The Standard of
Luxury Bicol has staged a brand new luxury travel interest located in the beautiful land of Mt. Mayon. U-XPLOR visited Misibis Bay to see why it is becoming the hot spot for anonymous and famous.
The path we were travelling featured alternating sights of hollow lanes, road developments, and occasional view of the calm Albay Gulf. This face of Bicol kept us, guests, entertained for an hour-long ride en route to the place called “luxury island playground.� Solar panel-powered street lamps entered into view as we moved deep in Cagraray Island, giving us a sign that we were only moments away to our destination. Few more minutes passed and we arrived at the gates this tropical heaven. A loud music broke the quietness of the morning as the doors of the chauffeur service opened. We were welcomed by folk dancers donned in colorful costumes while the staff offered aromatic wet towels and refreshments. That was our first hand experience to the red carpet treatment by one of best resorts in the country, the Misibis Bay Resort and Casino.
This Small Luxury Hotel accredited prime property really exceeds all expectations. No doubt that their top clienteles only have praises for them like Hollywood star Zac Efron and sports icon Manny Pacquiao. The resort follows a minimalist Asian theme. From the reception, get entranced with well-tended lawn framed by palm trees that extend to the picturesque beach area. To the right is the Spice Market, a quaint restaurant that serves international and Bicolano specialties. The interior is defined by high ceiling like villas found in tropical beaches. Its spacious and homey earth-toned details complement the greens of exterior. Accommodations are to the left but with more than 5 hectares of real estate, it could take us a while before we reach our room. Good thing they have golf carts that escorted us to our relaxing sojourn.

Together with Ira, their front desk officer, we had a short tour of the resort as we snaked through villas, pools, and gardens on the way to our room. We reached the so-called Garden View Rooms after a minute or two, unpacked our stuff and enjoyed a little breather. Spacious and chic in white and orange, the Garden View rooms are located just a couple of minutes from the beach. It was fixed with Crab and Tree toiletries and mini-bar for late afternoon breaks. All in all, Misibis Bay has 53 of these rooms and 37 Luxurious Villas with a hundred more Sea View Rooms under construction. With so many things to do in Misibis Bay, we wasted no time and hurriedly embarked on our first adventure. First order of business is to get loaded for a fun-filled day and what better way to do it than in buffet style. We headed straight to Spice Market to check out the menu and boy we had trouble choosing which one should touch our palate first. The food choices was extensive, they got every wall lined-up with gourmet goodness. From pizza to
pasta, grilled seafood to grilled red meat, Japanese, Singaporean, breads, cheeses, and even chili loaded local cuisines bedecked the tables for one great gastronomic journey. After filling up, we moved to the beach to see what fun escapade was in store for us. We reached the pallid sandy shore by mid afternoon and there was a bit of raucous. There were cranes, crews, and camera as if a movie is in the middle of production. Guess what, it is a TV series in the works. It was a bit unexpected set of crowd but we didn’t mind having some gorgeous faces added on our sightseeing itinerary. Besides, with a beautiful place like this, it is a shame if Misibis Bay doesn’t get its much-deserved airtime. But before we even get entertained with the view, we headed back to front office to cross out some of the things off our list. It is good to note that in Misibis Bay, you’ll be surprised that everything is laid out for you. They will even suggest itinerary for less hassle and more fun stay!

