SUPPORTINGYOU DURING THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS

The Cost of Living crisis is affecting everyone, with increases in utility bills, food prices and transport costs.

We have various funding and support in place to help you if your financial situation is affecting your ability to study. They do not need to be paid back and can help with the cost of things such as study equipment, technology, health and wellbeing, rent, utilities, food, and unexpected outgoings.

WHERE TO STUDY AND RELAX ON CAMPUS

Check out the University of Southampton campus map to find study and social spaces on campus as well as places to eat and drink.

The Student Hub not only offers you in person support in Building 37 on Highfield Campus, but the hangout space is a comfy area with cushions and relaxing surroundings – an alternative space open to you throughout the year.

The new study space at the Sir James Matthews Building in the centre of Southampton has ample space and is a great new spot to study on your own or with friends.

FAITH AND REFLECTION CENTRE AND PRAYER ROOMS

The Faith and Reflection Centre on Highfield Campus is open for both staff and students to enjoy in term time (Monday-Friday, 10:00-17:00).

There is a Muslim prayer room on Highfield Campus. There is also a quiet room that can be used for prayer at the National Oceanography Centre, the Boldrewood Innovation Campus and at Winchester School of Art.

LIBRARIES ON OUR CAMPUSES

Our libraries include Hartley Library on Highfield Campus – open 24 hours a day.

It is a great place to study on your own or with a group. Our other libraries are the Health Services Library at the General Hospital, the National Oceanographic Library at our Waterfront Campus, and the Winchester School of Art Library.

THE ACADEMIC SKILLS SERVICE

The Academic Skills Service offers a variety of resources to help you study smart including guidance on how to prepare for exams and maintain good academic integrity online.

You can also visit the drop-in service at the Academic Skills Hub, based on Level 2 of the Hartley Library.

CITING AND REFERENCING

Citing and referencing your work correctly is essential.

The Library website hosts information about the style for your school and department, and associated guidance for the style. You can also book an online 1:1 appointment if you want support with citing, referencing and academic integrity.

BEFORE YOUR EXAM

Ò Carefully check your personal timetable: take note of your venue, building number, room number and seat number (your timetable is also available via the My Southampton app).

Ò Leave enough time to get to your venue, enter the exam, be seated and set up for the start time.

Ò Your phone, any watch and all prohibited electronic devices should be switched off and left in your bag, do not bring them with you to your seat.

EQUIPMENT/ WHAT YOU CAN BRING

Ò Bring your physical ID card with you.

Ò If using calculators or dictionaries, refer to the University website to ensure you are using an approved model –unapproved models/versions will be taken away.

Ò Make sure water is in a clear or non-labelled reusable bottle.

AT THE END OF YOUR EXAM

Ò Stop writing and close all answer books when told to do so. Remain seated and do not talk.

Ò Double check you have followed all instructions on your exam paper – this includes writing your student ID on every answer book.

Ò Your answer book must be collected by an invigilator before you can leave – otherwise it might not be marked. Never take the exam paper or instructions with you – leave them on your desk.

IF THINGS DO NOT GO TO PLAN

If you are unable to attend an exam, complete or meet an assessment deadline due to any illness or other exceptional circumstances outside of your control, the Special Considerations process is your way to let us know via the Special Considerations request form.

Note the form should be submitted as soon as you can – usually no longer than five working days after any assessment or deadline may have been affected by exceptional circumstances.

The Student Hub can support you with any questions or concerns. You can also obtain free, independent and confidential advice about Special Considerations and extensions from the SUSU Advice Centre.
