Course overview

Group work

Southampton is internationally known for the quality of its research and teaching across the biological sciences. You will join our scientific community of more than 700 students and 40 academic staff who are discovering answers to many of the big challenges facing humanity from drug development, green energy, global warming and food security to protecting endangered species. All our undergraduate programmes combine teaching from experienced scientists with the challenge of your own research projects. Achieving a degree in the biological sciences will give you the analytical and problem-solving skills you will need for a wide variety of rewarding and interesting careers.

Team work helps scientists make important discoveries. Much of your learning will involve group assignments and projects as you tackle specific challenges and reallife problems, guided by your tutors. Developing skills in problem solving and analysis in teams will prove an excellent grounding for your future career.

Course structure Our undergraduate degrees are designed to cover all the elements in your individual study programme with opportunities to follow your own interests by choosing optional modules in your second and third years. Whether you are interested in the development of new drugs to fight disease, charting ecosystems around the world or exploring new biofuels, our flexible degrees taught in Southampton’s impressive Life Sciences building will inspire you to achieve your potential. You may also opt to spend a Year in Industry or study abroad during your time with us. Alongside your formal studies, extra laboratory or fieldwork placements can be arranged to put your new knowledge and skills into practice.

How will you learn? The Centre for Biological Sciences is an ideal environment for student scientists. Our new ÂŁ50 million laboratories and teaching space are the focus for interdisciplinary study in the Institute for Life Sciences. You will be taught in lectures and seminars by our internationally known scientists and develop your skills through practical laboratory sessions and workshops. Combining core and optional modules will enable you to tailor your degree towards your own interests. Towards the end of your studies, you will complete at least one individual research project, making discoveries alongside experienced researchers.

Field trips First year students of Biology and Zoology will learn about the natural world at first hand on the Easter study trip to AndalucĂ­a; many graduates say it was one of the highlights of their time at Southampton. Other opportunities exist for students to put theory into practice through projects and placements.

Putting learning into practice Studying the biological sciences is not just about learning in the lecture theatre. Laboratory work and field studies will challenge you to apply your learning to practical problems. MBiochem Master of Biochemistry Overview

This integrated master’s degree will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, essential physiology, and essential biology, while developing the skillset you will require for a career in biochemistry. BSc Biology Overview

Key information

Skilled biologists are in demand throughout the world helping policymakers to predict the effects of climate change, understand how animals and plants co-exist and evaluate the effects of biofuels on food supply. You will study life from molecules and cells to whole organisms and species and even communities and ecosystems alongside our leading scientists.

Course content Biology degrees start with a broad study of the biosciences from microbes to plants and animals. MSci Biology and Marine Biology Overview

Key information

This integrated master’s degree provides a comprehensive understanding of terrestrial and marine biology within a multidisciplinary science environment. Learning is equally divided between the Centre for Biological Sciences (CfB) and Ocean and Earth Science (OES) and you will build your knowledge base progressively. Research projects in both CfB and OES in years 3 and 4 allow a focus on independent research in the final two years so setting the scene for a biological career that spans both environments.

Course content Year one modules introduce you to terrestrial and marine biota. Course work is supported by practicals, boat work and a Mediterranean field course. Years two and three expand your biological knowledge and practical/ field skills in a progressive fashion, encompassing an intertidal ecology field course and the start of independent research skills. In year four, there is a marine field course (unique to this degree) and you conduct an independent research project alongside specialist modules in both terrestrial and marine biology.

Biomedical scientists study the mechanisms of life and the underlying causes of disease. The Masters of Ecology programme builds on our successful BSc Biology and BSc Zoology degrees. BSc Pharmacology Overview

Key information

Pharmacology is the science of how drugs work. This programme examines molecular aspects of how drugs can be used to treat disease in humans and animals as scientists seek an improved quality of life for all. Recent advances in this area have resulted in better treatments for diseases such as AIDS, depression, heart failure and malaria.

Course content You will learn the major concepts and principles of pharmacology in years one and two through core topics before completing a research project of your own in your third year. Foundation Year programmes Overview One of our Foundation Year programmes may apply if you are studying for A-levels in subjects different to those required for direct entry to one of our degrees. Successful completion of the Foundation Year will earn you a place on one of our highly regarded degree programmes. These programmes may also interest you if you are a mature applicant, with skills and experience from employment, or if you have non-standard qualifications.

