USING THIS GUIDE This guide is designed to show everything that’s taking place in Welcome Week – a week or so of events for you to get to know the campus, make friends and kick off your next few years here in style! To make it easier for you to plan your time, your Welcome events are grouped into four categories: Get Involved - Events to give you an introduction to campus life; these cover all our fairs and give you a taste of the world renowned academic offer here at The University of Manchester. Go Explore - New to Manchester? No problem! Our ‘Go Explore’ section will help you find your feet, from taking a tour of the University, to getting out into the city and discovering some of the highlights of Manchester’s cultural scene. Be Social - Part of the excitement of starting university is all the new friends you will make, almost everyone finds it a bit daunting at first. To help you out, we have a set of events designed for you to meet new people, start a conversation and find some friends for life. Have Fun - Last but certainly not least, we want your Welcome Week to be all about having fun! From parties to movie nights to quizzes, this year we have loads going on to help you relax, stay entertained and create some unforgettable memories with your new friends. Most of our Welcome events operate on a drop-in basis, but where numbers are limited you may need to book a ticket in advance. PLANNING AHEAD As well as using the guide to plan your time, our dedicated Welcome Website has all the extra information you might need between now and your arrival in September, and is your first port of call if you have any questions that need answering. The website has everything you need, including where to register and how to access your timetables, as well as tips and advice for settling into student life. You’ll also find a full list of all 26 Schools’ induction programmes, some of which are compulsory, as these events will not be included in this guide. You can sign up for a whole range of sport and fitness on offer, whether you’re looking to join one of our sports teams, or get a taste of our whole range of activities to keep you fit and have fun! Ranging from athletics to rowing, fencing to karate, BMX racing to dodgeball, and many other grass, water and indoor sports, you will definitely find something to keep you active!
Start of Year Fair There is plenty of help and support on offer during your studies – it’s just knowing where to find it. Come along and see how you can make the most of Manchester, with plenty of advice on matters around your learning, health, finances and welfare. You might also pick up a freebie or two!

Sustainability Challenge As part of the unique welcome to Manchester, all 8,000 first year students will complete the Sustainability Challenge on Tuesday 20 September as part of the University’s Ethical Grand Challenges programme. Working in small groups with students from all courses, you’ll have a go at working through a case study based on real life research at the University. Not only will the challenge allow you to get involved with some real-world issues around sustainability, but you will build valuable skills, meet lots of students from across the University and find out more about what Manchester has to offer. Look out for more information from your academic School. Your personalised timetable, available from the Monday of Welcome Week, will tell you where you’ll be completing the Sustainability Challenge and at what time.
Talking ‘bout my Education Are you passionate about education? Interested in representing the student voice? We want to make sure that all students get the course that they signed up for and have a place to speak up on the issues that matter. Come along to find out how!
Welcome Fair With over 460 clubs and societies to join, ranging from Archaeology and Archery to Politics and Panto, there’s something for everyone at the Students’ Union! Head down to the biggest fair on campus for society sign ups, freebies and plenty of pizza.

A City Walking Tour and John Rylands Evening Get to know the real Manchester with a guided tour of the city’s cultural highlights ending at the beautiful John Rylands Library, with authors from the Creative Writing School bringing the library to life with their work for the night. Meet us at University Place at 5.15pm where our student ambassadors will take you to the start point at Bridgewater Hall. Campus Tours The University can seem like a huge place, so get familiar with your campus on these tours designed for students, by students. Our student ambassadors will tailor each tour to your School and interests, as well as sharing their top tips and favourite places on campus and in the city.

City Bus Tours Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride as our professional tour guides reveal all the fascinating facts and interesting tales about your new city. The tour takes you all around Manchester, and includes a stop that will give you a chance to hop off and wander around Salford Quays, home to Media City, The Lowry Theatre and the Imperial War Museum. John Rylands Library Tours The John Rylands Library on Deansgate is host to one of the world’s finest collections of rare books and manuscripts, and as a Manchester student you have the privilege of being able to study in these magnificent surroundings whenever you like. Come along on one of our tours to take a look around and find out more about the library’s fascinating history.
Manchester Museum Tours Take a tour around Manchester Museum with our team of experts to guide you. Meet our resident Tyrannosaurus Rex, ‘Stan’, marvel at the diverse galleries including our ancient Egyptian artefacts and take a trip to the ‘Vivarium’ - home to some of the rarest frogs, reptiles and lizards on the planet. *Tours are limited to 15 spaces each and are available on a first come first served basis