The afternoon was warm but breezy. We took a spin up the Cagraray Eco-Energy Park to try some activities. The ascent was slow and quiet allowing us to savor the seductive pull of raw nature. We stopped by the chapel upon reaching the crest of Eco Park. The symmetry of this chapel resonates the appeal of Bicol’s insignia, the perfectly sloped Mayon Volcano. Its interior plays in white and amber tones. It has an airy, elegant, and solemn ambience that compels one to think about marrying – or remarrying. Now for the adventure in Eco Park, we screamed our lungs out as we sped drop on the 200 and 400-meter zip lines then rallied downslope on the luge. Probably, the chapel was a reminder of faith when we called the Holy’s and the saints on our quick descent. Lastly, we capped off the day’s fun and exploration with postcard-worthy view at the amphitheater to catch our breath and the setting sun. The next day, more adventures were crossed-out at the foot of the hilly Cagraray Island. Misibis Bay is
known for its array of water activities. The beachfront activity center provides windsurfing equipment, kayak, hobie cat sailboats, standup paddleboards, and many more. They also have wake boards and jet skis for more active choices. For nature lovers, we recommend plunging down few meters below the surface to see the animation of underwater. Kuya Brando, the resort’s dive master, announced the presence giant clams in the water. He mentioned that it was transported from Anilao, Batangas and had to endure 40% survival. But with God’s grace, they lived and are now thriving in Misibis Bay’s turf. On our last dusk in the resort, we jumped into a mono hull for a sunset cruise. We relished the remaining hours we had in this beautiful shore before departing for Manila tomorrow. We never expected all sunny in early days of June in Bicol but it did for this weekend. And by that we meant we had a clear view of the Mayon Volcano. From our boat, we witnessed the
hair-raising full glory of its perfectness. We had chips and drinks as each of the guests aboard shared their sweet nothings about Misibis Bay. All the activities, the food, the service, and the sheer beauty of Misibis Bay are worth every centavo. This resort really embodies the luxury in every sense. We can’t wait for another weekend getaway to this world-class beach destination. It is a surfer’s life to ride these liquid ramps. Lying chest-flat on their boards, they wait in open waters for minutes for the perfect swell to carry them away. And like a surfer who bided his time, Philippines patiently waited for a perfect wave and got stoked.
After Baler, various spots in the Philippines are being groomed to become great surfing destinations. Its less crowded islands lying in the middle of Pacific Ocean and South China Sea hold a lot of potentials to host local and international competitions.
A relatively unknown destination in the surfing world few decades ago, even to the locals, this tropical country of more than 7,000 coasts only needed few minutes in the silver screen to shine out.
Just hours away from Manila, another town that can provide ideal waves for newbies and advance surfers alike is at San Juan, La Union. The Billabong San Juan Surf School of Luke Landrigan, the first Filipino team rider of Billabong Asia, offers aspiring surfers and longboarders a professional hand – and feet.

San Juan is only a second-class municipality lying in the outskirts of La Union. But this little town is no less than first-class in providing surfing lessons. San Juan is home to one of the best surfing schools in the country headed by perennial champ Luke Landrigan. With great school and great waves for most of the year, having your crash course at crashing waves will definitely be fun and entertaining.
LOCATION The town of San Juan is part of the first district of La Union, facing South China Sea, and 7 km north of provincial capital San Fernando. It is 277 km north of Manila and can be travelled by land in between 6 to 7 hours. SEASON Surfing season in San Juan starts in October as typhoons peter out while good swell lingers until the summer days of April. Although this surf break is the charm of this province, you can virtually surf its water for most of the year. HIGHLIGHTS San Juan, La Union has a shallow, sandy bottom reef perfect for beginners. With a right hand wave point break and north producing swell that starts from 5-6 ft (1.5m-2m) and holds up to 8-10 ft. Its wave length is normally 50 m and

can reach up to 150 m on a good day. OTHER INTERESTS La Union is often seen as a pit stop on the way to Ilocos. It has at least three waterfalls worth visiting, several churches, beaches, dive sites, and of course, excellent waves for surfing. Slow down and check out the sunset from various vantage point like the Filipino-Chinese Pagoda, the Ma-Cho Temple, or the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, all within San Fernando City. You might also want to try patupat. It’s a sweet sticky rice cake inside a woven coconut pouch, sold for about P50 a clump (that’s about three or four individual packs). But if you want to experience luxury, head a few kilometers down to Thunderbird Resort Poro Point for a day of pampering and relaxation.

