The seventh edition of the Silesian Science Festival will go down in history as the inauguration and beginning of the celebrations of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. Because in the beginning there was the Festival and without it this wonderful title for the City would not have been possible to achieve. Although the cooperation of the academic community in Katowice had lasted for years, the Festival brought us together for good. Us, i.e. primarily seven public universities and their seven rectors who make up the Academic Consortium Katowice – City Of Science: Academy of Music – Prof. Władysław Szymański; Academy of Fine Arts and Design – Prof. Grzegorz Hańderek; Academy of Physical Education – Prof. Grzegorz Juras; Silesian University of Technology – Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk; Medical University of Silesia – Prof. Tomasz Szczepański; University of Economics – Prof. Celina Olszak; University of Silesia – Prof. Ryszard Koziołek. The three most important local government institutions and their leaders joined the academic seven: City of Katowice – Marcin Krupa, PhD, Mayor; voivodeship local government – Jakub Chełstowski, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship; Metropolis GZM – Kazimierz Karolczak, Chair of the board of Metropolis GZM Pythagoras considered the number 10 to be perfect. We also believe it. But the more allies an idea has, the easier it is to implement it. That’s why two excellent universities from Częstochowa have been with us almost from the beginning: Jan Dlugosz University if Czestochowa with its Rector, Prof. Anna Wypych-Gawrońska, and Czestochowa University of Technology led by Prof. Norbert Sczygiol. SCIENCE STATIONS Science Stations are places where participants can talk to the festival guests in a more intimate atmosphere. The “human library” allows you to get even closer to science. The idea of Science Stations is to break down barriers between a layman and a specialist in a given field – to show that science ‘doesn’t bite’. After all, it allows us not only to understand the changes taking place in the world, but also to create positive changes.

Science plays a significant role in human life. It concerns many areas that improve the comfort of our lives. It is all about discoveries, inventions, and skills we acquire as people. We implement smart city solutions in Katowice, with the multiply awarded Katowice Intelligent Monitoring and Analysis System, or one of the largest networks of air quality monitoring sensors within the international AWAIR project. We are implementing the Intelligent Transport Management System, which will improve the overall transport in the city. All of it is possible owing to the practical use and application of science in the life of a town.
Each initiative is an excellent reason to realise how significant science is in our lives, our growth, and the development of institutions and societies we create. One can not think about the current social and political situations without profound scientific analysis, an example of which may be the climate crisis. It is the science that provides us with arguments for an extensive debate and tools to tackle it. It inspires us and makes us think; the question is whether we want to do something with it, use this knowledge and react to the challenges. We have this one-of-a-kind chance to break the spell of Silesia, share experiences, and build a space for change, which is inevitable and constitutes a key element of development.
It is an opportunity to attract and keep in Silesia the most talented students. We want to create a knowledge-based economy and we have a great aptitude to do so. Within the Metropolis GZM area, we have 27 public and non-public universities educating 92,000 students. Speaking more vividly, today’s Metropolis has more students than miners. The healthcare, logistics, IT and automotive industries are rapidly developing here. We create new and well-paid workplaces; it is – therefore – important our universities provide well-qualified staff.

Science constantly provides answers to the current social problems. One of our priorities should be counteracting the emigration of medical forces by introducing the right solutions. Our great challenge is to improve the access to healthcare, which has been disturbed by the pandemic. The most challenging task, however, concerning the European City of Science is reinforcing the research infrastructure and scientific potential, which should serve for development. It is our common goal to make ECS actions the scientific and economic glue connecting residents and students. It is about specific solutions serving our regional community. The increase in scientific activity will translate into regional development in each aspect.

Building future based on science and education should be every country’s priority. Without science, there cannot be a good economy, high-quality services, and – consequently – a decent life. Science is a ticket to innovation, technological progress, and a space for breaking mental and cultural barriers, and taking risks. Katowice and the entire region of Silesia and Zagłębie constitute an undisputable example showing how well-organised work based on technology may a source of wealth and success. Today, we are showing you that science and higher education become the new industry. It gives a unique chance to be a leader of change and transformation not only in Poland but in the entire Europe. Do not be afraid to invest in science and human capital. Such an investment is likely to pay off. Believe me, it will serve us—common people—and primarily the future generations.

Science centres create the image of the region. They are places for creating new research and cultural initiatives. The cooperation between universities of the region gained momentum last year; the universities began to work on the common ground for the region. The results of works carried out at universities translate into the prestige of a centre and improvement of daily life of residents. We expect the title of the City of Science will result in a greater interest in candidates to study at Upper Silesia universities and later take up the work in the region and act for the sake of its development.
Reality can be created in various ways; however, the social capital built on a high-quality education is the true catalyst for all processes taking place in the public sphere we can think of. It is a value that is hard to overestimate. We have to build trust toward science – it is crucial in these uncertain times. I deeply believe that we witness the process of transformation that will substantially change the image of this region as it was during the Industrial Revolution. I believe that the transformation of Silesia may be – and should be – a key moment that will allow realising where the real ‘natural resources’ of the region lie, especially that the presence of science in this place sprouts from its complex nature and history. However, it will not be possible without the residents’ involvement. By building the intellectual capital of the region, we have an impact on the image of Silesia in the country and Europe.

In my view, the most important thing is to realise how big of a chance we have received. We as Silesians and we as Poland. Katowice is the first academic centre in our part of Europe to be honoured with this prestigious title. It is a great challenge. I am convinced that it will also become an element of building the prestige of Polish higher education and science. I hope it will change the positioning of our activity in Europe, and therefore tightening collaboration with other significant academic centres and finding new partners. We count on many international students having an interest in Katowice; their presence will undoubtedly enrich our region and its economic sector.

Scientific research is essential for the functioning of society. It was especially proven by the last four years, full of challenges for all of us. Fighting the pandemic and energy crisis were real tests in terms of science and economy. How did we do? To paraphrase words by Thomas Edison, making amazing discoveries is easy, but the essence of science is to find its practical application. Seeking solutions to the contemporary problems present in all aspects of life is a goal of scientists. I am proud that Częstochowa University of Technology employees contribute with their research to improve the quality of the environment by suggesting solutions that are not based on fossil fuels and do not degrade our planet. Moreover, they contribute to a better quality of our lives by, e.g. developing new implant materials. They improve the operation of many enterprises and businesses by giving them new technologies and perfecting their management methods. Nevertheless, we must remember that no scientific issue is above any other, because we can never know what challenges the future brings.

A different question may be asked from the perspective of universities: is it possible to create a good place to work and live without science? I believe that a truly excellent place that will be changing for better and constantly improving cannot be created without scientific advance. The reality around us throws down increasingly more demanding challenges related to the pandemic, energy crisis, and wars unfolding in close and seemingly more remote areas. Science is essential to tackle them. It concerns each and every place to work and live, both big-city and regional. Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa implements tasks needed to increase the quality of life, and engages in research on medical and health sciences, food technology, energetics, and artificial intelligence. Eventually, residents of cities and regions benefit from universities and the science developed within them.
