an acceptable diet! In my opinion, dry kibble is the worst thing that has happened to our pets health! Choosing an appropriate diet can be overwhelming. I acknowledge the introduction of commercial pet foods during the second world war and how it paved the way for American families to know the joy of keeping a pet at all! But times have changed. If your lifestyle will only afford feeding dry kibble then follow as many of these guidelines as you can and let’s get Ol’ Roy and Alpo off the shelves! Never believe that you cannot improve your pet’s diet, because of your schedule or income. More people make bad >>

choices because they aren’t informed rather financial limitations. Cutting just 15 percent of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, empty calories from a diet or making a modest improvement in the quality of food you can make a dramatic difference. Many people tell me that their pet seems perfectly healthy on a lifetime diet of the cheapest dry kibble diet available. There is no doubt that genetics play a critical role in our lifespan and our vitality. I know a man who drank sugary drinks and candy without restraint, smoked a pack a day, and lived to be 96 without a major health complaint. I say, “Great! I can only imagine how much better those perfectly healthy individuals might have felt or how much longer they could have lived with better nutrition.” Perfect health is a compilation of genetics, environmental factors, nutrition, and some other disease prevention modalities we might cover another day. I dream of a day when my patients suffer only the occasional accidental injury and my role is primarily in supporting wellness rather than treating disease. I want to see more healthy than unhealthy pets and sadly this is not the case now. I believe the most important area of health reform for us and our pets is in what we eat. I challenge you as a pet parent to re-imagine your definition of health. I see a world of soft, shiny hair coats with subtle variations of color, flawless, non-itchy skin, paw pads like Italian leather driving gloves, soft shiny noses, healthy pink gums, bright shiny eyes, strong muscles, clear voices, balanced dispositions, endless energy for jumping, running, and a desire to play or work even in the latest phase of life. I imagine pets without vomiting, diarrhea, gassiness, skin and ear infections, auto-immune diseases, respiratory infections, heart diseases, and longer lifespans. So, read your pet food labels, talk to your veterinarian, and take my challenge. Your pet will thank you. f Dr. Cameron Jones utilizes a mix of Eastern and Western philosophy in her Jacksonville Beach practice. Food therapy is one of her specialties. SUPER DOG!

BREE

I love my BREE girl. She is beautiful to me but, many may find her a little “ugly” as she has an undershot jaw with some teeth protrusion. She was from a mega adoption event last year in September. I was walking down the rows of dogs and all I heard was “woo woo wooooo.” It was her trying to get our attention. She chose us, as I didn’t see her make that noise for anyone else! We adopted her that day and she has been family since. ~Laura Johnson, via facebook

DALTON’s Story DALTON came to St. Francis with a life-threatening urinary blockage that required emergency surgery. Unfortunately, Dalton’s family couldn’t afford the entire cost of the surgery. Thanks to donors like you, Dalton was able to get the medical attention he needed to save his life. He is now at home recovering and his family is so grateful to have their sweet baby home. “Thank you to the wonderful animal lovers who have given Dalton a second chance. My animals are like my children; their needs come first — the joy they bring is priceless. My funds are limited but my heart is huge and filled with love and gratitude for everyone who donated towards Dalton’s medical expenses. Dalton and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” - Phyl, Dalton’s mom As in Dalton’s case, we often have families come to us with a sick or injured pet and they can’t afford the entire cost of the medical care their pet needs. In these cases, donations to our Helping Paws Fund from caring people like you help to cover the cost of any care the family can’t afford.

He goes everywhere with me and can sense when I’m going to have a panic attack from my PTSD. He prevents those by asking me to pay attention to him instead of what is going on in my head. He is simply amazing.

LOOKING FOR LOVE - take a chance on me!

Meet

! y e n Ho Hello! I’m a 1-year-old lovebug! If you’ve ever wanted a loyal dog who will curl up with her head on your lap after a day of play, I’m your girl! I was saved from a horrible kill shelter a few months ago, and a m spending time in a foster home learning what it’s like to be loved and what it’s like when a hand approaches me for petting and not something bad. I’ve has discovered the joy of snuggling on the couch and a m forever hooked. I’m so ready for a person of my very own. I adore my foster brother, (an 80-pound lab mix). I regularly go to doggy daycare where I spend the day playing with my friends! My favorite outdoor activities are chasing squirrels and basking in the sun. I LOVE going for rides in the car and going on long walks. My rough start means that I a m still a little scared of a few things, including small children. I’ve had interaction with a quiet dog-savvy teenager and she quickly won me over with treats! mmmmm! I also need some help with meeting other dogs on a leash — but if you’re willing to work with me on those small things I will reward you many, many times over with my big brown eyes full of unconditional love. Please ask for more information about me!

Nice to , meet you I’m

Ariel!

So, I found herself at Animal Care and Protective Services at 9 years old. It was so confusing...I couldn’t figure out why I was there. Fortunately for me, Laura Bouchy saw me and wanted to help! Laura and her husband own the Jacksonville Sharks, Jacksonville’s arena football team. Laura reached out to Pit Sisters and a partnership was formed to help advocate for me. I even went to a Sharks home game and met members of the Shark Attack Dance Team as well as many Sharks fans! I had so much fun...but I didn’t find my family that day. I am super well behaved. I know how to sit and am house and crate trained. The Sharks are sponsoring my adoption fee and vet care... but I am in need of a really great home! Please let me show you how much you will love me. I will love you unconditionally! Contact Pit Sisters for more info on this super sweet girl. Email: patti@pitsisters.org • pitsisters.org