PAGUDPUD Ilocos Norte
Regarded as the “Boracay of the North,� Pagudpud boasts a pristine white sand beach at the northwest edge of the province of Ilocos Norte. It possesses big and long waves, with occasional barreling, making it ideal for beginners to pro.
LOCATION Pagudpud rests at the northwest tip of the main Luzon island, in the province of Ilocos Norte. From Laoag Airport, it will take about an hour and 50 minutes flight or prepare a long 12-hour drive by land to get to this beach town, roughly 560 kilometers north of Manila.
SEASON North swell comes between October to April which provides consistently strong wave. But for more daring surfers, check out the typhoon swells that arrive around July to September.
HIGHLIGHTS Surfing in Pagudpud is suitable for any skill level. A normal wave ride by the reef break is around 50-150m and
waves can go as high as 8 ft. It has one of the best and largest waves in the Philippines yet the least crowded.
OTHER INTERESTS Ilocos Region is a place where time ticks slower. Further south, stroll down the alleys of history as you visit the colonial period village of Vigan where centuries old houses and buildings still stand in good shape. Bewitched at the well-kept Marcos Museum and see the preserved body of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. Other prominent figures also have their residenceturned-museum mementos like those of former provincial patriarch, the Crisologos, and former president, the Syquias. More adventure awaits you at La Paz where you can try sand surfing or 4x4 off road drive through desert like sand dunes.

BALER Aurora
Aurora is often mistaken as part of Quezon Province, which is not entirely untrue. It used to be part of Quezon province in the 70’s but now stands alone as Aurora province. Its capital, Baler, was made famous by the 1979 American epic war film featuring its beautiful beach and unparalleled ocean waves.
LOCATION Baler faces the Pacific Ocean and is a contiguous segment of the Philippine Sea. Located 230 kilometers away northeast of Manila, it will take you 5-6 hour drive via the mountain pass. Famous surfing sites in Baler include the following: Sabang Beach, Cemento Cobra Reef, Charlie’s Point and Lindy’s Point.
the film, Charlie’s Point is located north of Sabang Beach. Its location came down to one small movie line, “Charlie, don’t surf!,” hence, Charlie Does surfshop was born. Surf along the tall, strong sharp breakwaves farther up north of Sabang, Lindy’s Point. Or discover a more exhilarating high among experienced surfers at the secret spot found at the mouth of Baler River.

From mid-June to November, typhoon coincides with the wet season. Surfing waves are visible all year round but the best wave months are from October to March that peaks between December and January.
When traveling by daylight to Baler, Aurora, you will pass by the Pantambangan Dam. Just like a winding race circuit through the Sierra Madre Mountains. Baler also nurse largest Balete tree in Asia. This so called “Millenium Tree” is more than 600 years old. Its big trunk surrounded with entwined roots and branches look like a landscape of “Avatar” movie. Explore the greenery of the two small but imposing Aniao Islets and spot kingfishers, gulls and hawks. And lastly, visit the shrine built in commemoration of the survivors of the great 1935 tsunami at Ermita Hill, the highest point overlooking Baler Bay.
HIGHLIGHTS Baler’s spectacular shoreline attracts hundreds of surfers for its 9 feet waves from September to February. Learn the basics of surfing along the stretch of gray sand at Sabang Beach. Its sandy bottoms help novices learn the basics without a scratch. The stretch of Cemento Beach’s white sand and produces waves as high as 14 feet, perfect for surfing experts. Inspired by

Surigao del Norte Siargao faces the Pacific Ocean, 800 kilometers southeast of Manila. Its pristine waters are teeming with aquatic life enhanced by under water caves, mounds and pinnacles. It also has the largest mangrove forest reserves in Mindanao and is surrounded with coral reefs, coconut palms, and a long stretch of white sand bar.
LOCATION Siargao is located remotely off the coast of Surigao del Norte and may be reached between 2 to 4 hours via ferry from Surigao City port. SEASON Although you can get waves all throughout the year, surfing is excellent from August to November as the prevailing wind brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat gives waves extra height. International Surfing Competition is held from September to October. HIGHLIGHTS Siargao is hailed as “surfing capital” of the Philippines. Pros and hobbyists converge to the place called Cloud 9 during its break to witness wave riders pull through the bone-chilling barrels. CNN describes its waves as “dramatic and powerful” with an ocean bed that
can rip your skin and bones, not to mention the sheer mass of the water crashing at you. An average Cloud 9 barrel can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 meters while the tyhoon season could offer 2 to 3 meters of tubes. OTHER INTERESTS Siargao is situated near the Philippine Trench where the seabed drops 500 to 1500 meters then 10,000 meters further offshore, a great place for deep-sea diving exploration. Sport fishing is also gaining popularity in this island-dusted province. Find the most pelagic species of the sea in Siargao and chance upon big game fishes. 20-minute boat ride from the Cloud 9 is the Magpupungko Rock Pool, a natural pool only visible during the low tide season. Or go hopping into the three beautiful deserted islands in Siargao: Guyam, Daku, and the Naked Island.

