W

hat a busy time on campus as we come to the close of the academic and fiscal years. Thank you all for your work to Create a Campus of Distinction! UNC Charlotte is indeed a special place due to the work you do every day to make it so. I am very proud of all we have accomplished together. Looking back, I am perhaps most proud of how we have grown and matured our organization into the high performing team it is today. We have come a long way since I arrived at UNC Charlotte in December 2000. As you heard in the all employees meetings in April, the search for my replacement has started with the goal of bringing three candidates to campus and making a selection before I retire at the end of August. I am hopeful we can have a smooth transition and that I will have a brief overlap with the new AVC. There are other important leadership transitions taking place in the Department as well. Mr. Bart Bruchok is on board as our new Director of Capital Projects. A short bio is included in this issue on page 16. Mr. Tom Sparks, the University’s senior facilities engineer, retires June 1. As the Associate Director for Capital Projects - Engineering, he has been an important leader at UNC Charlotte for the past 17 years and has been instrumental in the development, maintenance, and operation of the campus. We will miss him greatly. We are actively recruiting for Tom’s replacement. Let’s welcome the new leaders and help them get up to speed quickly.

It is wonderful to see the light rail trains running on campus. The Blue Line Extension has been over ten years in the making. It will truly connect UNC Charlotte to the city we call home. It is also exciting to see the new Facilities Operations/Parking Services Complex taking shape. This first-class facility will complete in early September. Our Facilities Operations team will finally have space worthy of the outstanding work they do. The Facilities Planning and Capital Projects teams, in coordination with Academic Affairs and Financial Services, are currently putting together the next Five-year Capital Construction Plan for fiscal years 2021-2025. Developing the list of projects, funding, and schedule for this program is quite challenging. We are striving to complete this and get it approved by the Chancellor and Board of Trustees before I retire. The myriad of projects in this program will reflect the continued growth of our university.

Employee of the Quarter - Shannon Caveny-Cox Carolinas and a recent volunteer for the 2017 SRAPPA Conference hosted in Charlotte, NC. Included in her nomination were excerpts and praise from seven different individuals on campus! Facilities Operations, Housing and Residence Life, the Stadium Complex Manager, and even students have recognized Shannon’s hard work and dedication. Shannon was praised for her willingness to help out, her innovative ideas, and her dedication to the job, often being the first one in and the last one to leave. Shannon is always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it is shoveling snow with Facilities Operations, sorting through recyclables at a football game, or meeting face to face with students and vendors.

ongratulations to Shannon CavenyCox, Recycling Coordinator for Building Environmental Services and Recycling, for being named Facilities Management’s Employee of the Quarter. Shannon was nominated by her supervisor, Brian Guns, Director of Building Environmental Services and Recycling. According to Brian, one of the many reasons she was nominated was “her relationship building approach to promoting excellence in numerous

2

endeavors and her unwavering commitment to campus waste reduction, recycling, and sustainability programs.” Shannon has been a part of the UNC Charlotte family for more than 14 years. Ensuring proper disposal of mattresses (Mattress Go Round), standardizing outdoor recycling bins, and developing a ceiling tile recycling program are just a few of the projects in which Shannon has been involved. She is also a member of the Green Constructive Council of the

When Shannon isn’t on campus she can be found at home reading, spending time with her two daughters, ages 15 and 12, or gardening. She also has one dog and four cats, three of which were found on campus when they were kittens. “[Shannon’s] relentless drive to improve herself and her team is the best indicator of her first class service to Facilities Management.” says Guns. It is this same drive that has been recognized by multiple departments all over campus. Shannon’s drive and can-do attitude are just a few of the attributes that make her truly deserving of this honor! Congratulations and keep up the spectacular work! Team of the Quarter - High Voltage

