New Public Health Program Launched

Responding to the growing demand for public health professionals, the College of Health Sciences introduced new bachelor's and master's public health degree programs. Prospective students may apply now to enroll this fall. The new public health programs were developed in response to the growing shortage of workers in the region and nationwide. Trends fueling the need include a greater public interest in health promotion and disease prevention, an aging population, and an increase in the number of people retiring from jobs in the public health field. Anatomy Lab in Weed Hall Renovated

At Weed Hall on South Campus, two second-floor classrooms have been combined into a new 1,445square-foot instructional lab for anatomy and physiology classes. The lab is outfitted with new benches, sinks, tables, storage cabinets and an audio-visual system and will help accommodate the growing health sciences enrollment. These are among the changes students and faculty will notice on campus this semester. The projects are expanding opportunities for hands-on, active learning and continue the transformation of the University's landscape. Read more.

Student Switches Careers, Realizes Passion for Nursing

When Ryan Santosuosso's grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, she found herself drawn to him even more as the disease progressed. While visiting him in a nursing home, she felt a strong connection with him and the other residents. It was then that she decided to change her career from teaching children to caring for the elderly. "There are many people who go into teaching with a passion and the love for children, but there are not nearly as many who have the same type of passion for the elderly," says Santosuosso. "I realized that the connection I have with older people is unique and if I didn't at least try to become a nurse, I would be wasting a valuable talent." Read more.