SIARGAO 3 days and 2 nights DAY 1 The day is full of adventure upon reaching the beautiful island of Siargao. For beginners, start the day with surf lesson while seasoned surfers can advance to the open water. The waves in Siargao during the break can go as high as 2 meters but the sea floor is laced with corals so great caution is advised when hitting the beach. The most accessible diving spot in the country is the Sombrero Island in Anilao, Batangas. This marine protected sanctuary is just three hours away from the busy streets of Manila. Divers’ nearest haven from the city is found at Anilao, Batangas. It is known to be the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines. It has more than 40 dive sites with only minutes apart from each other. The most famous diving site is at the Sombrero Island.
LOCATION Located at the south of Luzon, 140 km away from Manila. This marine protected sanctuary is just 2.5 to 3 hour drive from the capital.
SEASON Diving is possible all year round but prefer to dive from November to June for clearest visibility. Typhoon season, and its volume of rain, peaks from July to September, makes rough jerky waves and visibility bad.
HIGHLIGHTS Diving in Anilao is dominated by coral reefs in the process of recovering. Few decades ago, widespread dynamite fishing nearly wipe out the entire underwater life in the province. Now, it is blooming with colors and animation. Some even consider Anilao as the macro center of the world. It is also popular in shallow reef snorkeling. One of the frequented spots in Anilao
is the Sombrero Island which resembles a submerged hat, hence the name. The “rim” of this island stretches to the north and south. Dive down 50 feet below and swim around with blue ribbon eels, frogfish, putterfish, nudibranches, jacks, red toothed triggerfish, black lion fish, rays, and pawikan turtles to name a few. This island is 2682 feet in depth with slight to moderate current and good visibility underwater between 10-30 meters. Other recommended sites are Bahura Ligpo and Highway for swarming chevron barracudas and occasional eagle rays.
OTHER INTERESTS View Sombrero Island up on the Mt. Gulugod Baboy. Climb this mountain for 2 hours from any visible trek trails. Reach the summit, 525 meters above sea level, overlooking the Batangas Bay, the Janao Bay, and the Verde Islands.

Occidental Mindoro Apo Reef is the largest contiguous coral reef system in the country that covers an area of about 34 square kilometers. It was declared as Protected Natural Park in 1996 as part of Apo Natural Park Project. LOCATION Apo Reef is located 20 kilometers of the west coast of Mindoro Island, Philippines. It is the second largest contiguous coral reef system in the world and the largest in the country. It is found within Sulu Sea with expanse coral reef to the South China Sea. Among the best diving sites frequented by aficionados are Shark Ridge, Merope Rock, Apo 29, Apo Island, and Hunter’s Rock. SEASON Diving is probable all year round; although, there’s a chance of rain and muskier waves between the months of June to October. HIGHLIGHTS There are more than 20 diving sites in the Apo reef. Shark Ridge on its east side slopes down around 10-50 meters where high chance of black and white-tip reef sharks sightings highlights your dive along with manta rays or barracudas. On the other side, Binangaan Drop-off has an impressive wall with gorgonians sea fans. Large fish like tuna and groupers can also be seen here, as well as snappers and parrotfish. Walls on the northern side can drop to 900-meter in depth perfect to spot plenty of shark action. On the west is the Apo Island teeming with huge table corals, stag horns brain corals and variety of soft ones. Further west is Hunter’s Rock, a breeding ground for sea snakes or banded sea kraits. Together with Merope Rock and Apo 29, these underwater sea mounds, are only for experienced divers since currents are strongest and sharks are more curious in this area. OTHER INTERESTS Work those calves and trek and hike Mountain Iglit and Baco National Park. It has eight rivers, rugged terrain, gorges and plateaus totaling 97 thousand hectares. It takes 4 to 5 hours to scale the 1,432-meter mountain.