C

ongratulations to the High Voltage team: Tom MacNab, Chris Desmet, Travis Frady, Ray Butler, Terry McCormick and Danny Dang for being named Team of the Quarter. On January 25, 2018 at approximately 11:02 a.m., electrical power was lost to nine University buildings: College of Education, Woodward, Barnhardt, Student Activity Center, RUP 1, West Deck, Cell Tower, Belk Gym, and Memorial Hall. The High Voltage team safely deployed and commenced to identify where the problem was and how to eliminate it. Troubleshooting soon revealed a tripped main circuit “F” interrupter at the Duke substation receiving equipment. Further troubleshooting revealed a fault somewhere between Woodward Hall and the West Parking Deck. A second round of troubleshooting revealed a point of cable failure in manhole H at the SAC/ RUP-1 service area. The detonation of this cable lifted a manhole cover and caused a momentary underground fire. A third troubleshooting effort identified and isolated which one of multiple cables in manhole H had faulted, allowing the team to consider how to re-power the SAC and RUP 1. The assessment revealed a “strong potential that we could“ re-power the dark buildings from another main circuit “B,” looping around from the South. This final troubleshooting determined that successful connection of the power for the dark buildings could be fed from this other main circuit.

At approximately 12:59 p.m., the original damaged circuit and the new expanded circuit were re-energized. This involved multiple operations and jobsite briefings. No one was ever alone, and each procedure was executed with careful planning and assured clearance at delivery.

The final determination that caused the fault was a premature cable insulation failure. The High Voltage team has already developed a plan to re-build this faulted circuit originally installed in 1994. Eighth Annual Safety Fair

O ur 2018 Safety Fair was a success with more than 250 Facilities Management staff in attendance. Sponsored by Grainger, this event included more than 20 vendors, free food, a driving simulator, and door prizes. The event was held on May 2 at Hauser Alumni Pavilion. “With such beautiful weather, the Safety Fair had a great turn out,” stated Clyde Derberry, learning and development coordinator. “Seeing everyone networking together is what this event is all about. Capital Projects Update

Congratulations to Jeanine

C

onstruction continues on the Facilities Operations and Parking Services building, which is scheduled for completion in September 2018. Revitalization of Belk Plaza continues. Once completed, the plaza, located in the historical center of campus in the academic core formed by Kennedy, Macy, Winningham, Rowe, and Colvard, will provide a more functional outside environment for rest, study, reflection, and conversation. Construction has begun on the Admissions and Visitors Center at the front of campus along Alumni Way, across the street from Housing and Residence Life. The 18,000 square feet building will house undergraduate admissions offices and will serve as a starting point for campus orientation and tours for prospective students and their families.

She was awarded the The Construction Professionals Network Institute, Inc (CPNI) Chair Service Award for serving as the 2017-18 CPN Institute Chair. Jeanine organized NC rural town assessment workshops across NC, participated in workshops held in Pembroke, Burnsville and Maysville, NC to address their town needs and revitalization plans, and led the 2017-18 CPNI board.

It is with a heavy heart that the Capital Projects team bids farewell to Tom Sparks, the University’s senior facilities engineer. After nearly 18 years with UNC Charlotte, Tom will be retiring on June 1, 2018. He plans to spend his time playing with his grandchildren, participating in church activities, and travelling in the Continental U.S. with his wife, Donna. And, of course, he will also be attending to those “honey-do” lists she has for him! We hosted a retirement reception for Tom on May 15 in CHHS 145. Thanks to all who came by to wish him well. Design Services News Project Name: Kanturk Sculpture Relocation Professional Title: Shawn Kelly Landscape Planner and Project Coordinator Project Description: The College of Arts + Architecture requested the Kanturk Sculpture be relocated from its current home in the quad between Storrs and Rowe buildings to a new location north of Mary Alexander Boulevard in the lawn area overlooking Hechenbleikner Lake. The project involved site preparation from the Grounds unit, careful aerial crane lifting, and supervised transport of the Mint Museum loaned sculpture from the old location to the new home above the lake. The relocation was completed over the recent Spring Break. You can now view the Kanturk Sculpture from the shorelines of Hechenbleikner Lake or as you enter on to campus from the UNC Charlotte main entrance off Highway 49.

