Airguide Photonics is a £6m EPSRC-funded programme hosted at the world-renowned Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. Our programme aims to reinvent fibre optics technology, replacing the solid glass core of existing optical fibres with air, offering vastly superior, but unexplored potential. Our research comprises six highly inter-related projects in development, interconnectivity, amplifiers and lasers, data transmission, laser delivery and sensing and metrology. www.airguide.soton.ac.uk/research
WORK WITH US We are seeking students with a background in physics, chemistry, engineering, electronics, mathematics or materials science to work with us on fibre fabrication and its applications, including: →→ Developing radically new forms of optical fibres and fibre amplifiers capable of transmitting more data, faster and further, to build the data centres and internet of the future. →→ Developing fibres and techniques to set new levels of accuracy and look to apply these with partners such as NPL, CERN and NASA. →→ Enabling the transmission of intense optical beams over long distances, changing forever the ways we make, break and build things using lasers. →→ Exploiting the characteristics of state-of-theart Hollow Core Fibres for new diagnosis and treatment methods in healthcare and the life sciences.
