Seppo Hassi and Rudi Wietsma published an article Products of generalized Nevanlinna Functions with symmetric rational functions in Journal of Functional Analysis. – Waiting for the referee reports took more than 2,5 years, but the final printing went actually rather fast, professor Hassi tells. – This was the slowest review process of my career. I think the editors of the journal had trouble in finding the right reviewers. Usually the reviewers have 4 to 6 months to read the article. Journal of Functional Analysis is the top journal in the field of functional analysis. It issues twice a month. Quite a lot of articles are waiting to be reviewed. Reject percent is high. – It is important to have the positive statements from the reviewers. The article has to be nearly perfect, in practice you can’t rewrite any parts of the article because so many excellent articles are waiting to be printed. Comments on the article were positive and the research was published in March. – We knew we had good results, and finally the research is published.

7 Researcher in the Spotlight University lecturer Kim Sandvad West first came to Finland in 2007 to learn Finnish in a week, but he liked the country so much that he forgot to go back home to Denmark. After having lived in Helsinki for some years, he moved to Vaasa in 2012. At the university West teaches Danish, Faroese, rhetoric and Scandinavian studies. He has a master’s degree in Scandinavian languages and literature from the University of Aarhus. West started writing his doctoral thesis last year. He studies television cooking programs, how the chefs verbalize and describe taste and how they describe the texture or the smell of the food. – Although I’m still at an early stage of my research, it looks like the chefs use quite a lot of metaphors. They often describe taste by creating whole scenarios and visions. West analyses several seasons of four different shows, two female and two male chefs. – Female chefs often use extravagant words and create bigger scenarios. Male chefs are more precise and short in their description, West tells. West combines rhetoric, metaphors and theory of relevance in his study. – The main thing is the shared relevance. The chef has to speak the same language as the audience to be understood and to create a common ground of references. – I have days and days of data, but I don’t mind because I like watching cooking shows, tells West who also likes to cook. He has been able to combine his work and hobby. At the moment West’s favorite cuisine is North African and Vietnamese. When it comes to Finnish food, more seasoning would do a great deal, West encourages.

17.2. Jari Koskinen, Industrial Management A dynamic business model for high-tech industry in a global environment - The origin of operational patterns by means of social selection. Acta Wasaensia 295. Jari Koskinen’s doctoral thesis presents a new view of firms’ dynamic capabilities and flexibility operations, introducing a new business model called the dynamic business model (DBM). Field of the study is industrial management. – The new model will help firms to create more effective management systems and operational processes in order to better serve their customers, Koskinen explains. In recent years numerous events have had a huge impact on the way people conduct business. Some of these events have even resulted in a global economic crisis. This state of affairs has led to an uncertain and challenging business environment and has affected the management of businesses throughout the world. – Effective management and business models in the global market place of the twenty-first century have become more and more crucial, explains Koskinen, who has the top management position in Vacon. The research supports the view that those companies that can quickly react to their changing surroundings will become successful than their competitors. Research shows that a number of key factors, including entrepreneurial strategy, R&D to market performance, dynamic operational excellence, and intellectual capital with decentralized decision-making processes are critical for high technology companies.