We offer: BSc Biochemistry/ Biomedical/ Pharmacology with foundation year (UCAS code: CB71) BSc Biology/ Zoology with Foundation year (UCAS code: C108) You will be taught Biology (five hours per week), Chemistry (six hours per week) and Maths (four hours per week) To enter the first year of an Honours degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical, Pharmacology, Biology and Zoology, you will need to achieve at least 60% in biology, chemistry and maths at the end of your Foundation Year You must have achieved at least GCSE level grade C in English, Mathematics and Science (or equivalent qualifications)

Students registered on the foundation years are full-time members of the University of Southampton student community, with access to accommodation within halls of residence and full use of facilities. Teaching and assessment: Foundation Year students are taught in small groups so that we can offer you a high level of learning support. Your full-time programme will be delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, laboratories and private study. Assessment is mainly by unseen written examination (70 per cent) and by a variety of coursework assignments (30 per cent).

Applying and funding We realise that going to university is a significant investment, so we’ll ensure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision. General entry requirements

Tuition fees and funding

To apply for undergraduate study you must satisfy our general entry requirements and any specific requirements of your chosen programme. Typical entry requirements for applicants with GCE A-levels can be found online.

The University will set fees for 2015/16 when the government establishes limits for tuition fees. For 2014/15, the University set the tuition fee at £9,000, but we offer a large number of generous fee waivers and bursaries for eligible students.

How to apply

For students from lower income families, these financial packages will be based on household income supplied to us by the Student Loans Company.

Apply online at www.ucas.com the website for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Our UCAS code name is SOTON and our number is S27. All students should apply between 1 September 2014 and 15 January 2015. If you are an international student from outside the UK or EU, we may consider your application up until 30 June 2015. However, we cannot guarantee there will be vacancies on our courses after the January deadline.

Meet and Greet The Meet and Greet service from London Heathrow Airport is provided free of charge and is designed to get you to the University in time for the Welcome week. If you are starting your studies in 2015/16, you can register for both the service and the Welcome week from July 2015 on our website.

Visas Before you join us, find out about the UK’s immigration procedures. Do this well in advance of your arrival in the UK. Our website provides information on student visas, police registration, working in the UK and has links to other useful websites.

English language requirements If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate that you have reached a satisfactory standard in an approved English language test. For the majority of our courses we require an IELTS level of 6.5 or equivalent, achieved in the past two years. If you need to improve your English language skills, you can apply to our pre-sessional English language courses. In September each year, we arrange an International and EU Welcome Programme, which helps you settle into life here. The programme includes general events to introduce you to our facilities, subject-specific events to begin your academic induction and a range of social and cultural activities. Travel details Southampton has excellent transport links with the rest of the UK and internationally, by road, rail, sea and air. By road

By bus

Our Southampton and Winchester campuses are well connected to the national road network. The M3 links Southampton and Winchester directly to London. For Southampton campuses, exit the M3 at junction 14 and follow signs for Southampton (A33). Follow the A33 into Bassett Avenue and follow signs to University campuses.

We run the award winning uni-link bus service that connects our Southampton campuses with all the major transport links in the city. You can buy tickets at the uni-link office or you can buy tickets on the bus.

For Winchester School of Art, exit the M3 at junction nine or 10 and follow signs to the campus. The M27 is one of the major road links along the south coast of England and passes Southampton to the north. For the University, leave the M27 at junction five (Southampton Airport) and follow signs to University campuses.

Downloadable for iPhone, the SotonBus App allows you to view bus and route information from all major bus operators in the Southampton area. With GPS positioning, you can find your nearest bus stop, plan routes and save frequently used bus stops for easy access.

By air Southampton Airport is about 20 minutes from the Southampton campuses by bus or taxi. There is a full UK domestic service, as well as flights to mainland Europe and the Channel Islands.

Southampton and Winchester are well served by mainline railway stations – Southampton Central, Southampton Airport Parkway and Winchester. Fast trains from London and Bournemouth/Weymouth stop at all three stations, and the typical journey times to London Waterloo from Southampton Central and Winchester are an hour and 20 minutes and an hour, respectively. Winchester School of Art is a 15 minute walk from Winchester train station. The uni-link frequent bus service (U1), connects into the Southampton Airport Parkway and Southampton Central train services, via the University.