Northern Quarter Café Crawl Join us for a wander around Manchester’s cultural hub as we sample some of the Northern Quarter’s many quaint and quirky cafés. We’ve added an element of competition, offering a prize for the group who can explore the most in the time available! This is a great chance to familiarise yourself with the popular Northern Quarter area of Manchester and grab a slice of cake or two while you’re at it. Supermarket Trips Need some last minute bits for your new room? Want to get stocked up on food to get you through your first few weeks? Fear not; we’re running free buses to and from a nearby supermarket to give you the chance to pick up everything you need.

Whitworth Art Gallery Tours A recent £15 million development has transformed The Whitworth, doubling it in size and providing a fitting home for the extensive collection of art and design housed here. Join us for a tour of the eclectic collection and find out how you can make the gallery part of your university experience. * Tours are limited to 20 spaces each and are available on a first come first served basis.

To help, we have a programme of events specifically designed to help you meet new people, socialise and make life-long friends while studying here in Manchester. Activities at The Union ‘Activities at the Union’ is your chance to meet with the Students’ Union and make friends with your fellow students over crafts, board games and a whole host of fun activities. Whether you’ve been at the Conversation Corner or would like to join us later, come along to play games or make something decorative for your new room.
Conversation Corner Come along to a Conversation Corner to meet new people, talk about shared experiences and issues, and find out more about the Students’ Union’s Liberation Campaigns and Projects. Sessions include: Black and Minority Ethnic Students, LGBTQ, Mature Students and Student Parents, Women’s Group, Postgraduate Students, Students with Disabilities and International Students.

Families Welcome Party The Families Welcome Party is the perfect place to meet other families and have some fun - plus there’s a bouncy castle for the kids! You can also find out more about what facilities and support the International Society can offer to students who arrive with families.
Home Away from Home Living at home this year and need to escape the craziness of Welcome Week for bit? Drop in to our living room on campus, a common room for living at home students who commute, to chill in and have some free biscuits! Sit back, relax and enjoy your Home Away from Home.
International Society BBQ Everyone loves a good BBQ, so come and join us at the International Society where there will be food, soft drinks and live music. Halal and vegetarian options will be available. Tickets cost £6 and are available from the International Society reception

Mingle After Hours After the Speed Meet and Mingle event, why not carry on your conversations in the Union Bar? With free entry and DJs until 3am, Mingle After Hours is the perfect place to unwind and socialise with your friends, old and new.
Speed Meet and Mingle Hosted by The Whitworth Art Gallery, this is your chance to meet and chat to other new students who have just arrived in Manchester, with music and activities put on by the gallery.

A Night at the Museum
POSTGRADUATE EVENT
An opportunity to meet fellow postgraduate students for an evening of music, culture (and dinosaurs!) all in the impressive surroundings of the Manchester Museum. Meet your fellow students, say hello to ‘Stan’ the T-Rex and get a taste of Manchester culture.
Film at 5 We will be showing a different movie every evening at 5pm at our pop-up cinema in the Students’ Union and Renold Building (8). So come and relax after a busy day on campus and check out a free film with popcorn and pizza on us.

Official Welcome Parties Get to know Manchester’s vibrant night scene with our four official University of Manchester Welcome Parties. One wristband gives you access to four nights across the city – each delivering an insight into Manchester’s unique character. Expect great venues, special guests and DJs in an energetic atmosphere. Pangaea Run by students, for students, Pangaea is the hottest ticket in town. Over 6,000 revellers will descend upon the Students’ Union for an unforgettable night of music, street food and amazing visuals. Previous acts have included Hot Chip, Clean Bandit, Booka Shade, Sister Sledge, London Grammar, and DJ Yoda. Parkrun Join us and our Run Wild society for a free 5k run around Platt Fields Park. Held in pleasant parkland on Saturday mornings, Parkrun is an open to all event where runners can meet like-minded people and keep fit, whether you’re a beginner or have been running for years.
Postgraduate Pizza Evening Come along to this informal event to meet other postgraduate students and find out more about what the Students’ Union can offer you. Pizza, friendly faces and supportive chat guaranteed.