Project Name: Peace Haven Cone University Center Meditation Room Professional Title: Caroline Hill Architectural Interior Designer and Project Manager Project Description: Early in 2016, a student-led organization held petitions for a meditation room to be added on campus. Chancellor Dubois approved the students’ requests and Cone University Center received the addition of a meditation room called “Peace Haven”. Caroline Hill, pictured in the center, was the architectural designer and project manager responsible for bringing this space into existence. The space opened in the fall of 2017. Philip Jones receives the P

hilip M. Jones, Jr., associate vice chancellor for the Facilities Management department, received the prestigious Frank B. Turner Award at the 37th Annual State Construction Conference on March 29. The leadership team of the Facilities Management Department nominated Jones for the award in February, after he announced his upcoming retirement. The Frank B. Turner Award is presented by the AIA North Carolina, the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Consulting Engineers Council of North Carolina and the Professional Engineers Council of North Carolina. The award recognizes a state employee who has made an outstanding professional contribution to the built environment, as exemplified by the late Frank B. Turner. In the nomination, the leadership team eloquently nominated Jones, calling his “stalwart commitment to UNC Charlotte paramount,” and naming his contributions as a “legacy that will outlive us all.” Pictured seated left to right are

It has been a labor of love for many of us.” John Storch, director of operations for Housing and Residence Life, applauded Jones in his recommendation letter for creating a “beautiful campus tapestry that has enabled us to recruit bright generations of students.” Jones has served as the associate vice chancellor for almost 18 years, proceeding a 29-year career as an Army Engineer

Officer. It goes without saying that Jones has a heart to serve others. Jones has led his 460+ employees to receive various awards, including the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) Award for Excellence in 2014. He has increased minority participation, created mission and vision statements for the department, and, under the direction of Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, led a multi-divisional team in developing the University’s first “Ten-year Capital Construction Plan.” He has also

overseen more than $1 billion in capital projects and nearly $157 million in informal projects. “Without question, [campus] growth would not have been possible without the visionary support and leadership provided by Phil Jones and his remarkable team,” stated Chancellor Dubois in his recommendation letter for the nomination.

2013 • Phase I of South Village was the most complex set of construction projects in the history of UNC Charlotte. This included renovating one of four residence halls, building two new residence halls, a new dining facility, a regional utility plant, a parking deck, roads and utilities. art Bruchok came on board May 14, 2018 as our new Director of Capital Projects. Bart comes to us with a wealth of experience in facilities management, construction management, and leadership. During his career, he served in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps as Chief Engineer at two Facilities and Physical Plants and as the Assistant Director for Construction at the University of Central Florida. Most recently, he served as Project Executive for a very complex series of mega-projects for the Department of Veteran Affairs in Orlando Florida. Bart holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland. ark Campbell came on board March 19, 2018 as our Facilities Information Systems’ Access Controls Support Technician. He is supporting the Open Options (card access) application and assisting with access control support requests, key boxes, cameras, and resolving card access Helpdesk tickets. Mark brings 19 years of customer service experience gained from previously working at TEKsystems and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Mark obtained his bachelor’s degree in Digital Technology and Culture from Washington State University. He is originally from Fairbanks, Alaska and has lived in Charlotte for five months. annah Palko came on board March 16, 2018 as our Facilities Information Systems’ Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Survey Technician. Her duties include assisting with surveying projects, especially external surveying, overseeing utility map updates, and supporting additional ARCHIBUS AutoCAD applications related to space information updates. Hannah has two years of GIS and surveying experience gained from previously working at UNC Coastal Studies Institute and Central Cabarrus High School. Hannah received her Master of Science in Ecology from UNC Chapel Hill. She will begin working on her PhD in Geography this fall. Hannah has lived in the Charlotte area for 20 years. Meet the Facilities Operations Administrative Team!!