BALICASAG Bohol
Balicasag Island is part of municipality Panglao in Bohol. It banks highly on its crystalline beaches and extensive collection of underwater creatures that divers around the world enjoy to see. LOCATION Balicasag is found 556.16 nautical miles directly south of Manila and may be reached via plane to Tagbilaran and a short ferry ride to the island. It is part of Panglao group of islands in Central Visayas; southwest of Bohol and east of Cebu. SEASON Diving in Bohol is possible all yearround. Expect light to moderate rain showers between the months of July and September. HIGHLIGHTS Stunning black corals cover the wide patches of this slope and the top of the submarine is enveloped with giant barrel sponges, bright orange elephant ear sponges and gorgonians. A thriving fish community of giant trevally, mackerel and barracudas are abundant; and so are groupers, napoleon wrasses and snappers are hiding by the caves and overhangs. Divers can also enjoy swimming with colorful sea creatures like the eagle and sting rays, turtles and even black-tip sharks. Balicasag Island has a water visibility range from 15-40 meters. OTHER INTERESTS Bohol’s main attraction is the identical mounds of land called Chocolate Hills. Every summer, its area of 50 square kilometers of at least a thousand nearly perfect hills turn into giant chocolatekisses like view as the grass wither into brown shade. You can also spot the smallest primate here called tarsier. It has eyes as big as a quarter and body of only a hundred millimeter. Explorers may go forth to many caves in the province of Bohol such as Hinagdanan Cave where a deep underground lagoon with fresh clean water are found. For those who crave for a slice of history, visit the oldest coral stone-built church and its museum, the Baclayon Church.

TUBBATAHA REEF Bohol
The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park was discovered in the 70s and is considered as one of the most extraordinary diving site in the world. Its name is a combination of two Samal words, tuba and taha, which means “a long reef exposed at low tide.” It promises 10,000 hectares of atoll coral reef dreamland for scuba divers of all skill levels.
LOCATION Tubbataha is located in the middle of Sulu Sea, between Palawan and the Visayas islands, 182 kilometers southwest of the capital of Palawan, Puerto Princesa and about 644 miles southwest of Manila. The reef is divided into the North and South Atoll. The Malayan Wreck, Shark Airport, and Amos Rock are dive sites situated on the north while the Black Rock, Delsan Wreck, and T Wreck are found on the south side.
OTHER INTERESTS Visit the Lighthouse found at the islet of the South Atoll. This high-rise post was originally a wooden skeletal tower built in 1938 by the Americans. Until in 1980, Philippine Coast Guard reconstructed it in concrete. The area also serves as a nesting ground for sea birds and turtles. It is one of the only two man-made structures in Tubbataha Reefs, the other is the Ranger Station.
SEASON Tubbataha’s dive season runs from mid March until mid June. Take advantage of the cloudless skies, calm and clear seas, and enjoy 30-45 meters of visibility underwater on the said peak season. HIGHLIGHTS Lying at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the global center of marine biodiversity is a home for no less than 600 species of fish, 360 species of corals, 13 species of dolphins and whales, 11 species of sharks, and hawksbill turtles. Tubbataha has more than a dozen dive sites. To name a few, wreck sites are found in both atolls: Malayan Wreck on the north side and T Wreck and Delsan Wreck on the South. Amos Rock is found at the south side of the North Atoll. With gentle slopes covered in gorgonian fans and whip corals. Current brings wide variety of large fish like snappers, mackerels and groupers. Moorish Idols, Angelfish and Surgeonfish can also be seen in this 6-70 meter diving site. The Black Rock is an isolated plateau with depths from 15-25 meters. White tip sharks are often seen on its seabed, preying on bluefin trevally and a few titan triggerfish on this dive site.

