A MeageFrom e Chanceor Endowed scholarships make higher education possible for many of our students. The financial assistance these scholarships provide often proves to be lifealtering for scholarship recipients. A college education can be not only expensive, but a daunting experience to a student, often living away from home for the first time, sometimes the first member of his or her family with a chance to pursue a degree. Learn more about some of these students in this booklet; their powerful words tell the story of how much difference a helping hand can make. On behalf of these students and all of our scholarship recipients, I deeply thank our donors, especially those who have established a new scholarship endowment or contributed to an existing one. I invite all friends and alumni of UMass Lowell—and our predecessor schools, the University of Lowell, Lowell Tech, Lowell State College, Lowell Textile and Lowell Teachers College—to support the endowed scholarship program and help transform the lives of future generation of students. Endowed ScholarshipFunds Without the financial assistance provided by UMass Lowell’s endowed scholarship funds, many students would be faced with difficult choices. Working two—or more—jobs to pay for tuition and books, graduating with burdensome loans or dropping out for a while, or forever, can loom as possibilities. The scholarship endowments recognized in this booklet provide the financial assistance that, most important, enables students to stay in school. It also, however, allows them to devote more time to study and to participate in student clubs, athletics and other activities that encourage personal and social development. Over the past few decades, more than 200 generous alumni, faculty and staff members and friends have established scholarship endowment funds to ensure that future generations can access the outstanding education provided by UMass Lowell. The funds also allow donors to create personal legacies that have meaningful and long-lasting impact.

Endowing a Scholarship Fund To establish an endowed scholarship fund, a donor must commit a minimum of $25,000 through an outright gift or a multi-year pledge. Donors may choose to establish a named memorial or family scholarship and indicate preferences in the way awards are made to students. Donors are kept informed about the progress of their funds through written annual reports and communications from their scholarship recipients. An annual luncheon provides an opportunity for donors to meet their scholarship recipients in person and hear firsthand how their generosity has made an important impact. As a senior cadet, I help train the next generation of cadets and ensure that they have everything they need to succeed.”