acilities Operations (FO) is comprised of highly skilled individuals who help maintain the beauty and functionality of UNC Charlotte’s campus. Among this group, located through the winding hallways of the Facilities Operations building, you will find the FO Administrative Support Group working hard behind the scenes! The Administrative Support Group is comprised of Jessica Deal, Melissa McLaughlin, Vivian Cherry, Donna Sofsky, Adriane Malachi, and Erika Miller. Jessica has 16 years of experience in Facilities Management and is always willing to help out and share her expertise. Melissa has 15 years

of experience with Facilities Management and is our grounds unit expert! Then, there is Vivian, our purchasing card expert. She excels in helping supervisors get the materials they need when they need it. Donna was our weekly visiting admin from Center City. Effective May 21, she was promoted to supervisor of the group. She is very helpful and financially savvy. Adriane began in January. She is always willing and excited to take on a new challenge. The newest team member, Erika, recently received her masters degree from Wingate University. She is proving every day to be a great addition to the group.

These ladies are responsible for ordering and receiving all of the parts the technicians and supervisors need. They also act as the front line, answering and directing phone calls recevied via the customer service line informing the correct personnel of any issue occurring on campus. The line is open from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at 704-687-0562. These ladies are a crucial part of the Facilities Operations team, and we are grateful for their hard work and dedication. Results from RecycleMania competition show improvement

O

ver the last three months, the campus community dedicated efforts toward the RecycleMania competition, from February 4 through March 31, and Earth Month in April. UNC Charlotte’s showing indicated improvement in sustainable practices across campus compared to previous years. During these months, the University hosted many events to help bring awareness and give the campus community an opportunity to volunteer. These events included collection drives, trash bin audits, tree planting activities, campus cleanup locations, public outreach opportunities in local schools, assembly of various kits and food donations. Highlights from the campus community’s participation included: • The University placed in the top 15 percent in a RecycleMania category that evaluated the amount of waste produced per person. This means the campus community is increasingly mindful of consumption habits, eliminating the creation of trash and recyclables in the first place. • The University ranked 10th in a RecycleMania category measuring the number of aluminum cans and bottles recycled. • Halton Arena went from zero percent of waste diversion to more than 50 percent, kick starting the initiative of adding another zero waste facility on campus, alongside Jerry Richardson Stadium. • More than 450 pounds of electronic waste (e-waste) was collected. Donated computers and cell phones are being refurbished and given to economically disadvantaged families • Over 50 pine and red maple trees were planted near Davis Pond. • The campus cleanup participants collected nearly 500 pounds of waste from campus grounds. • According to a public trash sort audit of bins around the Prospector Building and CHHS Plaza, 88 percent of waste was properly disposed of by the campus community. Campus leaders who coordinated these events were University community relations, sustainability office and recycling. They were pleased with the participation of the campus community in the various volunteer opportunities hosted. This year’s results will serve as a benchmark for future participation. National Volunteer Week | FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

FM employees participate in National Volunteer Week

S

everal Facilities Management employees participated in a sensory kit build in honor of National Volunteer Week. During the build, volunteers assembled different toys, hair ties, clay, and other textured items into kits that were donated to Autism Charlotte. Individuals with autism use sensory kits to both calm and stimulate their sensory system, which helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and can help them focus. This was one of many events the Office of Community Relations hosted to encourage employee participation in National Volunteer Week. The FM Department adopted the sensory kit build this year to ensure employees from all shifts had the opportunity to participate. FM staff came out for a day of fun, food, games, music, and fellowship. The festivities began with kickball followed by a cookout. We had a new basketball game and line dancing was a hit! Congratulations to horseshoe winners, Mike Watt and Dean Burris. This event was also a pre-retirement celebration to wish Mr. Philip M. Jones, our associate vice chancellor, well. 2018 - Light Rail Grand Opening One of the most transformational projects in University history became a reality on March 16 when the LYNX Blue Line Extension officially opened. A project in the making for more than 10 years, the 9.3 mile stretch, with 11 new stations, provides light rail service from UNC Charlotte to Uptown Charlotte. 22