Before, Bicol was only visited for its mesmerizing and active volcanoes. But little do visitors know that this region has a number of dive and snorkeling sites with Donsol being at the fore of it all because of their charming visitor, the whale sharks or butanding. For hundreds of years, Donsol is a refuge for whale sharks that try to escape colder regions and to reproduce. Locals thought these are harmful and dangerous creatures until divers came in contact with it. In March 1998, Donsol was given the title of “Whale Shark Capital of the World,” and was then featured as the “Best Animal Encounter in Asia” by Time Magazine in 2004.
LOCATION Donsol is a quiet municipality located northwest of Sorsogon, the southernmost province of Luzon Island. It can be reached via plane for an hour to Legazpi and then bus ride to Donsol could burn you two more hours.
SEASON Whale sharks or butanding can be seen all year round although its presence peak during the months of August to April. An annual festival ushers the butanding season every month of April.
HIGHLIGHTS To experience a close encounter with these benign giants requires no special suit because whale sharks are often spotted near the surface. Whale sharks are slow fish that anyone can literally swim along with it. These gentle creatures weigh up to 13.6 tons and can grow up to 12.2 meters long.
OTHER INTERESTS Bicol is known for its ash-belching volcanoes. Being in the Pacific Ring of Fire, no wonder why some of the most active volcanoes in the world are found here just like the Mayon Volcano in Albay and Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon. Aside from hot molten lava underneath its jurisdiction, Bicol is also famous for hot delicacies. One household favorite is the chili peppered Bicol Express, sliced pork meat sautéed in coconut milk generously sprinkled with red chili. But if you prefer a toned down experience, join the firefly watching tour or take pilgrimage at any of the centuries-old churches found all over the province.

MALAPASCUA Cebu
Malapascua is a tiny island located off the coast of Cebu. Although it lacks coverage on the surface with only an area of 2.5 square kilometers, its underwater beauty is what draws tourists attention. Malapascua is known to be home for thresher sharks and varieties of corals. Of all the wondrous diving sites in this island, the best is the sunken island Monad Shoal. LOCATION Monad Shoal lies on a shallow strait off the northern tip of Cebu Island. It is part of barangay Logon, Daanbantayan. For this, expect 3 hour drive from Mactan Airport and another 20 minutes by boat but sceneries will keep you pre-occupied so there is really no idle moment en route.
SEASON It is generally a diving paradise with an all year round ideal condition but many prefer May to November as the best due to thresher shark sightings, devil rays, and manta rays.
HIGHLIGHTS Prime predators such as sharks, hammerheads, and manta rays live here for schools of tuna, barracudas and jacks that
are abundant in this side of the Philippines. Devil rays and eagle rays come seasonal. According to the Asian Diver magazine, Monad Shoal ranked 11th in the “top 101 dive sites in the world.”
OTHER INTERESTS Cebu is a gem of history. It is the proud home of the first Filipino hero LapuLapu whose heroism is celebrated at Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Mactan. Same goes with the resting place of the replica of the Philippine’s first Christian Cross, the Magellan’s Cross. You can also find here one of the oldest churches in the country adjacent to Magellan’s Cross, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. Cebu is also famous for great delicacies such as dried mango, danggit (dried fish), and the infamous Cebu lechon, whole pig roasted in spitfire.

Catching the Wind Brushing wind on a flat-surfaced lagoon brings a wave of opportunities for wind catchers. They ride waves like surfers, go airborne like on a jet suit, and do acrobats like gymnasts on mats. Kite surfing is just one of the extreme sports where you mix up everything your body can craft. This new-age kite flying is not a kiddie hobby, though. You get yourself hung tight to a power kite and let the wind to manageably toss you around in the air, giving you that freedom to maneuver for great stunts. For that ideal location, Philippines’ isolation to the mainland Asian continent works perfectly for kite surfers. Surrounded by Pacific Ocean, Sulu Sea, and South China Sea, the country is one of the most vulnerable places that get the hardest beating from various weather systems of the region. But this seemingly unfortunate condition is welcomed as a blessing than a curse for extreme sports enthusiasts. In the Visayas region, the most frequented spot for such water sport is Boracay. Behind the famous White Beach, literally and figuratively, is a windswept lagoon turned playground for kite and wind surfers alike named Bulabog Beach. Every year, Boracay International Funboard Cup attracts best kite flyers in the world for the much-coveted title in Asia. Other places in the region suited for kiters lie between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. Cuyo Island Palawan
Cuyo Island is the biggest in terms of land area in Cuyo group of islands. During the Spanish colonial era, Cuyo served as a sentry that guards the town from pirates and other hostile forces. Over 350 years since its separation from the foreign rule, Cuyonos culture and heritage are still preserved in mint condition. Even the aged lighthouse by the pier still stand to this date as its first visible landmark of the island.

LOCATION Cuyo Island rests in the middle of Sulu Sea, a fourth class municipality of Palawan. You may reach this island, and other surrounding islets, via air for an hour and 30 minutes or 24 hours boat ride from Manila. To its north is the Kinuluban Group of Islands and to its south is the Cagayancillo and the great Tubbataha Reef. SEASON Best during the dry months from November to April as rainy season bring rough and tougher waves. With rivers much technically difficult, prepare to face an extra challenging and more demanding streams. This is not your ordinary route. Battle the elements in this river-based pursuit as you race downstream on the high mountains of the upper Chico in Sagada and experience a thrill of a lifetime. Ledges, eddies, and pillows are all in the menu for a dose of “wooh” and “aahhh!” In case you are fainthearted but still want to shoot the rapids, waters in the runnel of Pagsanjan, Laguna are relatively friendly compared to other white rivers. Beat that elating trip downstream to the picturesque famous Pagsanjan Falls found juxtaposed the Balanac River and the Bumbungan River. Its legend entails the story of two brothers (Balubad and Magdapio) who enjoyed a rustic life of peace and happiness until calamity struck and made the whole land dry. They challenged the gods and threw a cane among the rocks and water started to roar down the canyon walls, thus created the booming waterfalls. It is really a battle against the beast when you take a speed course in country’s wildest channels. Now prepare for victory! Mountain Province Sagada’s water source is dominated by the Upper Chico River, the “River of Life” for the Kalingas. It is the most heart stopping white water rafting spot in the Philippines, making Sagada internationally known for this water sport. LOCATION Sagada is located in the high altitude of Cordillera, Mountain Province and situated 275 km from Manila. It is bounded by Mt. Data in the south; Mt. Kalawitan in the southeast; Mt. Polis, Mt. Bessang, and Mt. Tirad in the east; and Mt. Sisipitan in the north. SEASON White water season is best and safer for rafters around late June to early January. Different sections have varying water conditions. More difficult and dangerous streams await in June to October.

HIGHLIGHTS The Chico River offers terrifying drops, ledges, rapids and swirling waves. It is noticeably different from other rafting sites as it requires you to raft high in the mountains. Water flowing downstream can be very demanding and technically constricted. There are six rafting sections: class 2-3 rapids at the 9-kilometer Sabangan run offers exceptional paddler-safe cascades for newbie kayakers and rafters; a class 3 boogie water in Dantay run offer standout rapids; Bontoc run has numerous class 4 rapids that include the 12 foot pour rover of the Domay Drop; defined by medium to high river flow is the Confluence run with side trips to the Mainit hot springs; series of exciting drops and breathtaking scenery can also be found in the class 4 technical rapid in the Gawa run; and the Anabel run that offers progression of rapids. OTHER INTERESTS Sagada is also famous for its forest snug trekking trails, refreshing falls, caves, and its traditional way of burying the dead through hanging coffins. You can climb the rice terraces, explore the Sumaguing Cave and the Burial Cave, jump from the ledges to the hiking trail of Bumudok Falls (Big Falls), rock climbing near the Echo Valley, or participate in tribal celebrations.

CAGAYAN DE ORO RIVER Cagayan de Oro
The highly urbanized capital of Misamis Oriental is also the center of outdoor adventures in Mindanao. Running through the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Lanao del Norte, Cagayan de Oro River is the site where people test their mettle to conquer one of harshest downstreams in the country. LOCATION The 90-kilometer stretch of Cagayan de Oro River traverses through municipalities of Talakag, Baungon, and Libona that empties to the Cagayan de Oro City’s estuary at Macajalar Bay. Adventure starts though at Barangay Mambuaya, roughly 40 minutes from the city proper.
SEASON Although the river flows all year round, white water rafting is best during rainy season as the river’s headwaters generously fill the Cagayan de Oro River. The wet season starts around June and lingers until October.
HIGHLIGHTS Cagayan de Oro is a great place to experience wild river paddling. It features many class II to IV rapids that runs from 3 to 6 hours. The entire stretch not only gives you a thrilling ride but also panoramic views of rocky walls, virgin

Land transportation is also possible via roll-on roll-off. It is surrounded by Panabo City to the north, Cotabato to the west, Davao del Sur to the south, and Samal Island to the East. SEASON Enjoy the wild river rafting anytime of the year in Davao River. Beginners may settle for the mild river condition during summer, around January to May. HIGHLIGHTS All rafters go through the basics of swimming, paddling, and even how to save a team member back in the boat. The 3.5-hour ride starts from the Barrio Tamugan until the lowlands, featuring some 30 plus rapids. Enjoy the lush green trees and occasional sightings of rare animals like the Philippine water dragon on this 13-15km trip. Hawks, crows and balinsasayaw, a bird that nests in its mouth, are some of the creatures you can see along the way. The last rapid of the course is as tricky as how they call it, Drop and Suck. It is summer and rain is nowhere to be found. The queue goes like a lottery jackpot hitting its 9-digit mark. There are students, families, and expats who mix in with the local crowds. This is the view of wakeboard parks come peak season. The sport combines skiing, surfing, and snowboarding techniques. It became part of the prestigious X Games in 1996 then was instituted in the World Games in 2005, and of course the Philippines is not one to lag behind. With multiple world-class facilities opening in different parts of the country, it is only a matter of time before this nation of 7,000 plus islands become one great wakeboarding destination. The wakeboarding facility found in Pili, Camarines Sur is arguably the first local park to attract the global spotlight. Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC) held its debut wakeboarding competition in 1996, the Philippine Wakeboard Cable Nationals. Since then, CWC has played a hospitable host to other competitions on both national and international levels like International Wakeboard Competition and World Wakeboarding Competition among many others. This 150-hectare playground lies in the heart of Provincial Capitol Complex. More than its wire-laden wakeboard park, it is the entire developments in the compound that provide the overall appeal to enthusiasts. CWC is a complete one-stop adventure center that provides accommodation, restaurants, and shops for gears and souvenirs. Meanwhile, the most important metropolitan in the south joined the
rally with its own top-caliber offerings. Deca Wake Park in lush green settings of Davao City began showing off the skills of homegrown talents in 2010 and since then became a frequented sports complex for pros and adventurous hobbyists in Mindanao and even the rest of the world. Its sister park, also has some competitions under its belt. Opened only late 2012, Deca Wake Park in Clark Pampanga already went in the forefront of the pack when it catered to IWWF World Cable Wakeboard Championships that attracted athletes from more than 30 countries. Getting here is not a problem because it is only a few hours drive from Metro Manila or enter the city via Clark Airport. But if somewhere closer to the Philippine’s capital is what you are looking for with a good view of sceneries, better head to the slow-paced town of Laguna. After a couple of hours drive south of Manila, beat the challenges at Republ1c Wakeboard Park in Nuvali, Laguna. Last November 2012, this facility was the third stop for the Asian Wake Park Tour. Top talents from other regions like British national Daniel Grant (World Wakepark Championship winner at age 12), Jeff McKee of USA (Guinness World Record holder for 24-hour non-stop ride) and Australian James Windsor (winner of the 2012 Monster Energy WWA Wake Park Triple Crown) made a massive splash in the event. Camarines Sur The CamSur Watersports Complex provides a state-of-the-art wakeboarding facility for locals and tourists. In 2009, the WWA Ultimate Wakeboard Championships was held here, followed by other annual circuit events.
LOCATION CamSur Watersports Complex is located inside the Provincial Capitol Complex in Pili, Camarines Sur. It is 5 minutes away from Naga Airport or about 75 minutes from Legaspi Airport.
SEASON CamSur Watersports Complex is open all year round with months of March to May as the driest, warmest, and most crowded. Competitions are also held around those months so be there if you want to see some world-class actions.
HIGHLIGHTS This world-class 6-hectare watersports park is the first wakeboarding facility in the Philippines that catered to national and international wakeboarding competitions. Regional legs of internationals are often held here, one of which is the World Wakeboarding Association. The park offers facilities for other water sports like wake

Experience a slice of “Survivor” life in the islands of Caramoan where different international franchises of the American-based reality-TV series Survivor were shot. DAY 1: MANILA Mabuhay! Welcome to Manila, the Philippine’s capital. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a drink and light meal. DAY 2 - 6: PALAWAN Board the plane to El Nido to experience the humbleness of island living and reconnect with the nature. Check out the house reef at El Nido Resorts or hop on to different water crafts to make the most of your time in this paradise. Continue your island adventure to the city of Puerto Princesa. The next day, see one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the longest navigable river in the world. DAY 7 - 8: CEBU Transfer to the airport and fly to the Queen City of the South, Cebu!
